Lavila Crook
Lavila E. Crook, 79, Michigan City, died at 11:40 p.m. Saturday (April 5, 2003) at Michigan City Health Care Center.
The funeral is at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Carlisle Funeral Home, with the Rev. Silas Christian of First Free Methodist Church officiating. Burial is in Swan Lake Memorial Park. Visitation is from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.
Mrs. Crook was born May 11, 1923, in Long Lake, Wis., to John F. and Adelia M. Sheperd. On Aug. 8, 1944, in Joplin, Mo., she married Howard W. Crook, who died in 1998 after more than 50 years of marriage.
Survivors include one daughter, Betty Lou (Thomas S.) Richardson, Michigan City; one son, William F. (Patricia) Crook, Melrose Park, Ill.; four grandchildren, Lavila (Stanley) Weckwerth, Midvale, Utah, Guida Rightsell, Michigan City, Deanna (John) Radich, Evansville, Ind., and Fredrick H. (Rae) Crook, Chicago; one sister, Delana R. Terry, Kendallville, Ind.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by an infant son, Larry B. Crook; two sisters, Shirly and Bessie; and four brothers, Cecil, Curtis, Albert and Edgar.
Mrs. Crook was a homemaker who loved to baby-sit children. She enjoyed writing music and poetry, as well as sewing and knitting. Friends fondly referred to her home "as the most neatly kept in the city."
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
Ronald Ellsworth
Ronald R. Ellsworth, 36, Michigan City, died at 5:15 a.m. Sunday (April 6, 2003) at Michigan City Health Care Center.
Services already were held, and there is no visitation. Cremation will take place. Carlisle Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
He was born Oct. 26, 1966, in Delta County to Wallace Ellsworth and Ruth (Raymond) Schiller, who survive.
Survivors also include one son, Christian Ellsworth, Michigan City; one daughter, Jazzmyn Ellsworth, Noblesville, Ind.; and one brother, Samuel Ellsworth, Houston.
Mr. Ellsworth was a carpenter.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Charles Henton
LaPORTE - Charles "Butch" Henton, 90, LaPorte, died at 7:25 a.m. Sunday (April 6, 2003) at Brentwood Assisted Living.
A memorial service is at 2 p.m. Thursday at Salem United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Mark Harris officiating. Visitation is from 1 p.m. until the service Thursday at the church. Cutler Funeral Home, LaPorte, handled the arrangements.
He was born Aug. 30, 1912, in Westville to Cory and Grace Henton. On June 14, 1941, in LaPorte, he married June Stubblefield, who survives in LaPorte.
Survivors also include one daughter, Cynthia Henton, LaPorte; one son, Richard Henton, Michigan City; and one sister, Nevada Henton, LaPorte.
Mr. Henton was a captain with the LaPorte City Police Department, retiring in 1965. A World War II Army veteran, he was a 65-year member of Masonic Lodge 41 F. & A.M., joining in 1937, a past LaPorte Historical Society board member and a Salem United Methodist Church member.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Salem United Methodist Church.
Leila Mae Reuer
LaPORTE - Leila Mae Reuer, 82, LaPorte, died at 12:05 p.m. Monday (April 7, 2003) at Fountainview Terrace Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
The funeral is at 11 a.m. Friday at Cutler Funeral Home, LaPorte, with the Rev. Doug Hadley officiating. Burial is in Patton Cemetery. Visitation is from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m. until the service Friday at the funeral home.
She was born April 5, 1921, in LaPorte to Ernie and Carrie (Hollett) Fraze. She first married Joseph Straub, then Wallace Reuer.
Survivors include one daughter, Sandra Burkhart, LaPorte; two sons, John Straub and Robert Reuer, both of LaPorte; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Ernest Fraze.
Mrs. Reuer retired as secretary for Bob Johnson Insurance. She was a member of LaPorte First United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women, and Eastern Star. She enjoyed camping and square dancing.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or First United Methodist Church.
Gerald Weathers Sr.
STILLWELL - Gerald "Jerry" Weathers Sr., 62, Stillwell, died at 11:20 p.m. Sunday (April 6, 2003) at his home.
The funeral is at 11 a.m. Thursday at Cutler Funeral Home, LaPorte, with the Rev. Royce Ford officiating. Burial is in Salem Chapel Cemetery. Visitation is from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. until the service Thursday at the funeral home.
He was born July 3, 1940, in Caraway, Ark., to Frank F. and Ella R. (Fuller) Weathers. On Dec. 6, 1958, in Lake City, Ark., he married Alice Stacy, who survives.
Survivors also include three daughters, Jennie Lambert, Fish Lake, Donna Wallace, Hamlet, and Selena D. Walker, LaPorte; two sons, Gerald W. Weathers Jr. and Jeffery Weathers, both of LaPorte; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Geneva Price and Bernice Ellis, both of Benton Harbor, Mich.; and one brother, Ray Weathers, Arlington, Texas.
He was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers.
Mr. Weathers worked at South Bend Stamping, then at Teter Tool & Dye in LaPorte.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Anna Belue
A memorial service for Anna Belue is at the 10:45 a.m. worship service Sunday at The Salvation Army, 1201 Franklin St., with Capt. Michael Wolfe leading the service.
Mrs. Belue, 82, Tucson, Ariz., formerly of Michigan City, died Jan. 25, 2003, in Tucson.
Survivors include her husband, Robert Belue Sr.; four sons, Robert Belue Jr., Camarillo, Calif., Robbin Belue, Niagara Falls, N.Y., Roger Belue, Orlando, Fla., and David Belue, Denver, Colo.; one daughter, Wilma Pisut, Tucson; 13 grandchildren; one brother, Mike Shipley, North Dakota; and one sister, Angeline Fries, Michigan City.
Mrs. Belue was an active member of the local Salvation Army, having joined as a child. She is well-remembered in the corps for playing her tambourine, and for her famous custard and pecan pies.
Mr. Belue will return to Michigan City for the service this weekend.
Dorene Thornton
NEW BUFFALO, Mich. - Dorene K. Thornton, 54, New Buffalo, died Monday (April 7, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.
The funeral is at 11 a.m. Friday at Carlisle Funeral Home, with the Rev. Brad Bartelmay officiating. Burial is in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
She was born June 18, 1948, in Michigan City to Ralph and Vivian (Butts) Bentley. Her mother survives. On June 26, 1976, in Quincy, Ill., she married Norman. R. Thornton, who survives in New Buffalo.
Survivors also include two sons, Brian (Gloria) Thornton and Craig (Janice) Thornton, both of Westville; one daughter, Nicole Bentley-Tucker, Wichita, Kan.; grandchildren, Jacob, Zachary, Angel, David, Jessica and Benny; one brother, Kenneth Bentley, Michigan City; and one sister-in-law, Diana (Bob) Roose, Michigan City.
Mrs. Thornton was a homemaker who, in the 1980s, was a freelance photojournalist. She enjoyed cross-stitching and a variety of hobbies.
Connie Vogel
LaPORTE - Connie Sue Vogel, 47, LaPorte, died Tuesday (April 8, 2003) at her home.
A memorial service is at 11 a.m. Saturday at the LaPorte Salvation Army, with Lt. M. Jo Langham officiating. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Cutler Funeral Home, LaPorte.
She was born Aug. 7, 1955, in LaPorte to Jerry Rogers and Ruth (Miller) Pelis, who preceded her in death. On Sept. 20, 1980, in LaPorte, she married Dick Vogel, who survives.
Survivors also include one daughter, Kayla Vogel, LaPorte; two sisters, Ellen King, West Virginia, and Linda Rogers, Florida; two brothers, Larry Rogers, Valparaiso, and Jerry Rogers, Minnesota; and an aunt, Helen Phillips, Knox.
She was preceded in death by one uncle, Pat Phillips, and one nephew, Abram Rausch.
A homemaker, Mrs. Vogel was a member of The Salvation Army, where she belonged to the Home League.

Dorothy Heninger
LaPORTE - Dorothy H. Heninger, 85, LaPorte, died at 1:45 p.m. Tuesday (April 8, 2003) at Fountainview Terrace, LaPorte.
The funeral is at 11 a.m. Saturday at Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte, with the Rev. Kent Dale officiating. Burial is in Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. until the service Saturday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Heninger was born March 12, 1918, in Dayton, Ohio, to Lewis and Helena (Weinrich) Esslinger.
Survivors include three sisters, Virginia M. Foor and Marjorie Kepcha, both of LaPorte, and Lois (Robert) Wright, Hanna; two nephews, Ronald Foor, LaPorte, and Gary (Jill) Esslinger, Mount Carroll, Ill.; five nieces, Connie (Sherman) Lute, Hanna, Kaye (Larry) Pingel, North Judson, Bobbie (Mike) Singleton, LaPorte, Judy (Bill) Zila, LaPorte, and Dewanna (Ron) DeMay, Prophetstown, Ill.; one sister-in-law, Phyllis George, Sterling, Ill.; 13 great-nieces and great-nephews; and six great-great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Melvin E. Esslinger; and nephews Tim and Lonnie Esslinger and James Foor.
Mrs. Heninger retired from General Telephone Co. in 1979 after 26 years in a clerical position.
Memorials may be made to VNA and Fountainview Nursing Home.
Edwin Johnson III
Edwin Russell "Rusty" Johnson III, 47, Michigan City, died Wednesday (April 9, 2003) at his home.
There is no service. Cremation will take place. Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Carlisle Funeral Home, Michigan City.
Mr. Johnson was born Feb. 12, 1956, in LaGrange, Ill., to Edwin Russell Johnson Jr. and Catherine Eleanor (Sanko) Johnson, who survive in Michigan City.
He also is survived by a host of cousins and friends.
Mr. Johnson was a substitute teacher and former real-estate agent.
Velma Machin
PORTAGE, Ind. - Velma Faye Machin, 67, Portage, died Monday (April 7, 2003) at Miller's Merry Manor, Warsaw, Ind.
Mrs. Machin was born Nov. 12, 1935, in Portage to Edgar and Helen (Hjelm) Gustafson.
Survivors include one daughter, Debbie (John) Yingling, Warsaw; one son, Mark Lewis, Berrien Springs, Mich.; one grandson, Christopher Yingling, Warsaw; two brothers, Carrol (Carol) Gustafson, Chesterton, and Ron (Belle) Gustafson, Jackson Township; and numerous nieces and nephews
She was preceded in death by her first husband, John Lewis, in 1978.
Mrs. Machin was a homemaker.
Linda Schroeder
LaPORTE - Linda K. Schroeder, 56, LaPorte, died at 4:25 a.m. Wednesday (April 9, 2003) at Countryside Place.
A memorial service is at 3 p.m. Sunday at Grace Baptist Church, with the Rev. John Vincent officiating. Cremation will take place, with the private burial of ashes in Rolling Prairie Cemetery. Visitation is from 1 p.m. until the service Sunday at the church. Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte, handled the arrangements.
She was born Aug. 14, 1946, in LaPorte to Clarence W. and Ruby (Schultz) Schroeder. Her mother survives in LaPorte.
Survivors also include one sister, Patricia (Les) Ames, LaPorte; one brother, Robert (Carole) Schroeder, LaPorte; one niece; five nephews and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
One great-niece preceded her in death.
Miss Schroeder was a teacher in the LaPorte Community Schools for 32 years. She graduated from Ball State University and received her master's degree from Indiana University-South Bend. She was affiliated with Grace Baptist Church.

Mary Smith
LaPORTE - Mary Grace Smith, 87, LaPorte, died at 10 p.m. Tuesday (April 8, 2003) at LaPorte Hospital.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Cutler Funeral Home, LaPorte, with the Rev. Darryl Baker officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.
Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today, and one hour before the service Saturday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Smith was born Dec. 12, 1915, in Jacksonville, Fla., to John and Katie V. (Wells) Sims. On Feb. 6, 1942, in Miami, Fla., she married Hoke V. Smith Jr., who died June 25, 1981.
Survivors include two daughters, Jonna Kate Guendling, Evanston, Ill., and Lila Elliott, Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.; and two granddaughters, Amelia Williams and Heidi Guendling.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Florence Sims, and her brother, John "Jack" Sims.
Mrs. Smith was a member of the LaPorte Presbyterian Church, where she served on the Board of Deacons and was involved in many other church activities. She established the Hoke V. Smith Scholarship Fund through the church.
She was a volunteer with Meals On Wheels and a member of the Kitchen Kin Home Demonstration Club and the LaPorte El Chapter P.E.O. She was part of the LaPorte Hospital's first Hospice Volunteer class, and she drove a LaPorte County Library Bookmobile throughout the county.
Memorials may be made to the Hoke V. Smith Scholarship Fund through the LaPorte Presbyterian Church.
Frank Shriver
LaPORTE - Frank LeRoy Shriver, 76, LaPorte, died of natural causes at 9:40 p.m. Wednesday (April 9, 2003) at his home.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 19, in Roseland Cemetery, Francesville, Ind., with full military rites. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. Cutler Funeral Home handled arrangements.
He was born May 7, 1926, in Sistersville, W.Va., to Thomas and Irene (Gifford) Shriver. On May 16, 1959, in Francesville, he married Ruby L. (Graham) Linback, who survives in LaPorte.
Survivors also include several cousins in Pennsylvania and many friends.
Mr. Shriver was preceded in death by one sister, Betty Wagner.
Mr. Shriver had worked as a production coordinator at Howmet Corp., retiring on Aug. 31, 1987. He was a World War II Navy veteran, also serving for many years in the Navy Reserves. He was a former member of the First Baptist Church in Francesville.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of St. Joseph County, the Cancer Association of Indiana or to a charity of the donor's choice.
Leavure Hudson
Leavure Ella "L.E." Hudson, 78, Michigan City, died at 9 a.m. Thursday (April 10, 2003) at her home following a lengthy illness.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Stanley Mason officiating. Burial will be in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the service Wednesday at the church.
Mrs. Hudson was born Sept. 2, 1924, in Jonesboro, Ark., to Leavure Hill and Joda Mallory.
She is survived by seven sisters, Mary (Percy) Corley and Shirley Van Dyke, Michigan City, Emma Lee Walker and Dora May Walker, Pinola, Miss., Ecola Sutton, Georgetown, Miss., Rosie Reese, Leland, Miss., and Etta Byrd, Bloomington, Ind.; four brothers, J.D., L.D., Robert Lee and Ozell Mallard, all of Georgetown, seven stepchildren; three nephews, Jerry Craft, Flint, Mich., Warren Craft, Michigan City, and Kenneth Byrd, Bloomington, Ind.; a special niece, Patrice (Rev. Michael) Payton; a special great-nephew, A'Quria Sparkman; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Hudson Sr., two brothers and one sister.
Mrs. Hudson moved to Michigan City in 1944 and retired from Coca Cola Bottling Co. in 1985. She was a member of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church.
Mary Bridgewater
WALKERTON - Mary Helen Bridgewater, 76, Walkerton, died at 5:28 p.m. Sunday (June 1, 2003) at Miller's Merry Manor, Walkerton, after an extended illness.
The funeral is at 11 a.m. Wednesday at A.M. Manuel Funeral Home, North Liberty, Ind., with the Rev. Thomas Short, of North Liberty Church of Christ, officiating. Burial is in Westlawn Cemetery, North Liberty. Visitation is after 6 tonight at the funeral home, 202 N. Main St., North Liberty.
She was born July 8, 1926, in Loogootee, Ind. On Aug. 11, 1945, in Loogootee, she married William H. Bridgewater, who died Jan. 4, 1988.
Survivors include a daughter, Evelyn Bridgewater, Crown Point; one son, John L. Bridgewater, Rolling Prairie; one sister, Pearl Snyder, Elkhart; two brothers, Walter Harris, South Bend, and Eugene Harris, North Liberty; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Bridgewater worked at Enro Shirt Co. in South Bend, retiring after 17 years of service.
