Isaac White
Isaac M. "Ike" White, 74, Michigan City, died at 5:12 p.m. Monday (Sept. 29, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.
The funeral will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. David Seifert officiating. Cremation will follow services. Visitation will be from noon until the service Saturday at the funeral chapel.
He was born Dec. 12, 1928, in Coal City, Ind., to John Nelson and Dolly (Rosetta) Regan. In Michigan City, in 1976, he married Jean Henson Ams, who survives.
Survivors also include one son, Steven (Katherine Hale) White, Chesterton; two daughters, Joyce White, Merrillville, and Jayma (Joe) Rodini, Gary; four stepdaughters, Deborah (Jim) Lemond, Westtown, N.Y., Donna (Ron) Eldridge, Tulsa, Okla., Diane Moore, Michigan City and Deanna (Rick) Rogers, Indianapolis; one stepson, William M. Ams Jr., Michigan City; one sister, Kathryn Barsock, Sebastian, Texas; one brother, Hardey White, Clay City, Ind.; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Also preceding Mr. White in death were three brothers, Herbert, Leroy and Louis White.
Mr. White worked as a diesel mechanic for Time DC in Chicago for 19 years. He then worked for Tandem Transport in Michigan City for 10 years before retiring. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Eustachius Banys
UNION PIER, MICH. -- Eustachius "Stanley" Banys, 81, Union Pier, died Wednesday (Oct. 1, 2003) at Life Care Center of Michigan City.
There will be a graveside service at 11 a.m. Saturday at Riverside Cemetery in Chikaming Township, Mich.
No visitation is scheduled. Pobocik Funeral Home Connelly-Noble Chapel, Three Oaks, Mich., is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Banys was born Aug. 7, 1922, in Lithuania. He came to the U.S. in 1950 and became a U.S. citizen in 1985. He was employed at Nabisco in Chicago. After his retirement in 1987, Mr. Banys moved to Union Pier.
Surviving are friends and caregivers, Julie, Greg, Corey and Amy Callahan, Three Oaks.
Clifford Swanson
LaPORTE -- Clifford C. Swanson, 89, LaPorte, died at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 1, 2003) at his home.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Essling Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ted Nordquist officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday and from 9:30 a.m. until the funeral Monday at the funeral home.
He was born May 14, 1914, in LaPorte, to Carl and Ella (Holl) Swanson. On Nov. 3, 1936, in Michigan City, he married Margaret Novreske, who survives.
Survivors also include two daughters, Sharon Buerger, Tucson, Ariz., and Linda (John) Erickson, LaPorte; three sons, Randall (Carolyn) Swanson, Durham, N.C., Kenneth (Debbie) Swanson, Anaheim, Calif., and Neal Swanson, LaPorte; 17 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Ethyl Tarnow, Fort Wayne, Ind.
Also preceding Mr. Swanson in death were one son, Clifford J. Swanson; two sisters, Doris Mae Swanson and Phyllis Shuth; and one brother, Earl Swanson.
Mr. Swanson and his brother Earl were co-owners of Swanson Brothers Painting and Decorating Co. He was a life member of the LaPorte Moose Lodge, the Local 1118 Painters Union of South Bend, Ind., and the Swanson Senior Center. Formerly, Mr. Swanson was a member of the LaPorte Travel and Camera Club.

Leona Warden
THREE OAKS, Mich. -- Leona Warden, 87, Three Oaks, died Wednesday (Oct. 1, 2003) at Lakeland Hospital, Niles, Mich.
Memorial services will be at 12:20 p.m. EDT Sunday at Pobocik Funeral Home, Three Oaks, with the Rev. Robert Gault officiating.
Mrs. Warden was born March 15, 1916, in Wisconsin. On January 11, 1942, in Detroit, she married Joseph H. Warden, who preceded her in death on March 27, 1994.
Survivors include her son, Milton J. (Carolyn Shorkey) Warden, Asheville, N.C.; daughters-in-law Jean Warden and Monserrate Warden; grandchildren Leyda Pendergrass, Cynthia McNeil, Chad Warden and Kristin Warden; five great-grandchildren; sister Verna Fee, Chicago; sister-in-law Lillian Yost; niece Kathleen Nelson; and nephew Ray Yost.
Also preceding Mrs. Warden in death were two sons, Kenneth P. Warden and Daniel J. Warden.
The Warden family moved from Blissfield, Mich., in 1950 to make their home in Three Oaks, where they owned and operated the Three Oaks Bakery until 1970. Leona was a member of the First Congregational Church in Three Oaks.

John Highberger
John W. Highberger, 73, Michigan City, died Wednesday morning (Oct. 1, 2003) at his home.
Cremation will take place. There will be no viewing. Memorial services will be announced at a later date. Root Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
Mr. Highberger was born June 10, 1930, in Fargo, N.D., to Gerald A. and Helen L. (Center) Highberger.
Survivors include five daughters, Anne (David) Prokowski, The Pines, Susan (Robert) Schoenherr, Nebraska City, Neb., Kathy (Brantley) Echols, Atlanta, Judy (Kurt) Chamberlain, Chicago, and Mary (Richard) Williams of St. Petersburg, Fla.; four sons, Richard A. Highberger, Northbrook, Ill., Stephen (Jenny) Highberger, Santa Rosa Beach, Fla., Thomas (Yla) Highberger, Houston, and William Highberger of Mediera Beach, Fla.; 18 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mr. Highberger was a graduate of Butler University and was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. Mr. Highberger broke into TV broadcasting in 1957 with TV station KARD in Wichita, Kan. He was there when WAYK, now WAKE AM, radio first went on the air in Valparaiso as its first sports director, broadcasting Valparaiso University football and basketball games. He also called play-by-play for Chesterton and Valparaiso high school boys and broadcast many sporting events from track meets to softball games throughout Porter County.
He was a member of the "Order of the Pitch Fork," successfully picking Michigan City's Elston High School, in the pre-season, as the Boys Basketball State Champs in 1966. In 1968, he coined the term "Golden" Trojans for the Chesterton boys basketball team as they surged to their first sectional championship since 1955.
In the 1960s, he ran for town judge in Chesterton. Mr. Highberger was also a retired general manager for Channel 50 in Lake Station.
He was a member of Queen of All Saints Church in Michigan City and was an Army veteran serving during the Korean War.
Jean Deardurff
LaPORTE -- Jean E. Deardurff, 68, LaPorte, died at 6:40 a.m. Saturday (Oct. 4, 2003) at her home.
A memorial service is at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bethany Lutheran Church, LaPorte, with the Rev. Dennis Meyer officiating. There is no visitation. Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.
Mrs. Deardurff was born Oct. 6, 1934, in Michigan City to Harvey and Isabel (Lippens) Rhoda. On Aug. 25, 1956, in Michigan City, she married Richard Deardurff, who survives in LaPorte.
Also surviving are one son, Rick (Roxanne) Deardurff, Fishers, Ind.; one daughter, Pam (Vic) Hodges, Roswell, Ga.; four grandchildren; one sister, Sue (Roland) Biggs, Michigan City; one brother, Richard Rhoda, Garland, Texas; a niece and a nephew.
Mrs. Deardurff retired after 26 years of teaching at Crichfield Elementary School, LaPorte. She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Elks Lodge 432 in Michigan City, Tri Kappa Sorority in LaPorte, the Red Hat Society in LaPorte and the Beechwood Ladies 18-Hole Golf League in LaPorte.
Memorials may be made to the Bethany Lutheran Church Memorial Fund or Foundation, or to VNA Hospice, LaPorte.
Robert Guerin
Robert A. Guerin, 94, Michigan City and a longtime resident of Chicago's Beverly neighborhood, died at 10:30 p.m. Thursday (Oct. 2, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.
The service is at 1 p.m. Monday at Notre Dame Catholic Church, with visitation from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Carlisle Funeral Home.
Mr. Guerin married Audrey Teevan, who preceded him in death.
Survivors include six sons, Robert (Mary), Richard (Eileen), Roger (Jean), Ronald (Denise), Raymond (Deborah) and Russell (fianc/ Suzanne); one daughter, Rita (Robert) McConn; grandchildren, Sean (Jenny), Kelly (Stephen) Lower, Richard (Katie), Megan, Kathleen (Kevin) Phelan, Roger (Jamie), Jason, Brian, Lauren, John, Jill, Daniel, Patrick, Kevin, Emily and Bridget Guerin, and Timothy, Patrick, Kevin and Brian McConn; and five great-grandchildren, Riley, Shannon, Audrey, Ryan and Jack Guerin.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Guerin, and a sister, Margaret Guerin.
Born in Chicago, Mr. Guerin attended DeLaSalle Institute and DePaul University. He was a former special agent in charge of numerous offices of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, including New York, New Orleans and Detroit. Later, he was an employee of General Motors, Cadillac Division. He became director of the Motor Maintenance Division of the Chicago Police Department. He took retirement in 1984 and moved to his vacation home in Long Beach. He also was former president and lifelong member of the Chicago Athletic Association.
Carol Klenk
LaPORTE -- Carol Patricia Klenk, 63, LaPorte, died at 5:35 a.m. Sunday (Oct. 5, 2003) in her home.
A private family service will be at a later time.
Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Cutler Funeral Home, LaPorte.
Mrs. Klenk was born Oct. 17, 1939, in Tinley Park, Ill., the daughter of Joseph and Matilda (Kraatz) Machtemes.
On Feb. 6, 1960, she was married to Donald Klenk, who preceded her in death on Sept. 25, 1984.
Surviving are three daughters, Denise Klenk, LaPorte, Darlene (Ed) Spottiswood, Lansing, Ill., and Diane (Dean) Karlovich, Valdese, N.C.; seven grandchildren; three sisters, Lucille Plunkett, LaPorte; Geri Manning, Palatine, Ill., and Patricia Beedon, Hazel Crest, Ill; and one brother, Leroy Machtemes, LaPorte.
Mrs. Klenk also was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, Lorraine Reeks, Adaline, Evelyn and Eleanor Machtemes, and three brothers, Joseph, Leonard and Jimmy Machtemes.
Retired from the Prudential Life Insurance Company, Mrs. Klenk was a member of the 1957 graduating class of Bremen High School, Midlothian, Ill. She enjoyed oil painting and gardening.
The family suggests memorials to VNA Hospice.
Lila Krueger
NEW BUFFALO, MICH. -- Lila R. Krueger, 83, New Buffalo, died Saturday (Oct. 4, 2003) at her daughter's home in LaPorte.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. EDT Wednesday at Pobocik Funeral Home Connelly-Noble Chapel, Three Oaks, Mich., with the Rev. Brad Bartlemay officiating. Interment will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery, New Buffalo.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. EDT Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Krueger was born on Dec. 8, 1919, in Michigan City, the daughter of Edward and Gladys (Barnes) Maerz. On Sept. 13, 1941, she was married to LaVern Krueger, who preceded her in death on June 13, 1982.
Surviving are her children, Robert Krueger and Dale (Kathie) Krueger, both of New Buffalo, and Sharon (Norman) Meyers, LaPorte; three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Harold Maerz, LaPorte; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Maerz, LaPorte, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
One brother, Howard Maerz, and two sisters Audrey Rudecki and Mary Eleanor Maerz, and a sister-in-law, Dewana Maerz, preceded Mrs. Krueger in death.
A graduate of Springfield High School, Mrs. Krueger lived in New Buffalo most of her life. With her husband, she was engaged in farming. She also had been employed at Allis Chalmers and at various eating establishments in New Buffalo and in Indiana. She was a member of the New Buffalo Township Fire Department Auxiliary.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriner's Hospital, 2211 North Oak Park Ave., Chicago, IL 60707.
Chantima Simpson
CHESTERTON -- Chantima Ratanaproek Simpson, 32, Chesterton, died Wednesday (Oct. 1, 2003) at St. James Hospital, Chicago Heights, Ill.
The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the White-Love Funeral Home, Chesterton, with Pastor Gordon Wemsey officiating. Burial will follow in Chesterton Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the service Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Simpson was born Aug. 20, 1971, in Shong Kli, Thailand.
Surviving are her husband, Estel Lee Simpson, Chesterton; one daughter, Skyler Caitlin Simpson; and two sons, Chet and Chaz Simpson; her grandmother, Woo Jeo Lee Ratanaproek Lincoln City, Oregon; a mother-in-law Sally Powers, Chesterton; a father-in-law Carroll Simpson, Arkansas; and an aunt and uncle, Pat and Gary Kaplin, Lincoln City, Oregon.
A registered nurse, Mrs. Simpson was a graduate of the University of Michigan.

Thelma Cochran
LaPORTE -- Thelma L. Cochran, 75, LaPorte, died at 6:45 a.m. Sunday (Oct. 5, 2003) at Countryside Place, LaPorte.
A memorial service is at 10 a.m. Thursday at Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte, with the Rev. Dennis Meyer and Roger Singleton officiating. Cremation is planned, with burial of the ashes in Patton Cemetery, LaPorte. Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 8 a.m. until the service Thursday at the funeral home.
She was born July 1, 1928, in LaPorte to Roy C. and Anna (Thorndyke) Parker. On Aug. 30, 1957, she married Robert S. Cochran, who died April 15, 1995.
Survivors include one son, Robert (Jane) Cochran, Bloomington, Ill.; one daughter, Pam (Rick) Kievert, Colorado Springs, Colo.; three brothers, Donald Parker, Walkerton, Ind., Larry L. Parker and Paul E. Parker, both of LaPorte; and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Glen A. Parker.
Mrs. Cochran was a housewife. She also worked at Allis-Chalmers for 12 years. She was an avid LaPorte Slicer Baseball fan and was awarded the Betsy Ross Award from Slicer Baseball. She enjoyed working at the Door Village United Methodist Church stand during the county fair and Harvest Festival. She also enjoyed baking.
