Lee Kay
Lee Anton Kay, 51, Michigan City, died at 7:07 p.m. Sunday (June 15, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.
The memorial service will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Carlisle Funeral Home, with Timothy Baines officiating. Cremation will take place. There will be no visitation.
He was born Jan. 2, 1952, in Chicago, to Leo and Marie (Eckimovich) Kay, who both preceded him in death. On Feb. 13, 2002, in LaPorte, he married Phyllis M. Latsaras, who survives.
Survivors also include two daughters, Jennifer (Scott) Pelnar, Aurora, Ill., and Kristin Kay, Oak Lawn, Ill.; one son, Lee (Tracy) Kay Jr., Oak Lawn; seven grandchildren; and one brother, Kevin (Bonnie) Kay, Oak Lawn.
Mr. Kay had been employed as groundskeeper at St. Casimir Cemetery in Chicago for eight years. He loved to work outdoors and enjoyed gardening, fishing, hiking at Mt. Baldy and watching the sunset.
Irma Ott
LONG BEACH, Ind. - Irma G. Ott, 88, Long Beach, died at 7:35 a.m. Wednesday (June 18, 2003) at Miller's Merry Manor Nursing Home, New Carlisle.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 10 a.m. Saturday at Notre Dame Catholic Church, with the Rev. Richard Ameling officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery, Michigan City.
Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today, and from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Michigan City. The Rosary will be said at 4:30 p.m. today at the funeral chapel.
Mrs. Ott was born March 9, 1915, in Stillwell, to Andrew and Rose (Parrog) Szilagyi. On Sept. 8, 1951, in Michigan City, she married Paul J. Ott, who died Sept. 30, 1981.
Survivors include one daughter, Rose-Anne (Dean) Uminski, Long Beach; three grandsons, Anthony, Michael and Paul Uminski, all of Long Beach; one sister, Julia Freeland, LaPorte; and three brothers, Elmer Szilagyi, Stillwell, Lawrence Szilagyi, New Carlisle, and Louis Szilagyi, Mill Creek.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Smith; and one brother, Andrew Szilagyi.
Mrs. Ott was a homemaker and a charter member of Notre Dame Catholic Church, Long Beach, and a member of the VFW Women's Auxiliary 1130 of LaPorte.
Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.
Henry Mierlak
LaPORTE - Henry R. Mierlak, 80, LaPorte, died Saturday (June 7, 2003) at Porter Memorial Hospital, Valparaiso.
A private family service was held and cremation has taken place.
Mr. Mierlak was born Feb. 28, 1923, in Chicago, to Stanislaus and Joan (Bieda) Mierlak. On Jan. 22, 1942, in Chicago, he married Lillian Rowan, who survives in LaPorte.
Survivors also include one son, Henry J. Mierlak, Buchanan, Mich.; three grandchildren, Wendy Mierlak, Granger, Ind., Jill (Mike) Torrey, Mattawan, Mich., and Eric Mierlak, Kalamazoo, Mich.; one great-granddaughter, Alexandra Mierlak; one sister, Elizabeth "Bette" Cavallo, San Diego, Calif.; one niece, Johanna (Leonard) Srednick, Bolingbrook, Ill.; and two nephews, John Mierlak, Bolingbrook, and John Cavallo, San Diego.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Stanley, John and Ted Mierlak.
Mr. Mierlak had worked at Pullman Standard in Michigan City making railroad boxcars and then worked at and retired from Allis-Chalmers.
He moved from Chicago in 1956, finally settling in LaPorte in 1957. He wanted to get away from city life to grow things, raise animals and just "farm." He played both the accordion and organ very well and played for family events.
Cutler Funeral Home, LaPorte handled the arrangements.
Richard Wingard
Richard D. Wingard Jr., 48, Michigan City, died at 1:55 p.m. Friday (June 13, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.
There will be no visitation. Cremation will take place and the ashes will be interred privately in Greenwood Cemetery.
Mr. Wingard was born June 5, 1955, in Michigan City, to Richard D. Wingard Sr. and Donna Mae Rowlands.
Survivors include his mother in Michigan City; two daughters, Jennifer and Sue Wingard, both of Michigan City; four sons, Justin Wingard, Michigan City, Shane, Mark and Mike Wingard, New Buffalo; two sisters, Tammy Woolum and Tina Lewis, both of Michigan City; six brothers, Kent Lewis, Pa., Kevin Lewis, Keith Lewis, Danny Wingard, Craig Wingard and Roger Wingard, all of Michigan City; and longtime companion, Diane Clemons, Michigan City.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Mr. Wingard worked at the Marquette Mall Floor Maintenance Dept. He was a member of The Salvation Army Church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Richard D. Wingard Jr. family.
Janell Stokes
CHESTERTON - Janell Stokes, 74, Chesterton, died Friday evening (June 13, 2003) at Porter Memorial Hospital, Valparaiso.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church, 434 S. Second St., Chesterton, with the Rev. Phil Burke officiating. Burial will be in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens, Michigan City.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at White-Love Funeral Home, Chesterton.
She was born Sept. 22, 1928, in Kentucky, to Eb and Myrtle (Shelby) Lovell. In 1976, in LaPorte, she married James Stokes, who survives in Chesterton.
Survivors also include one daughter, Gay (Allen) Horvath, New Carlisle; one granddaughter, Janet Horvath; and one sister, Janrose Tober, Sun City, Ariz.
Also preceding Mrs. Stokes in death was her first husband, Clarence Thode, in 1969.
Mrs. Stokes was a homemaker and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Chesterton and of the Dorcus Circle of the church. She was a member of the National Republican Club. Mrs. Stokes was an avid reader and enjoyed sewing.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Chesterton.
Doris Burden
LaPORTE - Doris V. Burden, 90, LaPorte, died at 9:57 a.m. Saturday (June 14, 2003) at LaPorte Hospital.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte, with the Rev. Paul Anderson officiating. Burial will follow in Salem Cemetery, LaPorte.
Visitation is from noon until the service Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Burden was born March 21, 1913, in Cannon Falls, Minn., to Frederick A. and Ester E. (Moline) Soderquist. On Nov. 11, 1931, in Rochester, Minn., she married Charles O. Burden who died Nov. 7, 1957.
Survivors include one son, John F. Burden, LaPorte; two daughters, Carol J. Gardner, Prescott, Ariz., and Barbara J. Landis, LaPorte; two stepsons, Earl Burden, Prescott, and Robert Burden, Townson, Wis.; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Donald J. Soderquist, Sibley, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by four sisters and four brothers.
She had lived most of her life in the LaPorte area.
Mrs. Burden retired from Plimpton Press. She also worked at the Woolen Mills and at the Ruth Sabin Home.
She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church.
Memorials may be made to the Fountainview Terrace Nursing Home.
Johnnie Byrd
Johnnie Frances Byrd, 72, Michigan City, died Saturday (June 14, 2003) at her home.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Eddie L. Jenkins officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the church. Coleman-Williams & Hicks Funeral Home handled arrangements.
She was born Sept. 18, 1930, in Michigan City, to Willie Handy and Nellie (Calloway) Goodwin. In 1957, in Michigan City, she married Herbert Byrd, who survives in Michigan City.
Survivors also include four sons, John D. (Mary) Goodwin, Chicago, Tony (Mary) Byrd, Brian Byrd and Harlan Byrd, all of Michigan City; three daughters, Vanessa (Robert) Paul, Sheron (Steve) Patrick and Glenda (Ellis) Thomas, all of Michigan City; one brother, Roy (Shirley) Goodwin, Detroit; one sister, Gloria (Eugene) Wright, Michigan City; 21 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; special friends, Jerri Thomas and Mattie Ashley, both of Michigan City; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Mrs. Byrd was preceded in death by one son, Gregory Goodwin; one brother; four sisters; and three great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Byrd was a homemaker and a member of New Hope MBC, serving on the Nurse's Guild.
Felix Flitter
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Felix R. Flitter, 90, South Bend, died at 12:20 a.m. Sunday (June 15, 2003) at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, South Bend.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, LaPorte, with the Rev. Ted Nordquist officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Wanatah.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Friday at Essling Funeral Home, LaPorte. A wake service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
He was born July 27, 1912, in Wanatah, to Felix and Pauline (Gruse) Flitter Sr. On Feb. 7, 1934, in Wanatah, he married Dorothy K. Gourley, who died Feb. 9, 1989.
Survivors include one daughter, Sheila Flitter, South Bend; several nieces and nephews; and dear friend Merna Peterson, Union Mills.
Also preceding Mr. Flitter in death were eight sisters, Anna and Mary Flitter, Helen Bryarly, Martha Moeschl, Alice Wolfe, Frances Sillery, Gertrude Hoover and Agnes Wothke; and five brothers, Frank, Leo, George, Joseph and Henry "Bill" Flitter.
Mr. Flitter was a self-employed farmer. He was formerly employed by Kingsbury Ordnance Plant and worked in the Steel Industry. Mr. Flitter was a member of Knights of Columbus St. Michael's Council 1542. He was a former member of Union Mills Lions Club and the LaPorte County Farm Bureau.

Hazel Lubs
LaPORTE - Hazel J. Lubs, 85, LaPorte, died Friday (June 13, 2003) at Medical Center of Plano in Plano, Texas.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Bethany Lutheran Church, LaPorte, with the Rev. Dennis Meyer officiating. Burial will follow at Carmel Cemetery, LaPorte.
Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte, and from 9 a.m. until the service Wednesday at the church.
Mrs. Lubs was born Jan. 16, 1918, in LaPorte, to Oscar and Hannah (Silja) Miller. On Sept. 24, 1937, in LaPorte, she married Jerry E. Lubs, who died Oct. 10, 1994.
Survivors include two sons, the Rev. Fred Lubs, San Diego, Calif., and Jerry E. Lubs II, Plano, Texas; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Lillian Gondeck, LaPorte.
She was preceded in death by one sister.
Mrs. Lubs was a graduate of LaPorte High School and a housewife.
Mrs. Lubs was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, the Elsie W. Circle of the Church, Rebeccah Circle Bible Study group, and the Altar Guild.
Maurice Maxfield
Maurice K. Maxfield, 87, Michigan City, died at 8:45 a.m. Sunday (June 15, 2003) at his home.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Carlisle Funeral Home, with the Rev. Robert J. Center officiating. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Kansas City, Kan.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the service Wednesday at the funeral home.
He was born July 10, 1915, in Fair Play, Mo., to Albert and Vinnie Ellen (Rice) Maxfield. On May 13, 1949, in Kansas City, he married Sophie E. Whitaker, who survives in Michigan City.
Survivors also include two daughters, Suzanne (John Jr.) LaRocco, Michigan City, and Sandra (Brian) Butterworth, Duluth, Minn.; four grandchildren, Jennifer and Lindsay LaRocco and Charlie and Bob Butterworth; and two brothers, Dr. Albert Maxfield, St. Joseph, Mo., and James Maxfield, Denver.
Two sisters and one brother also preceded Mr. Maxfield in death.
Mr. Maxfield had been a reality specialist with the U.S. Government. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Mountain Home, Ark. Mr. Maxfield was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Kansas City, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and was a former member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Kansas City. Mr. Maxfield also played on the farm team of the Cleveland Indians before being drafted into the army.

Russell Brewer
WESTVILLE - Russell Brewer, 84, Westville, died Thursday (June 12, 2003) at Porter Memorial Hospital, Valparaiso.
A graveside service will be Saturday at Westville Cemetery. Newhard Funeral Home, Westville, is handling arrangements.
He was born May 13, 1919, to Walter and Hulda (Swalbe) Brewer.
Several cousins survive him.
Mr. Brewer was a member of the Westville American Legion Post 21 and was a World War II veteran in the U.S. Coast Guard.
R. Ray Callaway
NORTH SALEM, Ind. - R. Ray Callaway, 68, North Salem, formerly of Michigan City, died Monday (June 16, 2003) at Windsor Manor Nursing Home, Indianapolis.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Porter Funeral Home, North Salem, with Scott Tyring officiating. Burial will be at K of P Cemetery, Oaklandon, Ind.
Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
He was born April 21, 1935, in Crawfordsville, Ind., to Russell and Gladys (Cory) Callaway.
Survivors include one daughter, Cynthia Sue Callaway, Texas; and two sons, Michael Ray Callaway, Illinois, and Dr. Stephen Kent Callaway, Evansville, Ind.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Helen Faye Callaway.
Mr. Callaway had been a biology teacher and junior high principal from 1958 to 1971 in Michigan City. From 1983 to 1993, he was a farmer in North Salem.
He was a 1953 graduate of North Salem High School and received his bachelor's degree from Purdue University in 1958. He then graduated from Ball State University with a doctorate degree in 1966.
He was a member of North Salem United Methodist Church, Lions Club, Kiwanis Club, Indiana State Teachers Association, Indiana and National Pavement Association, Indiana Road Contractors, National Teachers Association, the Fraternal Order of Police, Elks Club, American Legion in Westville, Ind., and the Indiana School Principals Association.
Gloria Cleaton
BEVERLY SHORES - Gloria H. Cleaton, 77, Beverly Shores, died at 5:52 p.m. Monday (June 16, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Eugene Kohlbecker officiating. Cremation will follow.
Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Carlisle Funeral Home.
She was born Dec. 16, 1925, in Niles, Ohio, to Rutherford and Leona (Clapper) Hughes. On Jan. 17, 1948, in Niles, Ohio, she married Richard J. Cleaton who survives in Beverly Shores.
Survivors also include one daughter, Cynthia (James) Gray, Gastonia, N.C.; one son James Cleaton, Michigan City; and four grandchildren; Gregory and Thomas Sutton, and Stephanie and Jonathan Cleaton.
One sister, Edith Silvis, preceded her in death.
Mrs. Cleaton was a registered nurse and director of nursing services for 12 years at Memorial Hospital in Michigan City. A member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Mrs. Cleaton served with the Women of Trinity and volunteered in the church thrift shop. She was a member of the Dunes Women's Club and enjoyed doing needlework.
Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church or to the American Heart Association.
Paul Racop
KNOX, Ind. - Paul E. Racop, 62, Knox, died at 4:30 p.m. Monday (June 16, 2003) at his home.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Carlisle Funeral Home and at 10 a.m. Saturday at Allison Prairie Church, Lawrenceville, Ill., with Pastor Everette Shattuck officiating. Burial will be in Centerville Cemetery, Lawrenceville.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Carlisle Funeral Home.
He was born Nov. 24, 1940, in Vincennes, Ind., to F.S. and Marie (Royer) Racop. On Aug. 18, 1963, in Fulks Run, Va., he married Shirley M. Fisher, who died in 1994.
Survivors include two daughters, Carmen (Al) Nigro, Lake Zurich, Ill., and Jana (Keith) Kuric, Hanna, Ind.; eight grandchildren; three sisters, Loretta Shirky, Farmington, Pa., Miriam (David) Fisher, Fort Jones, Calif., and Mary (Calvin) Perry, Houston; and two brothers, Bernard (Marilyn) Racop, Vincennes, Ind., and John Racop, Logansport, Ind.
Mr. Racop had been employed at the Westville Correctional Center for 40 years. He was an active member of Michigan City Church of the Brethren. Mr. Racop received the Sagamore of the Wabash award from Gov. Frank O'Bannon this past May. He received a master's degree from Indiana State University, and a bachelor's degree from Manchester College.
Mr. Racop farmed 350 acres in Knox. He loved to go to auctions and to his family and class reunions. His eight grandchildren were blessings and brought him great joy.
