Frank Ekovich
Frank M. Ekovich, 83, Michigan City, died at 5 a.m. Tuesday (June 24, 2003) at his residence.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, LaPorte, with the Rev. Ted Nordquist officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, LaPorte.
Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday, and from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at Essling Funeral Home, LaPorte. A wake service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Mr. Ekovich was born Sept. 28, 1919, in North Chicago, Ill., to Anton and Catherine (Yuratovac) Ekovich. On Nov. 12, 1960, in LaPorte, he married Mary T. Glusti Gavin, who survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Carroll (Larry) Hopp, Noblesville, Ind., Kathleen (Steven) Bugg, Evansville, Ind., Frances Ekovich, LaPorte; a son, Anton Ekovich, Michigan City; five grandchildren; a sister, Catherine Malovsic, North Chicago; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A brother, Joseph Ekovich, preceded him in death.
Mr. Ekovich was a farmer. He was a member of St. Michael Council 1542 Knights of Columbus.
Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church, or to the St. Joseph Godparent Program.
Albert Klann
THREE OAKS, Mich. - Albert E. Klann, 91, Three Oaks, died Monday (June 23, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers, Michigan City.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. EDT Friday at Pobocik Funeral Home, Three Oaks, with the Rev. Winston Decker of Woodland Shores Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Three Oaks.
Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. EDT Thursday at the funeral home.
Mr. Klann was born Sept. 7, 1911, to Edward and Caroline (Peters) Klann, in St. Joseph, Mich. On May 22, 1937, in Michigan City, he married Florance Shepherd, who died Aug. 22, 1998.
Survivors include his son, Albert R. (Charlotte) Klann, Three Oaks; three grandchildren, Albert Ray Klann, Gracie Harper and Dennis Klann; three great-grandchildren, Dennis, Brandon and Derek; one sister, Alice Pfauth, Denver, Colo.; and one brother, Henry Klann, Niles, Mich.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Larraine; one son, Loren; three sisters, Agnes, Esther and Gladys; and three brothers, Harold, Herb and Edward.
Mr. Klann was employed at Bendix Corp. in South Bend before his retirement in 1976.
He enjoyed gardening and perch fishing. Mr. Klann was a fan of baseball, especially of the White Sox, Cubs and Tigers, but would watch any team playing on television. He was also an avid bowler.
James Richardson
FRANCESVILLE, Ind. - James T. Richardson, 89, Francesville, died at 2:10 a.m. Monday (June 23, 2003) at Parkview Haven Retirement Home, Francesville.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Querry-Ulbricht Funeral Home, with the Rev. James Ketchen officiating. Burial will be in the Roseland Cemetery in Francesville.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Masonic Services will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Mr. Richardson was born Nov. 1, 1913, in Tazewell, Tenn., to Alvin and Pearlie Mae (Tolbert) Richardson. On Nov. 30, 1935, in Tazwell, Tenn., he married Ina Lee Mullins, who survives.
Survivors also include three sons, Fred A. (Renee) Richardson, Montpelier, Ind., Glenn D. Richardson, Michigan City, and Larry Richardson, Tazwell, Tenn.; four daughters, Loretta Nowak, Royal Center, Ind., Bonnie (Jimmy) James, Michigan City, Stella (Tom) Craig, Indianapolis, and Sue (William) Abegglen, Keokuk, Iowa; 15 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; two brothers, Porter Richardson, Naples, Fla., and Harvey (Blanch) Richardson, Mulberry, Ind.; two sisters, Mary (Clyde) Chumley, Belview, Ohio, and Katherine Morrison, Naples, Fla.
He was preceded in death by one son, two grandchildren, two brothers and one sister.
Mr. Richardson was a farmer and worked several years at U.S. Steel in Gary.
He was a member of First Christian Church of Francesville, Supreme Lodge 765 F&AM and South Bend Scottish Rite.
Memorials may be made to Francesville Christian Church or the American Lung Association.
Floyd Shreve Jr.
Floyd "John" Shreve Jr., 80, New Buffalo, Mich., died at 1:30 a.m. EDT Tuesday (June 24, 2003) at his home.
There will be no services. Kerley & Starks-Smith Funeral Home handled arrangements.
Mr. Shreve was born May 30, 1923, in New Buffalo, to Floyd Shreve Sr. and Ruth (Kern) Shreve. On March 11, 1945, in New Buffalo, he married Drucilla Yelton, who survives in New Buffalo.
Survivors include one son, James (Vicky) Shreve, New Buffalo; one daughter, Sharyn (Donald) McGreehan, Chase, Mich.; five grandchildren, Timothy Rogers, Matthew and Joshua Kay, and Jenifer and Jacob Shreve; two great-grandchildren, Zoey and Joshua Kay Jr.; one brother, James (Barbara) Wiedenhoft, Michigan City; and one sister, Lillian R. (Robert) Kerns, New Buffalo.
Mr. Shreve was a truck driver for Brown Transport for more than 30 years.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in Battery C. 233rd Coast Artillery Seachlight Battalion, Anti-aircraft.
Mr. Shreve enjoyed building and flying radio controlled airplanes. He was an avid sport fisherman as well.
Norman Anderson
SEBRING, Fla. - Norman L. "Bud" Anderson, 78, Sebring, formerly of LaPorte, died Sunday (June 22, 2003).
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at Sebring Christian Church with the Rev. Tod Schwingel officiating.
An additional service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Agape Christian Church, 1601 "I" St., LaPorte, with Rodney Nielsen officiating. Burial will be at Sauktown Cemetery in Mill Creek.
Arrangements are being handled by Stephenson-Nelson Funeral Home in Sebring.
Mr. Anderson was born Nov. 13, 1924, in LaPorte to Philip Lysle and Lillian Lorain (Cavinder) Anderson. He had been a resident of Sebring since 1990, after moving from LaPorte.
Surviving is his wife, Ada Anderson, Sebring; four daughters, Sandra Lantz of Bloomington, Ill., Diana Ronhovde of Jacksonville, Fla., Karen Schoff of LaPorte, and Debra Rumbaugh of Middleburg Heights, Ohio; two brothers, Robert Anderson of Sebring, and William Anderson of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Charlotte Raines of Sarasota, Fla., and Jeanette Bradburn of Sarasota,; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Anderson was preceded in death by his son, Norman L. Anderson Jr., grandson Timothy Brown and sister Irene Zook.
He was a plumber in the construction industry and served in the U.S. Navy in World War II. He was a member and elder at Sebring Christian Church and former elder of Agape Christian Church in LaPorte, Maple City Christian Church in LaPorte and Sauktown Church of Christ in Mill Creek. He was a member of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union.

Elizabeth Avery
LaPORTE - Elizabeth Catherine "Betty" Avery, 71, LaPorte, died at 1 a.m. Wednesday (June 25, 2003) at her home.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Essling Funeral Home, 1117 Indiana Ave., LaPorte, with the Rev. George Vrabley officiating. There will be no visitation.
Mrs. Avery was born July 15, 1931, in Michigan City to James and Mary (Sommers) Dwyer. Her parents preceded her in death. On June 21, 1952, in LaPorte, she married James Avery, who survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Michael Avery of Canton, Ohio, Patrick Avery of Indianapolis, and Richard Avery of Spartanburg, N.C.; a daughter, Kathleen Hommer of LaPorte; 10 grandchildren; five nieces; and three nephews.
Mrs. Avery was a wife and mother. She was a volunteer at Crichfield Elementary School in LaPorte and a former member of Friends of the Library.

Delphia Cunningham
PORTAGE, Ind. - Delphia D. "Pee Wee" Cunningham, 58, Portage, died Tuesday (June 24, 2003).
The funeral will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel, 5341 Central Ave., Portage, with the Rev. Darrel Schultz officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
She is survived by her husband, Chuck R. Cunningham, Portage; one son, Frank Cunningham, South Haven; two sisters, Shirley (Harvey) Britton, LaPorte, and Phyllis (Russell) Cork, of Texas; one brother, Ronnie (Debbie) Teague; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Teague, and one son, Charles Ray Cunningham Jr.
Mrs. Cunningham was a longtime resident of Portage. She was a very loving wife and mother and a very unselfish and giving person.
William Schmitt
William F. Schmitt, 92, Michigan City, died Monday (June 23, 2003) at LaPorte Hospital.
The service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Carlisle Funeral Home, Michigan City, with Timothy Baines of Countryside Christian Church officiating.
Visitation is from 10:30 a.m. until the service Friday at the funeral home.
Mr. Schmitt was born June 18, 1911, in Urbana, Ill., to William and Jessie (Ingalls) Schmitt. In 1933 in Michigan City he married Phyllis Lainson, who preceded him in death.
Survivors include one daughter, Elaine Zachery, Albuquerque, N.M.; one son, Eugene (Susan) Schmitt, Lockport, Ill.; two grandchildren, Lorrie (Tom Ritchie) Schmitt, Wolcottville, Ind., and Cynthia (John) Gibson, Chicago; one great-granddaughter, Shayna Ritchie, Wolcottville; one sister, Elizabeth Gerkin, Evansville, Ind., and one brother-in-law, Victor Dahlby, Evansville.
Mr. Schmitt had worked at the Hays Corp. from 1955 until he retired. He was a former member of the Moose Lodge 935.
Memorials may be made to the Humane Society of Michigan City.
Lillian Story
BURR RIDGE, Ill. - Lillian Jean Story, 86, Burr Ridge, Ill., formerly of Long Beach, died Tuesday (June 24, 2003) at King Bruwaert Home in Burr Ridge.
The funeral will be Saturday in Sigourney, Iowa. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Sigourney. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at Carlisle Funeral Home in Michigan City.
Mrs. Story was born June 14, 1917, in Sigourney to Harrison and Rose (Mohme) Shaver. In 1944, she married Herbert R. Story, who preceded her in death.
Surviving is a son, Thomas (Mimi) Story, Hinsdale, Ill.; one grandson, David Story, Hinsdale; and good friends Christian Kostrau and Magda Butcher.
Mrs. Story had been an administrative assistant at General Motors Corp. and assistant to the plant manager of the NIPSCO Generating Station in Michigan City.
Mrs. Story moved to Long Beach with her husband in 1956. She was a trained concert violinist and played with the Michigan City Symphony. She attended Sigourney High and graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in music.
Memorials may be made to the West Side Senior Center of Michigan City or the Sigourney Historical Society.
Beverly Wallen
KINGSFORD HEIGHTS - Beverly J. Wallen, 62, Kingsford Heights, died at 1:41 a.m. Wednesday (June 25, 2003) at LaPorte Hospital.
The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Haverstock Funeral, 602 Maple St., LaPorte., with the Rev. Ray Babcock officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Cemetery in North Liberty, Ind.
Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, and from 9 a.m. until the service Friday.
Mrs. Wallen was born April 24, 1941, in Marion, Ind., to William F. and Meda (Wallers) White.
Surviving are two daughters, Lois Cantrell, Beverly, Ohio, and Bettye Lange, Three Oaks, Mich.; two sons, Chris (Marti) Wallen, Kingsford Heights and William (Peggy) Wallen, South Bend; four sisters, Thelma Blake, LaPorte, Helen Danials, Indianapolis, Maxine Maynard and Mary Piotrowicz, Fish Lake; one brother, Larry White, Fort Wayne, Ind.; two granddaughters, four grandsons and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding Mrs. Wallen in death were three brothers, Gene Gulley, Bob White and John White.
Memorial may be made to Three Oaks Free Methodist Church, 12 E. Michigan St., Three Oaks, MI 49128, or to the charity of the donor's choice.
Ronald Whitney
MUSKOGEE, Okla. - Ronald W. "Ron" Whitney, 49, Muskogee, formerly of Michigan City, died Monday (June 23, 2003) in Muskogee.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. today at the Bradley Belltower Chapel in Muskogee, with the Rev. Don Jaquez officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery in Muskogee.
Bradley Family Funeral Service in Muskogee is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Whitney was born May 5, 1954, in Michigan City to George and Janet (Passage) Whitney.
Surviving are two sons, Aaron Whitney, Muskogee and Troy Whitney, Okay, Okla.; a daughter, Jennifer Whitney, Muskogee; a brother, Lawrence Edward Proctor, Austin, Texas; and two sisters, Paula Moyer, California and Marcia "Tammy" West, Norman, Okla.
Mr. Whitney worked for the city of Muskogee starting in 1992 as a chemist in the Pollution Control Plant. In 2001, he received the Wastewater Lab Award for outstanding performance from the State of Oklahoma Water & Pollution Control Association. He retired in 2003 due to health problems.
Mr. Whitney was a graduate of Lake Central High School in St. John, Ind. He enjoyed fishing and bowling and was a member of New Life Church.
Clara Zdyb
KNOX, Ind. - Clara Zdyb, 91, Knox, formerly of Michigan City, died at 5:01 a.m. Wednesday (June 25, 2003) at Wintersong Health Center in Knox.
A mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Michigan City, with Rev. Walter Ciesla officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Friday at Root Funeral Home.
Mrs. Zdyb was born July 28, 1911, in Michigan City, to Victor and Mary (Kaszynski) Sobecki. On Nov. 20, 1941, in Columbus, Ga., she married John Zdyb, who died Oct. 15, 1980.
Surviving are two daughters, Ruby Degnan, Hobart, and Pearl Kreischer, Grovertown, Ind.; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and a sister, Virginia Januchowski of Michigan City.
Five sisters and five brothers preceded her in death.
Mrs. Zdyb worked for Interstate Chrome and Smith Brothers in Michigan City. She was a member of St. Stanislaus Church.
Herman Arthur
LaPORTE - Herman L. Arthur, 65, LaPorte, died at 3:52 p.m. Wednesday (June 25, 2003) at LaPorte Hospital.
The funeral is at 11 a.m. Saturday at Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte, with the Rev. Jeff Jones officiating. Burial is in Salem Cemetery, LaPorte.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today, and 8 a.m. until the service Saturday at the funeral home.
Mr. Arthur was born June 9, 1938, in Alexander, Ill., to Osber and Lola (Denney) Arthur. On Jan. 9, 1960, in LaPorte, he married Carol Sue Green, who died Feb. 8, 1985.
Survivors include two daughters, Deb Millington, LaPorte, and Pam Potter, Rockville, Ind.; three sons, Tom, Daniel and Bud Arthur, all of LaPorte; two sisters, Lorene Courtney, Jacksonville, Ill., and Emogene Koehn, LaPorte; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Kevin.
Mr. Arthur, who lived all his life in the LaPorte area, was a molder at Maple City Casting, retiring in 1980 after 25 years.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family of Herman Arthur or the charity of the donor's choice.
Elizabeth Dolezal
SOUTH BEND - Elizabeth Louise Dolezal, 82, South Bend, died Friday (June 20, 2003) in South Bend.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Wednesday at Holy Cross Catholic Church, South Bend. Burial followed at Highland Cemetery, South Bend. Kaniewski Funeral Home, South Bend, handled the arrangements.
Mrs. Dolezal was born April 5, 1921, in Hammond, Ind., to Charles E. and Olive Vivian (Mitchell) Kitchen. On March 10, 1945, in Michigan City, she married Bernard J. Dolezal, who survives.
Survivors include 11 of her 12 children, Katheryn Lynn (James) Jennings, South Bend, Joanne Therese Dolezal, Barbara Jean (Michael) Buening, Seattle, Gerald "Gary" Allen Dolezal, Gregory Joseph (Linda) Dolezal, Mishawaka, Ind., Brian Bernard (Bernadette) Dolezal, South Bend, Bernard Joseph Dolezal Jr., John Michael (Jenny) Dolezal, Goshen, Ind., Ann Marie (Edward) Cookman, Portland, Ore., Dennis Matthew (Marty) Dolezal, Seattle, and Mary Elizabeth "Beth" (Joseph) Dube, Seattle; 26 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Doris, of Alexandria, Va.
She was preceded in death by one son, James Patrick Dolezal; and one sister, Hazel.
Mrs. Dolezal was a graduate of Purdue University, where she was a member of the school's Synchronized Swim Team. During World War II she worked in a chemistry lab for the NCR in Dayton, Ohio. She also worked at a lab in Indianapolis for the Office of Navel Ordnance. She studied clothing and design and for a time worked for Block Brothers Department Store in Indianapolis.
Her legacy is how well she loved others, how she taught her children to love and their responsibility to continue to share that love.
Memorials may be made to the Holy Cross Grade School, St. Joseph High School or to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center.
David Long
David Lee Long, 46, Michigan City, died Wednesday (June 25, 2003) at his home.
There will be no services. Carlisle Funeral Home, Michigan City, assisted the family.
Mr. Long was born April 21, 1957, in Michigan City, to James and Sybil (Kelley) Long.
Survivors include one brother, James Long, Michigan City; one sister, Joyce (Joe) Norman, Westville; and special friend Sue Howard, Michigan City.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.
