Murlo Cole
Murlo S. Cole, 84, Michigan City, died at 5:55 a.m. Sunday (Sept. 28, 2003) at Carroll Woods Health Center, Michigan City.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church of Lakeland in Michigan City, with the Rev. Howard Daniel officiating. Burial will be in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens, Michigan City.
Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Coleman-Williams & Hicks Funeral Home, Michigan City.
Mrs. Cole was born in Plummerville, Ark., to Wilton and Ortha (Byson) Moore. She married Percy Cole, who died in November 1987.
Survivors include one son, Sam White, Michigan City; three daughters, Eartha (Paul) Hurt, Michigan City, Murlo (Fred) Washington, Dayton, Ohio, and Bertha Cole, Chicago; 14 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; a special niece, Esther Davis, Michigan City; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by one sister.
Mrs. Cole moved here 55 years ago from West Memphis, Ark., and was housekeeper at Walter's Hospital.
She was a member and nurse at First Baptist Church of Lakeland.
Lillian Fox
Lillian M. Fox, 75, Michigan City, died at 3:25 p.m. Monday (Sept. 29, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.
The funeral is at 11 a.m. Friday at St. John's United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Victoria Smith officiating. Burial is in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Carlisle Funeral Home.
She was born Nov. 10, 1927, in Michigan City to Henry H. and Bessie Viola (Fisk) Bethke. On May 30, 1959, in Michigan City, she married William H. Fox, who survives.
Survivors also include four sons, Robert E. Lewis, Westville, and Barry A., Richard J. and Danny L. (Sally) Lewis, all of Michigan City; four daughters, Sharon K. Lindenmeyer, Darlene M. Morales and Judith A. (David) Robbins, all of Michigan City, and Bonnie J. Lewis, Chesterton; 35 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Patricia L. (Robert) Gross, Texas.
Mrs. Fox was a homemaker. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, as well as camping, reading and music.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
Lorraine Lory
LaPORTE -- Lorraine Lory, 80, LaPorte, died at 4 a.m. Tuesday (Sept. 30, 2003) at her home.
The funeral is at 11 a.m. Thursday at Cutler Funeral Home, LaPorte, with the Rev. David Tripp officiating. Burial is in Rolling Prairie Cemetery. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. until the services Thursday at the funeral home.
She was born Aug. 31, 1923, in LaPorte County to Ben and Martha (Peters) Povolock. On May 5, 1951, in LaPorte, she married Samuel J. Lory, who died June 30, 1977.
Survivors include one stepdaughter, Marian (James) Geppert, Glenview, Ill.; two grandchildren; one nephew and one niece; and a friend and special caregiver, Dennis Magley, LaPorte.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence and Ralph Povolock.
Mrs. Lory worked for 51 years for the LaPorte County Welfare Department. She was a graduate of Rolling Prairie High School and LaPorte Business College. She also was a Rolling Prairie United Methodist Church member.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
Arthur McIntosh III
POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- Arthur Robert "Mac" McIntosh III, 54, Poplar Bluff, died Sept. 19, 2003, at the John J. Pershing Veterans Administration Medical Center, where he was awaiting a liver transplant.
A memorial service was held Sept. 25 at the home of his daughter, Christina Schwartz, in Poplar Bluff. Cotrell Funeral Service handled arrangements.
He was born Nov. 29, 1948, in Marion, Ind., to Arthur Robert and Mary (Truex) McIntosh Jr., who preceded him in death.
Survivors include his stepfather, James T. Brooks Sr., Michigan City; one son, Arthur Robert McIntosh IV, Poplar Bluff; two daughters, Heather Case and Christina Schwartz, both of Poplar Bluff; eight grandchildren; four sisters, Sherrill Pendley, Marion, Ind., Karen Pendley, Rochester, Ind., Betty McIntosh, New Carlisle, and Jamie (David) Davis, Michigan City; four brothers, Meredith (Evelyn) Pendley, Rochester, Ind., Richard (Peggy) McIntosh, LaPorte, Dennis (Judy) Holcom, Sweetser, Ind., and James (Dina) Brooks, Michigan City.
His twin sister, Rebecca Vandevender, preceded him in death.
Mr. McIntosh was a welder for many years. He had lived in Michigan City, Gary and Jacksonville, Fla., before moving to Poplar Bluff. He was of the Catholic faith. A disabled Vietnam veteran, Mr. McIntosh served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal and received the Purple Heart. Mr. McIntosh enjoyed hiking and canoeing.
Marian Miller
Marian L. Miller, 83, Michigan City, died at 5:50 a.m. Monday (Sept. 29, 2003) at Life Care Center of Michigan City.
The funeral will be Thursday at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Otis, with the Rev. David Werner officiating. Burial will follow in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens, Michigan City.
Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Michigan City, and from 10 a.m. until the service Thursday at the church in Otis.
Mrs. Miller was born May 27, 1920, in Michigan City to Theodore and Anna (Dietz) Herrbach. On Dec. 31, 1940, in Michigan City, she married Ralph H. Miller, who was killed in action in Belgium on Nov. 18, 1944. On Nov. 23, 1951, in Michigan City, she married William H. Miller, who died April 10, 1963.
Survivors include one son, James H. Miller, Michigan City; two daughters, Barbara Miller, San Francisco, and Sandra L. (Tom) Pauley, Lebanon, Ind.; one granddaughter, Diana Pauley, Lebanon; one grandson, Matthew Pauley, Lebanon; one sister, Janet Pizarek, LaPorte; and one brother, Elmer Herrbach, Altamonte Springs, Fla.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank and Walter Herrbach.
She was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Otis, the Coolspring Township Farm Bureau and the Terra Verde Garden Club.
Mrs. Miller was a longtime volunteer for the American Red Cross. She was a generous person who always had a cheerful word, friendly note or a baked goodie for anyone in need. She loved people and everyone enjoyed her wonderful cooking. Her greatest pleasure was working in her beloved garden. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Memorials may be made to the St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church of Otis.
Helen Skalicky
LaPORTE -- Helen E. Skalicky, 89, LaPorte, died at 3:15 p.m. Sunday (Sept. 28, 2003) at LaPorte Hospital.
A private family graveside service will be in Patton Cemetery, with Pastor Michael Wands officiating. There will be no visitation. Essling Funeral Home handled arrangements.
She was born Dec. 10, 1913, in Cleveland, Tenn., to William and Hazel (Bryant) Brewer. In January 1931, in LaPorte, she married Wayne Fulford, who died Oct. 26, 1981. On March 18, 1989, in LaPorte, she married Leon Skalicky, who died Sept. 11, 2000.
Survivors include two daughters, Pat (John) Schroll and Libby (Don) Edmond, both of Michigan City; one stepson, Wayne (Lynn) Fulford, LaPorte; one stepdaughter, Lois Skalicky, Carson, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Taylor and Jordan Brenneman, Drake Edmond, John and Timothy Eldridge, Ellen Childers and Jamie Fulford; two step-grandchildren, Angela and Vicky Fulford; 11 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mabel Dee, LaPorte; one brother, William Brewer, Spring Lake, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews.
Also preceding Mrs. Skalicky in death were one daughter, Amy Fulford; one grandson, David Eldridge; and two sisters, Dessie Levendoski and Ruth Gardner.
Mrs. Skalicky was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Christian Church and the women's prayer group. Mrs. Skalicky also was a LaPorte Lionettes Member.

Frieda Volk
WESTVILLE -- Frieda F. Volk, 89, Westville, died at 9:30 p.m. Friday (Sept. 26, 2003) at Valparaiso Care and Rehabilitation Center.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Carlisle Funeral Home, with the Rev. David Seifert officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
She was born April 2, 1914, in Hobart, to Christopher and Martha (Mielke) Vullmahn. On Nov. 26, 1938, in Gary, she married Sylvester F. Volk, who survives in Westville. They enjoyed 64 years of marriage.
Survivors also include two daughters, Donna Glossenger, Michigan City, and Karen Shepherd, Hamlet, Ind.; two grandchildren, Anne (Tom) Lindstrom, Lexington, Ky., and Steven Glossenger, Michigan City; and one great-granddaughter, Melissa Dingman, Lafayette, Ind.
Preceding Mrs. Volk in death were three brothers and two sisters.
Mrs. Volk was a homemaker who loved to spend time with her family. She also enjoyed her beautiful flowers.

Sarah Bennett
LaPORTE -- Sarah M. Bennett, 82, LaPorte, died at 12:40 a.m. Saturday (Sept. 27, 2003) at her home in LaPorte.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, LaPorte, with the Rev. Jamie Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Patton Cemetery, LaPorte.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte, and from 9 a.m. until the service Thursday at the church.
Mrs. Bennett was born Aug. 18, 1921, in Detroit to John and Alice (Knowles) Taylor.
Survivors include one daughter, Bonnie (James) Purcell, LaPorte; one son, John (Debbie) Bennett, Lakeland, Fla.; three grandsons, Joseph Bennett, Valparaiso, Leonard Fredenberg, Lakeland, and Brian (Dana) Purcell, Westville; three granddaughters, Sandra Bennett, Lakeland, Kimberly (Jeremy) Blake, LaPorte, and Katie (Clint) Fulford, Wanatah; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister.
Mrs. Bennett lived in LaPorte since 1967, coming from Florida. She was a lab technician for 19 years at TP Laboratories, retiring in 1990.
She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, LaPorte, and a volunteer at LaPorte Hospital.
Memorials may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church or to the VNA Hospice.
Merle Prascak
Merle Allen Prascak, 60, LaPorte, died at 9:45 a.m. Friday (Sept. 26, 2003) at Carroll Woods Health and Rehabilitation Center, Michigan City.
A private family service will be held. Cremation has taken place.
Mr. Prascak was born Sept. 11, 1943, in Rensselaer, Ind., to Michael and Martha (Halstead) Prascak Sr. On April 1, 1999, he married Barbara Janke Newman, who survives.
Survivors also include one son, Merle (Amanda) Prascak Jr., Rockford, Ill.; one granddaughter, Zoe Eula Prascak; two sisters, Beverly (Greg) Szybala, LaPorte, and Tandra (David) Robinson, Valparaiso; and two brothers, Michael Prascak Jr., LaPorte, and John (Jo Ann) Prascak, Charlotte, N.C.
Mr. Prascak was a U.S. Army veteran, serving as a sharpshooter during the Vietnam War.
Theresa Hensell
Theresa A. Hensell, 90, Walkerton, formerly of LaPorte, died at 3:05 a.m. Saturday (Sept. 27, 2003) at Miller's Mary Manor, Walkerton.
A Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, LaPorte, with the Rev. Gerald A. Sroka officiating. Burial will take place in St. Stanislaus Catholic Cemetery following the service.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Essling Funeral Home. A prayer service will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Hensell was born Feb. 13, 1913, in Michigan City, to Joseph and Rose (Beschinski) Woods. On May 18, 1957, in Logansport, Ind., she married Roscoe W. Hensell, who preceded her in death on Aug. 15, 1975.
Survivors include two daughters, Marlene Bennett, Terre Haute, Ind., and Joyce Lile, Hamlet, Ind.; one son, Dennis Freese, LaPorte; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Wagner, Theodora Schomacker and Lucille Hauskins, and one brother, Eugene Woods.
Mrs. Hensell had been a waitress at Mary's Restaurant in LaPorte. She was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Memorials may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Benjamin Wilson, Sr.
LaPORTE -- Benjamin W. Wilson, Sr., 62, LaPorte, died at 10:08 p.m. Friday (Sept. 26, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Haverstock Funeral Home, with Rev. Victor Prietto officiating. Burial will be in Chesterton Cemetery.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and from 8 a.m. until the service Tuesday.
Mr. Wilson was born Feb. 10, 1941, in Michigan City, to Henry Franklin and Minnie L. (Hays) Wilson. On Sept. 18, 1962, in LaPorte, he married Betty Frame, who survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Deborah L. Mills, LaPorte, Jennie M. (John) Mullens, Michigan City, and Kimberly J. (Gordon) Teall, Aransas Pass, Texas; four sons, Benjamin (Terri) Wilson, Jr., and Timothy L. Wilson, both of Michigan City, Kenneth A. (Wendy) Wilson, Corpus Christi, Texas, and Robert L. (Hazel) Wilson, Houston; former daughter-in-law Sheila Wilson, San Antonio; 21 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters.
Mr. Wilson was a truck driver with Wanatah Trucking until he retired in 1969. He enjoyed making wooden toys and crafts as a hobby.
