Antonio Agatha (Arndt) Gudas
November 27, 1904 - October 30, 2005
Antonio Agatha (Arndt) Gudas, 100, 7229 S. 700 E., Kewanna, died on October 30, 2005 at 9:30 a.m. in Pulaski Memorial Hospital, Winamac.
Antonia Agatha Arndt Gudas was born on November 27, 1904 in Detroit, Mich., and baptized on December 25, 1904. Her parents Karl Gottlieb and Constance Barbas Arndt emigrated to the U.S. from Vilkaviskis, Lithuania via Essen, Germany where they lived temporarily and worked for the Krupp Ammunition Company. The family moved to Foley, Alabama in 1911 in search of a warmer climate and longer growing seasons. They pioneered there as they cleared the land to make it tillable. Antonia married Joseph Gudas on August 18, 1922 in Pensacola, Florida.
Joseph was an immigrant to the U.S. from Lithuania arriving in 1910. After their marriage they lived in Binghamton, New York where they owned and operated the Garsas Baking Company. Eventually they moved back to Foley where they farmed as well as ran a bakery. Three of their children Johanna, Algird and Joseph were born in Foley.
Eventually they moved to Chicago, as some of Antonia's sisters had settled there, where they operated a bakery. Eventually they moved to the Monterey and Winamac areas where they farmed. In 1952 they purchased a farm in Van Buren Township.
Born in the Winamac area were Mildred, Edwina, Mary, and Edmund.
Her husband, Joseph, died August 26, 1973.
She loved her family beyond measure - always looking for opportunities to visit with them. She was a wonderful hostess with fresh apple pies, fresh bread, homemade candy and cookies, and popcorn just waiting for takers. She loved having tea and coffee with any and all visitors. Then there was a goody bag to go home with the company to enjoy later.
She was able to travel to numerous activities in the family as her years built up! Latest was a trip to visit her sister Elizabeth Swirn of Foley, Ala., as Elizabeth celebrated her 100th birthday in 2002. While in Foley she visited her parents' gravesites as well as those of other friends and relatives. She also revisited her childhood stomping grounds as well as the Arndt family's original homestead. She attended great -great nieces and nephews weddings in Michigan.
She loved gardening and getting her hands down into the earth! This past summer a small garden was planted for her. She went out to weed and care for the plants at every opportunity. She harvested beets, radishes, lettuce, peas, potatoes, onions, tomatoes and big bouquets of flowers for her table.
The community was not neglected - she enjoyed attending fundraisers as well as giving money and goods.
She attended church and school activities with her grandchildren at every opportunity. She loved to hold the babies at birth, baptisms as well as birthday parties. When she became unable to be out walking because of arthritis she resigned herself to the mobility of "crawling" around, and a wheelchair for mobility.
Through the years of helping her husband Joseph plant the farm crops, she composed poems on fertilizer bags, which were put into a book, which was presented to the family and friends. The poem book showed her concern and love for the family and friends.
Her family has collected stories and anecdotes that Antonia wrote about her life in Detroit, Foley and other areas around the U.S. and will publish it as soon as commitments and time allows. She picked blueberries at the Ruhl's patch and loved it. She could recite poems from memory as well as sing hundreds of songs! She was fluent in the Lithuanian language and knew all of the old songs from memory too.
She had a lovely pet dog that went with her on her excursions out doors. Scooter looks for food from her.
