Millard L. Sprunger
Millard L. Sprunger, 90, Berne, died in Swiss Village at 8:55 p.m. Tuesday.
He was born on November 14, 1908 in Adams County to Rufus and Cora Luginbill Sprunger and married Florine Augsburger on March 4, 1934; she survives.
He was a retired upholsterer, having worked at the former Dunbar Furniture Co. in Berne more than 35 years. He was a member of Grace Bible Church in Berne.
Other survivors are a son, Lynn W. Sprunger of Berne; two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Arlene) Huffman of Fort Wayne and Mrs. Eric (Joan) Sprunger of Berne; a brother, Raymond Sprunger of Berne; three sisters, Mrs. Elmer (Helen) Beer, Mrs. Lester (Ada Marie) Frank, and Mrs. Edward (Marjorie) VonGunten, all of Berne; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home in Berne. Burial will be in MRE Cemetery, west of Berne.
Betty L. Alverson
Betty L. Alverson, 70, 1106 Russell St., died at 3:55 a.m. Sunday at home.
She was born on October 19, 1928 in Sullivan, Illinois, to Edward J. and Thelma W. Hillard Baker and married Ralph W. Alverson on November 23, 1946; he died on February 21 of this year.
She retired in 1985 from Wayne Novelty Co. in Decatur after a 14-year career and was a member of Decatur Nazarene Church.
Surviving are three sons, Tom Ramsey of Lima, Ohio and Kent and Keith Alverson, both of Decatur; two daughters, Charlyn Alverson-Ramsey of Lima and Phyllis Alverson of Decatur; two sisters, June Peel of Lima and Mable Hanley of Las Vegas, Nevada; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A sister, Della Thieme, is deceased.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Zwick and Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur, with burial in Ray Cemetery, west of Monroe. Visiting hours are until 4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. today.
Preferred memorials are to the Adams County chapter of the American Cancer Society.
Richard C. Briede
Richard C. Briede, 73, Indianapolis, died there Monday.
He was born in Decatur on April 26, 1926 to Paul and Matilda Briede and married Lenor A. Jaminski, who survives.
He was a civil engineer for more than 36 years at Clyde E. Williams and Associates in Indianapolis and served as its vice president of transportation engineering. He retired in 1996.
He was a member of St. Monica Catholic Church in Indianapolis; the American Legion; and the Knights of Columbus. He attended St. Joseph's College, then graduated from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Among survivors are two sons, Richard P. and David G. Briede, addresses unavailable; four daughters, Diane M. Flora, Bridget G. Moncilovich, Ann T. David, and Mary E. Briede, addresses unavailable; and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in St. Monica Catholic Church, with burial and private graveside services in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery at Decatur.
Visiting hours are until 8 p.m. at Leppert and Hensley Mortuary, Indianapolis.
Preferred memorials are to the American Cancer Society.
Local arrangements are by Zwick and Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur.
Thomas V. Lackey
Thomas V. Lackey, 68, Fort Wayne, died Sunday in St. Joseph Medical Center.
Among survivors are his wife, Geneva; six stepdaughters; a stepson; three sisters, including Sharon Tepin of Monroeville; and a brother.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Highway of Holiness Church, Fort Wayne, with visitation until 5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. today in the church. Burial will be in Covington Memorial Gardens, Fort Wayne.
Frederick W. Conrad
Frederick W. Conrad, 78, Decatur, died at 9:19 p.m. October 28 in the extended care unit of Adams County Memorial Hospital after having been a patient there for a week.
He was born on November 15, 1920 in Muncie to Fred W. Conrad Jr. and his wife, the former Ruby W. Anderson. He married Marjorie M. Springer on October 12, 1943; she survives.
He retired in 1982 from Central Soya after a 37-year career. He served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific and European theaters of operations during World War II.
Other survivors are a son, Terry K. Conrad of Decatur; a daughter, Mrs. David (Connie J.) Singleton of Venice, Florida; two sisters; two half-sisters; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A sister is deceased.
Private family graveside services were held Saturday in Decatur Cemetery, with local arrangements by Zwick and Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur.
Preferred memorials are to the Arthritis Foundation.
Wilhelmina S. Gambrell
Wilhelmina S. Gambrell, 90, Fort Wayne, died October 15 in Lutheran Home. Among survivors are two sons; two daughters; two brothers; and three sisters, including Florence Berning of Hoagland.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in D.O. McComb and Sons Foster Park Funeral Home, Fort Wayne, with burial in Lindenwood Cemetery, Fort Wayne. Visiting hours are 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday.
Richard P. Hamilton
Richard P. Hamilton, 76, Kendallville, a native of Decatur, died October 29 at home. He was the retired superintendent of the East Noble School Corp.
Among survivors are his wife, Doris, and four sons.
Funeral services were held this afternoon, with burial in Lakeview Cemetery at Kendallville.
Terry L. Smitley
Terry L. Smitley, 52, rural Decatur, a lifelong Adams County resident, died at 3:10 p.m. Wednesday at his business, Sir Lunch-a-Lot, in Decatur.
He was born on June 27, 1947 in Decatur to Herbert and Virginia Worden Smitley, who live in Decatur. He married Sylvia Buettner on October 15, 1972; she also survives.
He was a deputy sheriff with the Adams County Sheriff's Department from January, 1971 to March, 1999, when he retired. He was named by Sheriff Bill Crone as the director of the Adams County Community Corrections Center at the county jail after he ended his service as a deputy sheriff.
During his law enforcement career, he served with Sheriffs Harold August, Tom Coolman, Kerry Uhrick, and Bill Crone; was deputy chief for four years; was in charge of the sheriff's reserves for many years; and became the first canine officer in the county. He also was a candidate for the Democratic nomination to be sheriff in 1986.
In 1987, Mr. Smitley and Tom Coolman founded Sir Lunch-A-Lot and operated it jointly until 1990, when Smitley bought Coolman's share of the business.
Prior to joining the sheriff's department, he worked at the Fruehauf Trailer plant in Fort Wayne.
He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Berne and had been active in jail ministries for many years.
Other survivors are a daughter, Dianna D. Smitley of Decatur; three brothers, Nick Smitley of Fort Wayne and Mike and Ronnie "Sam" Smitley, both of Decatur; four sisters, Arlene Wallace of Fort Wayne, Sandy Stevens of Bradenton, Florida; Mrs. John (Joyce) Buck of Muncie; and Mrs. Mick (Becky) Gage of Decatur; and a granddaughter.
Two sisters are deceased, Sharon Smitley and Brenda Duff.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in Zwick and Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur, with burial in Salem United Church of Christ Cemetery at Magley.
Visiting hours are 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Sunday.
Preferred memorials are to the jail ministry of Bethel Brethren in Christ Church at Berne or to the Harley Smitley Education Fund.

Charles J. Cour, 66, Fort Wayne, died Monday in St. Joseph Medical Center, Fort Wayne. Among survivors are his wife, Catherine; two daughters; two sons, including Robert Cour of Monroeville; a sister; and a brother.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in C.M. Sloan and Sons Funeral Home, Fort Wayne, with burial in Highland Park Cemetery, Fort Wayne.
Visiting hours are 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday.
Margaret E. Berg
Margaret E. Berg, 71, Fort Wayne, died Thursday at home.
Among survivors are her husband, Herbert Berg; seven sons, including John F. Berg of Monroeville; four daughters; two brothers; and a sister.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Fort Wayne, with burial in Catholic Cemetery, Fort Wayne. Visiting hours are 1-5 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday in Tom Mungovan Funeral Home, Fort Wayne.
Norman L. Mohr
Norman L. Mohr, 61, Woodburn, a native of Monroeville, died Sunday at home. Among survivors are his wife, Nancy; two sons; and two daughters.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Fort Wayne, with burial in the church cemetery. Visiting hours are 4 p.m. Wednesday in Slade Funeral Home, Payne, Ohio.
Wanda R. King
Wanda R. King, 79, College Station, Texas, died Thursday in St. Joseph Hospital at College Station.
Among survivors are two sons; a stepson; and a sister, Pauline Niblick of Berne.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Thoma-Rich-Hewitt-Chaney Funeral Home, Bluffton, with burial in Stahl Cemetery, Bluffton. Visiting hours are noon-2 p.m. Sunday.
Harold T. Scheumann
Harold T. Scheumann, 88, Fort Wayne, died Sunday in Riverbend Nursing Home. Among survivors are two sons; a daughter; a brother; and three sisters, including Gertrude Deister of Hoagland.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Emmaus Lutheran Church, Fort Wayne, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Fort Wayne. Visiting hours are 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday in Klaehn, Fahl, and Melton Funeral Home on Winchester Rd. in Fort Wayne.
Dorothy D. Bienz
Dorothy D. Bienz, 85, Decatur, died in Woodcrest at 7:15 a.m. today. Funeral arrangements are pending at Zwick and Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur.
Katie Brubaker
Katie A. Brubaker, 46, West Alexandria, Ohio, died October 5 at home.
Among survivors are her husband, Tom Brubaker; two sons; two daughters; three brothers, Josiah Beachey of Linn Grove, Henry Beachey of Geneva, and William Beachey of Berne; and three sisters, including Ella Yoder of Berne.
Funeral services were held October 8, with burial in Preble Memory Gardens in West Alexandria.
Ivan Harold Ramsey
Ivan Harold Ramsey, 89, Texarkana, Arkansas, died at 8:20 p.m. October 29 in St. Michael's Hospital at Texarkana, Texas.
He was born in Adams County on December 21, 1909 to Rufus F. and Ella Knavel Ramsey and married W. Marcill Ewart; she is deceased.
He was a retired machine operator for Kunkel Valve Co. in Fort Wayne, a former member of Moose Lodge 1311 in Decatur, and a life member of Masonic lodges in Fort Wayne and Michigan.
Surviving are a son, Ron Ramsey of Vermontville, Michigan; two stepsons, Robert Ewart of Texarkana, Arkansas, and Charles Ewart of Geneva; a stepdaughter, Bonnie Ransom of Kimmell, Indiana; two brothers, Russel Ramsey of Lansing, Michigan and Paul Ramsey of DeWitt, Michigan; a sister, Cleona Greenlee of Lansing; 15 great-grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.
Deceased are a sister, Naomi Krick, and two brothers, Kenneth and Marion Ramsey.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Zwick and Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur, with burial in Decatur Cemetery. Visiting hours are 6-8 p.m. Wednesday.
Preferred memorials are to the donor's choice.
Tina K. Yoder
Tina K. Yoder, 31, Berne, died at 4:25 a.m. Tuesday in Adams County Memorial Hospital.
She was born on January 27, 1969 in Miami, Florida, to Roy R. and Linda Dymond Payne, who live in Berne, and married Paul L. Yoder on June 14, 1992; he also survives.
She was a certified nursing assistant, having worked at the hospital for four years. She was also a member of First Missionary Church in Berne.
Other survivors are a son, Zachary H. Yoder, at home; two daughters, Brianna R. and Tiffany T. Yoder, both at home; three brothers, Brian and Russell Payne and Roy R. Payne Jr., all of Sarasota, Florida; and paternal grandmother Catherine Payne of Berne.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in First Missionary Church, with burial in MRE Cemetery, west of Berne.
Visiting hours are 1-4 p.m. and 5-9 p.m. Thursday and 8-9 a.m. Friday in Yager-Kirfchhofer Funeral Home, Berne, and 9:30-10:30 a.m. Friday in the church.
Preferred memorials are to the family.
