Edward Bednarek
Edward Bednarek, age 82, of Hegewisch, passed away Wednesday, October 30, 2002. He is survived by a son, Alan CPD (Therese CPD) Bednarek; a sister, Carol (late Dominic) Caporale and two grandsons, Jeff and Brian. Preceded in death by his wife, Virginia, two brothers, Steve Bednarek and Albin (Reggie) Bednarek and a sister, Sophie (late John) Jamrock.
Services will be held Monday, November 4, 2002 at 9:00 a.m. from the Opyt Funeral Home, 13350 Baltimore Ave. Chicago, to St. Columba Church for 9:30 a.m. Mass. Interment, Holy Cross Cemetery. Visitation Sunday, 2:00 to 9:00 P.M. Mr. Bednarek was retired from Pullman Standard in Hammond and was a WWII Navy Veteran.
Walter Eugene Baker
Walter Eugene Baker, age 82, passed away peacefully on October 29, 2002 in Hammond, IN, where he was born November 23, 1919, to Walter and Mary (Giles) Baker. Gene graduated from Hammond Tech in 1938. Served in the CCC's creating national parks in Oregon, then joined the Army as a Paratrooper when WWII broke out. He served in the 503rd Parachute Infantry during the Campaigns in Noemfoor Island and Corregidor. He was awarded a Silver Star and three Bronze Stars. After an Honorable Discharge he returned to work at Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. He married Bettyanne Lochte on August 23, 1945 in Chicago. Betty and Gene moved to Lansing, IL. where they lived for more than 50 years. After 42 years at Youngtown, Gene retired in 1981. He and Betty enjoyed a long busy retirement. They traveled around the United States and Canada and enjoyed camping and fishing. They attended many reunions of the 503rd over the years. They were married for 57 years, had four children, nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Gene was preceded in death by a sister, Gladys Dybala and his wife, Betty. He is survived by his children, Betty (Daniel) Gilfillan of Merrillville, IN, Patrick Baker of Lansing, IL, Lucinda (Bruce Parkinson) Baker of Ft. Collins, CO and Michael (Lisa) Baker of Lansing, IL; his grandchildren are Matthew (Elizabeth) Gilfillan of Valparaiso, IN, Kelly (fiance, Mike Shelton) Gilfillan of Lake Station, IN, Daniel Gilfillan of Logan, Utah, Lena Gilfillan of Merrillville, IN, Charlotte Baker and Amanda Baker of Chicago, Lily Baker Parkinson, Graham Baker Parkinson and Robin Baker Parkinson of Ft. Collins, CO. A new grandson is due in March of 2003 to Mike and Lisa. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Beryl Rhoads-Lloyd and her son, Timothy (Suzy) Rhoads and Family; brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Lottie Lochte and their daughters, Maureen (Stan) Kuzniar and Family and Karen Lochte; his nieces: Darlene (Frank) Urbanczyk, Jackie (Kevin) Brown and Robin (Dennis) Buskiewicz and their families. Walter was a Cub Fan all of his life. He loved to garden and loved animals, especially cats.
Friends may visit with the family on Friday, November 1, 2002 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Schroeder-Lauer Funeral Home, 3227 Ridge Road, Lansing, IL. Funeral Service Saturday, November 2, 2002 at 12:00 Noon at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 300 Wirth Road, Griffith, Indiana. Burial will be at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, Schererville, IN, where Walter will be layed next to his wife, Bettyanne.
Hilda F. Berry
Hilda F. Berry, age 83, of Griffith, passed away on Tuesday, October 29, 2002. She is survived by loving son, Sheldon (Beulah) Tucker of Griffith; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by loving husband Thomas in 1995.
Funeral Services will be Friday November 1, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at the Burns-Kish Funeral Home, 921 W. 45th Ave., Griffith, IN, with Barry Groh officiating. Interment will be at Ridge Lawn Cemetery, Gary. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday, one hour prior to service.

Candida Diaz Castro, age 75, of Portage, Indiana, passed away on Tuesday, October 29, 2002 at Porter Memorial Hospital, Valparaiso, IN. Born in Bayamon Puerto Rico on May 20, 1927 to the late Angel and Marcella Medina Diaz. Married Juan "Gappy" Castro who preceded her in death in 1997. Survived by sons: Emilio (Estrella) Rodriguez of Portage, IN, George Rodriguez of Hobart, IN, Harold (Lucy) Rodriguez of Gary, IN and Johnny (Noni) Castro of St. Petersburg, FL; daughters: Maria (Pete) Hernandez of Knox, IN, Rosa (Conrad) Villanueva of Porter Co., Mary Lou (Carlos) Rodriguez of Caguas, Puerto Rico; brothers: Angel (Elisa Diaz of Guayamo Puerto Rico; sister: Virginia (Carlos) Suarez of Statton Island, NY; 13 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; many loving nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by parents, husband, brother, Jesus and sister, Julia.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. directly at Nativity of Our Savior Parish, 2949 Willowcreek Rd., Portage, IN. Interment, Calvary Cemetery, Portage IN. Visitation Friday, November 1st, 2:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, Portage Chapel, 6941 Central Ave., Portage IN and also on Saturday, November 2nd from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. at the church.
Candida was an area resident for 2-1/2 years coming from Caguas Puerto Rico. She was a homemaker.
Donald D. Cole
Donald D. Cole, age 76, of Crown Point, formerly of Lake Wales, FL, passed away at St. Anthony Hospital, Tuesday, October 29, 2002. He was a retired Systems Analyst in the Metallurgical Dept. of U.S. Steel after 34 years of service He was a veteran of WWII, U.S. Army. Preceded in death by son, Michael in 1954, father, Hobart Cole and mother, Edna Novoa, and step-father Romero Novoa, brother, Hobart Cole, Jr. He is survived by wife of 54 years Jean Cole of Crown Point; two sons, Don, Jr. (Barbara) Cole of DeMotte, David Cole of Crown Point; seven grandchildren, Debby, Julie, Don III, Shaun, Corinne, Michael and Chris; three great-grandsons Don IV, Jonathan and Paul; brother, Jack (Irene) Novoa of Crown Point; sister, Betty Yack of Hobart; sister-in-laws Jerry Dieteker, of IL, Margaret Hughes of Hobart, Dorothy Carpenter, of CA, Mary Ann Atzhorn of Zionsville, and Shirley Rabourn of IL. Many loving nieces and nephews.

Thomas L. Companik
Thomas L. Companik, 65, of Hammond, passed away Tuesday, October 29, 2002 at his residence. He was a beloved son of the late Charles and Josephine (Martich) Companik. He is survived by two brothers, Charles (Diane) Companik of CA, Michael (Mary) Companik of Whiting; Sister, Anne Laurie (Dennis) Rowden of Whiting; nine nieces, Danielle Rowden (with whom he made his home), Ginger (Rick) Clotworthy, Laurie (Adrian) Marrujo, Kelly Companik, and Jan Stalker, all of CA, Dennane (Frank) Gomez, Angela Clark and Katie Companik, all of Whiting, Sharon (Rick) Dybal of Hammond; three nephews, Michael (Gayle) Companik, of TX, Kristopher (Holly) Rowden of China and Sean Rowden of FL; 17 great nieces and nephews and numerous cousins.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, November 2, 2002, at 11:00 a.m. at the Baran Funeral Home, 1235-119th St., Whiting. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:30 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Whiting with the Rev. Gary Scherer, C.PP.S. officiating. Interment St. John Cemetery, Hammond. Visitation at the Funeral Home Friday, 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Members of the Parish will offer prayers at the funeral home Friday at 4:00 p.m.
Tommy Companik was born on June 6, 1937, in East Chicago IN and was a lifelong resident of the Calumet Region. A member of the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Whiting, an employee of the Hammond Park Dept. with over 25 years of service. He was an avid sports fan, marathon runner and walker. In lieu of flowers, memorials to St. John School Endowment Fund would be appreciated. 219-659-4400.

Jack J. "John" Dixon, age 87, of Petaluma, CA, and a former resident of Cedar Lake, IN, passed away on Saturday, October 26, 2002. He is survived by his children: Frank (Peggy) Dixon of Carmel, IN, Patrick (Joan) Dixon of Evanston, IL, Sheila (Tony) Lukas of Petaluma, CA and Michael (Mary) Dixon of Merrillville, IN; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral service will be held Saturday, November 2, 2002, 1:00 p.m. at the Lincoln Ridge Funeral Home, 7607 West Lincoln Highway, Schererville, IN (Rt 30 east of Cline Ave.), with Rev. Joseph Kelchak officiating. At rest, Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, Schererville, IN. Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Friday evening from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Jack was a member of the St. James Catholic Church in Petaluma, CA. He was a retired employee of NIPSCO and a Veteran of WWII. Jack was an artist and a musician, and he loved to travel, especially out West. He lived in Carson City, Nevada, for many years.
