Larry Litchford Jr.
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - Larry J. Litchford Jr., 31, Srpingfield, formerly of Michigan City, died Tuesday (Sept. 16, 2003) at his home in Ohio.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Root Funeral Home, Michigan City, with the Rev. David Seifert officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Michigan City.
Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. until the service Saturday at the funeral home.
Mr. Litchford was born April 30, 1972, in Fort Meade, Md., to Larry J. (Judy) Litchford Sr., Michigan City, and Vicki Lundy Litchford, Bloomington, Calif.
Survivors also include one son, Ozzy Litchford, Defiance, Ohio; one daughter, Cheyanne Litchford, Defiance; two sisters, Lori Litchford, Bloomington, and Carrie (Steve) Dudek, Dallas; two brothers, Christopher Oberg, Trail Creek, and Andrew Oberg, Camp Pendelton, Calif.; and grandparents J.T. and Mary Litchford, Michigan City.
Mr. Litchford was a sales representative for Imperial Marketing.
He was a graduate of Owens College with a Surgical Tech degree. He enjoyed fishing and all sports.
Rebecca Wyse
Rebecca D. Wyse, 42, Michigan City, died at 4 p.m. Monday (Sept. 15, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.
The funeral will be at 6 p.m. Friday at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, with Gordon Wonsey officiating. Cremation will take place and the ashes will be interred privately in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at the funeral chapel.
She was born March 11, 1961, in Michigan City, to Leldon and Wanda (Sightes) Wyse. Her father preceded her in death.
Survivors include her mother, Wanda Wyse, Michigan City; three daughters, Ashlie and Alyssa Wyse, both of Michigan City, and Marissa Bowen, Michigan City; two sons, Joshua Wyse and Anthony Thomas, both of Michigan City; one sister, Ginger Hefner, Michigan City; four brothers, Freddy (Joan) Wyse, New Buffalo, Mich., Lonnie (Lucinda) Wyse, Michael Wyse, and Darrin (Heather) Wyse, all of Michigan City; two grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
One brother, Danny Wyse, also preceded her in death.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Rebecca Wyse family.
Edward Baldridge
LaPORTE - Edward H. Baldridge, 90, LaPorte, died at 7:30 a.m. Thursday (Sept. 18, 2003) at Fountain View Terrace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, LaPorte.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John Lutheran Church, with Pastor David M. Young officiating. Entombment will be in Swan Lake Mausoleum. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the service Tuesday at the church. Essling Funeral Home handled arrangements.
He was born Sept. 12, 1913, in Centralia, Ill., to Henry and Hannah (Gutzler) Baldridge. On June 27, 1936, in Chicago, he married Antoinette Nedza, who died March 2, 1993.
Survivors include three sons, Dale Baldridge, St. Joseph, Mich., Bruce Baldridge, Renton, Wash., and Kenneth (Claudia) Baldridge, Valparaiso; six grandchildren, Deborah Olvitt, Kathy Schaub, Christine, Philip, Thomas and Keri-Ann Baldridge; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Geraldine Reimers, Batavia, Ill.; one brother, Paul Baldridge, Appleton, Wis.; and several nieces and nephews.
Two brothers, Harold and Ralph Baldridge, preceded Mr. Baldridge in death.
Mr. Baldridge was an inventory clerk for 20 years at Howmet. A member of St. John Lutheran Church for more than 60 years, Mr. Baldridge also served as an usher and for one term was the president of the St. John's Aid Association for Lutherans. Mr. Baldridge was a charter member of the LaPorte Junior Chamber of Commerce. He was the secretary of Austenal Golf League and was a former member of the Beechwood Senior Men's Golf League. Mr. Baldridge also was a volunteer paper stuffer at the Herald-Argus for St. John's Lutheran Church, and he volunteered for Meals on Wheels.

Carol Matheny
VALPARAISO - Carol JoAnne Matheny, 68, Valparaiso, formerly of Winamac, Ind., died Thursday (Sept. 18, 2003) at VNA Hospice Center, Valparaiso.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Moeller Funeral Home, Valparaiso. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, Valparaiso. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
She was born Aug. 30, 1935, in Webb City, Mo., to Charles and Doris (Webster) Mayfield. Her father preceded her in death. She was married to Ralph Matheny, who preceded her in death.
Survivors include two daughters, Joyce (Joe) Shikany, Valparaiso, and Susan (David) Cominsky, Portage; one son, David (Chrissy) Brazil, Portage; her mother, Doris Mayfield, Winamac; one sister, Patricia Cardwell, Winamac; one brother, Charles Mayfield, Ohio; five grandchildren, Ryan and April Samuels, Jennifer and Joe Shikany and Kali Norfrey; four great-grandchildren, Shaylyn, Adam, Vanessa and Claire.
Also preceding Mrs. Matheny in death were one sister, Joyce Mayfield; and her granddaughter, Carol Baldwin.
Mrs. Matheny owned Skip's Drive In, which was located in Portage. She also worked as a quality control auditor for Jaymar Ruby in Michigan City.

Helen Novacek
THREE OAKS, Mich. - Helen Novacek, 93, Three Oaks, died Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 17, 2003).
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. EDT Monday at Pobocik Funeral Home Connelly-Noble Chapel, Three Oaks. Interment will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery, New Buffalo, Mich. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. EDT Sunday at the funeral home.
Helen, and her twin, Ellen, were born Oct. 6, 1909, at the family farm in Three Oaks to Joseph and Belle (Glossinger) Novacek. She attended Basswood School and worked, along with her parents and five siblings, on the family's fruit farm. Helen and her family grew apples, grapes, berries and vegetables. They took their produce to the Benton Harbor Fruit Exchange, and later, sold to grocery stores in Indiana and Illinois.
Her family owned Novacek's Grocery Store on Red Arrow Highway in Union Pier at one time, which kept them busy, as well as operating a milk delivery service. Helen enjoyed going to dances on Saturday nights, frequenting Prusia's in Union Pier. She collected Indian arrowheads and liked playing Bunco and spending time with family. Helen and her sister, Ellen, tended a beautiful one-acre garden at the family home they continued to share after retiring from farming.
Survivors include her sister, Ellen Novacek, Three Oaks; her nine nieces and nephews, Patricia Peterek, Harbert, Mich.; Nancy Garvey, Schererville, Ind.; Joseph Novacek, Union Pier; Richard Novacek, Lakeside, Mich.; Daryl Sullivan, New Prairie; James Waaso, Asheville, N.C.; Susan Armstrong, Highland, Mich.; Jerry Novacek, Union Pier; and Candy Freehling, Sawyer, Mich.; 16 great-nieces and nephews; and 13 great-great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Bessie Waaso, and brothers, Charles, Anton and Jess.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
Janet Stromyer
LaPORTE - Mrs. Janet Kay Stromyer, 49, LaPorte, died at 12:05 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 18, 2003) at LaPorte Hospital.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Haverstock Funeral Home in LaPorte, with the Rev. Rodney Nielsen officiating. Burial will be in Patton Cemetery.
Friends may call from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday and from 8 a.m. until the service Monday.
Mrs. Stromyer was born Sept. 19, 1953, in LaPorte to Raymond and Ann Barnes. On Aug. 18, 1984, in LaPorte, she married Jerry Stromyer, who survives in LaPorte.
Also surviving are one daughter, Michelle (Jerry) Riston, Greenville, Pa.; three sons, Jerry Stromyer, Jr., Walkerton, Dan Stromyer and Charles (Chris) Glenn, both of LaPorte; 11 grandchildren and one brother, Gary Barnes, LaPorte.
She was the CEO of J. Kay Trucking for seven years and was a member of Agape Christian Church.

Rodney Knight, Jr.
Rodney L. Knight, Jr., 10, Michigan City, died at 5:40 p.m. Friday (Sept. 19, 2003) at Parkview Huntington Hospital in Huntington, Ind., of natural causes.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Howard Daniel officiating. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the service. Cremation will follow and ashes will be interred privately at Greenwood Cemetery.
Rodney was born Feb. 3, 1993, in Michigan City to Rodney L. Knight, Sr. and Hope Sheffield, who survive in Michigan City.
Also surviving are two sisters, Kierra Leonard, Michigan City, and Cayla Leonard, Buford, Ga.; two brothers, Marcus Sheffield and Bryant Rhodes, both of Michigan City; grandparents Icue (Ronnie) Williams and Larry Sheffield; special father Brian Rhodes and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his great-grandparents, Catherine Simmons and Raymond Simmons.
Virginia Sischo
Virginia L. Sischo, 71, Michigan City, died Saturday (September 20, 2003) at VNA-Hospice in Valparaiso.
Cremation will take place with private family burial at a later date. Root Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
Mrs. Sischo was born February 23, 1932, in Princeton, Ind., to Charles and Alice (Booker) Smith. In 1948, in Princeton, Ind., she married Charles Stott, who preceded her in death. In 1974, in New Buffalo, Mich., she married Grover Sischo, who also preceded her in death.
Surviving are two daughters, Caryn (Fred) Dougherty, LaPorte, and Cheryl (Tom) Corbett, Ozark, Ark.; four grandchildren, Mark (Chris) Dougherty, Mill Creek, Ind., Michelle (Scott) Cooley, Michigan City, LeAndria Corbett, Ozark, and Jason Corbett, Wynne, Ark.; three great-grandchildren, Arianna, Aleea and Gage; and one brother, Gene Booker, Portage, Ind.
Mrs. Sischo was retired from Royal Metal in Michigan City and retired in 1991 from Wal-Mart in Michigan City.
Mrs. Sischo loved to read, knit and crochet.
Memorials maybe made to the VNA-Hospice in Valparaiso.
Linda Murphy
Linda Marie Murphy, 51, Michigan City, died at 3 a.m. Tuesday (Sept. 16, 2003) unexpectedly at her home.
The funeral will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Michigan City, with the Rev. James McGrogan officiating. Cremation will follow the service and the ashes interred privately in Greenwood Cemetery, Michigan City.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until the service Sunday at the funeral chapel.
Ms. Murphy was born Oct. 23, 1951, in Michigan City to Joseph P. and Maureen (O'Neill) Murphy. Her parents preceded her in death.
Survivors include two sisters, Nancy (Percy) Doughty, Hobart, Ind., and Patricia Murphy, Michigan City; a special aunt, Sheila O'Neill, Michigan City; and two nieces, Kaitlyn and Megan Doughty, Hobart.
Ms. Murphy was a Class of 1969 Marquette High School graduate and also a graduate from Purdue University School of Nursing. She was a registered nurse with the Porter County Jail in Valparaiso, Ind.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Richard Werdin Jr.
OAK ISLAND, N.C. - Richard Lee Werdin Jr., 47, Oak Island, died Wednesday (Sept. 17, 2003) at Duke University Medical Center.
He was born March 23, 1956, in Michigan City, to Richard Lee and Shirley (White) Werdin Sr. He married Kelly Webb 13 years ago, who survives.
Survivors also include his father, Richard Lee Werdin Sr.; his mother, Jerrie Werdin; one son, David Ryan Werdin, Spartanburg, S.C.; one daughter, Hollie Gibson, Concord, N.C.; one sister, Donna Mishler; two brothers, Danny and Mike Stachowiak; and one grandchild, Jacob Ryan Werdin.
Mr. Werdin moved to Oak Island from Concord, N.C., in 1997. He loved music, reading and was a very caring husband and father.

Mildred Coar
Mildred E. Coar, 91, Michigan City, died at 10:30 p.m. Saturday (Sept. 20, 2003) at Michigan City Health Care Center.
A private service and visitation are planned. Burial is in Greenwood Cemetery. Carlisle Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Mrs. Coar was born Oct. 25, 1911, in Michigan City to George and Margaret (Kramer) Helmken. On March 24, 1928, in Michigan City, she married Joseph Coar, who died in 1989.
Surviving are two sons, William (Marlene) Coar, New Buffalo, Mich., and Joseph (Betty) Coar, LaPorte; two daughters, Marlene (Wayne) Strang, LaPorte, and Sally (Lee) Timm, Trail Creek; five grandsons, three granddaughters; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Patrick Coar and Joseph Coar Jr., two brothers, William and Harold Helmken; and a sister, Helen Bielski.
A homemaker, Mrs. Coar was a St. Paul Lutheran Church member.

Timothy Harshman
ROLLING PRAIRIE - Timothy K. Harshman, 34, Rolling Prairie, died at 8:30 p.m. Friday (Sept. 19, 2003) in LaPorte.
The funeral is at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte, with the Rev. Jerry Stegall officiating. Burial is in Rolling Prairie Cemetery. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 8 a.m. until the service Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Harshman was born July 5, 1969, in LaPorte, to Jack and Pamela (Miser) Harshman. His father survives in Rolling Prairie and his mother in New Carlisle. On Nov. 30, 1987, in LaPorte, he married Melissa Ryans, who survives in Rolling Prairie.
Survivors also include two daughters, Brandi Harshman and Larissa Harshman, New Carlisle; one brother, Todd (Melanie) Harshman, Lancaster, Pa.; one sister, Traci (Beau) Mbu, Rolling Prairie; maternal grandmother, Katheryne Harness, LaPorte; paternal grandmother, Anna Harshman, LaPorte; a special friend, Vicki Williams, LaPorte.
He was preceded in death by a maternal grandfather, Lloyd Miser, maternal step-grandfather, Ralph Harness, and paternal grandfather, LeBert Harshman.
Mr. Harshman, who lived most of his life in Rolling Prairie, was a bricklayer and tuck pointer with Local 52. He underwent basic training at Camp Pendleton, San Diego, and served his country in the Gulf War, having been a U.S. Marine corporal from 1988 to 1992. He liked working on cars and trucks and enjoyed camping and fishing with his father.

Donald King
Donald L. King, 76, Michigan City, died at 10:15 p.m. Sunday (Sept. 14, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.
A memorial service is at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Carlisle Funeral Home. Cremation will take place.
Mr. King was born Jan. 4, 1927, in Byesville, Ohio, to Earl and Gertrude Mae (Hutton) King. On April 30, 1954, in Wheeling, W. Va., he married Martha Ann Trubee, who died Jan. 11, 1982.
Surviving are one daughter, Barbara "Sue" Murray, Michigan City; one grandson, Robert Gubbine, Sandy, Utah; one brother, Gilbert (Martha Rose) King, Greenup, Ky.; two sisters, Pauline (George) Aleshire and Carol Collins, both of Byesville.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Clarence, Vernon and Teddy King, and one sister, Geneva King.
Mr. King was the franchise owner of the Clark gas station on Michigan Boulevard during the 1960s. He also worked as an office-machine repairman for Kills Office Machines and Jaymar Ruby. A World War II veteran, he served with the Army in Panama. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars in Michigan City.

Arnold Schwenk
LaPORTE - Arnold L. "Pat" Schwenk, 88, LaPorte, died Thursday (Sept. 18, 2003) at Regional Hospital, Terre Haute, Ind.
The funeral is at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte, with the Rev. Ronald Metzger officiating. Burial is in Patton Cemetery. Visitation is from 10 a.m. until the service Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Schwenk was born Sept. 7, 1915, in Ireland, Ind., to Othmar and Katherine (Hopf) Schwenk. On Sept. 8, 1936, in Owensboro, Ky., he married Ruth Pannett, who died on June 6, 1993.
Surviving are one daughter, Patricia (Ronald) Metzger, Elk River, Minn.; two sons, Richard (Nancy) Schwenk, Terre Haute, and Wilford (Betty) Schwenk, Fort Wayne; four sisters, Marie Faith, Jasper, Ind., Millie (William) Heckman, Louisville, Ky., Loucille Schmidt and Henrietta (Tom) Vollmer, both of Jasper; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister.
Mr. Schwenk was a supervisor at Kingsley Furniture for 30 years. He retired in 1980.

Russell Spier
LaPORTE - Russell Spier, 81, LaPorte, died May 22, 2003, at his home.
A memorial service is at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Greenwood Cemetery, with the Rev. David Seifert officiating. The body has been cremated, and the cremains will be buried at Greenwood Cemetery. Carlisle Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Mr. Spier was born Aug. 27, 1921, to George and Elsie (Barthel) Spier. On Aug. 15, 1953, in Michigan City, he married Myrtle, who died July 30, 1999.
Surviving are cousins, Wilmetta, Angelina and William Spier, Genevieve Barthel Simcox, Margaret Barthel VanDine and Arlene Nulf, all of LaPorte, Beverly Barthel Noel, Walkerton, Robert Barthel, South Bend, and Winifred Studabaker, Lake Wales, Fla.
Mr. Spier was a farmer who also worked as a carpenter for Modine's. A World War II veteran, he served in the Navy.

Sylvia Suberlak
SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - Sylvia Suberlak, 66, Schaumburg, died Tuesday (Sept. 16, 2003) in Schaumburg.
The Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. EDT Thursday at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Three Oaks, Mich., with the Rev. Donald Suberlak officiating. Burial is in St. John Kanty Cemetery, Rolling Prairie. There is no visitation. Pobocik Funeral Home Connelly-Noble Chapel, Three Oaks, is handling the arrangements.
Mrs. Suberlak was born Jan. 2, 1937, in Monte Vista, Colo., to Nick and Irene Traxler.
Surviving are her husband, Kenneth Suberlak, Schaumburg; one son, Toby Suberlak, Hanover Park, Ill.; siblings, Keith, Thelma Koziel, Robert, Harold, John and Zelda; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Wayne and James.
