Eugene Hodges

Eugene D. Hodges, 52, Michigan City, died at 10:56 a.m. Thursday (Oct. 9, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.

A memorial service is at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Carlisle Funeral Home. Cremation is planned. There is no visitation.

Mr. Hodges was born Jan. 25, 1951, in Michigan City to William Hodges, who preceded him in death, and Marjorey (Segnitz) Hodges, who survives.

Also surviving are brothers Thomas and Phillip Hodges, both of Hot Springs, Ark.; a sister, Marjorie (Stan) Mrozek, New Buffalo, Mich.; and a niece, Lela Veal, Michigan City.

She was preceded in death by a twin brother and a sister, Judy Hodges.

Mr. Hodges retired from Westville Correctional Center, where he was a cook for 15 years. He graduated from Scarborough College in the United Kingdom, attended Quaker School Berver Wards in the Netherlands and Schiller College in Germany.

LaVonne Zaideman

PORTER -- LaVonne M. Zaideman, 68, Porter, died Friday (Oct. 10, 2003) at her home.
The funeral is at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Chesterton, with the Rev. Ronald Larson officiating. Burial is in Chesterton Cemetery. Visitation is from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at White-Love Funeral Home, Chesterton, and 10 a.m. until the service Wednesday at the church.

Mrs. Zaideman was born April 12, 1935, in Valparaiso to Clarence and Dora (Holst) Johnson, both of whom preceded her in death. On Oct. 30, 1955, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, she married Jim Zaideman, who survives.

Survivors also include three sons, Greg (Norene) Zaideman, Bartlett, Ill., Larry (Cathy) Zaideman and Glenn (Karen) Zaideman, all of Porter; a step-son, Mike Zaideman, Dunellon, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; a brother, Wilbur Johnson, Valparaiso; a sister, Gerrie Deckert, Louden, Tenn.; three sisters-in law, Evelyn Johnson, Chesterton, Betty Johnson, Washington, and LaVerne Johnson, Arizona.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Delmar and Lloyd Johnson, and two sisters, Helen and Vivian Johnson.

A lifelong Duneland community resident, Mrs. Zaideman was a homemaker and member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and its W.E.L.C.A. She was active in State Park Little League Auxiliary, a den mother with the Boy Scouts, an avid bowler and was active in the "Over-the Hill" bowling league in Michigan City. She also volunteered with Meals on Wheels and Contact Cares. She was a 1953 Chesterton High School graduate and was in the Queen's Court during Chesterton's centennial celebration.

Memorials may be made to Bethlehem Lutheran Church Building Fund.

Mark Oliver

SOUTH MIAMI, Fla. -- Mark M. Oliver, 46, South Miami, Fla., formerly of Michigan City, died unexpectedly at his home on Oct. 6, 2003.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated in Florida at Holy Rosary Catholic Church on Oct. 10, 2003. Burial took place in Florida after Mass.

Mr. Oliver was born Dec. 16, 1956, in Hammond, to James and Helen Keegan Oliver. His parents survive in Michigan City. On June 25, 1988, in Miami, Fla., he married Peggy Oliver, who survives in South Miami.

Also surviving is one daughter, Samantha Oliver, South Miami; one sister, Kathy (Brian) Howell, Reid City, Mich.; four brothers, James (Cynthia) Oliver, Michigan City, Scott (Estela) Oliver, Houston, Tom (Tina) Oliver, Vallejo, Calif., and Mike Oliver, Michigan City.

Coach Oliver was a graduate of Indiana University in 1978. He moved to south Florida in 1983 and began teaching and coaching at Palmer Trinity School in Miami. His teams included junior varsity and varsity football, baseball and softball, and he was recently named athletic director for the Middle School. He also coached Khoury League softball and Summer Travel League softball.

Coach Oliver was beloved and respected by faculty, students, parents and alumni. He was a tremendously strong force with a very gentle demeanor. He always inspired in his students 100 percent teamwork and lived by example. His mentors were Al Shinn and Frank Schiavonne.

Memorials may be made to the Samantha Oliver Trust Fund, Palmer Trinity School, attn. Development Office, 7900 S.W. 176th, Miami, FL 33157.

Lynn Reyher

NILES, Mich. -- Lynn Ann Reyher, 61, Niles, died at 8:20 p.m. Sunday (Oct. 12, 2003) at Memorial Hospital, South Bend.

The memorial service will be at noon EDT Thursday at New Buffalo Methodist Church, New Buffalo, Mich., with the Rev. Brad Bartelmay officiating. Burial of the ashes will be at a later date.

She was born July 17, 1942, in Alma, Mich., to Myron H. and Elinor (Kirvan) Reyher.

Survivors include one brother, Robert (Laurie) Reyher, Michigan City; one niece, Jennifer Lynn Reyher; and one nephew, Joshua Stuart Reyher.

Miss Reyher had been a librarian at Ring Lardner Junior High School, Niles, for 35 years. She was an avid fisherwoman and gardener. Miss Reyher also enjoyed traveling all over the world.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Michigan City Public Library Endowment Fund.

Carl Severin

LaPORTE -- Carl C. Severin, 83, LaPorte, died at 4:40 a.m. Saturday (Oct. 11, 2003) at LaPorte Hospital.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte, with the Rev. Douglas Hadley officiating. Burial will be in Union Mills Cemetery, Union Mills, Ind.

Visitation is from noon Wednesday until the service at the funeral home.

Mr. Severin was born Aug. 1, 1920, in Union Mills to Otto C. and Agnes L. (Wise) Severin.

Survivors include two nephews, George A. Ault, Valparaiso, and Charles Ault Jr., Mishawaka, Ind.; and one brother-in-law, Charles Ault Sr., Valparaiso.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Dorothy E. Ault.

Mr. Severin had lived his entire life in the LaPorte area and retired as a mechanic from LeRoy Farms.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the American Legion Post 400 of Fish Lake, Ind.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a member of the Stillwell Rod and Gun Club.

Memorials may be made to the American Legion Post 400 of Fish Lake.

Elbert Shaw

LaPORTE -- Elbert "Bill" William Shaw, 58, LaPorte, died at 10:49 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 11, 2003) at LaPorte Hospital.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Haverstock Funeral Home, with the Rev. Darryl Baker officiating. Burial will be in Pine Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. until the service Wednesday at the funeral home.

He was born June 20, 1945, in LaPorte, to Walter James and Charlotte Marie (Berg) Shaw, who survive in LaPorte. On Nov. 1, 1980, in LaPorte, he married Nancy D. Parks, who survives.

Survivors also include a daughter, Jeri (Chris) Surma, Rolling Prairie; a son, Walter Shaw, LaPorte; two sisters, Lenore (Hoy) Howard, LaPorte, and Rowena (Chuck) Meyers, Michigan City; two brothers, Jim (Carol) Shaw, LaPorte, and Robert (Linda) Shaw, Knox, Ind.; and two grandchildren.

Mr. Shaw lived his entire life in the LaPorte area. He was the owner/operator and president of Shaw's Auto Service, Inc. He also was the senior vice-president of Ingenero Corp. He graduated from LaPorte High School in 1964. Mr. Shaw belonged to the F.O.P. Lodge of LaPorte and was a member of the Indiana Towing and Wrecker Association.

Memorial contributions may be made to the donor's choice.

James Shupe

VALPARAISO, Ind. -- James William Shupe, 56, Valparaiso, died Saturday (Oct. 11, 2003) as a result of an automobile accident in Union County, Ill.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Moeller Funeral Home, 104 Roosevelt Road, Valparaiso. Burial will be in Angelcrest Cemetery.

Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mr. Shupe was born Feb. 1, 1947, in Aurora, Ill., to George and Doris (Bain) Shupe. On January 22, 1971, in Clearwater, Fla., he married Vickie Prochno, who survives in Valparaiso.

Also surviving are three children, Jay (Suzanne) Shupe, Valparaiso, Patsy (Roger) Heikema, Holland, Mich., and Darin James (Carrie) Shupe, Fontana, Calif.; his mother, Doris Bain Renik, Wisconsin; three grandchildren, Zachary, Jodie and Justin; his brothers and sisters, Danny (Lorraine) Shupe, Minnesota, Donnie (Barbara) Shupe, Tennessee, Sherry (Robert) Tucker, Wanatah, Pat Marsh, Tennessee, Wesley (Lanita) Shupe, Tennessee, and George (Shelly) Shupe, Colorado; his father and mother-in-law, Eugene and Genevieve Prochno, Valparaiso; beloved companions, Daisy and A.J., and numerous loving nieces and nephews.

Mr. Shupe served with the U.S. Navy in Vietnam and had been a union paper hanger most of his life.

Memorials may be made to the family.

Loretta Flowers

Loretta Flowers, 39, Michigan City, died at 4:15 p.m. Monday (Oct. 13, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ernest Jones officiating. Burial will be in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday with family hour from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday at Carlisle Funeral Home.

She was born March 7, 1964, in Portageville, Mo. On July 21, 1994, she married Anthony Flowers, who survives.

Survivors also include her mother, Flora James (Ellie) Jackson; her father, Sylvester Young; four daughters, Shaquila McNeal and Marquita Williams, both of Michigan City, Shasta Young, Gary, and Antinica Flowers, South Bend; one son, DeAndre Young, Michigan City; three grandchildren, Christyiana, Sapphire and Quevin; two brothers, Antonio (Roberta) Young Sr., Michigan City, and Ellie Jackson Jr., Sikeston, Mo.; and three sisters, Kimberly Young, Michigan City, Sylvia (Willie) Jones, Gary, and Linda K. Barnes, Sikeston, Mo.

Also preceding Mrs. Flowers in death were four aunts, three uncles and her grandparents.

Mrs. Flowers was employed by Sprague Devices for approximately five years and by Gateway for about 10 years. Mrs. Flowers was an experienced and talented cook. She was a powerful and influential woman, and a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter and sister.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family in care of Carlisle Funeral Home.

Laura Gourley

FORT WORTH, Texas -- Laura Louise Gourley, 98, Fort Worth, formerly of Michigan City, died Monday (Oct. 13, 2003) at her home.

There will be a private graveside service. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Lucas & Thompson Funeral Directors in Fort Worth.

Survivors include three children, Jule Mae Lehr, Sebring, Fla.; Karen L. Gourley, Fort Worth; and Thomas R. Gourley, Crawfordsville, Ind.; 10 grandchildren, Lynda Harrigfield, Thomas J. Lehr, Denise Lehr, Allyson Gourley, Raymond Gourley, Cathren Cougill, Carter Scott, Dean Gourley, Taylor Scott and Grapham Gourley; 17 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Gourley was a retired hospital medical records employee.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Paul Lutheran School or the Union Gospel Mission.

Kenneth Kruse

AUSTIN, Texas -- Kenneth B. Kruse, 77, Austin, formerly of Michigan City, died at 4:05 a.m. Oct. 4, 2003, at the Hospice Austin's Christopher House in Austin.

A remembrance gathering was held at his home in Round Rock, Texas, on Oct. 9.

Mr. Kruse was born Jan. 31, 1926, in Chicago, to George and Elvera Kruse. On Nov. 15, 1947, in Chicago, he married Martha J. Evans, who survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Karen Rodriguez, Roseville, Calif.; one son, Kenneth " Butch" Kruse, Round Rock; granddaughter Danielle Kruse, Georgetown, Texas; nephew George Kruse, Mt. Carol, Ill.; nieces Nancy, Jeanette, Kristine, Mary Kay and Ann Marie; and many good friends.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Vera Kruse; and one brother, George Kruse.

In 1944, Mr. Kruse joined the Navy, where he served aboard both the USS Texas and USCGC Taney. He was honorably discharged in 1946. After leaving the Navy, he returned to work as an electrician in the family business, Kruse Electric, for several years.

He was a lifetime member of the American Legion, VFW, Disabled Veterans of America and the M.O.C. as well as the Michigan City Elks Club. He was an associate member of the Michigan City FOP and an honorary member of the Michigan City St. Joe Club.

During the early 1970s, Mr. Kruse and his wife managed the Oasis Mobile Home Park in Des Plaines, Ill., and in April 1976, moved to Michigan City to be the resident managers of the Parkwood Green Apartments. The couple loved Michigan City so much they stayed until their retirement in 1996.

After retirement, they moved to Round Rock to live next door to their son. Mr. Kruse loved to drive and tinker with his 1929 Ford Model A pickup truck and belonged to various Model A clubs. Most recently, he was a member of the Lone Star Model A Club of Georgetown, Texas. He drove his antique truck in numerous parades and functions and won many awards.

He will always be remembered as a man who loved his family and friends. He showed kindness to strangers in need whenever he could and was a man who would give you the shirt off his back.
