George DeWitte
George R. "Dilly" DeWitte, 78, Michigan City, died at 11:30 a.m. Thursday (Sept. 11, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Queen of All Saints Catholic Church, with the Rev. Terrence Chase officiating. Burial will be in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens with full military services conducted by the American Legion Skwiat Post 451.
Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday and from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel. The Wake service will be at 4 p.m., the Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. and the American Legion Skwiat Post 451 memorial service will be at 7:30 p.m. all on Sunday in the funeral chapel.
He was born Sept. 20, 1924, in Moline, Ill., to Camiel and Margaret (Carton) DeWitte. On April 6, 1948, in East Moline, Ill., he married Lucille M. Claeys, who died Jan. 7, 1989.
Survivors include one son, Thomas J. DeWitte, Porter; one daughter, Susan Howard, Michigan City; two sisters, Evelyn (Vince) Tedesco, Pittsburgh, and Mary Welling, Rock Island, Ill.; one grandson, George DeWitte Howard, Michigan City; two granddaughters, Michael Howard and Stephanie (Brad) Lewartowski, both of Michigan City; two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Ryan Lewartowski, both of Michigan City; and one sister-in-law, Donna Claeys, Michigan City.
Also preceding Mr. DeWitte in death were two brothers, Frank and Paul DeWitte.
Mr. DeWitte was the co-owner of the DeWitte's Dairy Queen in Michigan City. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. A member of Queen of All Saints Church, Mr. DeWitte also belonged to Elks Lodge 432, the American Legion Skwiat Post 451, the East End Club of Moline, Ill. and was an avid Notre Dame Football fan for more than 50 years.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Queen of All Saints Church.
Willie Rose Jr.
THREE OAKS, Mich. - Willie Rose Jr., 66, Three Oaks, formerly of Michigan City, died of natural causes at 1:25 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 11, 2003) at his home.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bethel AME Church, 629 E. Michigan Blvd., with the Rev. David Swarn officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, and from 10 a.m. until the service Wednesday at the church.
He was born March 10, 1937, in Michigan City, to Willie and Sarah (Moore) Rose Sr. On Aug. 11, 1995, in Three Oaks, he married Michell Baker, who survives.
Survivors also include two daughters, Tammy (Harold) Kennedy, Goshen, Ind., and Katrina Rose, Michigan City; eight sons, Brad Rose, Eric (Cherie) Rose, Keith (Kim) Rose, Mark Rose and Mitchell Rose, all of Michigan City, Jayden Rose, Three Oaks, Michael "Scoobie" (Lisa) Rose, Pittsburgh, Calif., and William (Angela) Rose, South Bend, Ind.; two sisters, Mercedes Rose and Manette Williams, both of Michigan City; 23 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Preceding Mr. Rose in death were three sisters, Bennie Butler, Alice Rose and Bessie Watson; one brother, Curly Rose; and one grandson, Antwone Rose.
Mr. Rose was retired as an Indiana State Highway rest park attendant. He was a member of the Bethel AME Church, where he served as the choir director. He also was a member of the Reborn Gospel Singers and was the Gospel Choir Director for the Franklin AME Church, Niles, Mich.
Stella Bardauskas
NEW BUFFALO, Mich. - Stella B. Bardauskas, 83, New Buffalo, died at 7:30 p.m. EDT Thursday (Sept. 11, 2003) at her home.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. EDT Monday at St. Mary of the Lake Church, New Buffalo, with the Rev. James Morris officiating. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. EDT Sunday at Smith Funeral Home, and from 10 a.m. EDT until the service Monday at the church.
She was born March 14, 1920, in Lithuania. In June 1966, she married Joseph Bardauskas, who died in 2001.
Survivors include one daughter, Villia Juska, New Buffalo; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one brother, Vladas Daniliavichus.
Two sons, Chester and John Kacinas, also preceded Mrs. Bardauskas in death.
Michelle Metts
PORTER, Ind. - Michelle Ann Metts, 35, Porter, died at 4:40 a.m. Thursday (Sept. 11, 2003) at University of Chicago Hospital, Chicago.
The Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, LaPorte, with the Rev. Ted Nordquist officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday and from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Essling Funeral Home, LaPorte. The Rosary will be recited Monday.
She was born Jan. 16, 1968, in Garland, Texas, to Kenneth and Rose (Raab) Badough. Her mother survives in Garland. On July 27, 2002, in Michigan City, she married Arthur L. Metts, who survives in Porter.
Survivors also include two daughters, Wendy Metts, Rolling Prairie, and Ashlee Metts, Porter; two brothers, Donald L. Badough, Houston, and Daniel L. Badough, Dallas; and several nieces and nephews.
Her father, Deacon Kenneth R. Badough, preceded her in death.
Mrs. Metts was a reference librarian at Lake County Public Library in Merrillville, Ind. She was a graduate of University of North Texas, Texas, with a masters degree in library science. She also received a bachelor of science in recreational therapy form the University of North Texas. She was a member of Yost Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization, Porter.

Marjorie Summers
VALPARAISO - Marjorie Ann Summers, 60, Valparaiso, died Saturday (Sept. 13, 2003) at Methodist Hospital, Northlake Campus, Gary, Ind.
A graveside service is at 11 a.m. Friday at Chapel of Graceland Cemetery, Valparaiso, with the Rev. Kristine Graunke officiating. Cremation is planned. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at White-Love Funeral Home, Chesterton.
She was born Dec. 13, 1942, in Gary to Charles L. and Anna Lousie Meyette. Her mother survives in Valparaiso.
Survivors also include two sons, Mark Summers, Valparaiso, and Matthew L. (Camie Redman Jr.) Summers, Chesterton; one daughter, Marcia L. (Kevin) Bickner, Aurora, Ill.; two grandchildren, Andrew Summers, Valparaiso, and Amanda Summers, Muncie, Ind.; three brothers, Charles Meyette, Wimberly, Texas, Donald Meyette, El Cajon, Calif., and Richard Meyette, Tracy, Calif.; and one sister, Elaine Kirk, Minneapolis.
For 25 years, Mrs. Summers was a lab technician at Methodist Hospital, Northlake Campus. She was active in the Chesterton Jr. Women's Club and a member of Chesterton Ladies Investment Club.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Humane Society of the United States of America, the National Wildlife Federation or A.S.P.C.A.
James Thompson
Kaufman, Texas - James L. "Bubba" Thompson, 62, Kaufman, formerly of LaPorte, died at 7:30 a.m. Thursday (Sept. 11, 2003) in St. Louis.
The funeral is at noon Wednesday at Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte, with the Rev. David Young officiating. Cremation is planned. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 8 a.m. until the service Wednesday at the funeral home.
He was born Dec. 23, 1940, in LaPorte to Daniel and Florence (Jesse) Thompson. On Nov. 30, 1996, he married Pamela "Koda" Sieglinger, who survives.
Survivors also include five daughters, Kristina (Ryan) Miller, Nappanee, Ind., Katie Miser, Walkerton, Ind., Kari Sobasky and Kimberly Sobasky, both of North Liberty, Ind., and Pamela Stahly, New Carlisle; three sons, James (Linda) Thompson, Warsaw, Ind., Scott A. Thompson, LaPorte, and Joshua Gouker, North Liberty; one step-daughter, Tiffany Ray Ann Meadows, Michigan City, and a father-in-law Ray Pavlack, Kaufman.
He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Grace Miller, and one brother, Thomas (Annette) Thompson.
Mr. Thompson was an environmental water tester for Severn Trent Services for one year. He was a former member of St. John's Lutheran Church, LaPorte, and the Musician's Union in South Bend. He enjoyed fishing, playing dice, riding horses and was a former keyboard player for The One Night Stand Band.

Esther Pearson
Esther E. Pearson, 98, Michigan City, died at 6:10 p.m. Sunday (Sept. 14, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.
The funeral is at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, with burial in Pinhook Cemetery, LaPorte. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 9:30 a.m. until the service Thursday at the funeral chapel.
Mrs. Pearson was born Oct. 19, 1904, in Chicago to Phillip and Dora (Appleton) Stevens. On May 15, 1920, in Chicago, she married Robert W. Pearson Sr., who died Jan. 15, 1963.
Survivors include one son, Robert W. (Joan) Pearson Jr., Michigan City; one daughter, LaVerne (Andrew) Cheslock, Wadsworth, Ohio; 15 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and two daughters-in-law, Betty Pearson, LaPorte, and Patricia Pearson, Michigan City.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Blanche Vitale; two sons, Donald and Roger Pearson; one sister, Helen Sidenglance; two brothers, Frank and Phillip Stevens; one granddaughter, Diane Leslie; and one son-in-law, John Vitale.
Mrs. Pearson retired form Crosby Office Supply after 25 years as a saleswoman. She worked at the Kingsbury Ordinance Plant during World War II and as a saleswoman at Carstens and Sears Roebuck & Co.

William Finney
WESTVILLE - William Franklin Finney, 70, Westville, died Sunday (Sept. 14, 2003) in Valparaiso.
The funeral is at 10 a.m. Thursday at Newhard Funeral Home, Westville, with the Rev. John Sternaman officiating. Burial is in Graceland Cemetery, Valparaiso. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Finney was born Feb. 21, 1933, in Blytheville, Ark., to Sydney Augustus and Anna Mae (Burton) Finney. On Nov. 28, 1952, he married Barbara Gean, who survives.
Survivors also include one son, David (Laura) Finney, New Lenox, Ill.; two daughters, Deborah (Jim Gresham) Baxley, Westville, and Vonda (David) Rager, Westville; 15 grandchildren; one great-grandson; four sisters, Lavern Carmack, Sikeston, Mo., Mildred Brown, Brawley, Calif., Lillian Causey, Windfall, Ind., and Wanda Cochran, Sikeston; and one brother, Richard Finney, Windfall.
Mr. Finney was a tool-and-die setup man who worked for Borg and Beck, Chicago.
Harold Luchtman Jr.
ROUND LAKE BEACH, Ill. - Harold William Luchtman Jr., 82, Round Lake Beach, died at 2:45 a.m. Sunday (Sept. 14, 2003) at his home.
The funeral is at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Root Funeral Home, with burial in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. until the service Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Luchtman was born Oct. 24, 1920, in Michigan City to Harold William Sr. and Sylvia (Wozniak) Luchtman. On Jan. 20, 1951, in LaPorte, he married Eileen M. Bower, who survives in Round Lake Beach.
Survivors include two daughters, Nancy (Peter) Bell, Oregon, Ill., and Jayne Luchtman, Beloit, Ill.; four sons, Harold W. Luchtman III and Randall (Lilly) Luchtman, all of Hampshire, Ill., Stephen (Debbie) Luchtman, Clinton, Wis., and David (Josephine) Luchtman, Chicago; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
One sister, Jean Elizabeth Bower, preceded him in death.
Mr. Luchtman worked for many years at the City of Chicago Board of Health. He also was an accountant and real-estate broker. He was a World War II veteran who attended Loyola University in DePaul and Martial Law School.
Erwin Rosler
OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. - Erwin "Neil" Rosler, 74, Ocean Springs, died Wednesday (Sept. 10, 2003) in Ocean Springs.
The funeral was Sunday at Ocean Springs Chapel, Bradford O'Keefe Funeral Home.
He was born March 30, 1929, in Michigan City to Martin and Ellen (Mitchell) Rosler.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Shirley Rosler, Ocean Springs; two daughters, Celeste Entrekin, Ocean Springs, and Elizabeth Ainsworth, Tulsa, Okla.; two sons, Bruce Welch, Dallas, Texas, and Martin Welch, Grand Junction, Colo.; two sisters, Maryann Deiber, Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and Peggy King, Perry Ga.; 10 grandchildren, including one special grandson, Adam Smith; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
One sister, Frances Schine, preceded him in death.
Mr. Rosler was an Ocean Springs resident since 1966. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War and served on the USS O'Bannon. He retired as a machinist after 22 years at Litton Ship Systems in Pascagoula, Miss. He was a Baptist.

Lois Smith
NEW BUFFALO, Mich. - Lois M. Smith, 82, New Buffalo, died at 9 p.m. EDT Saturday (Sept. 13, 2003) at Lakeland Regional Hospital, St. Joseph, Mich.
The funeral is at 11 a.m. EDT Wednesday at St. Mary of the Lake Church, New Buffalo, with the Rev. James Morris officiating. Burial is in Forest Lawn, Three Oaks, Mich. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the scripture service at 6:30 p.m., at Smith Funeral Chapel, New Buffalo.
She was born Sept. 3, 1921, in West Lebanon, Ind., to Simon and Della (Clark) Haupt.
Survivors include one daughter, Sharon (Ronald) Schryer, St. Joseph; three sons, Michael (Denise) Smith, Granger, Ind., Dennis (Tammy) Smith, Three Oaks, and Donald Smith, Bridgman, Mich.; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Paul Haupt, Lafayette, Ind.
She was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.
Mrs. Smith was an office manager with New Buffalo Electric.
John Swanson
LONG BEACH - John R. Swanson, 62, Long Beach, died Friday (Sept. 12, 2003) at Carroll Woods Health and Rehabilitation Center following a brief illness.
Mr. Swanson's body will be donated to medical science, and immediate family will hold a small, private graveside ceremony. Carlisle Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
He was born in Crawfordsville, Ind., to Raymond E. and Lucille R. Swanson.
Survivors include four sons, Michael T. Swanson, El Paso, Texas, James R. Swanson, Westville, John E. Swanson, Okeana, Ohio, and Sgt. Ronald G. Swanson, Fort Hood, Texas; one daughter, Lori Persinger, College Corner, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; one brother, Robert B. Swanson II, Newport Beach, Calif.; one nephew and one niece; three great-grandnieces and nephew; and one maternal aunt, Elaine M. Runge, Long Beach.
The Swanson family moved to Michigan City in 1959, where Raymond and Lucille Swanson were instrumental in founding the Swanson Center, named in their honor.
Proud to be called "foundryman" for more than 30 years, Mr. Swanson was a mid-level manager at foundries throughout the Midwest and Southwest. He ended his career at Independent Steel Casting in New Buffalo, retiring in 1996. He graduated from Crawfordsville High School, where he played football. He attended Michigan State University, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He also was a member of the Crawfordsville Elks Lodge, LaPorte County Comprehensive Mental Health Society and several foundry organizations.

Dewana Maerz
LaPORTE - Dewana M. Maerz, 76, LaPorte, died at 3:58 p.m. Monday (Sept. 15, 2003) at Memorial Hospital, South Bend.
The funeral is at 11 a.m. Friday at Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte, with the Rev. Victor M. Frohne officiating. Burial is in Heckman Cemetery, LaPorte. Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and 8 a.m. until the service Friday at the funeral home.
She was born Nov. 23, 1926, in LaPorte to Carl Fred and Ida Ellen (Nickles) Jackson. On May 11, 1946, in LaPorte, she married Harold L. Maerz, who survives.
Survivors also include four daughters, Jeanne (John) Bennitt and Diana (Gregg) Henriott, both of LaPorte, Sandy (Jim) Galinowski and Pat (Glenn) Siddall, both of Michigan City; one son, James (Dona) Maerz, Michigan City; 12 grandchildren, Jennifer Bennitt, Tony (Stacy) Bennitt, Jeff (Sarah) Galinowski and Tim, Alisha and Ric Henriott, all of LaPorte, Greg (Marci) Galinowski, Lafayette, Ind., Amy, Shelley and Ryan Maerz and Michael (Keli) Siddall, all of Michigan City, and Becky Siddall, Crown Point, Ind.; five great-grandchildren; and three sisters-in-law, Arlene Jackson, Reno, Nev., Lila Krueger, New Buffalo, Mich., and Dorothy Maerz, LaPorte.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Beulah and Alice (Henry) Strojny; four brothers, Charles, Carl, Lester and Sylvester; and three children, son Michael Maerz and a set of twins.
Mrs. Maerz, a lifelong LaPorte-area resident, was a housewife. She worked at Fox Woolen Mills and the Athletic Shoe Factory before her marriage. She was a member of the DAV Auxiliary of Michigan City, bowled in several bowling leagues and the Senior Leagues in LaPorte.
Memorial contributions may be made to the DAV Post 23 in Michigan City.
Infant Erika Smelser
Infant Erika Maria Smelser, 2 months, Michigan City, died at 12:05 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 11, 2003) at the University of Chicago Hospital.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the Babyland section of Greenwood Cemetery. Root Funeral Home handled arrangements.
She was born July 10, 2003, to Chris and Beth (Lestage) Smelser, who survive in Michigan City.
Survivors also include her twin sister, Madison Smelser, at home; one brother, Jessie Smelser, at home; grandparents Rose Horn, LaPorte, Rowena (Charles) Meyer, LaPorte, and Robert Smelser, Michigan City; great-grandparents, Jessie Sampson, Manchester, Conn., and Charlene Shaw, LaPorte; four uncles, Brian Lestage Jr., Michael Handtke, Robert Sampson and Michael Ramp, all of Michigan City; two aunts, Renae Tawney and Jessica Ramp, both of Michigan City; and her Godmother, Mary Isenblatter.

Donna Watson
Donna M. Watson, 72, Michigan City, died at 3:15 a.m. Sunday (Sept. 14, 2003) at her home in Michigan City.
Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. Root Funeral Home handled arrangements.
Mrs. Watson was born in Pontiac, Mich., on May 11, 1931, to William and Dorothy Frederick.
Survivors include two daughters, Jenifer Watson, Michigan City, and Deanna Watson, Atlanta; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Bonnie (Richard) Lucas, Harbor Springs, Mich.
Preceding her in death was one son, Jack Watson.
Mrs. Watson was a retired fabric spreader from Jaymar Ruby and Michigan City Plastics.
Memorials maybe made to ALS Research or St. Anthony Hospice.
Gene Hutchins
Gene R. Hutchins, 74, Michigan City, died at 7:20 a.m. Wednesday (Sept. 17, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. John Hogan officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. until the service Friday at the funeral chapel.
He was born July 5, 1929, in Michigan City, to George and Leona (Carpenter) Hutchins. On Nov. 17, 1950, in Michigan City, he married Audrey Moon, who died Sept. 7, 1984.
Survivors include two sons, Dennis (Mary) Hutchins, Lawrenceburg, Ind., and Mark Hutchins; one daughter, Tina West, Michigan City; one sister, Phyllis Nicolai, Brookfield, Ill.; and four granddaughters, Amanda, Lisa, Regina and Tara.
Also preceding Mr. Hutchins in death was one sister, Mary Hutchins.
Mr. Hutchins retired as a machinist from Budd Co. in Gary.
