Norma Leitha Martin
Norma Leitha Martin, of Valparaiso, died Wednesday, May 15, 2002 at St. Margaret’s Hospital, Hammond, Ind. She was 72.
She was born in Hobart, Ind., the daughter of Lawrence and Hazel (Parker) Dailey, who preceded her in death.
On June 4, 1947 in East Gary, Ind., she married John A. Martin Sr., who survives in Valparaiso.
She is also survived by three sons, James V. (Jean) Martin of Valparaiso, Robert A. (Judy) Martin of Portage, Thomas D. (Laura) Martin of Valparaiso; a daughter, Kathleen A. (Nick) Vourazeris of Greece and a daughter-in-law, Deborah Martin of Valparaiso; two brothers, James (Judy) Dailey of Albequerque, N.M., David Daily of Griffith, Ind.; two sisters, Rose Slease of Crown Point, Ind. and Carol (Ken) Cantwell of Lowell, Ind.; 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by a son, John A Martin Jr., three brothers, Kenneth, Everett and Wilbur and a sister, Gail Daniels.
She was a life long resident and a home maker. She was a member of First Baptist Church n Hobart. She was a loving wife and mother.
Funeral services, Pastor Richard Brown officiating, are scheduled at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 18, 2002 at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, Portage Chapel. Interment will be at Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville.
Visitation is scheduled from 4-8 p.m., Friday at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, Portage Chapel, 6941 Central Ave., Portage.
Jacqueline I. Bachman
Jacqueline I. Bachman, of Liberty Twp., died Tuesday, May 14, 2002 at Porter Memorial Hospital, Valparaiso. She was 63.
She was born July 13, 1938 in Michigan City, Ind., the daughter of Leonard and Myrtle (Willett) Charlson, who preceded her in death.
On February 22, 1957 in Porter, Ind., she married Ralph Bachman, who survives in Liberty Twp.
She is also survived by four sons, Charles E. (Renee) Bachman of Grand Ridge, Ill., Harold (Jowanna) Bachman of Lilly, Ky., Kevin (Debbie) Bachman of Hobart, Ind. and Kenneth (Jennifer) Bachman of Valparaiso; three daughters, Brenda (Jack) Darnell of Porter, Kimberly (Robert) Collina of Havelock, N.C. and Jennifer (William) Gross of Valparaiso; two brothers, Carl (Cherry) Charlson of Chesterton and John (Patricia) Charlson of Valparaiso; a sister Lynette (Stephen) Rohe of Porter; 15 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
She was also preceded by a brother, Rickey Charlson and a father-in-law and mother-in-law, Edward and Alice Bachman.
She was a life long resident and was employed as a nurses aid at Porter Memorial Hospital where she retired in 1997. She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. She was a member of Westchester Bowling League and secretary of the Westchester Horseshoe League for 20 years. She loved camping, playing cards and Bingo.
Funeral services, Rev. Ronald Larson officiating are scheduled at 10 a.m. Friday, May 17 at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home. Entombment will be at Graceland Cemetery, Valparaiso.
Visitation is scheduled from 2-8 p.m., Thursday and from 9 a.m. until time of service at 10 a.m., Friday at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton.
Todd Ryan Swindle
Todd Ryan Swindle, of Valparaiso, died Saturday, May 11, 2002 at Porter Memorial Hospital, Valparaiso. He was 26.
He was born June 30, 1975 in Valparaiso, the son of David and Kim (Wilson) Swindle, who survive in Valparaiso.
He is also survived by a brother, Kurt (Debbie) Swindle of Valparaiso, a sister, Dana Swindle, of Valparaiso; nephews Brendon and Tyler Swindle.
He was preceded in death by maternal grandmother, Janice Dykstra and maternal step-grandfather Dean Dykstra and paternal grandfather, John Swindle.
He was a life long resident employed as a millwright with Local #1043. He was a graduate of Portage High School and of millwright school. He loved NASCAR racing, being outdoors and fishing.
Funeral services, Pastor Duane Schmidt officiating, are scheduled at 6 p.m., Tuesday, May 14 at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home Portage Chapel, 6941 Central Ave., Portage, Ind. Cremation will follow services at Heritage Crematory Portage, Ind. Ashes will be interred at McCool Cemetery, Portage at a later date.
Visitation is scheduled from 2 p.m. until time of service at 6 p.m., Tuesday.
Robert M. Cherepko
Robert M. Cherepko, of Valparaiso, died Thursday, May 9, 2002 at Porter Memorial Hospital, Valparaiso, Ind. He was 65.
He was born March 19, 1937 in Elizabeth, Pennsylvania, the son of George and Mary (Stioka) Cherepko, who preceded him in death.
He was married to Carol Isaacson, who survives in Valparaiso.
He is also survived by a daughter Susan (Brad) Mizgate of Valparaiso; four brothers, Paul (Arlette) Cherepko of Portage, Don (Pat) Cherepko of Wintersville, Ohio, Gene (Sondra) Cherepko of Pa., Rick (Leslie) Cherepko of Pa.; four sisters, Dolly (Bob) Rowe of Pa, Nina (Frank) Hranicky of Pa., Ann Brush of Hobart, Ind., Mary (Howard) Jones of Calif.; grandchildren, Skyler and Olivia Mizgate of Valparaiso.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, John and George Cherepko and a sister, Judy Smilley.
Robert was a local resident for 41 years and was owner/operator of Bob’s Body Shop in Chesterton. He was a member of Chesterton Moose Lodge #1623. He had a great love for old cars and met many friends at his body shop and his attendance at car shows and exhibitions.
Funeral services, Rev. Edward Mitchell officiating, are scheduled at 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 14 at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home. Cremation will follow at Heritage Crematory, Portage.
Visitation is scheduled from 4-8 p.m., with a Moose Lodge service at 6 p.m., Monday at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton.

LeRoy Joseph Brady Jr.
LeRoy Joseph Brady Jr., of Chesterton, died Wednesday, May 8, 2002 at Porter Memorial Hospital. He was 58.
He was born July 22, 1943 in Chicago, the son of LeRoy Joseph Sr. and Rosella (MacPherson) Brady.
On December 12, 1977 in Rensselaer, Ind., he married Marcia R. Brady, who survives.
He is survived by three sisters, Donna (Robert) Watt of Green Bay, Wis., Katherine “Katy” Brady of Green Bay, Wis. and Patricia (Keith) Zinkand of Cape Coral, Fla. and a brother-in-law, John McDonough.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Beverley McDonough.
He was an area resident for 12 years and was a property manager/pipefitter employed by Jewish Community Centers of Chicago. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He was a member of Dunes Masonic Lodge #741 and member of Pipefitters Union 597.
Masonic services are scheduled at 5 p.m., Sunday, May 12 at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home. Cremation to follow services, Heritage Crematory, Portage.
Visitation is scheduled from 1 p.m. until time of service at 5 p.m. at Edmonds and Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton.

Paul A. “Pat” Tilden, Sr.
Paul A. “Pat” Tilden, Sr., of Porter, died Sunday, May 26, 2002 at Porter Memorial Hospital, Valparaiso. He was 69.
He was born March 20, 1933 in Gary Ind., the son of William and Margaret (Osberg) Tilden, who preceded him in death.
On November 16, 1957 at St. Patrick Church, he married Arlene Deiotte who survives.
He is also survived by six children, Elizabeth Tilden, Cynthia Tilden, both of Porter, Paul (Maryellen) Tilden, of Chesterton, Sara Tilden, of Porter, Nicholas (Tricia) Tilden of Chesterton and Zachary Tilden, of Indianapolis, Ind.; five grandchildren, Patrick, Samuel, Marissa, Tessa and Jack; three brothers, William “Bud” Tilden and Jim (Bonnie) Tilden, both of Porter; George “Ed” (Mickey) Tilden, of Wis.; two sisters, Marge Winn, of Porter and Cathy (Dick) Mills, of New Hampshire.
He was also preceded in death by three children, Christopher, Marissa and Patrick in 1962.
Pat was the owner of Pat’s Liquors and Tilden Enterprises in Porter. He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served n the U.S. Army in Japan. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post #2511 in Porter and the American Legion Post #170 in Chesterton.
A mass of Christian burial, Rev. Eduardo Malagon officiating, is scheduled at 11 a.m. Friday, May 31 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 638 N. Calumet Road. Cremation will be at Calvary Crematory, Portage.
The family will receive friends from 3-8 p.m. Thursday at White-Love Funeral Home, 525 S. 2nd St., Chesterton. Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be given to St. Patrick Catholic School.
Evangeline C. Jones
Chesterton resident Evangeline C. Jones, 96, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at the Life Care Center of Valparaiso.
She was born Nov. 2, 1904, in Chesterton, the daughter of George Ross and Catherine (Bonnifield) Williams, who preceded her in death.
On Oct. 31, 1924, in Logansport, Ind., she married Chester A. Jones, who on Oct. 17, 1991, also preceded her in death.
She is survived by a sister, Edith K. Faires of Detroit, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Jones was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Chesterton.
Funeral services, Pastor Terry Rhine officiating, are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church, 434 S. Second St. in Chesterton. She will be interred at Chesterton Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at White-Love Funeral Home, 525 S. Second St. in Chesterton.
