Everett L. McLaughlin
Among survivors are six daughters, including Amanda Meyer of Decatur; three sons; five brothers; and two sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Elzey and Haggard Home for Funerals, Fort Wayne, with burial in Prairie Grove Cemetery in Allen County.
Visiting hours are 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday.
Benjamin W. Mertz
Benjamin W. Mertz, 68, of Fort Wayne, died in Regency Place Nursing Center at 12:45 a.m. Thursday.
He was born on February 22, 1935, in DeKalb County to Walter B. and Clara Krehl Mertz.
He lived in Decatur from 1990 to April of this year and was employed in the workshop operated by Bi-County Services. He attended New Life Fellowship Church in Decatur.
Surviving are two sisters, Doris Prochnow and Norma Hartman, both of Fort Wayne, and some nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Haggard and Sefton Funeral Home, Decatur, with burial in Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery at Corunna, Indiana.
Visitation is 1-2 p.m. Sunday.
Preferred memorials are to Bi-County Services, which is based in Bluffton.
Paul Rykard
Paul Rykard, 63, of Fort Wayne, died on Wednesday at home.
Among survivors are his wife, Billie; two sons, including William E. Rykard of Decatur; a stepson, Robert Zimmerman of Monroeville; two stepdaughters; a brother; and two sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Elzey-Patterson-Rodak Home for Funerals, Fort Wayne, with burial in Prairie Grove Cemetery, rural Allen County.
Visiting hours are 1-6 p.m. Sunday.
Clarence G. Hook
Clarence G. Hook, 85, of rural Decatur, died on Tuesday in Adams County Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Adams County on October 4, 1918 to Roy C. and Lorena Neadstine Hook.
He married Chrystal V. Christner on December 14, 1946; she died on March 7, 1995.
He was a tool and die maker at the Zollner Corp. plant in Fort Wayne for 37 years and was chaplain at American Legion Post 43 in Decatur for 20 years. He was a member of the color guard at Legion Post 43 and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Surviving are a son, Le C. Hook of Decatur; a sister, Katie Bonifas of Decatur; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and his companion, LaVerne Thomas of Decatur.
A daughter is deceased.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Haggard and Sefton Funeral Home, Decatur, Burial will be in Springhill/Backesto Cemetery, rural Berne, with graveside military rites by the Legion Post 43 color guard.
Visiting hours are 2-8 p.m. Friday.
Preferred memorials are to American Legion Post 43 or its color guard.
Raymond M. Thieme
Raymond M. Thieme, 75, of Decatur, died at 9 p.m. Tuesday in Woodcrest Nursing Home, Decatur.
He was born on December 25, 1927 in Adams County to Richard and Sophia Hockemeyer Thieme.
He married Esther Werling on May 15, 1954; she died on March 2 this year.
He retired in 1990 as a laboratory technician at the Central Soya plant in Decatur (now part of the Bunge Corp.), having worked there 44 years. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Decatur and the Lutheran Laymen's League.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Alan (Ruth Ann) Hutker of Decatur; two sons, Ron A. and Larry L. Thieme, both of Decatur; a sister, Alma Geiger of St. Marys, Ohio; two brothers, Ervin H. Thieme of Fort Wayne and Arthur Thieme of Palm Harbor, Florida; eight grandchildren; a stepgrandson; three great-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
A grandson, three sisters, and a brother are deceased.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Zwick and Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur, with burial in Decatur Cemetery.
Visiting hours are 1-3 and 7-9 p.m. today.
Preferred memorials are to the seventh grade and eighth grade class trip at Zion Lutheran School in Decatur.
C. Eugene Sprunger
C. Eugene Sprunger, 82, of Berne, died at 4:49 p.m. Tuesday in Swiss Village from complications of a stroke.
He was born on August 23, 1921, in Adams County to Robert L. and Rhoda Liechty Sprunger.
He married Gladys Zimmerman on August 1, 1952 and she survives.
He taught vocational agriculture and biology at Bellmont High School for 15 years. A member of First Mennonite Church at Berne, Mr. Sprunger and his wife worked for the Mennonite Central Committee in the African nation of Zimbabwe from 1984-86.
Other survivors are two sons, Dean Sprunger of Goshen and Dale Sprunger of Inman, Kansas; three daughters, Mrs. Lowell (Dianne) Birkey of Des Moines; Mrs. Brian (Denise) Fry of Phoenix; and Deb Martens of Berne; three brothers, Don and Roy Sprunger, both of Berne, and Rev. Sam Sprunger of Hammond; a sister, Mrs. James (Betty) Gurley of Ann Arbor, Michigan; and 14 grandchildren.
Two brothers are deceased.
A memorial service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the chapel at Swiss Village, with burial in MRE Cemetery, rural Berne.
Visiting hours are 6-8 p.m. Friday in Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home, Berne, and 9-10:30 a.m. Saturday in the chapel.
Preferred memorials are to the Mennonite Central Committee.
Betty J. Wagner
Betty J. Wagner, 69, of Monroeville, a former Decatur resident, died on Tuesday in Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne.
Among survivors are her third husband, Clifford A. Wagner; two sons, including Lester Lillich of Decatur; a daughter; and a brother, Carl Johnson of Decatur.
Her first two husbands are deceased: Lester L. Lillich and Christopher Armstrong.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Zwick and Jahn Funeral Home's Jacobs Chapel in Monroeville, with burial in Monroeville Memorial Cemetery. Visiting hours are 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday in Jacobs Chapel.
Merle Sheets
Merle Sheets, 91, formerly of Wren, Ohio, died at 8:35 p.m. Wednesday in Woodcrest Nursing Center, Decatur.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Zwick and Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur.
Arley L. Johnson
Arley L. Johnson, 93, of Fort Wayne, died on Tuesday at home. He was a native of Adams County.
Among survivors are a daughter and a son.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in the chapel at Greenlawn Memorial Park of Fort Wayne, with burial there.
Donald M. Roe
The obituary notice for Donald M. Roe, 68, Fort Wayne, contained errors which were in information provided by a Fort Wayne funeral home.
A surviving sister of Mr. Roe is Bonnie Noll of Decatur, not Bonnie Rich of Salem. His surviving brothers are Deryll and Denny Roe of Decatur, not Daryl and Denny Roe of Salem.
Funeral services for Mr. Roe were held Wednesday in D.O. McComb and Sons Maplewood Park Funeral Home, Fort Wayne, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
Ruthella Creek
Ruthella Creek, 88, of Bluffton, died on Wednesday in Bluffton Regional Medical Center.
Among survivors are two sons, including David E, Creek of Decatur; a daughter; and three sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Thoma-Rich-Hewitt-Chaney Funeral Home, Bluffton, with burial in Six Mile Cemetery at Bluffton. Visiting hours are 4-8 p.m. today.

Martha J. Romine, 76, Portland, died January 25.
Among survivors are her husband; four sons, including Richard Romine of Geneva; two daughters; a brother; and two sisters.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, with burial in G

Ward W. Schroll, 85, North Manchester, died on Tuesday.
Among survivors are a son; two daughters; and two sisters, including Dorothy Rawlinson of Decatur.
Funeral services were held today, with burial in Fariview Cemetery at Servia, Indiana.
Dolly Stanley
Dolly Stanley, 72, Huntington, died on Monday.
Among survivors are a son; five daughters; and five sisters, including Honor Bade of Decatur.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Gospel Community Church, Huntington, with burial in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Visiting hours are 2-8 p.m. today in the church.
Sharon K. Downey
Sharon K. Downey, 51, of rural Decatur, died at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at home.
She was born on March 3, 1952, in Franklin, to Dale E. and Pauline I. Alexander Copeland, now residents of Greenwood.
She married Mike A. Downey on July 16, 1972; he survives.
She was a deputy auditor in the Adams County Auditor's office and, prior to that, was assistant manager of the First Federal Savings and Loan Association office in Decatur. She was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Decatur.
Other survivors are a daughter, Kimberly Kohne of St. Louis, Missouri; a son, Jason Downey of Altoona, Iowa; two brothers, Steve T. Copeland of Greenwood and Randy Copeland of Alma, Illinois; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday in St. Mark's United Methodist Church, with burial in Acton Cemetery at Acton, Indiana, including a graveside service at 12:30 p.m.
Visiting hours are 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday in Haggard and Sefton Funeral Home, Decatur; 10:30-11:30 a.m. Friday in St. Mark's church; and 10 a.m.-noon Saturday in Pleasant Valley Church, near Acton.
Preferred memorials are to the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition and to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund.
Edith M. Walters
Edith M. Walters, 90, of Decatur, died at 8 a.m. Tuesday in Woodcrest Retirement Community.
She was born in Sturgis, Michigan, on August 13, 1913 to William and Myrtle Sunderland.
She married Raymond I. Walters in 1933; he died in 1981.
She worked at the Youth and Community Center in Decatur (now known as Riverside Center) for 25 years and, during that time, served meals to John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan, before they were elected president, and to Robert F. Kennedy.
She was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Decatur for many years and held numerous church offices. She was also a member of the Pythian Sisters Sorority, the TOPS organization, and her church's Women's Society.
Surviving are three daughters, Vera M. Petch and Helen M. Walters, both of Decatur, and Thelma J. Hinshaw of Anderson; a sister, Helen Davis of Fort Wayne; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A sister and three brothers are deceased.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel at First United Methodist Church, with burial in Decatur Cemetery.
Visiting hours are 4-7 p.m. Thursday in Haggard and Sefton Funeral Home, Decatur, and 10-11 a.m. Friday at the church.
Preferred memorials are to the church or to Family Hospice of Northeast Indiana, at Berne.
Martha L. Doherty
Martha L. Doherty, 66, of Decatur, died at 12:50 a.m. Tuesday in Adams County Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Decatur on November 3, 1937, to Carl and Georgia Hower Shaw and was a lifelong Adams County resident.
She was first married to Chancy M. Betz Sr., then was married to Larry Doherty. Both are deceased.
She was a homemaker and a member of Grace Bible Missionary Church in Decatur.
Surviving are two sons, Chris Betz of Sarasota, Florida and Todd Betz of Decatur; a daughter, Tammy Betz of Decatur; three brothers, Carl A. "Ted" Shaw, Carl L. "Bud" Shaw, and Joseph Shaw, all of Decatur; four half-brothers, Robert, John, and Dewey Johnson, all of Decatur, and Henry "Hank" Johnson of Goshen, Indiana; a sister, Mary Kahn of Bryant; and 14 grandchildren.
A brother and a son are deceased.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Grace Bible Missionary Church, with burial in Decatur Cemetery.
Visitation is 10-11 a.m. Thursday in the church.
Preferred memorials are to the family.
