Lottie Bolka
Lottie N. Bolka, 86, Michigan City, died at 1:40 a.m. Saturday (Sept. 27, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, with the Rev. Walter Ciesla officiating. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.
Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday and from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel. The Rosary Society will recite the rosary at 3 p.m. and the Parish Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m., both Monday at the funeral chapel.
Mrs. Bolka was born July 1, 1917, in Michigan City, to Adolph and Mary (Mazur) Bacztub. On April 19, 1941, in Michigan City, she married Edward J. Bolka, who preceded her in death on May 16, 1994.
She is survived by one son, Lawrence Bolka, Michigan City; two daughters, Judy (Roger) Schmidt and Janice (Alan) Plamowski, both of Michigan City; two grandchildren; and one brother, Edward (Helene) Bacztub, Michigan City.
Mrs. Bolka was a homemaker and member of St. Stanislaus Church and the St. Stanislaus Rosary Sodality.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Stanislaus Catholic Church.
Harold Smith
Harold Smith, 63, Michigan City, died Thursday (Sept. 25, 2003).
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, with the Rev. David Albertin officiating.
Kuiper Funeral Home, 9039 Kleinman Road, Highland, Ind., is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Smith married Janet Claire Sandin, who survives.
Survivors also include one daughter, Pamela Stacey Pearson, Scottsville, Ky.; one son, Andrew Allen (Dana) Smith, Lexington, Ky.; three stepchildren, Jay (Karen) Toyra, Lafayette, Ind., Jeffrey (Ildiko) Toyra, Chicago, and Jacqueline (Bill) King, Longwood, Fla.; 13 grandchildren; one brother, Walter L. (Charlotte) Smith, Anderson, Ind.; one sister, Nancy (Jim) Carter, Savage, Minn.; and his parents, Harold A. and LaVerne Smith, Plymouth, Mich.
Mr. Smith was the owner-operator of the historic 1866 Feallock House Bed and Breakfast and was a member of the Main Street Merchant Association, Elston Grove Neighborhood Association, Michigan City Chamber of Commerce, Indiana Bed and Breakfast Association, Michigan City Preservationists, Michigan City Chamber Music Association and International Friendship Gardens.
Mr. Smith was the regional supervisor for Rochester Midland Chemical and was a graduate of Anderson University in Anderson, Ind. He served as a police officer in Anderson and was formerly a sheriff's deputy in Madison County. He was also a former undercover agent for the ATF in Chicago. He also was a graduate of Plymouth High School in Plymouth, Mich., and was an avid sailor.
Jack Garrison
HAMLET, Ind. -- Jack L. Garrison, 75, Hamlet, died at 11:32 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 25, 2003) at Memorial Hospital, South Bend.
Cremation is planned. There is no service or visitation. Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte, handled the arrangements.
He was born Sept. 1, 1928, in Flint, Mich., to Leonard and Neva (Duncan) Garrison. On May 29, 1984, in Arlington, Va., he married Evelyn Basilan, who survives.
Survivors also include family in Indiana and the Philippines.
Mr. Garrison worked for 13 years with ELS as a logistics engineer, retiring in 1989. He lived in the LaPorte area for 10 years, coming from Arlington.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.
Dwight Michard
NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Dwight J. Michard, 79, North Fort Myers, formerly of Trail Creek, died Tuesday (Sept. 2, 2003) at Lee Memorial Hospital, Cape Coral, Fla.
Cremation has taken place and private family burial of the cremains will be in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens in Michigan City at a later date. Root Funeral Home handled local arrangements.
He was born March 3, 1924, in Detroit, to Charles and Matilda (Spear) Michard. On Feb. 5, 1949, in Chicago, he married Virginia "Ginny" Timm, who died Aug. 15, 1987. In August 2003, in Fort Myers, he married Carol Nice, who survives.
Survivors also include one daughter, Linda Lewartowski, Michigan City; two grandsons, Eric Lewartowski and Brad (Stephanie) Lewartowski, both of Michigan City; two great-grandchildren; and several brothers and sisters.
One brother also preceded Mr. Michard in death.
Mr. Michard was retired as a plumber for Lutz & Foreman in Michigan City after 14 years of service. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Army. Mr. Michard was a former member of the John Franklin Miller American Legion 37 and Plumbers Local 433.
William White
William R. White, 68, Michigan City, died at 9:30 a.m. Monday (Sept. 22, 2003) at his home.
There will be no funeral service. Cremation will take place. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at Carlisle Funeral Home. A memorial service conducted by American Legion Post 451 will be at 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
He was born April 25, 1935, in International Falls, Minn., to William H. and Beatrice (Olson) White. He married Kathryn Ray, who died June 2, 1991.
Survivors include three sons, Daniel (Sharon) White, Martinez, Calif., David (LaDawna) White, Bristol, Ind., and Andrew White, Michigan City; four grandchildren, Tyler, Stephanie, Emily and Matthew; three sisters, Barbara Gooding, Olympia, Wash., Margaret Lakman and Susan Luthy, both of Seattle; and two brothers, Michael (Doris) White, California, and John (Sonja) White, Woodenville, Wash.
Mr. White had worked at Arthur Andersen as an accountant. He also worked for Sullair Corp. as chief financial officer. Mr. White also owned The Video Company of Michigan City for over 20 years. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps. A member of the Elks B.P.O.E., Mr. White also was a member of the American Legion Skwiat Post 451. He was an avid sports fan, always rooting for Notre Dame and the Cubs.

Milo Swanson
LaPORTE -- Milo C. Swanson, 83, LaPorte, died at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday (Sept. 23, 2003) at his home.
The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Bethany Lutheran Church, with Pastor Dennis H. Meyer officiating. Burial will be in Pine Lake Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Essling Funeral Home and from 2 p.m. until the service Saturday at the church.
He was born Oct. 25, 1919, in LaPorte, to Christopher and Edith Swanson. On May 25, 1946, in Ypsilanti, Mich., he married Marva Jean Edwards, who survives.
Survivors also include two daughters, Judith A. (Ron) Ebeling, LaPorte, and Nancy E. (Brian) Alfing, Amado, Ariz.; eight grandchildren, Brianne Keefer, Morgan and Shane Liedeke, Christopher and Zachary Grohs, Sarah, Amanda and Elizabeth Afling; and one stepgrandchild, Zachary Ebeling.
Also preceding Mr. Swanson in death were one daughter, Karen Liedeke; and one grandson, Brent Donaldson.
Mr. Swanson was a superintendent for Larson Danielson Construction Co. for 37 years and developed the Swanson Heritage Hills Subdivision. A member of the Bethany Lutheran Church, Mr. Swanson served on the church council, on two church building committees and was the current treasurer for the church foundation.
For four years Mr. Swanson served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He volunteered for 19 years for Meals on Wheels and was a charter member of the Center Township Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Swanson was a 65-year member of the Pine Lake Grange 1044, serving as secretary for 45 of those years. Mr. Swanson also was a former member of the Center Township Advisory Board.

Sylvester Cermak
OAK BROOK, Ill. -- Sylvester Frank Cermak, 85, Oak Brook, died Sunday (Sept. 28, 2003) at his home.
The funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Mayslake Chapel, 1801 35th St., Oak Brook. Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. until the service Wednesday in the chapel.
He was born Dec. 20, 1917. On May 17, 1941, in Chicago, he married Irene Zelenka, who survives in Oak Brook.
Survivors also include two sons, Ray (Edna) Cermak, Michigan City, and Randall (Janet) Cermak, Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; two daughters, Diane Marsden, Glen Ellyn, Ill., and Susan (Charles) Simmonds, Justice, Ill.; one sister, Irene (Arthur) Malew, Medinah, Ill.; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Lois Andrews
Lois S. Andrews, 80, Michigan City, died at 5 a.m. Wednesday (Oct. 1, 2003) at Carroll Woods in Michigan City.
The mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Queen of All Saints Catholic Church, with the Rev. Keith McClellan officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. with wake services at 7 p.m. Friday at Root Funeral Home and from 9:30 a.m. until the service Saturday at the church.
She was born Jan. 6, 1923, in Michigan City, to Orva and Margaret (Jergens) Sassaman. On July 22, 1950, in Michigan City, she married Clyde E. Andrews, who survives in Michigan City.
Survivors also include one brother, Dean (Shirley) Sassaman, Pottawattomie Park; one cousin, Jack (Rose) Jergens, Michigan City; and two nieces.
Mrs. Andrews was retired. She had worked as a receptionist at several doctor's offices around Michigan City. A member of Queen of All Saints Church, she also was a former member of the rosary sodality. Mrs. Andrews was a guild member of St. Anthony Hospital.
Sarah Cross
Sarah Cross, 75, Michigan City, died at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday (Sept. 30, 2003) at Carroll Woods Nursing Center of Michigan City.
The funeral will be at noon Saturday at Greater Powerhouse C.O.G.I.C., with Pastor David Torrance officiating. Burial will be in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the service Saturday at the church.
She was born Nov. 9, 1927, in Charleston, Mo., to Moses and Rose (Hurns) Fulton. On March 19, 1946, in Michigan City, she married Leonard Charles "L.C." Cross Sr., who survives.
Survivors also include four sons, Leonard C. (Betty) Cross Jr. and Larry Cross, both of Michigan City, Michael (Sharon) Cross, Bloomington, Ind., and Winston (Adrienne) Cross Sr., Memphis, Tenn.; two daughters, Joanne (Lee) Rainey, Indianapolis, and Regina (Jimmie) Freeman, Lima, Ohio; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Alice Barnes, Charleston, Mo., and Clara Wilson, Gary; and a host of sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Also preceding Mrs. Cross in death were one granddaughter, Tiffany; three brothers; and four sisters.
Mrs. Cross retired from Chrysler Plastics as an assembler. Later she became a volunteer in the auxiliary department at Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Cross moved from Niles, Mich., in 1958. She was a lifelong member of Hatchett Temple C.O.G.I.C., now known as Greater Powerhouse C.O.G.I.C. In the church she served as a missionary, on the Mother's Board, and was the Sunshine Band Director.
Fay Harmon
Fay R. Harmon, 66, Michigan City, died at 8:21 p.m. Tuesday (Sept. 30, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Community Center of Faith, with apostle Edward F. Carnes officiating. Burial will be in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens. There will be a private family visitation only. Carlisle Funeral Home handled arrangements.
She was born Dec. 15, 1936, in Jackson, Miss., to Clarence and Mozzella (Dabney) Harris. On Sept. 17, 1955, in LaPorte, she married Johnnie L. Harmon, who died Aug. 4, 1995.
Survivors include five daughters, Trudy Crawford, Sandra, Linda and Jessie Harmon and Carolyn (Ed) Combs, all of Michigan City; three sons, John (Sue) Harmon Jr., Steve and Dennis Harmon, all of Michigan City; 26 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Francis Evans, Tacoma, Wash., and Lorraine Jamieson, Chicago; and special friends Diane Patterson and Alpha Mae Williams.
Also preceding Mrs. Harmon in death were one daughter, Sheila Harmon; one sister, Dorothy Scott; and two brothers, John Harris and her twin, Ray Harris.
Mrs. Harmon was a homemaker and a member of the Community Center of Faith.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or to the Community Center of Faith.
Homer Harp
LaPORTE -- Homer Ray Harp, 77, LaPorte, died at 9:50 p.m. Tuesday (Sept. 30, 2003) at Fountainview Terrace, LaPorte.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Haverstock Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dennis Meyer officiating. Burial will be in Pine Lake Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 8 a.m. until the service Friday at the funeral home.
He was born Feb. 9, 1926, in LaPorte County, to Homer and Mabel (Good) Harp. On Aug. 31, 1956, in LaPorte, he married Erma Pontius, who died June 16, 1983.
Survivors include one stepdaughter, Dorothy Todd, LaPorte; one sister, Helen Sabie, LaPorte; three grandsons, Bruce (Deb) Wisner, Buffalo, Minn., Dean (Lisa) Wisner, Indian Springs, Ohio, and Lee (Stephanie) Wisner, Michigan City; seven great-grandchildren, Ronald, Bradly, Aaron, Christopher, David, Ella Rose and Jacob Wisner; nephew Robert P. Sabie, LaPorte, and other nieces and nephews; beloved friend, Lucy Harkleroad, LaPorte; sister-in-law Thelma Pataluch, LaPorte; and brother-in-law Al Pontius, LaPorte.
Also preceding Mr. Harp in death were two sisters, Gladys and Hope; and his great-grandson Matthew.
Mr. Harp was the co-owner of H&K Machine Co. for 17 years. He retired in 1993. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War. Mr. Harp belonged to the F.O.E. 2439 of LaPorte and the PNA (Polish National Alliance.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army or to the American Red Cross.
Michelle Waltz
FEASTERVILLE, Pa. -- Michelle M. Cranata Waltz, 40, Feasterville, died Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003.
The funeral mass was September 26 in the Church of St. Anselm. Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery.
She was born April 26, 1963. On Feb. 14, 2001, she married Duane C. Waltz, who survives.
Survivors also include three sons, Thomas J. Farrell, Andrew J. Farrell and Anthony M. Bernhauser; stepparents Harry and Doris Scarpiello and Joan Cascarino; 10 siblings, Robert, Andrew, Cathy, Krisy, Terry, Annette, Dianne, Anthony, Harry Jr. and Christopher; and her in-laws, Harry and Patricia Waltz of Michigan City; and many nieces and nephews.
Also preceding Mrs. Waltz in death was one son, Michael Z. Wallace.
