Judith K. Spears
Judith Kay Spears, 63, of Indianapolis, died from natural causes March 11, 1999, at her residence.
The daughter of Joseph and Cora (Livingston) Adkins, both deceased, she was born July 28, 1935, in Whitehall. She married Johnny G. Spears, who survives.
Mrs. Spears had been employed for 21 years as a billing clerk. She retired in 1998.
Other survivors include one son, Jeffrey G. Spears of Indianapolis; one daughter, Joyce A. Kirkhoff of Martinsville; one brother, Earl Adkins of Indianapolis; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
One brother, C.L. Adkins, preceded her in death.
The service will be 1 p.m. today at Singleton Community Mortuary in Indianapolis. Graveside services will be 3:30 p.m. today at Gross Cemetery in Owen County.
Martha Y. Nay
Martha Y. Nay, 62, of Plainfield, died from natural causes at 2:15 p.m. March 13, 1999, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. She had lived in Plainfield three years, most of her life in Mooresville and 18 years in Clay County.
Born Jan. 9, 1937, in Clay County, she was the daughter of Glen Leohr, deceased, and Mary (Woodburn) Loehr Harden who survives in Clay County. She married Gerald W. Nay of Plainfield Aug. 24, 1956. He survives.
Mrs. Nay was a graduate of Clay City High School and earned an associate degree in Business Administration from the University of Indianapolis in 1990.
She was a member of the Kingsway Christian Church in Plainfield and enjoyed free lance writing.
For three years she worked in the Accounting Department at the Free Methodist World Headquarters. Previously, she worked as office manager at Miller's Merry Manor in Mooresville for four years.
Other survivors include one son, Joe Nay of Camby; three daughters, Carla Crafton of Brazil, Rhonda Hauser of Dewey, Ill., and Lisa Reichard of McGuire AFB, N.J.; one brother, Harrison L. Harden of Clay City; two sisters, Rose Marie Weber and Mary Alice Schroer of Bowling Green; and 12 grandchildren.
One granddaughter, Anne Hauser; and her stepfather, Harrison Harden, preceded her in death.
The service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Kingsway Christian Church in Indianapolis. John Caldwell will officiate. Burial will be in White Lick Cemetery at Mooresville.
Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Jones Family Mortuary and 12 to 1 p.m. prior to the service at Kingsway Christian Church in Indianapolis.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia Society of America.
Howard Hammer
Howard "Bud" Hammer, 75, of Martinsville, died from natural causes March 12, 1999, at his residence.
Born March 9, 1924, in Camby, he was the son of Chester R. and Mary A. (Randall) Hammer. He married Faye Scott April 4, 1953. she survives.
Hammer attended Plainfield High School and was employed as a machinist at Link Belt (now Rexnord) in Indianapolis. He retired in 1986. He was also a farmer.
He attended the Hyndsdale Christian Church and Masonic Lodge 74 F&AM, both in Martinsville.
Also surviving are a son, Joseph Hammer of Martinsville; a daughter, Judy Leitzman of Martinsville; four brothers, Chester Hammer Jr. and Don Hammer, both of Mooresville, William Hammer of Plainfield and Russell Eugene Hammer of Lizton; three sisters, Lois William of Mooresville and Bertha Leak and Norma Held, both of Indianapolis; and six grandchildren, Nathan, Dale, William and Lee Letizman and Christopher and Dena Hammer.
The service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Costin Funeral Chapel. Dr. Jeanne D. Groom will officiate. Burial will be in Schultz Cemetery at Martinsville.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral chapel. A Masonic memorial service will be conducted at 7 o'clock Tuesday evening during visitation.
Betty Jo Record
Betty Jo Record, 33, of Quincy, died at 6:51 p.m. March 10, 1999, at R.R. 1, Box 254 in Quincy. She had lived in Quincy for two years, Mooresville for five years and Plainfield for 11 years.
Born Aug. 21, 1965, in Danville, she was the daughter of Robert Paul Denny Sr. of Danville and Dorothy Jean (Jackson) Denny of Plainfield. Her parents survive.
Mrs. Record had been employed as an inspector at I.T.S. in Plainfield for the last two years.
She enjoyed camping and the outdoors.
Other survivors include two sons, William Joseph "Joey" Record and Brandon Alan Record, both of Quincy; two brothers, Robert P. Denny Jr. of Monrovia and Billy J. Denny of Fillmore; two sisters, Darlene S. Templeman of Greencastle and Bobbie A. Lambert of Plainfield; maternal grandparents, Albert and Mildred Jackson of Illinois; and paternal grandmother, Charolotte Denny of Paragon.
The service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Jones Family Mortuary in Mooresville. John Ketchum will officiate. Burial will be in Fairfield Friends Cemetery at Camby.
Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary.
Memorial contributions would be welcomed by the family.
Harold Skaggs
The service for Harold "Shorty" Skaggs was 11 a.m. March 13, 1999, at Costin Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Kevin Able officiated.
Skaggs, 83, of Martinsville, died Wednesday in Morgan County Memorial Hospital.
Marylin James was organist.
Taped musical selections included "Wind Beneath My Wings," "Supper Time" and "The Old Rugged Cross."
Pallbearers were Chance, Chad and Davey Skaggs, Jeff Hicks, Bryan and J.D. Pryor, Justin Lane and Bob Strader.
Burial was in Centennial Cemetery.
Emerson N. Thomas
The service for Emerson N. Thomas was 2 p.m. March 13, 1999, at Neal & Summers Mortuary. The Rev. Darrell Miller and Brother Joe Mitchell officiated.
Thomas, 73, of Martinsville, died Thursday at Bloomington Hospital.
Julie Jesse sang "Daddy's Hands." Beth Ann Higginbotham sang "Grandpa," accompanied on the piano by Julie Jesse."
Taped musical selections included "How Great Thou Art," "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Angel."
Pallbearers were Biran Stanger, Nathan Shinkle, Cory and Dave Drake, Steve Bowman and Junior Parsons.
American Legion Post 230 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1257 conducted military graveside rites.
A memorial service was conducted at 7 o'clock Friday evening during visitation at the mortuary.

Catherine F. Pottorff
The service for Catherine F. Pottorff was 10:30 a.m. March 13, 1999, at Neal & Summers Mortuary. The Rev. Jeff Sexton and Pastor Burt Brock officiated.
Mrs. Pottorff, 79, of Martinsville, died Wednesday at Heritage House Convalescent Center.
Mary Brock was pianist. Vocalists were Brenda Hill and Carol Piety and Pastor Burt Brock.
Pastor Burt Brock, accompanied on the piano by Mary Brock, sang "Zion's Hill." Carol Piety and Brenda Hill sang "If I Could Hear My Mother Pray Again" and "Serenaded by Angels," accompanied by Carol Piety on guitar.
Brenda Hill gave a testimony on the life of Catherine F. Pottorff, testifying to the lifelong commitment she had with the Lord. Members of the congregation were asked to share memories of Mrs. Pottorff, and many responded with past reflections.
Steve Pottorff, her son, read a poem titled, "Thank You."
Mrs. Pottorff was preceded in death by one son, Phillip Pottorff, and one daughter, Phyllis Pottorff. This information was omitted from the obituary in error.
Pallbearers were Robert Dale "Bob" Betts, Paul Cox, Gary, Jerry and Guy Fogleman Jr., and Larry Curtis.
Burial was in South Park Cemetery. Pastor Burt Brock conducted the committal service with the Rev. Jeff Sexton closing with scripture and prayer.
