Kathryn E. Leech
October 3, 2005
Kathryn E. Leech, 97, of Indianapolis, died Oct. 3.
Ms. Leech was a lifelong friend of the fine arts and was a skilled potter. She and her late husband John, demonstrated a keen interest in students involved in higher education and provided support to them in many ways. She was a skilled and dedicated Christian educator and not only served her local church in education, but also regional entities such as the Church Federation of Indianapolis.
Survivors include two sons, Kim Leech of Carmel and Phil Leech of San Francisco and a daughter Joyce Frakes of Winamac. Also surviving are six grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
Memorial services were held on Saturday, Oct. 8 in the chapel of First-Meridian Heights Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis.
Crown Hill Funeral Home in Indianapolis was in charge of arrangements.
Lucille (Thierman) Hershman
June 18, 1910 - October 4, 2005
Lucille (Thierman) Hershman, 95 of Wheatfield, died Oct. 4 at her residence. She was born June 18, 1910 in Louisville, Ky. to Thomas and Pansy (Miller) Thierman.
On June 18, 1935 in Henryville, she married Vyron Lavelle "Skin" Hershman. He died May12, 1985. She was a member of the Medaryville Christian Church and was active in the Ladies Aide, Dorcas Circle, and the Golden Heirs of the church. She was also a retired teacher having taught for 26 years in schools in Beaver Twp., Francesville, North Judson and Gillam Twp. Schools and a member of the Pulaski County Retired Teachers Association. She lived most of her life in Medaryville area, coming to the area from Louisville, Ky, in 1940.
She loved to travel and had visited all 50 states and several foreign countries. She enjoyed life. She was a Christian lady and a great witness to all.
Survivors include: a daughter, Bonnie Joy [Thomas] Weltzin, Helena, Ala, five sons Vyron "Bill" [Ceclia "Pet"] Hershman and Stephen W. Hershman, both of Wheatfield, Fritz M. [Martha L.] Hershman, and Thomas T. [Pamela] Hershman, both of Rensselaer and Pete L. [Nita] Hershman, Memphis, Tenn., also surviving are 17 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and many great-great grandchildren and a nephew Tommy Thierman. She was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Thierman, and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the Medaryville Christian Church on Oct. 8 with Donald Nedza officiating. Burial took place in the Memory Gardens in Rensselaer.
Querry-Ulbricht Funeral Home in Francesville was in charge of arrangements.
Helen F. Penny
February 11, 1912 - October 8, 2005
Helen F. Penny, 93, 1832 North Private Road 190 East, Logansport, died October 8, 2005 at Chase Convalescent Center, in Logansport. She was born February 11, 1912 in Cass County, and was the daughter of Clyde and Blanche Buchanan Davidson.
On November 3, 1935 in Logansport, she married Benjamin Leslie Penny who preceded in death on May 22, 1999.
Helen retired in 1975 as a teacher from Lew Wallace High School in Gary. She was a member of Bethlehem Presbyterian Church and Clay Township Extension Homemakers. She was a 1929 graduate of Metea High School and Indiana University. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed watching I.U. basketball.
She is survived by two daughters: Judith Hoyt of Greenfield, and Sara [Peter] Walthery of Logansport; a son, Joe [Maria] Penny of San Diego; and a daughter-in-law, Judy Penny of Toledo, Ohio. Also surviving is a brother, [Betty] Davidson of Logansport; a sister, Ruth Snoke of Logansport; and grandchildren: David Penny and wife Jennifer Johnston of Mill Valley, Calif; Laura Penny and husband Moises Contreras of Carlsbad, Calif.; Sara Hoyt of Atlanta, Ga.; Kristin [Nathan] Bates of Boyne City, Mich.; Lisa [Michael] Grimsley of Redford, Mich; Jon Penny of Toledo; Lee [Leah] Walthery of Logansport; and Robin Walthery [David] Allen, Indianapolis; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers:Wendel and Galen Davidson; a sister, Georgia Davidson, and a son, Gerald Penny.
Visitation was held on October 10, 2005 at the Penny residence. Services will be held at a later date.
Gundrum Funeral Home in Logansport was in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church or the Cass County Community Foundation.
Rocco Joseph Calabrese
June 17, 1965 - October 11, 2005
Rocco Joseph Calabrese, 40, 612 S. Franklin Street of Winamac, died Tuesday, Oct. 11 at his residence. He was born in Winamac on June 17, 1965 to Rocco G. and Sharon K. (Hazlett) Calabrese. He was a former employee of the S & S Precast Company in Winamac.
He is survived by his mother, Sharon K. Calabrese of Rockwall, Texas; two sisters: Regina Calabrese of Winamac and Christina A. [Jason] Fritz of Rockwall, Texas. Five brothers: Carmen "Paul" [Corinna] Calabrese of Rockwall, Texas, Domenick [Tiffany] Calabrese of Indianapolis, Frank Calabrese, Ralph [Tennille] Calabrese and Anthony [Dorinda] Calabrese all of Winamac, and his maternal grandmother, Emma Hazlett of Zephyr Hills, Fla. Also surviving are two nieces and six nephews.
Private graveside services will be held with Rev. Denny Wilson officiating, burial took place in the Winamac Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be given to the American Cancer Society or to the National Kidney Foundation of Indiana.
Frain Mortuary in Winamac was in charge of arrangements.
Lorwin W. "Hank" Henry
December 5, 1926 - October 13, 2005
Lorwin W. "Hank" Henry , 78, of LaPorte died Oct. 13 in LaPorte Hospital. He was born Dec. 5, 1926 in Winamac to Herschel E. and Edith M. (Bader) Henry.
On Sept. 15, 1972 he married Harriet B. Kuta in LaPorte, she survives.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 15 at the Cutler Funeral Home in LaPorte with the Rev. Jeff Hines officiating, burial took place in the Patton Cemetery in LaPorte with full military rites.
Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society.
Eugene Field "Bud" Beatty
March 25 1925 - October 12, 2005
Eugene Field "Bud" Beatty, 80, of Granger died Wednesday, Oct. 12. He was born March 25, 1925 to David and Ethel (Wiesjahn) Beatty.
He is survived by his wife Anita, four sons, eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and an aunt, Mary K. Williamson of Winamac, along with cousins and a large host of friends.
Funeral services were conducted on Sunday Oct. 16 at the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home.
Albert Allen
February 17, 1936 - October 17, 2005
Albert Allen, 69, 19151 S. 1100W., LaCrosse, died October 17, 2005 at Porter Memorial Hospital in Valapraiso. He was born February 17, 1936 in Royalton, Ky., and was the son of Newton Lillie (Wireman) Allen.
On March 13, 1968 in DeMotte, he married Constance L. Woodard; she survives.
He was a retired Con Rail railroad car repairmen and served in the U.S. Army during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He attended the Medaryville Assembly of God Church. He enjoyed farming, mowing and working in his garden. Mr. Allen enjoyed traveling, watching TV westerns and reading cowboy stories. Surviving with his wife Constance are three sons: Brian Albert [Cheryl] Allen of Valparaiso, Andrew Lee [Nearvie] of Big Sandy, Tenn., and Eric [Debbie] Tibbs of Winamac. Also surviving are three grandchildren/great nieces, four sisters: Madeline Tetzloff of Michigan City, Susie Dickinson of Monticello, Bertha Todd of Wheatfield, and Sallie Tibbs of Ogden, Utah; and two brothers: Amos [Betty] Allen of Medaryville and James [Carol] Allen of Crown Point. He was preceded in death by a brother, Rex Allen, and a sister, Christine Woodard.
Funeral services were held on Friday, October 21, 2005 at Querry-Ulbricht Funeral Home in Francesville with Pastor Tom Dewlen officiating.
Military services will be conducted at the funeral home following the funeral services.
Memorial contributions may be given to assist the family with funeral expenses.
