Ralph P. Massoth Sr., age 84, of Lowell, IN, passed away on Thursday, October 31, 2002. He is survived by four children: Ralph P. (Fujiko) Massoth, Jr. of Universal City, TX, Betty (Philip) May of Lowell, Lindsey Massoth of Hebron and Linda (Matt) Lipton of Crown Point; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Jerry Massoth of West Lafayette, IN, Sylvester (Nonna) Massoth of Remington, IN; two sisters, Marie Zurawski of Cedar Lake, IN and Eleanor Eder of Calumet City, IL. He was preceded in death by his wife, MaryEllen; one daughter, Kathy Fuller, and 13 brothers and sisters.
Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Monday, November 4, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Edward's Catholic Church in Lowell, IN, Father Peter Muha officiating. Cremation will follow. Friends are invited to call on Sunday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Sheets Funeral Home, 604 E. Commercial Ave., Lowell, IN. Ralph was a member of St. Edward's Catholic Church in Lowell and was a retired cement contractor and dairy farmer. In lieu of flowers, memorials contributions may be given to the American Diabetes Association.
Ambrose R. Melvan
Ambrose R. Melvan, age 63, of Dyer, Indiana, died on Thursday, October 31, 2002. Mr. Melvan was born in Chicago, IL, the son of the late Joseph and Julia Melvan. He is survived by his friend and former wife, Georgia Melvan of Whiting, IN; two daughters: Kelly (David) Potts of Schererville, IN and Laura Salin of Schererville, IN; two brothers; Alex (Christine) Melvan of CT and Jerome Melvan of Dyer, IN; grandchildren, Amber Rose Salin and Takoda Potts; and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his brother, August Melvan.
Friends may call on Sunday, November 3rd, from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m at the Burns-Kish Funeral Home, 8415 Calumet Ave., Munster, IN. Funeral Services will be private.
Mr. Melvan was a retired Chicago Police Officer after 27 years of service.

Marita K. Mischka, age 46, of East Chicago, IN, died October 27, 2002. Survived by daughters, Tuesday Smith of Lake Station, IN, Samantha Barnes of Scranton, PA, parents, Artis and Beatrice Balentine of East Chicago, IN; sisters Gail Lomeli of San Antonio, TX, Oma (Sergio) Silva of Chicago, IL; brothers Roger (Janice) Balentine of San Antonio, TX, Michael Balentine of East Chicago, IN, David (Valerie) Balentine of Smithville, VA, John (Sharon) Balentineof Pensacola, FL, Frank Balentine of Las Vegas, NV, Charles Balentine of East Chicago, IN; nephews, Jose and Daniel Villarreal of Hammond, IN; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Visitation and funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2002 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Akins Funeral Home in Russellville, Alabama. Funeral service Saturday at 11:00 a.m. with a chapel service followed by burial in Knights of Pythias Cemetery. Information 256-332-1131.

Laurene Marie Moore, age 32, late of Schererville, IN, formerly of Calumet City, IL and Lowell, IN, passed away Tuesday, October 29, 2002. Loving daughter of John and Doris Moore of Calumet City. Cherished Sister of Jodene Moore of Gaithersburg, Maryland and Deborah Moore of Calumet City. Graduate of Thornwood High School, 1988 and the University of Illinois, 1992.

Charlotte Olsen
Charlotte Olsen, age 86, of Calumet City, IL, passed away on Thursday, October 31, 2002. She is survived by two daughters, Barbara (Dennis) Heaps of Lowell and Kay (Gary) Pingel of Lansing, IL; three grandchildren: Donna (Bob) Fox, Ken (Terri) Biesboer and Laura (Wendell) Coleman; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Kay Tuuk; two sisters-in-law, Annamarie Dekker and Ada Dekker; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth.
Funeral services will be held Monday, November 4, 2002 at 11:00 A.M. from the Schroeder-Lauer Funeral Home, 3227 Ridge Road, Lansing, IL. Burial, Mount Greenwood Cemetery, Chicago. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Jacqueline Pacurar
Jacqueline Reese Wheeler Vana Pacurar, of Hessville, passed away on Thursday October 31, 2002 at St. Catherine Hospital. She was born in Valparaiso, October 26, 1934 to Helen and Jess Wheeler. She is survived by four children: Van (Diane) Vana of Towanda, PA, Charles (Yvonne) Vana of Everett, WA, Lauri (Robert) Rymarczyk of Richmond, IL and Dana (Nick) Komocsar of Lakevill, MN; seven grandchildren: her mother, Helen M. Horvath; step-mother, Ruth Wheeler, three sisters, Karen, Kathy and Deborah and two brothers, Neal and Scott; numerous aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her son, Brian in 1991, stepfather Cyril Horvath in 1996 and her father, Jess Wheeler in 1999.
Chapel service will be Sunday at 2:00 p.m. DIRECTLY at the Graceland Cemetery in Valparaiso, Indiana, with the Rev. Kevin Miller, of the Whiting United Methodist Church, officiating. Visitation will be on Saturday, from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Oleska-Pastrick Funeral Home, 3934 Elm St., East Chicago, Indiana.
Mrs. Pacurar graduated from East Chicago Washington High School in 1952 and had been an active member of her class reunion committee. She was employed by the School City of Hammond as a Bus Driver for the past 17 years. Donations can be made to the Gavers Community Cancer Foundation. P.O. Shirley J. Seling
Shirley J. Seling, age 75, of Hobart, passed away on Thursday, October 31, 2002. Shirley was the former co-owner of The Jewel Shop in Hobart. She was active with American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post #54, Hobart. Shirley is preceded in death by her loving husband, Matthew, her son, Donald and a brother, Anthony Winski. Shirley is survived by one daughter: Donna J. (Joe) Gospodarek of Hobart; two grandsons: Justin Matthew and Kyle Joseph Gospodarek; two sisters: Vada Troxel of Merrillville and Edna Wittig of Hammond; and one brother: Ronald (Judy) Winski of Georgia. Numerous nieces and nephews and many dear friends and caregivers.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 4, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. at the Rees Funeral Home, 600 West Old Ridge Road in Hobart with Rev. Kevin McCarthy officiating. Burial will follow at Calumet Park Cemetery in Merrillville. Friends may call on Sunday, November 3, 2002 from 2 to 4 and 5 to 8 p.m. at the Rees Funeral Home, Hobart Chapel. V. Joan Snyder, age 72, of DeMotte, formerly of Crown Point, passed away on Tuesday, October 30, 2002. Survived by son, Larry (Bev) Snyder of DeMotte; daughter, Tami (Skip) Pelton of Crown Point; five grandchildren: Shanna and Mick Snyder, Jenni, Brad and Jason Pelton; three sisters; Caroline (Warren) Pierce of Crown Point, Charlene (Ted) Kolivas of South Haven and Gloria Dean (late Jim) Gentlemen of Crown Point; brother-in-law: Harold (Joan) Snyder of Lowell. Preceded in death by husband Shirl in 2000.
Mrs. Snyder was a graduate of Crown Point High School, class of 1949 and married her husband Shirl on April 19, 1952. Memorials are preferred to the First United Methodist Church, Crown Point.
Delbert W. Starkey
Delbert W. Starkey, age 65, of Hessville, passed away on Thursday, October 31 2002 at The Community Hospital, Munster. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Donnia; one son, Rev. Dennis (Tana) Starkey, Pastor of Bethel Baptist Church of Memphis, Indiana, formerly Pastor of Woodmar Baptist Church of Hammond; two sisters, Betty Reed of Hammond and Norma Bromfield of Gary; four brothers; Donald (Jane) Starkey, Clarence (Pat) Starkey, Jr. and Roland (Ann) Starkey, all of Hammond and Richard Starkey of Gary; several nieces and nephews and several great-nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and four sisters.
Funeral services Monday, November 4, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. from the Black Oak Baptist Church at 6502-25th Ave., Gary, Indiana, with Rev. Dennis Starkey and Rev. Bob Parnell officiating. Burial, Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, Schererville, IN. Friends are invited to call at the Bocken Funeral Home, 7042 Kennedy Ave., Hessville, on Sunday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Mr. Starkey was a native of Hammond and a lifetime resident of the Calumet Area. He was a member of the Black Oak Baptist Church and was an ordained Deacon. Also, an avid Southern Gospel music fan. He retired in 1999 after 13 years as a sales clerk with Truck Stops of America. In lieu of flowers, a Memorial Fund is being established in favor of the Black Oak Baptist Church.
