Arthur M. Shell
June 17, 1932 - January 3, 2005
Arthur M. Shell, 73, 999 East SR 14, Winamac died Jan. 3 at his residence. He was born June 17, 1932 in Gretna, Neb. and was the son of Arthur E. and Stella (Kingery) Shell.
On March 16, 2000, he married Antoinette J. Jancovich in Winamac, she survives.
Art was a retired welder and mechanic. He was formerly employed at Allis Chalmers in LaPorte. He was formerly a custodian and bus driver at the California Township School in Knox. He also operated a mechanical fabrication business from his home and was a farmer. He loved to tinker in his shop and fish.
Survivors along with his wife Antoinette include: Three daughters Marcella [Ralph] Spoor of North Judson, Marian Sue [Joe] Nies of Winamac, and Marlene [Tom] Kraus of North Judson. Four sons, Marvin [Kim] Shell of Winamac, Martin [Darlene] Shell of Valparaiso, Marlin [Jeanie] Shell of Danville, Ky., and Mark [Traci] Shell of North Judson, two stepdaughters, Andrea [Kerry] Leonard, of Ft, Wayne, and Laura Bunkowfst of North Judson and a step son William [Annie] Bunkowfst, also of North Judson. Also surviving are 22 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren, two sisters, Lois Carnes, Cedar Lake, and Katherine Dilley, Black Oak, two brothers Charles Shell of Spooner, Wisc. and Rick Shell of Nashville, Tenn. Arthur was preceded in death by a great grandchild, Brianna Nies.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Jan. 7, at Frain Mortuary in Winamac with Arlin Perry officiating. Burial took place in the Mt. Zion-Franklin Twp. Cemetery in Winamac.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family.

Frances A. Hines
July 2, 1927 - January 8, 2006
Frances A. Hines, 78, 2977 W. 314 N., Winamac, died Jan. 8 at Pulaski Health Care Center in Winamac. She was born July 2, 1927 in Zion, Ill. to Franklin and Elsie Margaret (Kirkham) Hurlburt.
On Oct. 17, 1943 in Ripley, she married Adams Hines. He died Nov. 25, 1979.
Frances lived in the Winamac vicinity all her life and formerly attended Ripley Gospel Chapel. She enjoyed working crossword puzzles and walking.
Surviving are: three daughters Cindy [Glenn] Cole and Alberta [Ray] Katchke both of Winamac and Rosemary [William] Marsh of Knox, three sons Frank [Mindy Herren] Hines of Winamac, Adam [Bonnie] Hines of Monticello, Minn., and Robert [Mickey] of Kewanna, also surviving are 29 grandchildren, 66 great grandchildren and 12 great-great grandchildren a sister Louise Shively of Idaville, and a brother Lester Hurlburt of Winamac. She was preceded in death by a daughter Geneva Shidler, two grandsons, two great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter.
Funeral services will be held at the Frain Mortuary on Wednesday, (today) Jan. 11 at 1 p.m. with Arlin Perry officiating. Burial will take place in the Winamac Cemetery.
Visitation will be: 4-9 p.m. on Tuesday and after 8 a.m. on Wednesday.

Kraven Dean Prater
December 16, 2005 - January 5, 2006
Kraven Dean Prater, three weeks old, of North Judson, died Jan. 5 at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. He was born Dec. 16 in Knox to Timothy Dean Prater and Samantha Eliza (Zellers) Froeschke.
Graveside services were held on Monday, Jan. 9, with Pastor Charles Murphy officiating. Burial took place in the San Pierre Cemetery.
Frain Mortuary in Winamac was in charge of arrangements.

Judith M. Nehls
May 28, 1938 - January 16, 2006
Judith M. Nehls, 67, of Warsaw, died Jan. 16, at 5:15 a.m. at her residence. She was born May 28, 1938 in Chicago to Walter and Marie (Lewandowski) Hyzy.
On Aug. 29, 1959 she married Robert Nehls, who survives.
Judith was a homemaker and has resided in Kosciusko County for the last 14 years. She volunteered at Atwood and Leesburg Schools. She also volunteered at St. Anne School in Monterey.
Survivors along with her husband Robert are two daughters, Susan [John] Adamiec of Warsaw and Lynn [Donald] Darda of Winamac; a son, Walter [Debra] Nehls of Osceola. Also surviving are five grandchildren Scott, JoAnna, Ben, Noah & Joe. Also surviving are two sisters, three brothers, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers.
Visitation will be held Thursday, Jan. 19 at Titus Funeral Home in Warsaw from 2-6 p.m. There will be no funeral services.
Memorial contributions may be made to Kosciusko Home Care Hospice, P.O. Box 1196, Warsaw, IN 46581-1196.

Helen Pauline Berkshire
September 12, 1922 - January 10, 2006
Helen Pauline Berkshire, 83 of Royal Center, died at 6 am. Tuesday, Jan. 10 at her residence.
She was born Sept. 12, 1922 in White County, to Ora J. and Brida (Runkle) Houser. She was married Aug. 24, 1940, in Delphi, to Clyde Berkshire, who survives.
Helen was a founding member of Northern Indiana Power from the Past and also a founding member of the International Harvester Collectors.
She attended Burnettsville High School. She was co-owner and bookkeeper for Berkshire Implement since 1952.
Surviving with her husband of 65 years are one son, Marvin [Wilma] Berkshire of Royal Center; two daughters, Karen [Jon] Brubaker of Fort Wayne, and Permella [Doug] Campbell of Westfield; one sister, Freda Smith of Logansport; nine grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Vance Berkshire and Gary Lee Berkshire; two brothers and two sisters.
Services were held at Fisher Funeral Chapel in Logansport, Friday, Jan. 13 with celebrant Carla Barker officiating. Interment followed in the Davis Cemetery.
Contributions may be made to the Northern Indiana Power from the Past Scholarship fund.

Richard B. Kuhn
January 9, 2006
Richard B. Kuhn, age 84, Granada Street, New Smyrna Beach, Fla. died on Monday, Jan. 9, at Ocean View Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, New Smyrna Beach, Fla.
Born in Star City, Mr. Kuhn came to Florida in December 1962 from Burr Oak. He was a self-employed floor installer.
Mr. Kuhn was a member of American Legion Post 17, Knights of Columbus, member and Elk of the year of Elk's Lodge 1557, and Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, all in New Smyrna Beach. He was in charge of bingo for years at the Elk's and the church.
He was a U.S. Army WWII veteran, converted PT boats from a 2-man to a 1-man operation and had several telephone conversations with Franklin D. Roosevelt. He worked with a German POW also named Kuhn and became friends.
Mr. Kuhn once had tea with Ginger Rogers, loved to bowl and was inducted in the Bowling Hall of Fame in April 1993. He was a pilot and owned a Piper Cub, a volunteer at Bert Fish Medical Center, New Smyrna Beach, Fla. and raised money for Jerry's kids.
Mr. Kuhn is survived by his companion and caregiver, Evelyn Scudder of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; two sons, Richard (Michaelene) of Plymouth and Leesburg, Fla. and Ronald (Sharon) Kuhn of Jacksonville, Fla.; a daughter, Melinda Maud (James) of Gulfport Miss.; brother, James of Winamac; five sisters, Mary Pletka of Orlando, Fla., Agnes Bossung of Monticello, Frances Knouff of Winamac, Leona Sommers of Winamac, Theresa Olson of Knox; four grandchildren, Laura Kuhn, Stacey Ahmed, Rachel Lyon and Randall Kuhn; five great grandchildren, Asim, Zachary, Aysha, Shelby and Justin. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Mary Jane (Thornburg) Kuhn.
Mass of Christian Burial was 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, New Smyrna Beach, Fla. Entombment followed at Sea Pines Memorial Gardens, Edgewater, Fla. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Settle-Wilder's New Smyrna Beach Chapel.
Donations may be made in Mr. Kuhn's memory to Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129 or to the Elk's Childrens Hospital, P.O. Box 49, Umatilla, FL 32784-0049.
Settle-Wilder Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 406 South Orange Street, New Smyrna Beach, Fla. was in charge of arrangements.

William G. Pletka
November 22, 1942 - January 11, 2006
William G. Pletka, 63, 5111 S.1050 W. Francesville (formerly of Winamac), died Jan. 11 at his residence. He was born Nov. 22, 1942 in Winamac to George and Kathryn (Ewing) Pletka.
On Aug. 30, 1980 at Bruce Lake, he married Nancy J. Wadford, who survives.
William has resided in Francesville for the past year. He lived in Winamac most of his life. He was retired from Bethlehem Steel, Burns Harbor, after 36 years. He was also a former employee of the Chesterton Tribune newspaper.
He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Winamac and attended St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pulaski.
He loved taking care of his four dogs, Ivy, Speedy, Flash and Daisy Mae. He enjoyed going to Shady Hill Speedway to watch his daughter race.
Survivors along with his wife Nancy include: a daughter, Kathy Saine of Francesville, a son Terry [Lynn] Pletka of Knox, two granddaughters, Amy Parcell and Jammie [Jeff Wagner] Watson, both of Elkhart. Seven great-grandchildren, Courtney Parcell, Ryan Parcell, Tea Parcell, Carl Arnett, Cyera Arnett all of Elkhart, R.C. Sturgill of Rochester, and Seth Wagner of Elkhart.
Also surviving are two brothers, Edward [Rebecca] Pletka of Chesterton and John M. Pletka of Port Richey, Fla.
He was preceded in death by three uncles Ralph Ewing, Richard Ewing and William Ewing and two aunts Dorothy Ewing and Eva Ewing.
Funeral services were held on Jan. 16 at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Winamac with Father John Mencsik officiating. Burial took place in St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery, located in Winamac.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
