Sarah Bennett
LaPORTE -- Sarah M. Bennett, 82, LaPorte, died at 12:40 a.m. Saturday (Sept. 27, 2003) at her home in LaPorte.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, LaPorte, with the Rev. Jamie Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Patton Cemetery, LaPorte.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte, and from 9 a.m. until the service Thursday at the church.
Mrs. Bennett was born Aug. 18, 1921, in Detroit to John and Alice (Knowles) Taylor.
Survivors include one daughter, Bonnie (James) Purcell, LaPorte; one son, John (Debbie) Bennett, Lakeland, Fla.; three grandsons, Joseph Bennett, Valparaiso, Leonard Fredenberg, Lakeland, and Brian (Dana) Purcell, Westville; three granddaughters, Sandra Bennett, Lakeland, Kimberly (Jeremy) Blake, LaPorte, and Katie (Clint) Fulford, Wanatah; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister.
Mrs. Bennett lived in LaPorte since 1967, coming from Florida. She was a lab technician for 19 years at TP Laboratories, retiring in 1990.
She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, LaPorte, and a volunteer at LaPorte Hospital.
Memorials may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church or to the VNA Hospice.
Frieda Volk
WESTVILLE -- Frieda F. Volk, 89, Westville, died at 9:30 p.m. Friday (Sept. 26, 2003) at Valparaiso Care and Rehabilitation Center.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Carlisle Funeral Home, with the Rev. David Seifert officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
She was born April 2, 1914, in Hobart, to Christopher and Martha (Mielke) Vullmahn. On Nov. 26, 1938, in Gary, she married Sylvester F. Volk, who survives in Westville. They enjoyed 64 years of marriage.
Survivors also include two daughters, Donna Glossenger, Michigan City, and Karen Shepherd, Hamlet, Ind.; two grandchildren, Anne (Tom) Lindstrom, Lexington, Ky., and Steven Glossenger, Michigan City; and one great-granddaughter, Melissa Dingman, Lafayette, Ind.
Preceding Mrs. Volk in death were three brothers and two sisters.
Mrs. Volk was a homemaker who loved to spend time with her family. She also enjoyed her beautiful flowers.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family.
Sylvester Cermak
OAK BROOK, Ill. -- Sylvester Frank Cermak, 85, Oak Brook, died Sunday (Sept. 28, 2003) at his home.
The funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Mayslake Chapel, 1801 35th St., Oak Brook. Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. until the service Wednesday in the chapel.
He was born Dec. 20, 1917. On May 17, 1941, in Chicago, he married Irene Zelenka, who survives in Oak Brook.
Survivors also include two sons, Ray (Edna) Cermak, Michigan City, and Randall (Janet) Cermak, Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; two daughters, Diane Marsden, Glen Ellyn, Ill., and Susan (Charles) Simmonds, Justice, Ill.; one sister, Irene (Arthur) Malew, Medinah, Ill.; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Robert Gallant Jr.
Robert E. "Bob" Gallant Jr., 45, Michigan City, died at 11:25 p.m. Sunday (Sept. 28, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Carlisle Funeral Home. Cremation will take place with burial of the ashes at Pinhook Cemetery at a later date.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the service Wednesday at the funeral home.
He was born Jan. 21, 1958, in Defiance, Ohio, to Robert E. "Gene" and Eileen M. (Bish) Gallant Sr., who survive in Michigan City.
Survivors also include one daughter, Charlene Eileen Gallant; one son, Mathew Robert Gallant, W. St. Paul, Minn.; three sisters, Teresa Knotts, Sharon (Gary) Lowry and Jyll Gallant, all of Michigan City; one brother, Richard (Jeannie) Gallant, Michigan City; many nieces and nephews; and dear friend Harriet Lutchman.
One sister, Dena Williamson, preceded Mr. Gallant in death in 1990.
Mr. Gallant was formerly employed by Midland Grocery. He served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Gallant enjoyed learning. His future was either to be involved in medicine or counseling.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family.
Julian Groch
CHICAGO -- Julian P. Groch, 79, Chicago, died Friday (Sept. 26, 2003) at Rush Presbyterian St. Lukes Hospital, Chicago.
The funeral will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday from Foran Funeral Home, 7300 W. Archer Ave. (55th St., just west of Harlem Avenue) to St. Joseph Church, with Mass celebrated at 10 a.m. Entombment will be in Resurrection Garden Mausoleum. He was born Nov. 21, 1923. He married Rose Trhlik, who preceded him in death.
Survivors include one son, David Groch; two grandchildren, Carolyn (William Paul) Rodgers and Paul John Groch; one brother, Alphonese (Dolores) Groch; one sister, Dolores Bogenski; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Also preceding Mr. Groch in death were one son, Mark (Enid) Groch; and many other brothers and sisters.
Mr. Groch was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in World War II.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
Frank Pradziad
Frank J. Pradziad, 82, Michigan City, died at 7:50 a.m. Monday (Sept. 29, 2003) at Michigan City Health Care Center.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Root Funeral Home, with the Rev. David Matevia officiating. Burial will be in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens with John Franklin Miller American Legion Post 37 conducting graveside memorial services.
Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the Root Funeral Home.
Mr. Pradziad was born Oct. 21, 1920, in Chicago to Andrew Pradziad and Bernice Panszczyk Pradziad Topa. On Sept. 9, 1945, in Michigan City, he married Betty J. Jones, who survives in Michigan City.
Also surviving is one daughter, Alice (Jerry) Yacullo, LaPorte; two grandsons, Anthony and Michael Yacullo, both of LaPorte; one brother, Bruno Pradziad, Michigan City; and three nephews, David Pradziad, Michigan City, Mark Pradziad, Otis, and Edward Pradziad, Florida.
Preceding him in death were his stepfather, John Topa, and one nephew, Andrew Pradziad.
Mr. Pradziad retired as a mechanic at American Cyanamid after 31 years of service. Mr. Pradziad was a member of John Franklin Miller American Legion Post 37 and at one time was a member of its honor guard. Mr. Pradziad was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He was a loving husband and father, a loyal Cubs fan and a very hard worker.
Lawrence Anderson
CHESTERTON -- The Rev. Lawrence S. Anderson, 85, Chesterton, died Saturday (Sept. 27, 2003).
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Ronald Larson officiating. Entombment will be in Graceland Cemetery, Valparaiso. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at White Love Funeral Home.
He was born and raised in the Valparaiso area. He married Jennie Nicholson, who died in 1997.
Survivors include three sons, Richard (Vickie) Anderson, Portland, Ore., Paul (Susan) Anderson, Rochester, Minn., and Philip (Barbara) Anderson, Valparaiso; one daughter, Mary Anderson, Wheaton, Ill.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Olga Korthals and Mary Obermeier; and one brother, John Anderson.
Three brothers, Carl, Douglas and William, also preceded him in death.
The Rev. Anderson was an Army Air Force veteran, having served in the China, Burma, India Theater during World War II. He graduated from Valparaiso University and Augustana Seminary in Rock Island, Ill.
After being a Lutheran pastor for 31 years, with parishes in Stratford, Iowa, and Prophetstown, Ill., he retired in 1983 and returned to Chesterton. While a pastor in Illinois, he was a national board member of Good Samaritan Society Nursing Homes, on committees to establish Sauk Valley College, and a board member of Winning Wheels Inc. Due to his many contributions to the community throughout the years, he was listed in the Dictionary On International Biography, Cambridge and London, England, and in the Who's Who's in the Midwest twice.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Bethlehem Lutheran Church building fund, 2050 W. 1100 N., Chesterton, IN 46304.
Judge Taylor Jr.
Judge T. Taylor Jr., 81, Michigan City, died at 8:21 a.m. Friday (Sept. 26, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers, Michigan City.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Bethel A.M.E. Church, with Pastor David Swarn officiating. Burial will be in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens, Michigan City. Coleman-Williams & Hicks Funeral Home, Michigan City, handled the arrangements.
Mr. Taylor was born May 26, 1922, in Americus, Ga., to Judge T. Sr. and Carrie B. (Jackson) Taylor. On Feb. 4, 1947, in Michigan City, he married Constance Middleton, who survives.
Survivors also include one son, Daniel (Rosalind) Taylor, Pittsburgh; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one goddaughter.
He was preceded in death by two sons, one daughter, and two sisters.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He retired from Weil-McLain as a molder after 45 years of service. He also worked at Franklin Pharmacy in the delivery department for 10 years.
Mr. Taylor moved to Michigan City from New Buffalo, Mich., in 1947. He was a member and head usher at Bethel AME.
Cecelia Bentley
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. -- Cecelia Bridget Bentley, 79, recently of Prescott Valley and New Mexico, formerly of Chesterton, died Thursday (Sept. 25, 2003) in Yavapai Regional Medical Center, Prescott.
The funeral is at 11 a.m. Saturday at White-Love Funeral Home, Chesterton, with the Rev. Ian Williams officiating. Burial is in St. Patrick Cemetery, Chesterton. Visitation is from 9 a.m. until the service Saturday at the funeral home.
She was born March 23, 1924, in Chesterton to James and Margaret (Maroney) Earley. On March 21, 1945, she married Harold S. Bentley, who died in February 1998.
Survivors include three sons, Larry and Steve Bentley, Prescott Valley, and Brian Bentley, Phoenix; one daughter, Darleen (Rodger) Pannell, Waynesboro, Va.; many grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and three sisters, Mary L. (Norman E.) Christensen, Chesterton, Patricia Jarka, Aurora, Colo., and Kathleen (Norman) Nicholson, Michigan City.
She was preceded in death by five brothers, Martin, Dennis, James, Paul and John Paul; and one sister, Margaret Butler.
Mrs. Bentley was a homemaker.
