Beulah Shepherd
WALKERTON, Ind. - Beulah Shepherd, 82, Walkerton, died at 5:30 a.m. Sunday (Aug. 3, 2003) at Miller's Merry Manor, Walkerton.
The funeral is at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte, with the Rev. J. Rodney Rudd and the Rev. Clark Harless officiating. Burial is in Highland Cemetery, North Judson, Ind. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today and 11 a.m. until the service Wednesday at the funeral home.
She was born Jan. 1, 1921, in Garrett, Ky., to Everett and Olivia (Vanderpool) Bentley. On June 19, 1937, in Prestonburg, Ky., she married George W. Shepherd, who died Sept. 23, 1950.
Survivors include three daughters, Sula Combs, Knox, Ind., Faye Smith, Warsaw, Ind., and Sharon Heirbrandt, Mill Creek; two sons, Ray Shepherd, Douglasville, Ga., and Nick Shepherd, Huntington, Ind.; one sister, Dorlis Stoudinger, Battle Creek, Mich.; one brother, Orville Bentley, Babbit, Minn.; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son and one sister.
Mrs. Shepherd worked in housekeeping at LaPorte Hospital for 11 years, retiring in 1986. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Knox, and Warsaw Wesleyan Church.

Frank Parker
Frank Douglas Parker, 52, Kenosha, Wis., died Saturday (Aug. 2, 2003) at Home Hospital in Lafayette, Ind.
The funeral will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the Root Funeral Home. The Rev. Tim Baines will officiate, with burial to follow in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens.
Friends may call from 2 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 10:30 until 11:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Mr. Parker was born July 14, 1951, in LaPorte to Frank Eugene and Velma Bruemmer Parker.
Survivors include two sisters, Doriann (Dave) Wiegand, Michigan City and Trisha Neff , Brookston, Ind.; a brother, Stuart (Rhonda) Parker, Delphi, Ind.; four stepsisters, Debbie (Sam) Emerson, Arlington, Texas; Lisa McGuiness, New Buffalo, Mich.; and Kimberly (Larry) Russell and Sheri Sager, Michigan City; a stepbrother, Douglas McGuiness, Milan, Ind.; four nieces and four nephews; a great-niece and three great-nephews; and his stepmother, Priscilla Parker Favia of LaPorte, and his beloved cat, Katie.
His parents preceded him in death.
Mr. Parker was an interthermal form packaging engineer for Heartland EPS in Waukegan, Ill.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force who served during the Vietnam War. He was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and was a competition target shooting sportsman. Mr. Parker loved to camp.

Joseph Rappelli
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Joseph A. Rappelli, 78, South Bend, formerly of Michigan City, died at 10:35 a.m. Sunday (August 3, 2003) after a short illness.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 63568 S. U.S. 31, South Bend. Burial will be in Southlawn Cemetery.
Visitation is from 3 to 8 p.m. today at McGann Funeral Home, 2313 Edison Road, South Bend. The Rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mr. Rappelli was born November 27, 1924, in Michigan City, to Dominic and Leonarda (Tobia) Rappelli. On July 28, 1956, in Chicago, he married Frances Vitale, who survives in South Bend, where they have lived for 58 years.
Survivors also include two sons, Dominic L. (Karen) Rappelli, Dowagiac, Mich., and Joe J. (Jeanne) Rappelli, Granger, Ind.; four grandchildren, Rachel, L.J., Dominic and Nick; and two sisters, his twin sister, Mary, and Leeann.
Mr. Rappelli was in business for 43 years as an owner of Guiseppe's Restaurant in South Bend. He retired in 1991.
He was a member of the Sheriff's Posse for 30 years and was a veteran of World War II. He was a member of the American Legion Post 50, Knights of Columbus and Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of St. Joseph County.
Kathryn Almaguer
LaPORTE - Kathryn L. Almaguer, 56, LaPorte, died at 12:11 p.m. Monday (Aug. 4, 2003) at LaPorte Hospital.
The family will receive guests from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, at the Falcons, 216 E. Lincolnway, LaPorte. Essling Funeral Home handled arrangements.
Mrs. Almaguer was born May 26, 1947, in LaPorte, to Harry and Helen (Wengiel) Jacobs. Her mother survives in LaPorte.
Survivors also include one daughter, Helena Almaguer, Chicago; two sons, Antonio and Martin Almaguer, both of LaPorte; two sisters, Millicent Downing, Las Vegas, Nev., and Judith Jacobs, Columbia, S.C.; two brothers, Gerald Jacobs, LaPorte, and Woodrow Jacobs, South Bend, Ind.; and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Almaguer was a homemaker. She was a member of the Maple City Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps and a supporter of Kiwanis Kavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps.
Dolores P. Althoff
EFFINGHAM, Ill. -- Dolores P. Althoff, 77, Effingham, died at 8:55 p.m. Monday (Aug. 4, 2003) at Memorial Medical Center, Springfield, Ill.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Effingham. Burial will be in St. Anthony Cemetery, Effingham.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the church, with a combined CD of A and C.C.W. Rosary at 4:30 p.m. A parish wake service will be at 6 p.m. today at the church. Bauer Funeral Home, Effingham, handled the arrangements.
Mrs. Althoff was born Aug. 10, 1925, in Effingham, to George H. and Rosa (Schleper) Thoele. On Nov. 27, 1946, she married Arthur W. Althoff, who died in 1988.
Survivors include six sons, Nick (Mary Jo) Althoff, Don (Carol) Althoff and Eric (Jean) Althoff, all of Effingham, Larry (Jan) Althoff, Jerseyville, Ill., Greg Althoff, Tinley Park, Ill., and Vic (Connie) Althoff, Long Beach, Ind.; two daughters, Barbara (Jim) Voelker, Altamont, and Carol (Mike) Zumbahlen, Effingham; 19 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one sister, Rosemary Soltwedel, Effingham.
She was preceded in death by one son, one daughter, one brother and one sister.
Mrs. Althoff was a registered nurse at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers. She was a member of the St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Effingham, the St. Anthony council of Catholic Women, Catholic Daughters of America, the Ladies of charity and the ladies Golf Association at the Effingham Country Club.
Memorials may be made to St. Anthony Church or Schools or to the Catholic Charities.
Beulah Droege
LaPORTE - Beulah "Polly" Droege, 84, LaPorte, died at 12:48 p.m. Thursday (Aug. 7, 2003) at Fountainview Terrace Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
A funeral will be at noon Saturday at Cutler Funeral Home, with the Rev. David Gibbs officiating. Burial will be in Patton Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today and from 11 a.m. until the service Saturday at the funeral home.
She was born Sept. 16, 1918, in Springville, Ky., to Clarence and Elizabeth Polley Pollitt. On June 22, 1946, in LaPorte, she married Robert A. Droege, who died Oct. 14, 1978.
Survivors include one daughter, Robin (Ron) Iori, Dearborn, Mich.; and two grandchildren.
Mrs. Droege retired as a bookkeeper at Pinola Elevator. She was a member of LaPorte Presbyterian Church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the LaPorte Presbyterian Church.
Margaret Jelinek
THREE OAKS, Mich. - Margaret J. Jelinek, 84, Three Oaks, died Tuesday (Aug. 5, 2003) at Hamilton Communities in New Carlisle, Ind.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. CDT Saturday at Genesis Chapel, The Point at Hamilton Communities, New Carlisle, with the Rev. Bob Gault officiating. Pobocik Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
Mrs. Jelinek was born to John and Anna (Kriz) Horak on June 17, 1919, at their home on Featherbone Avenue in Three Oaks. She attended Spring Creek School and received a GED high school diploma from River Valley High School in 1976. She married Edward Jelinek on April 27, 1940, at the First Congregational Church in Three Oaks. He survives.
Survivors also two daughters, Nancy (Jim) Riemann, Wooster, Ohio, and Amy (Robert) Grey, South Bend; two sons, James (Teddie) Jelinek, New Buffalo, Mich., and Tom (Marilyn) Jelinek, Three Oaks; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and sisters Elsie (Richard) Zabel, Three Oaks, and Rose Waldo, Buchanan, Mich.
Her brother, Joseph Horak, preceded her in death.
Mrs. Jelinek and her husband owned and operated a farm, and she was a manager for Tupperware in the early 1970s. She was later employed in the bookkeeping department at the Bank of Three Oaks for 13 years.
She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Three Oaks and was a member of the South Side Home Ec Club in Three Oaks.
Mr. and Mrs. Jelinek enjoyed wintering at Terrace Park, Zepher Hills, Fla., for many years.

Beatrice Parcels
ANAHEIM, Calif. - Beatrice Parcels, 84, Anaheim, died Wednesday (Aug. 6, 2003) at Anaheim Terrace, Anaheim.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 8:30 a.m. Monday at St. Irenaeus Catholic Church, Cypress, Calif. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. with the Rosary recited at 7 p.m. Sunday at Pierce Bros. Anaheim Mortuary. Burial will be private.
Survivors include one son, Richard (Barbara) Parcels; three daughters, Mary Ann (George) Germek, Patricia (Gary) Moore, and Sally (Bob) Linnert; one brother, John Sarasin; and one sister, Pauline Young; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Her husband, Lester Parcels, preceded her in death. Also preceding Mrs. Parcels in death were one son, Bucky, and ten brothers.
Mrs. Parcels was a California resident for 30 years, having come from Michigan City. She was a homemaker.
Ruth Stokes
Ruth M. Stokes, 80, Michigan City, died at 8:46 a.m. Tuesday (Aug. 5, 2003) at her home.
Private family services have taken place. Carlisle Funeral Home handled the arrangements. Private burial of ashes will take place at a later date.
She was born Nov. 1, 1922, in Iowa, to John M. and Anna M. (Eriksson) Stokes.
Survivors include her special friend, William Behr Jr., Michigan City.
One sister also preceded Ms. Stokes in death.
Ms. Stokes had been a supervisor at Indiana Bell in Michigan City for more than 20 years.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
Marie Zboril
UNION PIER, Mich. - Marie F. Zboril, 94, Union Pier, died Thursday morning, (Aug. 7, 2003) at her home.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. EDT Monday at St. Mary of the Lake Church in New Buffalo, with the Rev. Jim Morris officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery in New Buffalo.
Visitation is 2 to 8 p.m. EDT Sunday at Pobocik Funeral Home Connelly-Noble Chapel, Three Oaks, where a Scripture service will be held Sunday evening.
Mrs. Zboril was born Aug. 20, 1908, in Chicago, to Anton and Minnie Kristich. On July 1, 1929, in Chicago, she married Thomas A. Zboril. Mr. Zboril died July 1, 1997.
Survivors include three sons, Thomas (Delores) Zboril, Naples, Fla., Richard (Carol) Zboril, Western Springs, Ill., and Harold (Karen) Zboril, Chicago; one daughter, Susan (Arthur) Matelski, Palos Park, Ill.; 21 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Eleanor Dvorak, Chicago, and Virginia Dvorak, Darien, Ill.
Mrs. Zboril cared for her family and her home, living in Chicago and spending weekends in Union Pier, for 50 years before moving here permanently 11 years ago.
Kenneth Halling
LaPORTE - Kenneth G. Halling, 89, LaPorte, died at 6:40 a.m. Friday (Aug. 8, 2003) at LaPorte Hospital.
A private family service will be Monday. There will be no visitation. Cremation will take place. Haverstock Funeral Home handled arrangements.
He was born Jan. 1, 1914, in LaPorte, to George and Hattie Halling. On Nov. 5, 1938, in LaPorte, he married Lela Simonton, who survives.
Survivors also include one daughter, Marilyn Raymond, LaPorte; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Preceding Mr. Halling in death were two sisters and a half-brother.
Mr. Halling lived in the LaPorte area all his life. He worked as an assembler for Allis-Chalmers for 39 years. He retired in 1975. Mr. Halling was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Carl Lesener
Carl Lesener, 83, Michigan City, died at 3:55 a.m. Thursday (Aug. 7, 2003) at VNA Hospice of Porter County.
The memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at Carlisle Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until the service Sunday at the funeral home.
He was born Feb. 27, 1920, in Amsterdam, Holland, to Antoon M. and Henderina (Doetjes) Lesener. On Jan. 20, 1942, in Amsterdam, he married Anna Swyters, who died Oct. 6, 1989.
Survivors include one son, Frank (Donna) Lesener, Michigan City; one granddaughter, Michelle E. Lesener, Michigan City; and one sister, Ton Engelenberg, Amsterdam.
One sister, Rien Feenstra, also preceded Mr. Lesener in death.
Mr. Lesener worked for Dwyer Instruments for eight years as a tool engineer. He worked at Sprague Devices for 15 years as a director of quality control and retired from Weil-McLain.
Mr. Lesener served in the Dutch Navy during World War II. He was captured in Germany. As a POW, he escaped and served in the Dutch underground during the war. He was then reassigned to the Dutch Marine demolition unit to rid the harbor of mines from the war. After the war, he served with the Dutch police. In 1983, Mr. Lesener received the Medal of Honor for his underground service work during World War II from Queen Beatrix of Holland. In Holland, he was approached by Ford Aircraft to come to Chicago to help engineer jet engines.
Mr. Lesener was a member of the Masonic Acme Lodge No. 922 in Chicago; Acme Lodge 83 F&AM Michigan City; York Rite of Indiana Michigan City Chapter 25 R.A.M.; No. 56 R & SM; and No. 30 K & T. He also belonged to the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite 32 degree, Valley of South Bend; the Orak Shrine R.A.O.N.M.S. of Michigan City; Orak Shrine Hospital Unit; and was an ex-member of the Orak Oriental Band. He was also a member of Moose Lodge 980 and the Society of Automotive Engineering. He was a deputy marshall for the Long Beach Police Department in the 1960s. From 1982 until his death, Mr. Lesener owned and operated his own engineering consulting company, Anca Tool Engineering Company. Mr. Lesener also enjoyed sailing, traveling and Lake Michigan.

Audrey Rudecki
NEW BUFFALO, Mich. - Audrey J. Rudecki, 80, New Buffalo, died Thursday morning (August 7, 2003) at the home she and her husband built and raised their family.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. EDT Tuesday at Pobocik Funeral Home Connelly-Noble Chapel, Three Oaks, with the Rev. Brad Bartlemay officiating. Interment will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery, New Buffalo. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. EDT Monday at the funeral home.
She was born Dec. 21, 1922, in Springfield Township, Ind., to Edward and Gladys (Barnes) Maerz. On May 10, 1944, she married Frank Rudecki, who preceded her in death Oct. 29, 2000.
Mrs. Rudecki graduated from Springfield High School in 1941. She was employed at Allis Chalmers in LaPorte, Bromwell Wire, Gerwin Industries of Michigan City, and she was a secretary for 25 years with Marx & Rudecki Construction Company. She was a Chicago Bears fan and enjoyed sports, reading, fishing and was a member of St. John United Church of Christ in New Buffalo.
Survivors include three daughters, Kathleen (Tom) Anoskey, Galien, Mich., Jeanette Ryan, South Bend, and Peggy (Steve) Swain, New Buffalo; one son, Douglas (Karen) Rudecki, of Three Oaks, Mich.; six grandchildren, Michael and Bill Anoskey, Amber and Jason Rudecki, and Nathan and Sarah Swain; great-grandson Jacob; sister Lila Kruger, New Buffalo; brother Harold (Dewana) Maerz, LaPorte; sister-in-law Dorothy Maerz, LaPorte; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Her brother, Howard Maerz, and infant sister, Mary Eleanor, preceded Mrs. Rudecki in death.
Edward Gondek
Edward Marvin Gondek, 78, Michigan City, died at 9:56 p.m. Tuesday (Aug. 12, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.
The funeral is at 3 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. John Hall officiating. Cremation is planned, with burial of ashes in the Pacific Ocean by the U.S. Navy. Carlisle Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
Mr. Gondek was born May 13, 1925, in Michigan City to Walter and Anna (Wojciek) Gondek. On Sept. 28, 1946, in Michigan City, he married Allene Eikelberg, who survives in Michigan City.
Also surviving are three sons, Patrick Gondek, Tucker, Ga., Douglas (Edna) Gondek, Decatur, Ill., and David (Susan) Gondek, Viera, Fla.; two daughters, Peggy (Tom) Bushore, Flushing, Mich., and Mary Lou (Greg) Goode, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; four grandchildren, Jessica, Taylor, Ashley and Sarah; one brother, Frank (Gloria) Gondek, Michigan City; and one sister, Ann (John) Keleher, Michigan City.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Joseph Gondek, and two sisters, Angel Struley and Mary Carlson.
Mr. Gondek retired as a machinist from Philips Red Head Tool Co. He served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific during World War II. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, a past member and past commander of John Franklin Miller American Legion Post and a member of Westville American Legion. An Elston High School graduate, he also was an avid golf player.

Barbara Kuechenberg
HOLLYWOOD, Fla. - Barbara Sue Kuechenberg, 56, Hollywood, formerly of Michigan City, died Wednesday (July 30, 2003) at Memorial Hospital, Pembroke Pines, Fla., after a long illness.
A private memorial service was held for her family in Michigan City. There was no visitation. Cremation took place in Florida.
Ms. Kuechenberg was born Sept. 29, 1946, in Walnut Ridge, Ark., to Douglas and Edith (Jones) Sinks. In 1969, in Hobart, she married Rudy Kuechenberg, whom she later divorced.
Survivors include one son, Ryan Kuechenberg, Hollywood; one granddaughter, Lexus Kuechenberg, Hollywood; her mother, Edith Sinks, Chesterton; three brothers, John (Patty) Sinks, Lake Station, Jim (Norma) Sinks, Worthville, Ky., and Jerry (Diane) Sinks, Michigan City; two sisters, Bonnie (Don) Lawson and Betty (Dennis) Hollihan, both of Michigan City; five nieces and nephews; many close cousins; and two aunts, Jesse Hennings, Lake Station, and Catherine Sinks, Walnut Ridge.
She was preceded in death by her father and several aunts and uncles.
Ms. Kuecheberg lived in Michigan City before moving to Florida three years ago.
She was a graduate of River Forest High School. She worked a brief time at U.S. Steel, Bethlehem Steel, Shoney's Restaurant and for Creative Interiors as a sales representative. She was disabled for more than two years. She was a member of Calvary church and was excited about her acceptance of Jesus. She loved to paint, sing and sew. She was very talented and artistic.
Memorials may be made to her son and granddaughter, in care of the Church of Christ, 116 Shady Lane, Michigan City, IN 46360.
