Mattie Lasco
Mattie Beatrice Lasco, 40, Michigan City, died Monday (Feb. 3, 2003) at her home.
Funeral services will be Saturday at the Christ Apostolic Tabernacle Church in Bossier City, La. Burial will follow in Rocky Mount Cemetery in Ringgold, La.
Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Thursday at Root Funeral Home, Michigan City.
Mrs. Lasco was born June 25, 1962, in Texarkana, Ark., to Eddie and Donna Berry. Her parents survive in Monroe, La.
Survivors also include one daughter, Samantha (Heath) Poland, Michigan City; one son, Lane Scott, Michigan City; five sisters, Billy Upchurch and Durcie Patterson, both of Florida, Suzanne Grear, Jonesboro, La., Tammy Berry, West Monroe, La., and Debbie Foy of Louisiana; and two brothers, Ernie Berry, West Monroe, La., and Eddie Berry Jr., Monroe, La.
Mrs. Lasco was a certified nursing assistant at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers in Michigan City.
Memorials may be made to the family.
Mortimer (Mort) Winski
Mortimer (Mort) Charles Winski, 87, formerly of Michigan City, died Wednesday (Jan. 26, 2003) in La Jolla, Calif.
Mr. Winski was born June 7, 1915, in Lafayette, Ind., to Louis and Rose Winski. He was married to Agatha Glick of Jackson, Mich., for 56 years before her death in 1996. He then married Edith Eger in 1999, who survives.
Survivors include his and Agatha's four children, Susan Winski, Bali, Indonesia, Debbie Winski, Los Angeles, Mark (Nancy) Winski, Carmel, Ind., and Randy (Linda) Winski, Dallas; five grandchildren, Ali DeJohn, Denver, Benjamin Winski, Seattle, Emily Eikelberner, London, Charlie Winski, Boulder, Colo., and Adam Winski, Dallas; his brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Rosemary Winski, Lakeland, Fla.; and his sister-in-law, Mrs. Nate Winski, Michigan City.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Nate and Henry, and one sister, Dorys Silver.
Mr. Winski attended Purdue University and the University of Illinois during the depression years of the 1930s and then joined his brothers, Nate, Henry and Jack, in founding Northern Indiana Steel Supply of Michigan City. He was extremely innovative when it came to machinery, creating machinery production lines, and getting a patent on a flatbed trailer to haul larger steel coils. That particular trailer, "Norwin," was written up in Fortune Magazine. The majority of Mr. Winski's career was spent in Michigan City until he retired to San Diego.
He was a natural athlete. He excelled in three-cushion billiards and was among the 10 best amateur billiard players in the U.S. He also was highly proficient in golf, bowling, tennis, ping pong and other sports.
Mr. Winski was active in community affairs until the later years of his life. He was past president of Sinai Temple, Michigan City, past president of Pottawattamie Country Club, Michigan City, and Past President of La Costa Country Club, Carlsbad, Calif. In 1961, Mort co-founded a chapter of Children's International Summer Village in Michigan City, which offers youth programs throughout 100 countries in the world and promotes international understanding.
Mort was a member of the Rotary Club. In the early 1990s Mort and Agatha set up a scholarship program for students at University of California, San Marcos branch. Each year, several students are chosen to receive financial aid.
He touched many people in his life and gave of himself in many ways. His family and friends celebrate his life and his memory.
The family requests only that donations in Mr. Winski's memory be made to Sinai Temple, 2800 S. Franklin Street Michigan City, IN 46360.
Robert (Bob) Debald
FONTANA, Calif. - Robert H. (Bob) Debald, 60, formerly of LaPorte and Parsons, Kan., died unexpectedly Wednesday (Jan. 22, 2003) at his home in California.
Private services were held at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Parsons, with the Rev. John Schaich officiating. Burial was in Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Parsons. An earlier service was held in San Bernandino, Calif.
Mr. Debald was born June 15, 1942, in LaPorte, to Robert L. and Sara J. (Paluszynski) Debald. He was baptized into the Catholic faith at an early age at St. Peter's Catholic Church in LaPorte.
Survivors include his wife, Burnetta Debald, Fontana; two sons, Sean Debald, Parsons, and Ty Debald, Andover, Kan.; his parents, Robert and Sara Debald, Parsons; two grandsons; a step-grandson; and one sister, Deborah Schwarzenberger, Wichita, Kan.
In 1960, the family moved from Indiana to Parsons, where he graduated from Parsons High School and attended the Labette Community College for two years.
He served in the U.S. Army Reserves for several years and was active in the Parsons Jaycees. He had worked for Meadow Gold Dairy, Safeway, the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant and Parsons Custom Products.
Richard Dermody
LaPORTE - Richard L. (Dick) Dermody, 80, died at 2:35 a.m. Wednesday (Feb. 5, 2003) at LaPorte Hospital.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Friday at St. Peter's Catholic Church, LaPorte, with the Rev. George M. Vrabely officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte.
Visitation is from 3 to 8 p.m. today, and from 8 to 9 a.m. Friday at Essling Funeral Home, where the Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today.
Mr. Dermody was born Nov. 13, 1922, in Hammond, to John and Sophie (Kloch) Dermody. On Sept. 13, 1950, in Calumet City, Ill., he married Jessie Mary Saddler, who survives in LaPorte.
Survivors also include two sons, Tom and Jim Dermody, both of LaPorte; five grandchildren; and one brother, John Dermody, Naples, Fla.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Patty Dermody; and one sister, Patricia Dermody.
Mr. Dermody retired from NIPSCO and Space Leasing as general manager.
He attended the University of Arizona for three years, were he was named to the university's Hall of Fame for basketball and football. He played professional basketball for the Omaha Hawks.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army as a lieutenant.
Mr. Dermody was a past president of the LaPorte Chamber of Commerce and a former board member of Holy Family Hospital. He was a member of the LaPorte Rotary Club, former board member of the YMCA, and former president of the South Bend Lion's Club.
He was a high school basketball official and a LaPorte High School Booster Club member for over 30 years. He also had refereed college basketball.
He was a former Salvation Army board member and was instrumental in the building of the Salvation Army Citadel.
Memorials may be made to St. Peter's Catholic Church or the LaPorte Salvation Army.
Edward Wezor
CHESTERTON - Edward F. Wezor, 69, Chesterton, died Tuesday (Feb. 4, 2003) at Porter Memorial Hospital, Valparaiso.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home in Chesterton, with the Rev. Edward Mitchell officiating. Burial will be in Chesterton Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
He was born March 14, 1933, in Chesterton, to Edward F. and Mary Michaline Cathlyn (Jakubowski) Wieczorkowski.
Survivors include his devoted companion of 32 years, Janet Linderman, Chesterton; one son, Edward Wezor; three daughters, Debbie, Doreen and Dorothy; two sisters, Constance (James) Sherrick and Marian Mills, Hobart, Ind.; several grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and three caring friends, Eleanor Linderman, Arthur and Ruth Roberts.
Mr. Wezor worked at U.S. Steel in the power and fuel division. He retired in 1984 after 32 years of service. Mr. Wezor was a member of Chesterton Moose Lodge 1623. He had attended St. Patrick's School and graduated from Chesterton High School in 1951.
Johanna Boehm
PORTER, Ind. - Johanna Boehm, 85, Porter, died Wednesday (Feb. 5, 2003) at The Waters of Duneland Health Care Center, Chesterton.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 10 a.m. until the service Monday at the funeral home.
She was born Sept. 21, 1917, in Porter, to Jacob C. and Ellen (Blink) Ton. On Feb. 4, 1939, in Porter, she married Raymond W. Boehm who died Jan. 28, 1995.
Survivors include one son, Walter (Deborah) Boehm, LaPorte; one daughter, Ellen R. Dickerson, Porter; one sister, Jeannette (Larry) DeKoker, Chesterton; special sister-in-law, "Frankie" (Richard) Collins, Chesterton; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Also preceding Mrs. Boehm in death were six brothers, Cornelius "Sonny", Lewis "Whitey", Walter "Ozzie", Bernard "Swede", Roland "Coonie" and Harold "Spider" Steve Ton; and four sisters, Kathryn Sieske, Nellie Marie DeLacey, Luella Betts, and Wanda Poparod.
Mrs. Boehm was a homemaker and a member of the Porter United Methodist Church. She was Sunday school superintendent for 25 years, a member of the Love Circle and also was the first president of the Porter United Methodist Women's Club.
She belonged to Daughters of America Lodge 70, Porter, and was the State of Indiana Counselor for Daughters of America in 1976 and 1984. Mrs. Boehm served for 17 years on the Porter Park Board. She was a long time member of the Porter election board and a supporter of the State Park Little League and Babe Ruth Baseball. She was the 2000 Citizen of the Year in the town of Porter. Mrs. Boehm was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs and was a passionate collector of music boxes, with more than a hundred in her collection.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Porter United Methodist Church.
Christopher Cornelison
LaPORTE - Christopher Michael Cornelison, 21, LaPorte, died at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday (Feb. 4, 2003).
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Cutler Funeral Home. Burial will be in Swan Lake Cemetery, Michigan City.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, and from 8 a.m. until the service Saturday at the funeral home.
He was born April 1, 1981, in Monterey, Calif., to Richard G. Cornelison, who survives in Hobart, Ind., and Yvonne L. Miracle, who survives in Illinois.
Survivors also include one daughter, Cierra; one brother, Richard Cornelison Jr., LaPorte; and one grandmother, Mildred Cornelison, LaPorte.
Also preceding Mr. Cornelison in death were one grandfather, Richard Cornelison; and a grandmother, Beverly Miracle.
Mr. Cornelison was a certified nurses assistant. He attended LaPorte High School. His family and friends will love, miss and cherish him. He will always be in their hearts.

Alta Koss
LaPORTE - Alta Joanette "A.J." Koss, 52, LaPorte, died at 3:10 p.m. Wednesday (Feb. 5, 2003) at her home following an illness.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Michigan City, with the Rev. Larry Henry officiating. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, New Buffalo, Mich.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, and from 9 a.m. until the funeral Saturday in the funeral chapel.
She was born Jan. 18, 1951, in New Port, Ark., to Fred and Etta (Gifford) Elliot. Her mother survives in New Buffalo.
On Oct. 25, 1988, in LaPorte, she married David Koss who survives.
Survivors also include one daughter, Jessica (Anthony) Sittig-Labayo, Oak Park, Ill.; two sons, Jeffery (Dianne) Sittig, Three Oaks, and Jay (Diane) Sittig, LaPorte; two grandsons, Jeffery Sittig, Three Oaks, and William Gardner, Stevensville, Mich.; four sisters, Verdean Gray, Swifton, Ark., Christine Hardy, Houston, and Jetta Masters and Jackie Lear, both of New Buffalo; and several nieces, nephews and godchildren.
Also preceding Mrs. Koss in death were her father; two sisters, Marie Dovoe Moore and Joyce Irene Waybright; and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Koss received a bachelor's degree in business and management from Bethel College and a master's degree in education from Purdue University-Calumet. She had a distinguished career in education and human services for two decades.
Mrs. Koss began her career with the River Valley School District as the Job Club Coordinator/Counselor and at Michiana Resources where she managed and supervised services for disabled adults. She then became the executive director of LaPorte County Family Crisis Center. After her work with human services, her career shifted to the field of education and leadership. She was Academic Dean at Sawyer College, executive director of LaPorte County Leadership and staff development coordinator with Indiana Paging Network. In 1997, she and her business partner, Stefanie Toth-Olson, established Innovative Training & Consulting to teach leadership and collaboration to organizations throughout Indiana and the nation.
Mrs. Koss served as a board member for the Indiana Leadership Association and for the League of Women Voters. She was also a former president and educational coordinator of the local chapter of Business Network International. She was affiliated with both St. Luke's and Queen of All Saints churches.
Mrs. Koss was a published author in the area of educational curriculum. She also received the state of Kentucky's highest honor, the Kentucky Colonel Commission, for her service and accomplishments.
Memorials may be made to the LaPorte County VNA Hospice Services or Michiana Resources, Michigan City.
Bernard Streeter
CLIFTON, Va. - Bernard W. Streeter, 77, Clifton, died Sunday (Jan. 26, 2003).
A memorial service was Saturday, Feb. 1, at Bethlehem Baptist Church, Fairfax, Va. A special inurnment ceremony will take place at Arlington National Cemetery on May 6, 2003.
He was born in Michigan City, on Sept. 12, 1925.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Patricia Streeter; one daughter, Patrice Tibado, Frostproof, Fla.; two sons, Winston Streeter, Goldvein, Va., and Trevor Streeter, Rochester, N.Y.; and ten grandchildren.
At the age of 18, Mr. Streeter joined the Army Air Corps, serving during World War II. His service included work as a ball turret gunner on a B-17. He flew 24 missions and received several commendations and decorations. Upon discharge, he moved back home and attended Purdue University for two years. In 1948 he purchased his first restaurant, The Home Cafe, in New Carlisle. In 1960 he became an early owner of a McDonald's franchise in Cleveland, Ohio.
After moving to McLean, Va., in 1968, Mr. Streeter opened several Arby's restaurants in the Washington, D.C. area. In 1972, he was a founder and served as an early president of the Arby's Franchise Association. He attended Bethlehem Baptist Church in Fairfax until illness made it impossible for him to do so.
Patrick Glassman
Patrick N. Glassman, 16, Michigan City, died unexpectedly at 10:30 p.m. Friday (Feb. 28, 2003) at his home.
The funeral is at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with the Rev. James McGrogan officiating. Burial is in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation is from 3 to 9 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel. A memorial service is at 7:30 tonight at the funeral chapel.
Patrick was born July 18, 1986, in Michigan City to Bill Glassman and Therese Kester.
Survivors include his father and step mother, Bill (Nora) Glassman, Black Bourton, England; his mother and step father, Therese (Matthew) Zolvinski, Michigan City; one sister, Andrea Glassman, Kalamazoo, Mich.; one half-sister, Heather Glassman, LaPorte; one half-brother, Ryan Glassman, West Lafayette, Ind.; two grandmothers, Doris Kester, Beverly Shores, and Mary "Pegge" Schoper, LaPorte; and step-grandparents, Frank and Frances Zolvinski.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Charles Kester, and great-grandmother, Catherine D'Andre.
Patrick was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and a seventh- and eighth-grade assistant boys basketball coach at Queen of All Saints School. He was a 10th-grader at Marquette High School, where he was a summa cum laude student and member of the track team. He also was involved in many student activities at the high school.
He worked part time at Valueland and at Zolvinski's Farm Market, both in Michigan City. He was a Dunebrook Nurturing Parent program volunteer and former LaPorte Hospital Student of the Month.
Patrick participated in numerous spelling bees, was a D.A.R.E. essay-award winner and received the Edward Paine Memorial Scholar of Mathematics for Marquette High School by the Michigan City Lions Club. He was presented with the Rev. Leonard J. Cross Award from Queen of All Saints School in 2001.
Memorials may be made to the Patrick N. Glassman Scholarship Fund in care of Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel.
Judith Johnson
NEW CARLISLE - Judith A. Johnson, 57, New Carlisle, died at 4:10 p.m. Saturday (April 5, 2003) at her home.
A remembrance dinner is planned for a later date. Cremation will take place. Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte, handled the arrangements.
Miss Johnson was born Jan. 2, 1946, in LaPorte, to Charley and Alene (Durham) Johnson, who preceded her in death.
Surviving are two sisters, Lynn (Augusta) Pickard, New Carlisle, and Heather Figueroa, Buchanan, Mich.; and three brothers, Charles Johnson, Elkhart, Robert Johnson, Union Pier, Mich., and Thomas Johnson, Whitney, Texas.
Miss Johnson worked for Plastic Masters of New Buffalo, Mich., for 30 years. She was a 1963 LaPorte High School graduate and a 1968 graduate of University of Corpus Christi.
Memorial contributions may be made to the New Carlisle United Methodist Church Flower Fund.
John Bankert
VALPARAISO - John R. Bankert, 85, Valparaiso, died Sunday (April 6, 2003) at Porter Memorial Hospital, Valparaiso.
A memorial service is at 7 p.m. Thursday at 1st Presbyterian Church, Valparaiso, with the Rev. Gretchen Seidler-Gibbs officiating. Cremation was at Heritage Crematory, Portage. Visitation is from 6 p.m. until the service Thursday at the church. Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, Chesterton, handled the arrangements.
He was born Oct. 12, 1917, in Pittsburgh, Penn., to Charles and Esther (Huchel) Bankert. On Nov. 6, 1943, in Munhall, Penn., he married Ruth Alice Neville, who died Oct. 28, 1993.
Survivors include two daughters, Marsha (Rich) Machiela, Holland, Mich., and Jacqueline (Rob) Rogers, Valparaiso; one sister-in-law, Betty Banker, Encinitas, Calif.; two grandchildren, Jessica and Emily Rogers, Valparaiso; three step-grandchildren, Jason, Michael (Ara) and Joel Machiela, Holland, Mich.; and a close companion, Lois Hill, Hobart, Ind.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and James Bankert.
Mr. Bankert, a World War II Army Air Corps veteran, was an area resident since 1959. He was the manager of general accounting for Midwest Steel. He was a member of 1st Presbyterian Church and former member of Chesterton Moose Lodge 1623.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
Marjorie Carringer
LaPORTE - Marjorie J. Carringer, 80, LaPorte, died at 12:15 p.m. Saturday (April 5, 2003) at LaPorte Hospital.
The funeral is at 2 p.m. Sunday at Essling Funeral Home, LaPorte, with the Rev. George M. Vrabely officiating. A private burial will be at a later date in Pine Lake Cemetery. There is no visitation.
She was born Jan. 15, 1923, in LaPorte to Charles and Louise (Hummel) Nelson. On Sept. 19, 1942, in LaPorte, she married Newell E. Carringer, who died in 1982.
Survivors include one son, Rod (Diane) Carringer, LaPorte; one grandson, Jacob Carringer, Indianapolis; one granddaughter, Anna Carringer, Indianapolis; one sister, Betty Fickel, LaPorte; four nieces, Claudia Miller, LaPorte, Sandy Andresen, Bellevue, Wash., Tammy Dukatz, Bloomfield Hills, Mich., Barbara Piper, Marion, Ind.; three nephews, Mark Fickel and Rick Nelson, both of LaPorte, and Dave Nelson, Michigan City.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Richard Nelson.
Mrs. Carringer was the owner of Carringer Dairy, and was executive assistant at Hargrave, Hargrave & Boston Insurance Co. She also was a member of Tri Kappa Sorority.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Center Township Volunteer Fire Department, 305 W. Johnson Road, LaPorte.
