Indiana Marriages, 1780-1992

Sister Mary Francis Houin, PHJC
Sister Mary Francis Houin, PHJC, 82, died at 1:45 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001, in the Catherine Kasper Home, at the Community of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ, Donaldson, Ind. The daughter of Francis and Frances Smith Houin, Sister Mary Francis was born in Plymouth, Ind., on Nov. 23, 1918. She entered the convent on June 26, 1937, and professed her first vows on June 25, 1939. After earning a B.S. in Education, Sister Mary Francis traveled the world evangelizing. As a Poor Handmaid of Jesus Christ, Sister was likened to St. Paul: she served in many mission fields, including Africa. Sister was a parochial school elementary teacher for over 40 years and then was the administrator of Beacon House (House of Prayer) in Burlington, Iowa, until her retirement in May of 1998. Surviving her death are three sisters and three brothers. Her sisters are Irene Wenzel, N. Liberty, Ind., Catherine Haeck, Plymouth, Ind., and Theresa Anderson and her husband, Lloyd, Plymouth. Her brothers are: Bernard Houin and his wife, Betty, Argos: Lawrence Houin and his wife, Frances, and Leo Houin and his wife, Marilyn, all of Plymouth. A sister-in-law Pauline Houin of Plymouth also survives, along with numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Sister was preceded in death by two brothers Elmer and Carl. Friends may call at the Catherine Kasper Home to celebrate the life of Sister Mary Francis on Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001, from 4:30 to 9 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, at the Catherine Kasper Home. Father Edward Konerman, S.J. and Father Anthony Gillespie will officiate. Interment will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Donaldson, Indiana. ‘Come Home Good and Faithful Servant.’

Floyd L. Irwin
Floyd L. Irwin, 95, died on Sept. 9, 2001, at the Manor Care Nursing Home in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he had lived since 1997, moving there from North Liberty, Ind. He was born on June 6, 1906, in North Township, Marshall County, to Riley E. and Rosa Ellen Berger Irwin. He attended schools in Teegarden and graduated from Walkerton High School in 1924. On Nov. 14, 1936, Floyd and Edith J. Shawhan of Pike County, Indiana, were married. They lived in Logansport and Plymouth prior to moving to Albuquerque. Edith died in 1981. Floyd worked for the Indiana Motor Bus Company as a driver and maintenance supervisor until 1962. After moving to New Mexico, he worked for the Sandia Corp. as an electronics technician until his retirement to his farm near Petersburg, Ind., in 1970. From 1972 to 1997, he was caretaker of his sister’s farm near North Liberty. Floyd was a 32nd degree Mason and a Shriner. He is survived by a son and a daughter. They are: James Irwin and his wife, Roberta, of Santa Fe, New Mexico and Karla Cates and her husband, William of Albuquerque. A grandson, Vernon and Sunny Reaser, Phoenix, Ariz., and a granddaughter, Mindy and Arthur Ortega of Albuquerque also survive. One great-grandson, four great-granddaughters and a sister, Irene Stetler of Plymouth, survive as well. Floyd was preceded in death by his parents, his spouse and by three brothers: Ralph, Jacob and Alfred. Three sisters, Hazel Williams, Beulah Starner and Clara Irwin have also died. Visitation will be held on Friday evening, Sept. 21, 2001 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth. Funeral services for Floyd will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001, in the funeral home. The Rev. Charles Kreig, pastor of the Pretty Lake United Methodist Church will officiate. Interment will follow at the Westlawn Cemetery in North Liberty, Ind. Memorial gifts in Floyd’s memory may be made to Open Hands, P.O. Box 4625, Santa Fe, New Mexico, 87502 or Joy Junction, P.O. Box 27693, Albuquerque, New Mexico, 87125.

Betty Kahn
Seventy-one year old Betty Kahn, 7719 Redwood Road, Plymouth, died of natural causes at 4:08 p.m. on Tuesday, June 12, 2001, in St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center, South Bend. A former Michigan City resident, Betty had lived in Sebring, Fla., for the past several winters. Born in Plymouth, Indiana, on March 27, 1930, she was the daughter of Henry and Jennie Harbaugh Bixel. She graduated from Lincoln High School with the class of 1948. On March 5, 1949, in Plymouth, she was married to Albert “Abe” Kahn. Betty was an assembler for the Milton-Roy Corporation in Michigan City, retiring in 1992. She liked to crochet and enjoyed playing cards and going to yard sales and flea markets. For 21 summers she enjoyed being in Jellystone Park. Mostly though she loved her children and grandchildren and spending time with them. She and Abe were members of the Moose Lodge # 980 in Michigan City. Betty is survived by Abe, her husband of 52 years, a daughter and two sons. Her daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Jim Meece, live in Plymouth. Her son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Cindy Kahn, are in Michigan City and Jeffrey Kahn lives in South Bend. Six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and Guy, her brother, and, his wife, Diane, Bixel, Covington, Georgia, survive as well. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Willadean Towne and a brother, Richard Bixel. Visitation with the family will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 15, 2001, and Saturday, June 16, one hour prior to the service, in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The Rev. Jimmy Baker, pastor of the Blissville Church of the Brethren where Betty attended, will officiate. Burial will be in New Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth. Memorial gifts in Betty’s name may be made to the American Heart Association.

Lulu I. Kamp
June 7, 1928 - June 11, 2001 A Plymouth resident most of her life, Lulu I. Kamp, 73, 222 Parkview St., Plymouth, Indiana, died of natural causes at 9:45 a.m. on Monday, June 11, 2001, in the Pilgrim Manor Nursing Home. Lulu, a graduate of Lincoln High School, was born in Plymouth on June 7, 1928. She was the daughter of Oral and Daisy Fear Haynes. Retired from American Optical, now A.O. Safety, she had also worked as a waitress for Casey Jones. An avid reader and a consummate Pepsi drinker, she enjoyed being with and often baby-sat for her nieces and nephews. Lulu is survived by her son, Danny Kurtz and grandson, David Kurtz, both of Tampa, Fla. A brother, Raymond Haynes of Leesburg, Fla., a sister, Edith Maxon, Plymouth, and several nieces and nephews survive as well. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Roy and Kenneth Haynes and two sisters, Martha Stiles and Dorothy Richardson. There will be no visitation. Graveside funeral services will be held in New Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth, at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 13, 2001. The Rev. Charles Krieg, pastor of the Pretty Lake Methodist Church, will officiate. Memorial gifts in Lulu’s memory may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Harry L. Kamp
Lifetime Plymouth area resident Harry L. Kamp who lived in the Pilgrim Manor Nursing Center, 222 Parkview St., Plymouth, died of natural causes on July 25, 2001, at 5:05 a.m. Harry was 87 years old. Born on Sept. 14, 1913, in Plymouth, Harry was the son of Hiram and Nellie Powers Kamp. He attended Plymouth schools. A self-employed truck driver for over 40 years, Harry loved race cars. He liked to race himself (his car number was 66) and to watch other people race. Harry is survived by two sons and three daughters. His sons, both of Plymouth, are Kenneth and Sondre Kamp and Dale and Sharon Kamp. His daughters are: Carolyn and Dale Manuwal, Plymouth and Margaret and John Cartright and Lynda Clemons, all of Naples, Fla. Thirteen grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren also survive together with Hiram Kamp, a brother, of South Bend, Ind. Harry was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, George Pressler and two grandchildren. There will be no visitation. Graveside funeral services will be on Friday, July 27, 2001 at 10 a.m. in the Maple Grove Cemetery, Argos, Ind. The Rev. Charles Krieg, pastor of the Pretty Lake Trinity United Methodist Church will officiate.

Carlos E. “Skeeter” Kelly, Jr.
Carlos E. “Skeeter” Kelly, Jr., 67, 2048 W. County Line Road, Walkerton, a lifetime Marshall County area resident, was taken ill at home on Wednesday and died of an apparent heart attack at 5:54 p.m. on Thursday, October 11, 2001, in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth. Skeeter was born in South Bend, on March 4, 1934, the son of Carlos P. and Gertrude Van Lue Kelly. He graduated from North Liberty High School with the class of 1952 and served with the United States Army in Korea. On July 1, 1968, in Walkerton, he and his wife, Dorothy L. Madison, were married. Skeeter was a highly regarded employee of Modine Manufacturing in LaPorte. He retired as a supervisor in 1995, after 31 years of service. He admired vintage cars and guns and enjoyed watching TV. He loved people: especially children and took the time to get to know them. Outspoken, he was a man of great good humor and was known for his camaraderie. He was a member of V.F.W. Post 1954, North Liberty and American Legion #189, Walkerton, where he served as a Vice-Commander. In Plymouth, he was a Second Counselor of the Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints. Skeeter is survived by his spouse, Dorothy, and by several children and step-children. Skeeter is also survived by his mother, Gertrude Singleton, New Carlisle, Ind. His two daughters are Vicky and Richard Stepien, Niles, Mich., and Judy and Greg Nifong, Elkhart. A son, Terry and Cindy Moon of Houston, Texas, also survives. Step-daughter Dina L. and Tim, Brooks, Bourbon, and two step-sons, Kent V. Upchurch, and John J. and Jennifer Upchurch, all of Indianapolis, survive as well. Four grandchildren and seven step-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews also survive together with three sisters and a brother. They are: Lou Ann and Art LaBere, Bridgeview, Ill., Patty and Hal Baker, South Bend, Ind., and Debbie Singleton, Terre Haute, Ind. A brother, Gene and Carol Kelly, of Myrtle Beach, N. Carolina, also survives Skeeter’s death. Visitation with the family will be on Sunday, October 14, 2001, from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, October 15, 2001, in the funeral home. President Don Brincefield of the Plymouth Church of Latter Day Saints will officiate. The VFW Post 1954 and the American Legion Post 189 will provide military graveside honors at Porter Rae Cemetery, North Liberty, where Skeeter will be buried.

Mary Jane Knepper
Mary Jane Knepper, 61, 307 N. Indiana St., Bremen, died at 9:25 a.m. on Saturday, July 14, 2001. Mary Jane died in the Bremen Community Hospital of a cancer-related illness following a brave five-year battle with the disease. For the past 15 years Mary Jane had shared a home with her mother in Bremen, coming from Plymouth. Born on May 6, 1940, in Plymouth, she was the daughter of Howard A. and Margaret E. Metheny Knepper. She graduated from Plymouth High School in the class of 1958. Mary Jane worked in production at Bremen Wire for 12 years. She loved children and did a lot of baby sitting for her family and for children in the area. She liked to read and do needlepoint and counted-cross stitch work. She crocheted and gardened and was an avid sports fan, especially Cubs baseball. She was fond of animals, particularly dogs. Mary Jane was an active member of the Bremen Church of the Brethren and had taught a seniors Sunday School class. She is survived by her mother, Margaret Knepper, Bremen, and two brothers: Richard A. and Shurla Knepper, Inwood, and Ronald E. and Susan Knepper, Plymouth. Three sisters also survive. They are: Sally A. O’Dell, Orriville, Ohio; Linda K. and Edward Krecik, Knox, and Judy M. Dildine, Round Rock, Texas. Several nieces and nephews survive as well. Mary Jane was preceded in death by her father and James E. Knepper, a brother. Family services for Mary Jane were held on Sunday evening, in the Bremen Church of the Brethren, Pastor Tom Hostetler officiated. There will be no visitation. Memorial gifts in Mary Jane’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Marshall County Hospice.
