Ercil Askren McCarty, 92
Ercil Askren McCarty, 92, of Vero Beach, Fla. died June 1, 2001.
Born in Greensburg Aug. 20, 1908, she was the daughter of Bert and Mary Askren.
She married Frank McCarty in 1933 and he preceded her in death in 1985.
She graduated from Butler University where she was president of Alpha Delta Theta Sorority, and received an award for the second best female athlete at the university by scoring 700 points playing basketball.
She received her masters degree from Michigan State University.
Before moving to Vero Beach in 1972, she taught Spanish and English in Windfall, Charlotte, N.C. and Lansing, Mich. She retired in 1971.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Naomi Circle of the church.
The organizations to which she belonged include Tri Kappa Sorority, Order of the Eastern Star, Kles Club, Welcome Wagon, Vero Beach Yacht Club, Dodger Pines Golf Club and Golden Wheel.
She is survived by one son, Bill McCarty of Kalamazoo, Mich.; one daughter Susan Sleaford of Vero Beach; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Burial was in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Ft. Pierce, Fla.
Paul J. Geis, 78
Paul J. Geis, 78, Greensburg, died Thursday, June 14, 2001 at home.
Born Dec. 24, 1922 in Decatur County, he was the son of Lawrence and Rose (Volk) Geis.
He married Margaret Hodapp Aug. 19, 1961 and she survives.
He worked for 36 years at the telephone company in Greensburg, retiring in 1984, and was also a self employed farmer.
He was a member of the St. John's Catholic Church in Enochsburg and the Knights of Columbus in Greensburg.
He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II from Jan. 14, 1943 to Nov. 5, 1945, and was a prisoner of war for 14 months.
The accounts of his plane going down in Amsterdam March 22, 1944 is recorded in "The Diary of Anne Frank."
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Phillip Geis of Greensburg; one daughter Mary (Mrs. Paul) Bruns of Greensburg; four brothers, Anthony Geis of Vincennes, Francis Geis of Greensburg, the Rev. John Geis of Floyd Knobs, and Albert Geis of Batesville; two sisters, Rita Ambrose and Marian Raver, both of Anderson; and five grandchildren.
The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. John's Catholic Church in Enochsburg with the Rev. John Geis and the Rev. Gregory Bramlage officiating.
Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2-6 p.m. Sunday at Porter-Oliger-Pearson Funeral Home with a rosary at 6 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to Decatur County Hospice.
Edna Anna Schindler, 94
Edna Anna Schindler, 94, Sunman, died Thursday, June 14, 2001 at The Waters of Batesville.
Born Sept. 10, 1906 at Lookout in Ripley County, she was the daughter of Charles and Dena (Schutte) Schindler.
She was a member of Adams Lutheran Church in Batesville.
She worked with her sister in the operation of the Lookout Grocery Store years ago.
Surviving are two nephews, Richard Bredemeier of Atwater, Ohio and David Bredemeier of Celina, Ohio.
Her sister, Gertrude Bredemeier, preceded her in death.
The funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Neal's Funeral Home in Osgood with the Rev. Wm. Powlen officiating.
Burial will be in Adams Lutheran Cemetery in Batesville.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Adams Lutheran church.
Earl J. Baker, 55
Earl J. Baker, 55, Rushville, died at 10:05 a.m. Wednesday at the Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio.
Born Jan. 14, 1946 in Rush County, he was the son of Eldred and Letha (Hobbs) Baker.
He married Mary Robinson and she survives.
Prior to moving to Rushville last fall, he had lived in Jennings and Decatur counties.
He was a self-employed driver for the Amish.
In addition to his widow, survivors include three step-sons, Roland Thompson of Indianapolis, Kenneth Thompson of Kentucky and George Bartlett of Virginia; three step-daughters, Sandra Thompson of Westport, Sue Thompson of North Vernon and Gloria (Mrs. Mike) Roberts of Indianapolis; three sisters, Nina (Mrs. Billy Joe) West of Greensburg, Margie (Mrs. Ralph) Cummins of Clarksburg and Doris Jean (Mrs. Burchel) Moore of Connersville; two step-brothers, George Brock and Robert Harison, both of Connersville; one step-sister, Demie Robertson of Clarksburg; 14 step-grandchildren; and two nieces.
He was preceded in death by both parents and one brother.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Hopewell Cemetery in Rush County with the Rev. John Rollards officiating.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the cemetery.
Arrangements are being made by Moster & Cox Mortuary in Rushville.

Marion Elmeda Miller, 93, of Jeffersonville, died March 5, 2001.
Private graveside services will be held at Abundant Life Cemetery.
A memorial service will be held on Friday at 1 PM at Celebration Tabernacle, 632 Eastern Blvd., Clarksville, Indiana.

Robert Ermil Nix
Robert Ermil Nix, 71, of Jeffersonville, died February 21, 2001.
Visiting will be on Sunday from 1 to 8 PM at Scott Funeral Home.
Visiting will also be held on Monday from 11-2 at Pemberton-Bradley Funeral Home in Lynnville, IN.
The funeral will be there at 2 PM with burial in Lynnville Cemetery.
Beatrice "Dee Dee" Magness
Beatrice "Dee Dee" Magness, 75, died January 7, 2001, at Washington County Hospital.
Visiting will be from 3-8 PM on Monday, and 3-8 on Tuesday.
The funeral will be at 1:00 PM Wednesday at First Baptist Church of New Albany, with burial in Kraft-Graceland Cemetery.
