C.E. Melson
MILL CREEK - C.E. "Pete" Melson, 57, Mill Creek, died at noon Wednesday (June 25, 2003) at LaPorte Hospital.
The funeral is at 11 a.m. Monday at Shackelford Funeral Home, Savannah, Tenn., with burial in Mount Herman Cemetery, Savannah. Visitation is from 4 to 9 p.m. today at Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte, which is handling the local arrangements.
Mr. Melson was born June 19, 1946, in Savannah, to Leamon and Martha Kathleen (Cagle) Melson.
Survivors include two sons, Brian Melson, Lansing, Mich., and Todd (Rebecca) Melson, South Bend; one sister, Barbra (John) Bailey, Portage; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Chester and Robert Melson.
Mr. Melson was a project engineer with Conrail Railroad, retiring in 2000 after 34 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Korea.

Charles Wray
JONESBORO, Ark. - Charles Culbertson Wray, 76, Jonesboro, formerly of Michigan City, died Wednesday (June 25, 2003) at his home.
All services will be private. Emerson Funeral Home, Jonesboro, handled the arrangements.
Survivors include two sons, Charles C. Wray Jr., Jonesboro, and James T. Wray, Michigan City; two daughters, Nancy A. Divine, and Dr. Mary I. Wray, Longmont, Colo.; one brother, James E. Wray, Walnut Creek, Calif.; two sisters, Barbara Maule, Michigan City, and Eilene Wells, Prescott, Ariz.; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marianne.
Mr. Wray was a member of the Army Air Corps, a graduate of Purdue University and a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Michigan City.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 535 W. Edison, Unit 6, Mishawaka, IN 46545.
Durmon Butler Jr.
Durmon Z. Butler Jr., 57, Michigan City, died at 5:30 p.m. Thursday (June 26, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.
The funeral is at noon Wednesday at Greater Powerhouse Church of God in Christ, with burial in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens. Visitation is from 10 a.m. until the service Wednesday at the church. Coleman-Williams & Hicks Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
He was born Aug. 13, 1945, in Caruthersville, Mo., to the Rev. Durmon Z. Sr. and Lula P. (Mack) Butler. His mother survives in Michigan City. In March 1998 in Michigan City, he married Penny Smith, who survives in Michigan City.
Survivors include four sons, Durmon Troy Butler, Detroit, San Antonio Butler, Michigan City, Shawn Major Butler, South Bend, and Montoan Butler, Atlanta; eight daughters, Renita Ellis, Tico Crawford, Chaquis Smith and Angie Butler, all of Michigan City, Naurine Harvey, Detroit, Juanita Jones, Dionne Butler Wade and Jasma Butler, all of South Bend; one step-daughter, Candace Young, Michigan City; more than 20 grandchildren; two sisters, Vicky Leonard, South Bend, and Donna Jean Lewis, Michigan City; three brothers, Bruce Lewis, Denver, Colo., Charles Lewis, South Bend, and Benjamin Lewis, Nashville, Tenn.; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends.
Mr. Butler worked at DZ Butler & Son's Auto Repair Shop in Michigan City. He was a Michigan City resident for 34 years, moving here from South Bend. He was a member of Pentecostal C.O.G.I.C.
Carl Wisthoff
Carl E. Wisthoff, 88, Michigan City, died at 3:50 a.m. Wednesday (July 16, 2003) at Lifecare Center of Michigan City.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church with the Rev. James McGrogan officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, and 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. A vigil service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Mr. Wisthoff was born Oct. 30, 1914, in Michigan City, to Phillip and Mary (Konkey) Wisthoff. On Aug. 11, 1943, in Michigan City he married Ruth L. Coughlin, who survives.
Also surviving are three sons, James (Retta) Wisthoff, and Lawrence (Donna) Wisthoff, Indianapolis, and Robert (Barbara) Wisthoff, Michigan City; two daughters, Johanna (Steven) Oszuscik, Culver, Ind., and Sheila (Frank) Smalling, Pomona, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Joseph Wisthoff, Crown Point, Ind., and Anthony Wisthoff, Michigan City; and one sister, Martha Lashbrook, Michigan City.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Phillip, John, Bert and Michael Wisthoff, and one sister, Marie Povlock.
Mr. Wisthoff was retired as an assembler for the Excelsior Bicycle Factory. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of WWII.

Fleming Peteet
Fleming Peteet, 83, Michigan City, died at 4:19 a.m. Saturday (July 19, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Stanley Mason officiating. Burial will be in Swan Lake Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. with family hour from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Coleman-Williams & Hicks Funeral Home handled arrangements.
He was born Sept. 19, 1919, in Kosciusko, Miss., to Charlie and Daisy (Teague) Peteet. On Oct. 26, 1963, in Chicago, he married Dorothy Reed, who survives.
Survivors also include two sons, Tyrone (Marilyn) Peteet, Michigan City, and Ernest (Lynette) Peteet, Bay St. Louis, Miss.; one daughter, Mary Ann (Johnny) Langham, Michigan City; one brother, William (Eloise) Peteet, Kosciusko, Miss.; one sister, Allene Love, Jackson, Mich.; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Mr. Peteet moved to Michigan City in 1957 from Mississippi. He was retired as a custodian for Michigan City Area Schools. Mr. Peteet served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church.
Barbara Lentz
LaPORTE - Barbara Ann Lentz, 71, LaPorte, died at 11:16 p.m. Wednesday (July 23, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.
The funeral is at 1 p.m. Saturday at Carlisle Funeral Home, with Dr. Ernest Geist officiating. Cremation will take place. Visitation is from 11 a.m. until the service Saturday at the funeral home.
She was born Jan. 21, 1932, in Chicago to Maiben and Marie (Weir) Davis. On Aug. 5, 1971, in Chicago, she married Roland Lentz, who survives in LaPorte.
Survivors also include three daughters, Dawn Marie (Bill) Brown and Robbin Kilroe, both of Michigan City, and Kelli Steenport, LaPorte; one son, Gregory Lentz, Boise, Idaho; eight grandchildren; one sister, Marilyn (Ted) Hoffman, Chicago; and one brother, James (Kathy) Davis, Tucker, Ga.
Two brothers, Robert and Donald Davis, preceded her in death.
Mrs. Lentz was a volunteer at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers and at area several nursing homes for many years. She lived in Michigan City since 1974, coming from Chicago.
Betty Hill
PORTER - Betty Jane Hill, 61, Porter, died Sunday (July 20, 2003) at Porter Memorial Hospital, Valparaiso.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 Wednesday at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton.
She was born Dec. 26, 1941, in Akron, Ohio, to Steven and Fannie (Beck) Hegedus. On Dec. 29, 1981, in Valparaiso, she married Donald R. Hill, who survives.
Survivors also include three sons, Tom S. (Carol) Aldrich, Bristol, Ind., Larry E. (Will) Aldrich, Seattle, Wash., and John A. Hill, Porter; three daughters, Terry L. Aldrich, Portage, Lori K. Aldrich, Valparaiso, and Doni R. Hill (Jeremy Fisk), Porter; one brother, Steven (Nancy) Hegedus, Toledo, Ohio; three sisters, Judy Murphy, Sturgis, Mich., Stephanie (Russ) Dillon, Michigan City, and Paula Hegedus, LaGrange, Ind.; and three grandchildren, Logan, Jacob and Morgan Aldrich.
Mrs. Hill was an area resident since September 1981. She was a homemaker and was very active in the New Life Wesleyan Church.

Richard Nelson
LaPORTE - Richard J. Nelson, LaPorte, died at 9:50 a.m. Monday (July 21, 2003) at LaPorte Hospital.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Haverstock Funeral Home, with the Rev. Arthur Good officiating. Burial will be in Pine Lake Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 8 a.m. until the service Saturday at the funeral home.
He was born Nov. 1, 1944, in LaPorte, to Robert and Irene (Edwards) Nelson. On May 29, 2003, in Fish Lake, he married Lois Massey, who survives in LaPorte.
Survivors also include one daughter, Kari Wilke, LaPorte; two sons, Steve Nelson, LaPorte, and Eric Nelson, Germany; one sister, Barbara Piper, Marion, Ind.; one brother, David Nelson, Michigan City; and two grandchildren.
One sister, Shirley Logman, also preceded Mr. Nelson in death.
Mr. Nelson lived all his life in the LaPorte area. For 24 years, Mr. Nelson worked at M.G. Gilbert as an equipment and machine operator. He was a member of Fish Lake Assembly of God Church. Mr. Nelson also was a member of Local 1393 IBEW.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
Jean Stufoso
LaPORTE - Jean M. Stufoso, 88, LaPorte, died at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday (July 22, 2003) at her home.
The Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, LaPorte, with the Rev. Gerald A. Sroka officiating. Burial is in Pine Lake Cemetery. Visitation is from 9 to 10:45 a.m. Saturday at the church. Essling Funeral Home, LaPorte, handled the arrangements.
She was born Dec. 29, 1914, in LaPorte to Joseph and Anna (Marynicz) Ciecka. On Dec. 28, 1946, in LaPorte, she married Raymond P. Stufoso, who died April 15, 1981.
Survivors include one niece, Barbara Samuelson, LaPorte; one nephew, Thomas J. Ciecka, Danville, Ill.; and several great and great-great-nieces and nephews.
Two brothers, the Rev. Joseph Ciecka CSC and Thomas G. Ciecka, preceded her in death.
Mrs. Stufoso was a homemaker and former Sacristan for 18 years at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She also was a member of the church's Altar Rosary Society and P.R.C.U.
Bonnie Davis
LaPORTE - Bonnie Sue Davis, 56, LaPorte, died at 10:33 p.m. Thursday (July 24, 2003) at her home.
The memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Carlisle Funeral Home with the Rev. William Babb officiating. Cremation will take place. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until the service Monday at the funeral home.
She was born Dec. 11, 1946, in Stanton, Tenn., to John Thomas and Nancy Jane (Simpson) Jackson. They both survive in Michigan City.
Survivors also include one son, Daniel (Virginia) Davis, Michigan City; one daughter, Cynthia Ann (William) Hyatte, Mooresville, Ind.; four grandchildren; two brothers, Larry (Linda) Jackson, LaPorte, and John (Linda) Jackson, Michigan City; and five sisters, Nancy (George) Payne, Anne (Ronnie) Wilke and Barbara (Larry) Cowgill, all of Michigan City, Betty (Sammy) Riley, Batesville, Ark., and Linda (Ken) Fensler, Fort Wayne, Ind.
Preceding Mrs. Davis in death was one grandson, Daniel Lee Vega Jr.
Mrs. Davis had been employed in the accounting office of Wal-Mart in Baytown, Texas, for 12 years. She was a graduate of Mansfield Business College in El Paso, Texas. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister and daughter.

Vivian Crizer
PORTAGE - Vivian V. Crizer, 83, Portage, died Sunday (July 27, 2003).
Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Rees Funeral Home, 600 W. Old Ridge Road, Hobart.
Mrs. Crizer is survived by three sons, Daucy Clarke (Joyce) Crizer III, Westville, Dwight H. Crizer, San Mateo, Calif., and Kurt M. (Lisa) Crizer, Westville; three daughters, Kathleen E. (James) Eaton, Valparaiso, Joyce E. (Charles) Daniels, Berrien Springs, Mich., and Dawn B. (Walter) Yovanovich, Valparaiso; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandsons; nieces and nephews; and two brothers-in-law, Donald O. Crizer and Willard Newcom.
Preceding Mrs. Crizer in death were her husband, Daucy C. Crizer Jr.; her parents, Herman W. and Edithe E. Swanson; two brothers, Harold "Tootie" Swanson and Earl "Bub" Swanson; and two sisters, Edna Anderson and Bernice Moore.
Mrs. Crizer was a Portage resident most of her life. She was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church in Hobart. She was active in the church "Sew-Be-Its" quilting group and the women of the E.L.C.A. Mrs. Crizer was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Augustana Lutheran Church Foundation.
Renetta Hackstedt
LaPORTE - Renetta Hackstedt, 84, LaPorte, died Sunday (July 27, 2003) in LaPorte.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Newhard Funeral Home, Westville. Burial will be in Pinhook Cemetery.
Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, 58 W. Walnut St., Westville.
Mrs. Hackstedt was born Sept. 19, 1918, in LaPorte, to George and Hattie (Hitz) Schlack. On May 4, 1946, in LaPorte, she married Alvin F. Hackstedt, who died Oct. 7, 1994.
Survivors include one son, Glenn (Carla) Hackstedt, LaPorte; one daughter, Mary (Richard) Lambert, LaPorte; and five grandchildren.
Mrs. Hackstedt was a life-long resident of LaPorte. She was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ in LaPorte and the St. Paul's Women's Guild.
Memorials may be made to the St. Paul United Church of Christ Women's Guild Fund.
Rita McUne
GARY - Rita F. McUne, 53, Gary, died Sunday (July 27, 2003).
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Burns Funeral Home, Merrillville/Crown Point Chapel, with the Rev. Phillip Muvich officiating. Cremation will follow the service.
Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home at 101st Street and Broadway.
Survivors include one daughter, Shelia Estrada, Wheatfield, Ind.; one son, Thomas Rhoads, Mesa, Ariz.; her mother, Bessie Kindler, Gary; two sisters, Darlene (Dennis) Flores, Valparaiso, and Felicia Kindler, Hobart, Ind.; one brother, Kenneth Willis of Kentucky; two grandchildren, Taryn and Alan Estrada; one great grandson, Dylan Estrada, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, Ovll Willis.
Mrs. McUne, was a graduate of River Forest High School. She was a licensed practical nurse and had received her nursing degree from Ivy Tech in Michigan City. She worked in marketing and nursing for St. Anthony Hospice, Michigan City. She was also a member of the Lions Club in Michigan City.
Memorials may be made to the St. Anthony Hospice.
Harold Ricca
CHESTERTON - Harold E. Ricca, 73, Chesterton, died Saturday (July 26, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.
The Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick Catholic Church, with the Rev. Lawrence Heeg and the Rev. James Meade concelebrating. After the services, cremation will take place through Heritage Crematory, Portage, with intermenty of ashes at St. Patrick Cemetery in Chesterton.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., with a wake service at 7 p.m., today at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home.
Mr. Ricca was born Nov. 23, 1929, in Peoria, Ill., to Dominic and Jennie (Guilliams) Ricca. On June 22, 1957, in Peoria, he married Kathleen A. Du Bois, who survives in Chesterton.
Survivors also include four daughters, Barbara Ricca, Tucson, Ariz., Joyce (Randy) Christians, Derby, Kan., Joanne (Rico) Salazar, Austin, Texas, and Carol (Rod) Howard, Indianapolis; two brothers, Tom Ricca, Metamora, Ill., and Mike Ricca, Peoria; one sister, Theresa Applegren, Peoria; and 12 grandchildren.
Preceding Mr. Ricca in death were three brothers, Don, Paul and Jim Ricca; and one sister, Mary Hattenberg.
Mr. Ricca had been an area resident since 1962. He was retired as an electrical engineer for Northern Indiana Public Service Co.
Mr. Ricca was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He belonged to St. Patrick Catholic Church, serving as an usher and volunteering in many ways for the church. Mr. Ricca was a member of Knights of Columbus, volunteered for Meals on Wheels, was a former member of the Porter Park Board and served as a tax aid for AARP at the Westchester Public Library. Mr. Ricca also was an enthusiastic golfer and bowler.
Memorial contributions may be made to either the Porter County Cancer Society or St. Patrick Catholic Church.
Martha Solberg
Martha L. Solberg, 68, Michigan City, died at 1:20 p.m. Friday (August 1, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.
Cremation will take place and a memorial Mass will be celebrated at a later date at Notre Dame Catholic Church. Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Solberg was born August 23, 1934, in Michigan City, to Armand and Laura (Mote) Boudreau. On Feb. 1, 1958, in Michigan City, she married Dale A. Solber, who preceded her on Sept. 26, 1991.
She is survived by two daughters, Pamela (John) Jasiniewski, Michigan City, and Cheryl (Michael) Notorargelo, Palos Heights, Ill.; two sons, Jeffery Solberg, Michigan City, and Mark (Lori) Solberg, Wheaton, Ill.; six grandchildren; one brother, Everett Boudreau, LaPorte, and one sister, Charlotte Solberg, LaPorte.
She was preceded by her parents, one brother, George Boudreau, and two sisters, Mildred Bolka and Dorothy Shank.
Mrs. Solberg was a member of Notre Dame Catholic Church. She was retired as a patient care representative from St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers. She also worked for more than 51 years with various physicians, including Dr. Russell Gardner, Dr. M.D. Gardner, Dr. Frank McGue, Dr. David Pulido, Dr. Weldon Cooke and Med Watch of Indiana.
Memorials may be made to the Open Door Health Clinic.
Walter Berg
LAKE PLACID, Fla. - Walter A. Berg, 75, Lake Placid, Fla., formerly of Michigan City, died at 8:30 p.m. Friday (August 1, 2003) at Florida Hospital, Orlando.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Carlisle Funeral Home. There will be a private family burial of ashes at a later date.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. until the service Thursday.
Mr. Berg was born July 25, 1928, in Michigan City, to Irving C. and Irene N. (Linn) Berg. He married Catherine Kunze, who survives.
He is also survived by two daughters, Connie (Randal) Berg-Bennet, Bentonville, Ark., and Lucia Zefferelli Madden (formerly Cindy Berg), Tucson, Ariz.; two stepsons, Edward and Jimmy Kunze, Lansdale, Pa.; four grandchildren; and two brothers, Charles Berg, Michigan City, and Elwin Berg, Minneapolis.
Mr. Berg owned and operated Bergs Flowers and Gifts in Michigan City, retiring in 1985. A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he was a member of the Elks, Moose Lodge 980, Skwiat Post 451 and was an avid golfer.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Myasthenia Gravis Association.
