Clara R. "Becky" Brennan
June 14, 1930 - March 3, 2006
Clara R. "Becky" Brennan passed away on Friday, March 3 at St. Joseph Hospital in South Bend surrounded by her loving family after a courageous fight with cancer.
She was born in Winamac on June 14, 1930 to the late George A. and Clara (Beckman) Selle.
She came to South Bend in 1948 following her graduation from Winamac High School and enjoyed working at The South Bend Tribune in the advertising department. Later, she was employed as a legal secretary at the law firm formerly known as Seebirt, Oare and Deahl.
On Feb. 26, 1954, she married the love of her life, Don Brennan, and together they enjoyed their family, many travels, jazz music, and cheering on the Hurryin' Hoosiers of Indiana University.
Loving her life as a stay at home mom, she served as President of: The Edison School PTA, The Bercliff Ladies' Club, The Bercliff Garden Club, and as Director of the Altar Guild of St. Michael and All Angels Church. She was a loving Den Mother in Cub Scouts; a wonderful Bluebird leader; and was a five-star short order cook for her well fed family. Once her children were grown, she returned to the workforce as Office Manager of The Brennan Agency, assisting Don, until his retirement.
Becky had a great sense of humor, a quick smile, a caring heart and a big laugh. She always gave great hugs.
Survivors include her loving husband of 52 years, Donald E. Brennan of South Bend; a son, D. Scott [Robin] Brennan of South Bend; and a daughter, Deborah [Alan] Johnson of South Bend. Five wonderful grandchildren: Shane, Brian and Jenna Johnson; Katie and Annie Brennan, all of South Bend.
She was preceded in death by two older siblings; George Robert Selle of El Cajon, Calif.; and Margaret L. Wilson of Winamac.
Many thanks to Dr. Mark Sandock, Dr. Bilal Ansari, and Dr. Thomas Troeger for their compassionate and committed care. A big thank you to the loving women of Michiana Hematology; and to the beautiful women on the Oncology floor at St. Joseph Hospital [6N] in South Bend.
Visitation was Monday, March 6 at Hickey Funeral Homes, 3516 East Jefferson Boulevard in South Bend. The funeral was celebrated on Tuesday, March 7 at St. Michael and All Angels Church, 53720 North Ironwood Road in South Bend, burial followed at Fairview Cemetery in Mishawaka.

Mildred Marie Winter
June 3, 1917 - March 3, 2006
Mildred Marie Winter, 88, of Winamac, died March 3 at the Pulaski Health Care Center. She was born in Monterey on June 3, 1917 to Joseph and Attie (Overmyer) Grindle.
On Jan. 31, 1948, she married Raymond Mathias Winter in Monterey. He died Nov. 13, 1998.
Mildred lived all of her life in Pulaski County. She was a former employee of Bendix Corp. and Robertson's Department Store, both of South Bend. She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, Christian Mothers, Ladies of Charity, and the Tippecanoe Twp. Home Ec. Club. She was a wonderful cook.
Survivors include: two sons Larry [Deb] Winter of Winamac and David [Jane] Winter of Jasper; five granddaughters April [Dave] Hetzner of Kokomo, Attie [Derek] Vogler of Charlotte, N.C., Amanda Winter of Winamac, Carrie Winter of Indianapolis and Katie Winter of Nashville Tenn., two grandsons, Paul Winter of Peoria, Ill., and Nathan Winter of Winamac, a great grandson Corbin Hetzner and a great granddaughter Johannah Hetzner, both of Kokomo.
Mildred was preceded in death by two sisters; Clara McCallan and Margaret Bair; and her husband Raymond Mathias Winter.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 6 at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Winamac with Father John Mencsik officiating. Burial took place in St. Anne's Cemetery in Monterey.
Frain Mortuary in Winamac was in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Pulaski Memorial Hospice.
James Edward Finnegan
January 29, 1917 - February 27, 2006
James Edward Finnegan, 89, of Monticello, died Feb. 27 at White County Memorial Hospital in Monticello. He was born Jan. 29, 1917 in Francesville to the late Edward and Lillian (McCarthy) Finnegan.
On April 2, 1940 in Rensselaer, he married Florence Mildred Culp. She survives.
James was a retired farmer, and a member of St. Francis Salano Catholic Church in Francesville, and a member of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church in Monticello. He was a 50-year member of the F.O.E. Lodge in Logansport and the Moose Lodge in Monticello.
He was also a member of the American Legion in Monticello. James and Mildred were once members of the "Dance of the Month Club" in Pulaski. He enjoyed dancing on Saturday nights and spending time with family on Sunday afternoons. James enjoyed going to auctions and caring for his animals and buying and restoring antique furniture.
Surviving along with his wife Florence Mildred (Culp) Finnegan of Monticello are: two daughters Nancy [James] Laumeyer of Rice, Minn., and Conda Toops of North Port, Fla.; three sons, Donald [Joan] Finnegan of Goodland, James Finnegan of Chalmers, and Michael [Brenda] Finnegan of Francesville. Also surviving are four granddaughters: Carla [David] Hatchlica, Aubrey [Rob] Suppinger, Megan [Jarred] Tribbett and Erin Finnegan; two grandsons Clayton Finnegan and Russell Finnegan, also a step-granddaughter Teresa [Brad] O'Farrell and a step-grandson Michael [Jan] Conrad, and two great grandchildren and six step-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Finnegan Vogel; a granddaughter Ann Laumeyer; and a grandson, Tony Toops.
A Funeral Mass was held on Friday March 3 at St. Francis Salano Catholic Church in Francesville with Father Paul White officiating. Burial took place in Roseland Cemetery in Francesville.
Querry-Ulbricht Funeral Home in Francesville was in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be given to the American Cancer Society.
Stanley E. Zaley Jr.
May 7, 1929 - March 10, 2006
Stanley E. Zaley Jr., 76, of Winamac, died March 10 at Pulaski Health Care Center in Winamac. He was born May 7, 1929 in Chicago and was the son of Stanley E. and Helen (Adamska) Staley Sr. On June 16, 1990 in Highland, he married Carol J. Olson. She survives.
Stan graduated from Hammond Technical High School and Jordan College of Music/Butler University. He received his Master's Degree from Vander Cook College of Music in Chicago. He was a retired band director for the Hammond City School System for 37 years. He played with the Buddy Pressner's Musical Group for over 30 years. His major instruments were the Clarinet and Saxophone.
He was a retired Christmas tree grower. He was Secretary-Treasurer of the Indiana Christmas Tree Grower's Association. He was also a member of the National Christmas Tree Grower's Association. Stan was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus Council #1561, both in Winamac. He also belonged to the Lake County and the Pulaski County Retired Teacher's Association.
Survivors along with his wife Carol are: three daughters, Diane Muffett of Lafayette, Christine [Daniel] Jewell of Durham, N.C., and Mary Zaley, of Cary, N.C., two sons. Jason [Mary] Zaley, of Bartlett, Ill., and Jonathon [Donna] Zaley of Schaumburg, Ill., two granddaughters Elizabeth [Adam] Dohanian and Melissa Zaley and five grandsons, Andrew Muffett, Ian Jewell, Jack Zaley, Nathan Zaley and Benjamin Zaley.
He was preceded in death by a son Gregory Zaley, his parents and his first wife Angeline Zaley. Funeral services were held on Monday, March 13 at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Winamac, with Father John Mencsik and Pastor Steve Fritchman officiating. Burial took place in St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery in Winamac.
Memorial Contributions may be given to: the American Cancer Society.
Walter F. Ayersman
February 7, 1929 - March 6, 2006
Walter F. Ayersman, 77, 5533 S. SR 119, Star City, died March 6, 2006 at Starke Memorial Hospital in Knox. He was born February 7, 1929 in Rowlesburg, WV, and was the son of Walter and Margaret G. (Riggs) Ayersman.
On March 30, 1985, in Winamac, he married Joan E. (Hedges) Yaden. She survives.
Walter was a retired locksmith. He had worked at Bethlehem Steel in Burns Harbor. He had also worked as a heavy equipment operator at the Levy Co. in Burns Harbor. He retired as a Correctional Sergeant from Westville Correctional Center. He had worked as a brakeman and conductor for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. He had operated a sporting goods store in Hobart. He was a former employee of the Pulaski County Journal.
Walter enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a former professional bow marksman, shooting for the Jennings Bow Co. Walter was a former member of the VFW, Moose, Eagles and the FOP in Hobart.
Walter was honorably discharged from three different branches of military: Navy, Army, Air Force.
Survivors along with his wife Joan are: two step-sons: Jim Gill of Michigan City, and Jon [Brenda] Gill of Star City; a step-daughter, Dava L. Yaden Mays [Shane Bonnell] of Star City; two grandsons: Jon Gill Jr. and Mitchell Bonnell; three granddaughters: Jerri Mays Klein, Alexa Gill and Kaley Bonnell. He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Jeremy Mays.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, March 9, 2006 at the Frain Mortuary in Winamac, with Pastor Paul Harwood officiating. Burial took place in the Winamac Cemetery. The VFW and the American Legion conducted graveside services.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Starke County Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
Ruth M. Schultz
March 7, 1926 - March 9, 2006
Ruth M. Schultz, 80, 1961 N. 1100 W., Medaryville, died March 9, 2006 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Lafayette. She was born March 7, 1926 in LaCrosse, and was the daughter of Eva (Marsh) Earle.
On June 10, 1944, in Francesville she married Edward K. Schultz. He died in August of 1983.
Ruth was a cook at the West Central Schools for over 30 years. She was a member of the Medaryville United Methodist Church, American Legion Auxillary, Hearth and Home, Home Ec Club, and the Pulaski County Chorus. She had been a Sunday school teacher for many years and a 1944 graduate of LaCrosse High School. She was also known as the "Cake Lady".
Ruth is survived by four sons: Kenneth E. [Charlene] Schultz of East Granby, Conn., Jerry A. [Dolly] Schultz of Fort Wayne, Donald M. "Mike" [Donna] Schultz of Austin, Texas, and Raymond T. [Joan] Schultz of Medaryville; and one daughter: Becky Sue [Robert] Stiller of Flora; five siblings: William Earle of Kouts, Louis Earle of San Pierre, Maurice Earle of Tucson, Ariz., and Les Earle and Joyce Hayes, both of LaCrosse. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her mother and her husband.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, March 12 at Querry-Ulbricht Funeral Home in Francesville, with Pastor Kevin DeKoninck officiating. Burial took place in White Post Cemetery in Medaryville.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Medaryville United Methodist Church.
June Paxton Mendenhall
March 2, 1919 - March 7, 2006
June Paxton Mendenhall, 87, 502 East 950 South, Star City, died March 7, 2006 at Pulaski Memorial Hospital in Winamac. She was born March 2, 1919 in Ladd, Ill., and was the daughter of Rufus and Mary (Loukaitis) Morgan.
On June 13, 1948 she married Larry Paxton. He died in 1983. On November 15, 1986 she married Carl J. Mendenhall. He died March 30, 2000.
June was a member of OES #96 in Winamac and the Pulaski Memorial Hospital Auxillary. She was a member of the Pulaski Presbyterian Church in Pulaski. She was a former choir member and Sunday school teacher. June loved playing cards, making quilts, sewing and reading. She was a homemaker and former employee of Miller's Department Store in Winamac. She had also worked as a grocery clerk and as a factory worker at the West Clock Co. June came to Pulaski County in 1932 from Hammond.
Survivors include: a stepson, Ron [Karen] Mendenhall of Star City; a step-daughter, Judy [Norman] Bathke of Medaryville; a sister, Betty (Morgan) Irven of Winamac; a nephew, William Irven; a niece, Patricia Robinson; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the Frain Mortuary in Winamac, on Friday March 10, with Marcia Cline officiating. Burial took place in Francesville's Roseland Cemetery.
