Betty Sue Masters
Mrs. Betty Sue Masters, 51, New Carlisle, died Friday (Jan. 31, 2003) at Memorial Hospital of South Bend.
Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. EST Sunday at Free Will Baptist Church, with the Rev. Kenneth L. Robbins officiating. Burial will follow in the New Carlisle Cemetery.
Visitation is from 5 to 9 p.m. EST today at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, New Carlisle, and from 1 p.m. EST until the services Sunday at the church.
She was born March 10, 1951, in Logan, W.Va., to James and Betty (Vance) Damron. On Sept. 28, 1969, she married Bill Masters, who survives.
Survivors also include three children, Billy Ray Masters, Bobby Masters and Bethann Masters, all of New Carlisle; her mother, Betty Damron of Verdunville, W.Va.; three sisters, Rhoda McAlister, Kingsford Heights, Carol Ann Willis, Peach Creek, W.Va. and Vallie Lynn Hall, Charleston, W.Va.; one brother, David Damron, Verdunville, W.Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, James C. Damron.
Mrs. Masters had been a bus driver for the New Prairie United School Corp. for 13 years. She was a member of the First Freewill Baptist Church of Rolling Prairie.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Free Will Baptist Church.
Howard Rogers
LaPORTE - Howard E. Rogers, 77, died at 12:45 p.m. Thursday (Jan. 30, 2003) at his home.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Michigan City, with Pastor Jeff Reese officiating. Burial will follow in Westville Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday, and from noon until the service Monday at the funeral chapel. The Westville Masonic Lodge 192 F&AM will conduct a Masonic Service at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral chapel.
Mr. Rogers was born Feb. 7, 1925, in LaPorte, to Myron L. and Gertrude (Keim) Rogers. On Aug. 16, 1947, in Westville, he married Donna Stewardson, who died Dec. 15, 1975. On May 1, 1982, in Edwardsburg, Mich., he married Nellie Whitledge Mitchell, who survives in Buchanan, Mich.
Survivors also include two daughters, Suzanne (David) Manthey, Michigan City, and Kristine (John) Mogle, Des Moines, Iowa; three stepsons, Bob (Kay) Mitchell, Bourbon, Ind., Don (Caroline) Mitchell, Edwardsburg, Mich., and Jim (Mary Ann) Mitchell, Niles, Mich.; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, John Stewardson, Littleton, Colo.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He also was preceded in death by one sister, Jane Stiller; and one grandson, Mike Mitchell.
Mr. Rogers retired after 45 years as a wood pattern maker, working for various shops in the area. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 192 F&AM, Westville. He also belonged to the Scottish Rite, Orak Shrine Temple and was a past member of the Orak Shrine Clown Unit. He was active in the Westville Methodist Church while residing in Westville. He became active in the Hope United Methodist Church after moving to Edwardsburg in 1982.
Memorials may be made to the LaPorte County VNA Hospice or to Hope United Methodist Church, Edwardsburg.
David Baker
David R. Baker, 54, Michigan City, died Friday (Jan. 31, 2003) at his home.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, the Rev. David Matevia officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
Visitation is scheduled for 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Carlisle Funeral Home.
Mr. Baker was born Oct. 3, 1948, in Michigan City, the son of Peter Jr. and Hermina (Bruemmer) Baker, who are deceased.
On Nov. 8, 1969, in Michigan City, he married Cheryl O'Bringer, who survives in Michigan City.
Also surviving are three sons, David (Teri) Baker and Timothy (Amy) Baker, Michigan City, and Brian (Kelly) Baker, Plymouth, Ind.; four special grandchildren, Nicholas, Alexis, Emily and Connor Baker, all of Michigan City; two brothers, Kenneth (Ruth) Baker, Michigan City and John (Jeanette) Baker, LaPorte; one sister, Nancy (Jim) Polarek, Valparaiso; and his stepfather, Norbert Pollnow, Michigan City.
Mr. Baker had worked as a purchasing agent for Tri-State Electric. He lived in Michigan City all his life.
Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
James Payne
THREE OAKS, MICH. - James Payne, 58, Three Oaks, died Saturday morning (Feb. 1, 2003) at his home.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Pobocik Funeral Home, Connelly-Noble Chapel, Three Oaks, the Rev. Raymond Babcock officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Mr. Payne was born Aug. 15, 1944, in Three Oaks Township, to Willis and Nellie (Wondergem) Payne.
Surviving are his mother, Nellie Payne, Three Oaks, his sister, Ruth Ann (Wally) Lowery, Three Oaks; two nephews, Bryce Lowery, Los Angeles; Chad (Jen Jelinek) Lowery, Three Oaks; and his cousin, Paul (Anne) Wondergem, Hope, Ind.
He was preceded in death in 1982 by his father, Willis Payne.
Mr. Payne graduated from Three Oaks High School in 1963 and began working for Nylon Products in Bridgman, Michigan. He worked for the same company for 40 years as a machinist and supervisor.
Mr. Payne loved John Deere tractors and took great pleasure from farming.

Alan Steffy
LaPORTE - Alan R. Steffy, 56, LaPorte, died at 3 p.m. Friday (Jan. 31, 2003) at the University of Chicago Hospital.
The funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Essling Funeral Home, LaPorte, with Pastor Karl Koch officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Lake Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 12:30 p.m. until the service Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Steffy was born Jan. 20, 1947, in North Judson, Ind., the son of Orrin and Jeanette (Cawby) Steffy. On Nov. 25, 1967, in LaPorte, he married Sally Schindler, who survives in LaPorte.
Also surviving are two daughters, Kimberly (Robert) Overmyer, LaPorte, and Jennifer (Paul) Brettin, Rolling Prairie; four grandsons; his father, Orrin Steffy, LaPorte; two brothers, Orrin "Butch" Steffy and Richard "Dick" Steffy, both of LaPorte; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Mr. Steffy was preceded in death by his mother, Jeanette Steffy.
Mr. Steffy had worked as a printer for the Post-Tribune in Gary for 33 years. He was a 1965 graduate of LaPorte High School, where he played baseball.
Mr. Steffy was a member of the Indiana National Guard, the American Legion, the Polish Falcons, the Printers Union and the Slicer Dugout Club.

Dorothy Rowley
LaPORTE - Dorothy H. Rowley, 97, LaPorte, died at 11:30 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 1, 2003) at LaPorte Hospital.
The funeral is at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Cutler Funeral Home, LaPorte, with the Rev. Doug Hadley officiating. Visitation is from 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. until the service Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial is in Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte.
Miss Rowley was born in LaPorte on Jan. 8, 1906, to Stephen G. and Henrietta (Himm) Rowley.
Survivors include two nephews, David George Rowley, Bristol, Ind., and Stephen George Rowley, Boston; a niece, Susan Rowley Havens, San Diego; three great-nephews and a great-niece.
She was preceded in death by a brother, George Stephen Rowley.
Miss Rowley, whose education included business training at Reese Business College, worked for Rumely Co. for seven years before starting in the mailroom at U.S. Slicing Machine Co., which later became Berkel Inc. She retired from Berkel's accounting department after 30 years with the firm.
Her real passion was bringing history alive for others, especially children. She worked at the LaPorte County Historical Museum for nearly 20 years, retiring in 1989 as assistant curator. She was appointed by Indiana's governor as LaPorte County's first historian, a post she held for 10 years. She was proud to have been the only citizen to serve on the LaPorte County Centennial Committee in 1932 and Sesquicentennial Committee in 1982, providing historical research for both.
She is remembered for providing hundreds of programs on the history of LaPorte and LaPorte County and was known as the resident expert on murderess Belle Gunnes of LaPorte. She contributed to genealogical data for anyone who asked a question and researched houses for restoration throughout LaPorte County.
Miss Rowley was a member of First United Methodist Church, LaPorte, and volunteered for the American Red Cross during World War II. She was active with the Girl Scouts of America for more than 50 years. She was a charter member of the LaPorte "Women's Chorus" and the LaPorte Business Girls. She was active in the Daughters of the American Revolution and provided research to validate memberships.
In her later years, she lived at the Extended Care Center of LaPorte Hospital, where she continued to participate in activities.
Memorial contributions should be made to the LaPorte County Historical Museum, Extended Care Center of LaPorte Hospital or First United Methodist Church, LaPorte.
Laura Wood
LaPORTE - Laura Lee Wood, 63, LaPorte, died at 6:28 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 1, 2003) at LaPorte Hospital.
The funeral is at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Essling Funeral Home, LaPorte, with the Rev. Doug Hadley officiating. Visitation is from 11 a.m. until the service Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial is in Carmel Cemetery, LaPorte.
Mrs. Wood was born Sept. 15, 1939, in South Bend to James and Evelyn Van Scoyk. Her mother survives in South Bend. On Nov. 22, 1985, she married Clarence L. Wood Jr. in LaPorte, who survives.
Other survivors include three daughters, Lynn Gans, Leesburg, Ind., Tammy Kappler, Neck City, Mo., and Jennifer Wood, LaPorte; four sons, George Susan, Hanna, Wyo., Clarence M. Wood, LaPorte, Stephen C. Wood, Cedar Lake, Ind., and John C. Wood, Warrensburg, Mo.; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Barbara Sanders, South Bend, Rita Sanders, Jasonville, Ind., and Kathy Snediker, South Bend.
She was preceded in death by a son, Robert J. Susan.
Mrs. Wood was a homemaker.
William Mansfield
WESTVILLE - William F. Mansfield, 78, Westville, died at 10:20 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 1, 2003) at his home.
The funeral is at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Root Funeral Home. Cremation will follow, with burial of the remains at a later date in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation is from 2 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2536 will conduct full military rites at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Mansfield was born Feb. 24, 1924, in Michigan City to Fred and Elsie (Phillips) Mansfield.
Survivors include three daughters: Carolyne (Frances) Rossett, Wildwood, N.J., Elsie (Christopher) Malstaff, Columbus, Ga., Dawn (Ed) Jackson, Pennsylvania; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters: Barbara (Robert) Kloss and Vella (Jack) Pointon, both of LaPorte; four brothers, Richard Mansfield and Earl (Sharon) Mansfield, LaPorte, Lester (Sue) Mansfield, Plymouth, and John (Vicki) Mansfield, Goshen. Also survived by special friend, Dorothy Koch of Westville.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Florence, Lois and Wilma Mansfield (his twin), and three brothers, Louis, Glen and Leon Mansfield.
Mr. Mansfield was a retired engineer from Ryerson Steel, Philadelphia. He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving in World War II and a life member of VFW Post 2536 in Michigan City.
Memorials may be made to the family.
Kathleen Reetz
Kathleen R. Reetz, 86, Michigan City, died at 11:25 p.m. Sunday (Feb. 2, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.
The funeral is at 11 a.m. Thursday at Carlisle Funeral Home, with the Rev. William H. Fine officiating. Burial is in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation is from 9 a.m. until the service Thursday at the funeral home.
She was born Dec. 28, 1916, in Michigan City to Martin W. and Irene M. (Harding) Jantzen. On Sept. 28, 1940, in Michigan City, she married Edwin G. Reetz, who died June 1, 1990.
Survivors include one granddaughter, Kimberly Sue Reetz Allmon; two great-grandchildren, Christopher and Brandon Allmon; one brother-in-law, John Reetz; and friends, June Applegate and Ruth Deutscher.
She was preceded in death by one son, Ronald L. Reetz; and one sister, Joy Jantzen Dirks.
A homemaker, Mrs. Reetz was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, its afternoon and evening guilds and the Mission Study Circle. She was a member of the Michigan City Women's Study Club, the Home & Garden Club, Tumbleweeds, Michigan City Senior Citizens and the Jolly 60s Senior Citizens of Chesterton.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's United Church of Christ.
Mildred Stanton
Mildred L. Stanton, 90, Michigan City, formerly of Knox, died Sunday (Feb. 2, 2003).
The funeral is at 1 p.m. Thursday at M.C. Smith Funeral Home, Knox. Burial will be there as well. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
She was born Sept. 19, 1912, in Ober, Ind. She married Henry E. "Tony" Stanton, who died in 1968.
Survivors include her daughter, Betty Corbett, Michigan City; one son, Henry "Mel" Stanton, St. Louis; one sister, Opal Yurgalis, Knox; seven grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Annie Chapman; a great granddaughter; and one great-great-grandson.
Don Cole
CHESTERTON - Don C. Cole, 81, died Monday (Feb. 3, 2003).
A Memorial service will be held at a later date. Cremation has taken place at Cremation Calvary Crematory, Portage. Arrangements were handled by White-Love Funeral Home, Chesterton. There will be no visitation.
Mr. Cole was born Sept. 21, 1921, in Chesterton, to Valentine and Loretta (Brown) Cole. He married Hazel R. Cole, who died Dec. 18, 2001.
Survivors include two sons, Kerry Cole, Indianapolis, and Kirk Cole, Chesterton; one daughter, Kim (Mark) Glassley, Westville; four grandchildren, Adrian (Mary) Cole, Indianapolis, Whitney Cole, Valparaiso, and Charlene and Nicole Glassley, both of Westville; and one brother, Lee Cole, Chesterton.
He also was preceded in death by one brother, Jack Cole.
Mr. Cole was a Navy veteran, having served during World War II. He had been an electrical engineer.
He was a member of Liberty Bible Church and a member of Calumet Masonic Lodge 379 F&AM, Chesterton.
For many years he was a Boy Scout leader and enjoyed woodworking.
Cecil Everly
Cecil D. Everly, 71, Michigan City, died at 3:33 p.m. Sunday (Feb. 2, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.
Cremation will take place and burial will be at a later date in Greenwood Cemetery.
Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. Thursday at Root Funeral Home.
Mr. Everly was born Sept. 10, 1931, in Walkerton, Ind., to Frank and Anna (Schultz) Everly. On Sept. 26, 1953, in Michigan City, he married Patricia J. Mason who died Aug. 30, 1993.
Survivors include five daughters: Penny (Frank) Schoof, Oklahoma City, Kathleen Payne and Patti Everly, both of Michigan City, Mary (Jon) Baker, Hartford, Mich., and Debbie Johnston, Mississippi; three sons: Tim Everly, Oklahoma City, Mike (Trish) Everly and Jere Everly, all of Michigan City; a foster son, Scott Kettler, Michigan City; 25 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and one brother, Ted (Peggy) Everly, Michigan City.
Preceding him in death were seven brothers, Walt, Karl, Leroy, Kenny, Eugene, Ronny and Frank Everly Jr.; and one great-granddaughter, Gabrielle Williams.
Delbert Hough Jr.
LaPORTE - Delbert Hough Jr., 73, died at 1:28 a.m. Tuesday (Feb. 4, 2003) at LaPorte Hospital.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Essling Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ted Nordquist officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Lake Cemetery where a military graveside service will be held.
Visitation is from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. until the service Friday at the funeral home.
Mr. Hough was born Oct. 8, 1929, in LaPorte, to Delbert Sr. and Mary (Povlock) Hough.
Survivors include two daughters, Jeannie L. Jarrett, LaPorte, and Patricia A. Collins, Rolling Prairie; four grandchildren; a companion, Clara Wade, LaPorte; one brother, Robert J. Hough, LaPorte; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one grandson, Travis Jarrett; and one sister, Ann Marie Flatt.
Mr. Hough was in the Army and served in Korea. He retired from the LaPorte City Water Works Department, where he worked in pipe maintenance.
He was a member of the Polish National Alliance; the Polish National Alliance Rod and Gun Club; and the Polish Roman Catholic Union. He also was a member of the Hamon Gray American Legion Post 83, and a former member of the LaPorte Moose Lodge.

Beth Kellogg
NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. - Beth A. Kellogg, 38, formerly of Michigan City, died Tuesday (Jan. 21, 2003) in Florida.
A service was held in Florida, with Baggett & Summers, Daytona Beach, handling the arrangements.
Ms. Kellogg was born Jan. 28, 1964, in Michigan City, to Mark Kellogg, who survives in Savannah, Ga., and Sandra Brown, who survives in Edgewater, Fla.
Survivors also include one son, Connor Daubner, New Smyrna Beach.
Ms. Kellogg grew up in Three Oaks, Mich., and moved to Florida 20 years ago. For the last 15 years, she was the owner/operator of Alluring Hair Designs in Daytona Beach Shores.
She was devoted to her son and the two of them shared a great love for animals. She was an avid fan of NASCAR, the Chicago Bears and the Ohio State Buckeyes and enjoyed riding motorcycles and cooking.
She drew her strength from the diversity and beauty of nature.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Connor Daubner Trust Fund, P.O. Box 9851, Daytona Beach, FL 32120.
