Studebaker, born with a rare genetic disease called osteogenisis imperfecta (OI), the brittle bones disease, was the first case local doctors had witnessed. His family initially was given a poor prognosis, but with years of treatment at various Shriner’s Hospitals in Honolulu Hawaii, San Francisco and Chicago, he was able to attend high school and college and eventually made a successful career for himself.
Jonathan served as the Honorary coach of the East West Shrine Game for several years during the early to mid-1980’s. He wrote articles about school sports for the local newspapers and was active in his church youth group and was a delegate to the International Youth of Unity conference that was held annually near Kansas City, Mo.
He received his B.A in Information and Communication from Chico State University in 1987 and was an avid sports fan, working with Coach Bellotti and the CSU football team serving as their kicking coach.
Following graduation from CSU, he stayed on in Chico where he worked briefly with a local television station and later established Project Speak Out, giving motivational talks and educating people about the challenges of living with a disability. Recently he created a website to share his story with the broader Internet community. He sat on many local boards and committees in his hometown, including the Lion’s Club, ARC of Butte County, City and County Transportation Boards and the Planning Commission for the City of Chico.
According to newspaper accounts, Studebaker will long be remembered in Chico for the “Studebaker Strips” he demanded be built in the town that touts brick-like roads. The smooth strips were built into the intersections to help those with mobility problems negotiate the bumpy brick roads.
