Ruth Fleming
ROCK FALLS, Ill - Ruth E. Fleming, 84, Rock Falls, died Friday (Aug. 1, 2003) after an illness.
Cremation rites have been accorded. Burial of the cremains will be at a later date in Michigan City.
Mrs. Fleming was born Sept. 27, 1918, in Canton, Mo., to Marcus and Zula J. (Brner) Eaton. She married Robert E. Fleming, who died in 1989.
Survivors include two daughters, Pamela (Joseph) Padilla, Rock Falls, and Cynthia (Michael) Rodgers-McClain, Snow Flake, Ariz., and seven grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters.
Mrs. Fleming was a member of Wesly United Methodist Church, Sterling, Ill., and enjoyed games of bridge and poker.
Arrangements were handled by the McDonald Funeral Home & Crematory, Rock Falls.
Joan Pyzyna
Joan C. Pyzyna, 80, Michigan City, died at 6 a.m. Thursday (July 31, 2003) at her home.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Michigan City, with the Rev. Mike Wands officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Michigan City.
Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 10 a.m. until the service Monday at the funeral chapel.
Mrs. Pyzyna was born Oct. 30, 1922, in Michigan City, to Sam and Margaret (Eisenblatter) Cully. On Sept. 19, 1942, in LaPorte, she married Edward S. Pyzyna, who died Wednesday, July 30, 2003.
Survivors include one daughter, Sally Carpenter, Michigan City; two granddaughters, Laura (Rob) Henderson, and Lisa Carpenter, both of Fond Du Lac, Wis.; and three great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Pyzyna was a homemaker and a member of the First Christian Church, where she was director of Senior Adult Ministry. She was a graduate of the Elston High School Class of 1942 and loved gardening and cooking.
Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church.
Edward Pyzyna
Edward S. Pyzyna, 81, Michigan City, died at 8:46 a.m. Wednesday (July 30, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.
The funeral will be at 11 am. Monday at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Mike Wands officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery with full military rites performed by the American Legion Skwiat Post 451.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 10 a.m. until the service Monday at the funeral chapel. Memorial services conducted by American Legion Skwiat Post 451 will be at 7 p.m. Sunday in the funeral chapel.
He was born Jan. 13, 1922, in Michigan City, to Stanley and Helen (Karkiewicz) Pyzyna. On Sept. 19, 1942, in LaPorte, he married Joan Cully, who died Thursday, July 31, 2003.
Survivors include one daughter, Sally Carpenter, Michigan City; two granddaughters, Laura (Rob) Henderson and Lisa Carpenter, both of Fond Du Lac, Wis.; and three great-grandchildren.
Mr. Pyzyna was retired from Josam Manufacturing, having worked as maintenance electrician for 33 years. He served the U.S. Army in WWII and was a member of the American Legion Skwiat Post 451. Mr. Pyzyna was a member of First Christian Church and enjoyed gardening. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and was a friend to all who knew him.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church.
James Johnson
James E. Johnson, 52, Michigan City, died at 6:10 a.m. Friday (Aug. 1, 2003) at his home.
The memorial service will be at noon Monday at Coleman-Williams & Hicks. Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery, Joliet, Ill.
He was born April 18, 1951, in Memphis, Tenn.
Survivors include his wife, JoAnne Johnson, Michigan City; his mother, Iola Johnson Foeshe, Michigan City; two sons, Joseph and Rueben Johnson, Washington, D.C.; four daughters, Robin Johnson, Beatrice Johnson and Iona Johnson, all of Washington, D.C., and Latonya Johnson, Chicago; one sister, Mary Louise Wilborn; five grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, cousins and friends.
Mr. Johnson lived in Michigan City for 12 years, coming from Washington D.C., where he was on honorable discharge from the U.S. Marine Corps.
Jerry Scroggins Jr.
FISH LAKE - Jerry W. Scroggins Jr., 39, Fish Lake, died Thursday (July 31, 2003) in West Plains, Mo.
The memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Sauktown Church of Christ, Mill Creek, with the Rev. Howard Simmons officiating. Cremation took place. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte.
He was born June 4, 1964, in Hammond, Ind., to Jerry Scroggins Sr., Lowell, Ind., and Peggy (Farrow) Dupin, Portage, Ind.
Survivors also include his soul mate, Jennifer Scroggins, Fish Lake; one son, Tyler Scroggins, Fish Lake; two sisters, Debra Postma, Demotte, Ind., and DeAnna Scroggins, Lowell, Ind.; three half-sisters, Kris Scroggins, Lowell, Katerina Chavez, Portage, Ind., and Alicia Chavez, Lake Station, Ind.; two half-brothers, Jeff and James Scroggins, Lowell; his stepmother, Connie Scroggins, Lowell; and 15 nieces and nephews.
Mr. Scroggins was a truck driver for Mid-States Trucking. He lived in the Fish Lake area since 1988, coming from Lowell. He was a member of Sauktown Church of Christ and had served on the church board. Mr. Scroggins also was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Sauktown Church of Christ in Mill Creek.
Paul Tinsley
LaPORTE - Paul A. Tinsley, 83, LaPorte, died at 6:46 p.m. Wednesday (July 30, 2003) at LaPorte Hospital.
A memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Haverstock Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ted Nordquist officiating. Cremation will take place. There will be no visitation.
He was born July 1, 1920, in Chicago, to James H. and Gertrude (Reynolds) Tinsley. On May 21, 1948, in Chicago, he married Myrtle V. Stueben, who survives.
Survivors also include one niece, Catherine Izydorski, LaPorte; one great-niece, Victoria Izydorski, LaPorte; and one great-nephew, Jeffery (Kelli) Izydorski, Three Oaks, Mich.
Mr. Tinsley was the head safety advisor for Commonwealth Edison. He retired in 1984. Mr. Tinsley was an honorably discharged veteran of WWII, serving from 1942 to 1945. For his efforts in the liberation of Normandy, he was presented with the medal of the Jubilee of Liberty in July 1997. After retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Tinsley moved to Las Vegas, Prescott, Ariz., Cleburne, Texas and finally LaPorte in 2001.
Mr. Tinsley was a nature lover. He fed the wildlife and had many canine companions. He also was an avid gardener.
He was a member of the LaPorte VFW and the World Wildlife Foundation. To his family, he was known as the cookie nabber. He will be loved forever and never be forgotten.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society, the LaPorte Animal Shelter, or to Mixed Up Mutts.
Henry Kolasa
Henry N. Kolasa, 83, Michigan City, died at 10:53 a.m. Friday (August 1, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with the Rev. James McGrogan officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. The American Legion Skwiat Post 451 will conduct full military services at the cemetery.
Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Ott Haverstock Funeral Chapel and from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral chapel. A vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Monday with a memorial service by the American Legion Skwiat Post 451 to follow.
Mr. Kolasa was born Jan. 1, 1920, in Lublin, Wis., to Andrew Sr. and Rose (Serafin) Kolasa. On June 6, 1941, in Michigan City, he married Dorothy Uselton, who preceded him on May 3, 1987.
He is survived by six sons, Bob Kolasa, Nashville, Tenn., Christopher (Connie) Kolasa, Paul Kolasa and Stanley Kolasa, all of Michigan City, Ronald (Gail) Kolasa, Port Charlotte, Fla., and Thomas Kolasa, Lindsor, Pa.; two daughters, Norma Safranko, Michigan City, and Judith Dazquez, Beloit, Wisc.; 29 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Walter Kolasa and Andrew Kolasa Jr, both of Michigan City; five sisters; Martha Michaels, Lansing, Ill., Vernie Bolka, Clara Hycner, Josephine Janoski and Lorraine Pritz, all of Michigan City; and one daughter-in-law, Jeannie Kolasa, North Judson, Ind.
He was preceded in death by one son, Norman, one sister, Mary Ciganek, one brother, Fred Kolasa, and two grandchildren.
Mr. Kolasa was retired as a machinist from Josam Manufacturing and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the American Legion Skwiat Post 451.
Lawrence Marchewka
SAWYER, Mich. - Lawrence M. Marchewka, 89, Sawyer, died Friday (August 1, 2003) at his home.
Pobocik Funeral Home Connelly-Noble Chapel, Three Oaks, Mich., is in charge of arrangements. Cremation will take place.
Mr. Marchewka was born July 10, 1914, in Chicago, to Lawrence and Julia (Machowicz) Marchewka, Sr. On Oct. 29, 1949, in Three Oaks, he married Virginia Michalski. She preceded him in death Feb. 28, 2003.
Survivors include one son, Richard (Christine) Marchewka, Kansas City, Mo.; one daughter, Laurene Marchewka, Niles, Mich.; two grandchildren; one great-grandson; and two sisters, Julia and Florence.
Mr. Marchewka grew up in Chicago and attended Notre Dame University. He worked as a farmer in Sawyer and as a hardwood lumber inspector at Graizer Hardwoods in Chicago until his retirement in 1976.
He attended St. Agnes Catholic Church in Sawyer. He enjoyed watching the stock market and was a devoted Chicago Cubs fan.

Garnet Woss
Garnet Laura Woss, 88, Michigan City, died at 11:30 a.m. Saturday (August 2, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Victoria Smith officiating. Burial will be in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens.
Visitation is from 1 p.m. until the service Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Woss was born Jan. 18, 1915, in Michigan City, to Christopher and Laura (Harmann) Lubke. On Aug. 22, 1936, in LaPorte, she married Al E. Woss, who preceded her on July 15, 1970.
She is survived by one daughter, Karen (Steve) Janus, Michigan City; two sons, Dr. Kurt (Patty) Woss, Westchester, Ill., and Kenneth Woss, Michigan City; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one sister, Evelyn Hager, Michigan City.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Elmer Libke; and two sisters, Corinne Kintzele and Ruth Smith.
Mrs. Woss was a homemaker and a member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Michigan City. She graduated from Elston High School in 1933. She was a devoted mother and homemaker who worked part-time at Woolworth's and Sears restaurant. She also worked as a part-time clerk at J.C. Penney's.
Memorials may be made to St. John's United Church of Christ.
Lois Clark
WANATAH - Lois Leanna Clark, 86, Wanatah, died Saturday (Aug. 2, 2003) at her home.
The funeral is at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wanatah Funeral Chapel, Wanatah, with the Rev. Dick Shepperd officiating. Burial is in Graceland Cemetery, Valparaiso. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral chapel.
Mrs. Clark was born April 18, 1917, on the family farm to Arthur Leroy and Nellie Gertrude (Hammersley) Goodwin. On July 18, 1943, on the family farm, she married Robert W. Clark, who died May 18, 1999.
Surviving are three children, Robert A. (Debbie) Clark, Wanatah, Mary L. (Dennis) Dahlstrom, Chehalis, Wash., Thomas (Denise) Clark, Fort Wayne; two sisters, Florence Poston, LaPorte, and Dorothy Schultz, Osceola, Ind.; seven grandchildren, Tammy Moser, Bridget and Tiffany Clark, Lauren Palmateer, John Emerick, Eric and Natalie Clark; and one great-grandson, Logan Robert Moser.
Mrs. Clark was a Clinton Township School graduate who attended South Bend Beauty Culture School. In the early 1940s, she worked as a hairdresser in LaPorte and later was a cook at South Central School for 18 years. She attended LaCrosse Christian Church.

Patricia Miller
CHESTERTON - Patricia A. Miller, 39, Chesterton, died Friday evening (Aug. 1, 2003) at VNA Horton Hospice Center, Valparaiso.
The Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 638 N. Calumet Road, Chesterton, with the Rev. James Meade officiating. Burial is in Holy Cross Cemetery, Calumet City, Ill. Visitation is from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at White-Love Funeral Home, Chesterton.
Mrs. Miller was born Oct. 3, 1963, in Chicago.
Surviving are her husband, Darren Miller, Chesterton; two sons, Nicholas Miller, serving in the U.S. Navy in Virginia, and Matthew Miller, Chesterton; two daughters, Cassidy and Jenna Miller, both of Chesterton; her mother, Marie Sincavitch, Calumet City; a sister, Christine Sincavitch, Calumet City; a brother, James Sincavitch, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and her mother-in-law, Faith Miller, Tennessee.
Her father, Richard Sincavitch, died in 1994 and her brother, Robert Sincavitch, in 1997.
Mrs. Miller was a legal secretary. She was a 1981 graduate of Thornton Fractional North High School. She was a member St. Patrick Catholic Church.
Memorials may be given to the family.
Lester Truex
NEW CARLISLE - Lester E. Truex, 84, New Carlisle, died at 7:50 a.m. Sunday (Aug. 3, 2003) at St. Joseph Medical Center, South Bend.
The funeral is at 11 a.m. Wednesday at North Liberty Church of the Brethren, with the Rev. David Pinkham officiating. Burial is in Westlawn Cemetery, North Liberty, Ind. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte, and 10 a.m. until the service Wednesday at the church.
Mr. Truex was born Sept. 11, 1918, in LaPorte County to Ervine and Minnie V. (Fox) Truex. On April 12, 1941, in North Liberty, he married Edna M. Houser. She survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Patricia Dzierla, Russiaville, Ind., Jan Macias, New Carlisle, Linda Neidlinger, LaPorte; a son, Larry Truex, New Carlisle; a sister, Gladys Hahn, North Liberty; two brothers, Melvin Truex, Mill Creek, and Russell Truex, New Carlisle; 12 grandchildren; a step-grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.
A grandchild and two brothers preceded him in death.
Mr. Truex retired in 1981 with 30 years of service as a store keeper with Bendix Corp. He also was a lifelong farmer, working on the family farm. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and a member of North Liberty Church of the Brethren.
Memorials may be made to the church's scholarship fund.
Ada Caddell
OTIS - Ada Theresa Caddell, 73, Otis, died Monday (Aug. 4, 2003) at her home.
A memorial lunch is at 1 p.m. Sunday at St. Mary Hall, Otis. Memorial services are at 3 p.m. in the hall. If attending the lunch, RSVP by Thursday by calling (219) 785-4465. Newhard Funeral Home, Westville, is handling the arrangements.
She was born Jan. 17, 1930, in Chicago to Marjan and Jadwiga Karlowicz. On Feb. 4, 1950, she married Richard W. Caddell, who died May 2, 1997.
Survivors include three sons, Richard (Mary Beth) Caddell, James (Cassie) Caddell and Thomas (Angie) Caddell; five grandchildren, Jennifer Holt, Jeremy Caddell, Lisa Hicks, Kelly Caddell and Tom Caddell; two great-grandchildren, Ashley Caddell and Alexander Holt; one sister, Wanda (Tom) Kasper; one brother, Titus Karlowicz; several brothers- and sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Caddell graduated from Steinmetz High School in Chicago and attended the University of Chicago.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Anthony Volunteer Guild, Westville Public Library or Open Door Health Center in Michigan City.
Kenneth Kemmer
NEW BUFFALO, Mich., and CHICAGO - Kenneth F. Kemmer, 81, New Buffalo and Chicago, died Sunday (Aug. 3, 2003) at his home.
The funeral is at 2 p.m. EDT Thursday at Smith Funeral Home, New Buffalo, with burial in Pine Grove Cemetery. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. EDT Wednesday at the funeral home.
He was born Nov. 28, 1921, in Chicago to Frank P. and Clara L. (Schelp) Kemmer. On April 23, 1995, in St. Margaret of Scotland Church, Chicago, he married Loretta L. McCarthy, who survives.
Survivors also include two daughters, Nancy Ann (George) Albrecht, New Buffalo, and Patricia C. (Robert) Kaveckas, Evergreen Park, Ill.; four grandchildren, Kenneth J. and Paul E. Moser, Matthew R. Albrecht and Tayler A. Kaveckas; one great-grandson, Patrick W. Moser; one brother-in-law, Edward J. McCarthy, Hinsdale, Ill.; and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Kemmer enjoyed a varied career as a machinist, an Illinois State Trooper and retired as an engineer from the Chicago Fire Department. For four years he was a machinist in the U.S. Navy. He served during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He was an avid boater and woodworker. He was past commodore of the Four Winds Yacht Club and a 25-year member of the Lake Michigan Yacht Club. He also served as a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary for more than 40 years and was a long-standing member of AF&AM.
Mildred Melton
HANNA - Mildred H. Melton, 94, Hanna, died Monday (Aug. 4, 2003) at Altera Sterling House, Portage, Ind.
The funeral is at 1 p.m. Thursday at Dykes Funeral Home, Valparaiso, with Michael H. Porter officiating. Burial is in Hanna Cemetery. Visitation is from 11 a.m. until the service Thursday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Melton was born Nov. 12, 1908, in Hanna to Fred and Minnie (Selby) Zable. Survivors include one great-niece, Linda (George) Pomeroy, Chesterton; two great-great-nephews, Robert and Tom Pomeroy; one great-great-niece, Amy Pomeroy; and three great-great-great-nieces.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Klien Melton; one son, Jerry; and one sister, Marie Murray.
A lifetime Hanna resident, Mrs. Melton was a member of Rebecca Lodge and Hanna Culture Club.
Memorial contributions may be made to Horton VNA Hospice Center.
Brian Priest
SAWYER, Mich. - Brian Scott Priest, 9, Sawyer, died Monday morning (Aug. 4, 2003) at his mother's home in South Haven, Mich.
The funeral is at 11 a.m. EDT Thursday at Harbert Community Church, Harbert and Three Oaks roads, with the Rev. Eric Jarvis, of South Haven First Assembly of God Church, officiating. Burial is in Riverside Cemetery, Chikaming Township. Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. EDT Wednesday at Pobocik Funeral Home Connelly-Noble Chapel, Three Oaks.
Brian was born Oct. 13, 1993, in Niles, Mich.
Survivors include his mother, Jennifer Joy Ling, South Haven; his father, Brian William Priest, Sawyer; a brother, Eric Allen Priest, Lawrenceburg, Ky.; a sister, Morgan Jenel Priest, South Haven; and his grandparents, John and Connie Flesch, South Haven, Floyd and Laurice Hucko, Coloma, Mich., and Bill and Gloria Priest, Three Oaks, Mich.
Brian attended Chikaming Elementary School until illness made it difficult to attend at the end of third grade last spring. He loved going to the beach, swimming and fishing. He also enjoyed building things with Legos, and using tools to build out of wood. Some of his favorite music were songs by Jimmy Buffett, Joe Walch and Tom Petty. He was a good big brother, watching out for little sister Morgan.
Memorials may be made to the National Children's Cancer Research Center or Chikaming Elementary School.
