Sven Swanson
BRIDGMAN, Mich. -- Sven Louis Swanson, 94, Woodland Terrace, Bridgman, died at 7:10 p.m. E.D.T. Monday (Oct. 20, 2003) of natural causes at his home.
A private family service will be held at the Cutler Funeral Home, 2900 Monroe St., LaPorte, with the Rev. Erik Gustafson officiating. Burial will be in Heckman Cemetery, LaPorte. There will be no visitation.
Mr. Swanson was born May 10, 1909, in Chicago, to Bengt August and Ida (Johannson) Swanson. On June 21, 1934, in Michigan City, he married Maybelle Louise Murphy, who died Oct. 16, 1985.
Survivors include four daughters, Barbara (Dr. Adolfo) Felix, Tucson, Ariz., Carol Brychta, Lakeside, Mich., Nancy (David) Jones, LaPorte, and Mary (Roger) van Schoyck, LaPorte; three sons, Dale (Patricia) Swanson, Tucson, David (Beatrice) Swanson, and Glenn (Karen) Swanson, all of LaPorte; 17 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Jane Carpenter and Harriet Sweitzer, both of LaPorte.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Paul Swanson; and one sister, Helen Koenig.
Mr. Swanson retired from the Budd Co. in Gary, where he worked as a tool and die maker.
He was a member of the Michigan City Moose Lodge, the U.A.W. and was an avid gardener.

Clyde Andrews
Clyde Elton "Andy" Andrews, 81, Michigan City, died at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday (Oct. 21, 2003) at Carroll Woods Health & Rehab Center.
The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Root Funeral Home, 312 E. Seventh St., with the Rev. Darryl Baker officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon to 1:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
He was born Oct. 18, 1922, in Union Mills, to Clyde and Vera (Dye) Andrews. On July 22, 1950, in Michigan City, he married Lois Sassaman Andrews, who died Oct. 1, 2003.
Survivors include two sisters, Allene Welkie, LaPorte, and Jane (Sandor) Szoke, Valparaiso; one brother, Dr. Edwin L. (Beverly) Andrews, Schenectady, N.Y.; three nieces, Susan (Kelly) McKay, Jennifer Andrews and Beth (Kevin) Peters; two great-nieces; and two great-nephews.
Mr. Andrews was retired as the personnel director at Royal Metal. He served in the U.S. Army from July 30, 1945, to Nov. 9, 1946, and attained the rank of sergeant in World War II.
He was a graduate of Union Mills High School and was class president his senior year in 1940. He was a LaPorte Business School graduate in 1941 and went on to graduate from Indiana University in 1951. In the past, Mr. Andrews also worked at Joy Manufacturing, Dunn and Bush and Polaron in the personnel departments.
Mr. Andrews played the drums and belonged to the Musicians Union. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and was a former board member of the Visiting Nurses Association.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Michiana Humane Society, the VNA or the LaPorte Presbyterian Carillion Fund.
Karen Mulzon
LAKESIDE, Mich. -- Karen Mulzon, 48, Lakeside, died Tuesday (Oct. 21, 2003) at her home, surrounded by her family.
A mass of Christian burial will be said at 11 a.m. E.D.T. Saturday at St. Mary of the Lake Church, New Buffalo, Mich. with the Rev. James Morris officiating. Cremation will follow.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Pobocik Funeral Home, 106 E. Ash St., Three Oaks, Mich., where a vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. E.D.T. Friday.
Ms. Mulzon was born July 8, 1955, in Michigan City, to Warren and Priscilla (McGinn) Mulzon.
Survivors include her loving companion, Walter Purnell, Lakeside; one son Mathieu Purnell, Lakeside; three sisters, Katherine (Michael) Richmond, Michigan City, Theresa Mulzon, Sawyer, Mich., and Margaret DeMorrow, Three Oaks; three brothers, John (Norma) Mulzon, LaPorte, Thomas Mulzon, LaPorte, and David (Kathy) Mulzon, Mill Creek; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Michael Mulzon; one niece, Corin Mulzon; and one nephew, Ronald Clark.
Ms. Mulzon was a 1973 graduate from New Buffalo High School and lived in the area all of her life.
She enjoyed gardening, antiquing, reading and spending time at the beach.
Memorials may be made to the New Buffalo Library or to Hospice at Home of Stevensville, Mich.
Ava Washington
Ava B. Washington, 78, Michigan City, died at 8:30 a.m. Friday (Oct. 17, 2003) at her home.
A prayer service will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Griffin Funeral Home, 3232 S. King Drive, Chicago. Cremation has taken place.
The daughter of the late Carrie Sharp, she was born in Dublin, Ga., on Aug. 8, 1925. In 1968, in Chicago, she married Clyde O. Washington, who survives in Michigan City.
Survivors also include one niece, Eloise Hansbrough, Chicago; one brother-in-law, Josh Washington Jr., St. Joseph, La.; five sisters-in-law, Johnie L. Dukes, Baton Rouge, La., Dr. Alice Coner-Edward, Washington, D.C., Malinda Washington, Chicago, and Dorothy Raven and Marie Lewis, both of Florida; and many fond nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Washington was a homemaker. While living in Chicago, she enjoyed gardening.
Veoria Bartz
LaPORTE -- Veoria L. Bartz, 95, LaPorte, died at 7:36 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 22, 2003) at Countryside Place, LaPorte.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte, with Doug Ohime officiating. Burial will be in Patton Cemetery, LaPorte.
Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. until the service Saturday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Bartz was born July 28, 1908, in Argos, Ind., to John and Jennie (Carr) Emigh. On Dec. 22, 1926, in LaPorte, she married Lloyd A. (Bud) Bartz, who died Oct. 1, 1991.
Survivors include two daughters, Wilma Mae (Hershell) Stephens, LaPorte, and Margaret L. (Judd) Whittaker, Highland, Calif.; 17 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and 27 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two daughters, Alberta J. (Richard) Nickerson and Betty (Arthur) Ohime; her parents; three sisters; and three brothers.
She was a lifelong resident of the LaPorte area and a member of the First Baptist Church.
Memorials may be made to the VNA Hospice, 901 S. Woodland Ave., Michigan City, IN 46360.
Ruth Sadowski
Ruth M. Sadowski, 85, Michigan City, died at 9:45 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 22, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.
There will be no services or visitation. Cremation will take place and the ashes interred privately in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Michigan City. Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington St., Michigan City, handled the arrangements.
Mrs. Sadowski was born Jan. 2, 1918, in Otis, to Harry and Martha (Dreyer) Rapp. She married Felix Sadowski, who survives in Michigan City.
Survivors also include two sons, Anthony (Meredith) Sadowski and William (Mariann) Sadowski, both of Michigan City; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one sister, Harriet Young, Michigan City; and one brother, Chester Dreyer, LaPorte.
She was preceded in death by one son, Dennis Sadowski; and one brother, Marian "Bud" Rapp.
Mrs. Sadowski retired from St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers Dietary Department. She was a loving wife, wonderful grandma to all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and the best mother to her sons.
Memorials may be made to Queen of All Saints Catholic Church or the American Cancer Society.
Margaret Self
LaPORTE -- Margaret M. Self, 91, LaPorte, died at 3 a.m. Thursday (Oct. 23, 2003) at Fountainview Terrace Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Essling Funeral Home, 1117 Indiana Ave., LaPorte, with Pastor Carl Galloway Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Michigan City.
Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. until the service Saturday at the funeral home.
She was born April 9, 1912, in Michigan City, to George and Cicil (Van Dusen) Milzarek.
Survivors include several nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Also preceding Mrs. Self in death were four brothers, Robert, Leonard, Lester and Lawrence Milzarek; and one sister, Dora Quadlin
Mrs. Self retired from Ramset Redhead in Michigan City.
Edward Gallas
Edward "Gus" Gallas, 76, Michigan City, died at 10:03 p.m. Thursday, (Oct. 23, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.
A mass of Christian burial will be at noon Monday at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, with the Rev. Walter Ciesla officiating. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Monday at Root Funeral Home, 312 E. Seventh St., Michigan City. St. Joseph Young Men's Society will conduct a rosary at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Mr. Gallas was born Oct. 9, 1927, in Michigan City, to John and Julia (Dorochowicz) Gallas. On May 6, 1950, in Michigan City, he married Lorraine Witek Gallas, who survives in Michigan City.
Survivors also include one daughter, Jane (Michael) Eisele, LaPorte; two sons, James Gallas, Michigan City, and Steve (Debbie) Gallas, Highland, Ind.; and five grandchildren, Mark and Brian Gallas and Kurt, Emily and Andrew Eisele.
Mr. Gallas was retired from Bethlehem Steel in Gary. He was a member of St. Stanislaus Church and served in the Army Air Corps. Mr. Gallas belonged to the St. Joseph Young Men's Society and the Skwiat American Legion Post 451. Mr. Gallas also coached CYO basketball and I.C. baseball for many years.
Memorials maybe made to the St. Stanislaus School Endowment Fund.
Norma Smith
Norma Jean Smith, 74, Michigan City, died at 7:30 p.m. Thursday (Oct. 23, 2003) at Life Care Center in Michigan City.
A mass of Christian burial will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Queen of All Saints Church, with the Rev. Terry Chase officiating. Burial will be in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens after mass.
Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Root Funeral Home, 312 E. Seventh St., and from 9:45 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at Queen of All Saints Church. A wake service will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
She was born Dec. 3, 1928, in Michigan City, to William and Amelia (Knoll) Welnetz. On May 3, 1958, in Michigan City, she married Henry J. "Bud" Smith, who survives in Michigan City.
Also surviving is one daughter, Amy (Imre) Falatoviaz, Michigan City; four sons, Larry (Dee) Smith, Stoney Point, N.Y., Dan Smith and Andy (Patricia) Smith, both of Michigan City, and Phillip Smith, Covington, Ga.; seven grandchildren; one brother, William Welnetz, Trail Creek; and one sister Judy Rau, Hammond.
Also preceding Mrs. Smith in death is one sister, Joan Menke; and one brother, Russell Welnetz.
Mrs. Smith retired as assistant director of Nursing Administration at St. Anthony Hospital after many years of service. Mrs. Smith was a member of Queen of All Saints Church and Rosary Sodality and the Nurses Association.
Florence Kliss
NEW BUFFALO, Mich. -- Florence L. Kliss, 84, New Buffalo, died after her two-year struggle with anemia/leukemia at 12:01 a.m. Friday (Oct. 24, 2003) at her daughter's home in New Buffalo, surrounded by her family.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. E.S.T. Monday at St. John United Church of Christ, New Buffalo, with the Rev. Clyde Hunter officiating. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery. Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. E.S.T. Sunday at the Pobocik Funeral Home, 106 E. Ash St., Three Oaks, Mich.
She was born Jan. 1, 1919, in New Buffalo Township, to Edward and Alice (Bassett) Lubke. On Feb. 11, 1939, in the St. Johns Evangelical Church, Michigan City, she married Harold H. "Shorty" Kliss, who died in 1995.
Survivors include one son, Edward F. (Barbara Hogan) Kliss, Union Pier, Mich.; one daughter, Debra L. (Larry D.) Smith, New Buffalo; three grandchildren, Robin Kliss, Benton Harbor, Mich., Dale Kliss, Clearwater, Fla., and Shane Smith, New Buffalo; and her Godchild, Sandra Roth, South Bend.
Also preceding Mrs. Kliss in death were one son, Ronald H. Kliss in 1977; one grandson, Allen Kliss in 1997; and two brothers, Norman and Raymond Lubke.
Mrs. Kliss graduated from New Buffalo High School in 1937. Mr. and Mrs. Kliss owned and operated Oak Hill Nursery, selling nursery stock directly and through their mail order business. She was a lifelong member of St. John United Church of Christ in New Buffalo.
Mrs. Kliss enjoyed sewing and used her talents sewing with the Women's Fellowship group at the church. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge 309 in Three Oaks, where she earned her Degree of Chivalry. Mrs. Kliss also belonged to the Galena and New Buffalo Home Extension. She loved to do china painting, watercolors and oil painting. She enjoyed a variety of crafts and liked nature and the beauty of life.
Mrs. Kliss lived her entire life in New Buffalo and wintered in Clearwater, Fla.
