Robert Smith Sr.
LaPORTE -- Robert Lee Smith Sr., 70, LaPorte, died at 11:15 p.m. Thursday (Oct. 23, 2003) at his home of natural causes.
A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Monday (Oct. 27, 2003) at Countryside Christian Church, Michigan City, with the Rev. Rick Jones officiating. A private family intermenty will be held in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens, Michigan City. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until the service Monday at the church.
Arrangements were handled by Cutler Funeral Home, 2900 Monroe St., LaPorte.
He was born June 8, 1933, in Lima, Ohio, to Lester Lee and Alice Bernadine (Wade) Smith. On Nov. 6, 1953, in Lima, he married Eulalah V. Stevenson, who survives.
Survivors also include one daughter, Jennifer L. (Raymond C.) Gress, Allendale, Mich.; two sons, Robert L. Smith Jr., Portland, Ore., and Gregory S. Smith, Michigan City; two granddaughters, Tyesha (Curtis) Thaler, Middleville, Mich., and Lyndsey Gress, Allendale, Mich.; one great-grandson, Matthias Thaler, Middleville, Mich.; one sister, Rachel Thomas, Bensenville, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Smith had retired from NIPSCO, having worked in human resources. He was a member of Countryside Christian Church, Michigan City, and served as an elder. He was heavily involved in many of the ministries within the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Countryside Christian Church.
Phillip Bair
Phillip Gene Bair, 66, Westville, died Friday (Oct. 24, 2003) at his home.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4, at Biloxi National Cemetery in Biloxi, Miss. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, at Newhard Funeral Home in Westville. A second visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Nov. 3 at the Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home in Gulfport, Miss, with Mike Cochran officiating.
Mr. Bair was born April 29, 1937, in Albion, Indiana, to Clifton and Voneta (Elser) Bair. On May 27, 1967, in Chicago, he married Virginia L. "Ginny" Damesworth Phillips, who survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Nichole Cooley, Westville, and Susan (Doyle) Syverson, Gulfport, Miss.; four grandchildren, Megan Whitten, Anthony Syverson, Kerry Cooley and David Cooley; in-laws Doris Phillips, Denise and Mike Thompson, Jerry and Tina Phillips and Jeanne Phillips; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Mr. Bair retired as a truck driver for Poole Truck Lines in 1998 after 22 years of service. He was a retired U.S. Navy Seabee, having served from 1954-1976, and was an EO-1.
He received numerous medals, commendations and ribbons during his service and was a member of VFW Post 4717 and the American Legion Post in Albion.
John Emigh
LaPORTE -- John W. "Bill" Emigh, 63, LaPorte, died at 7:25 a.m. Sunday (Oct. 26, 2003) at LaPorte Hospital.
The funeral is at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Essling Funeral Home, LaPorte, with the Rev. Doug Ohime officiating. Burial is in Patton Cemetery. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Emigh was born Dec. 10, 1939, in LaPorte. On Sept. 2, 1961, in LaPorte, he married Judy E. Henry, who survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Tami (Kris) Barber, Rolling Prairie; one son, John W. Emigh Jr., Troy, Mich.; four grandchildren, Matthew Emigh, Sarah Emigh, Brooke Barber and Eric Barber; and his mother, Florence Emigh, LaPorte.
He was preceded in death by his father and one sister, Sandra Liffick.
Mr. Emigh retired from the City of LaPorte Transport as a mechanic after eight years and worked for Berkel as a metal polisher for 22 years. He was a member and past governor of LaPorte Moose Lodge 492, a member of the Michiana Antique Auto Club and a volunteer for Door Prairie Auto Museum.

Norbert Manske
Norbert Manske, 76, Michigan City, died at 1:45 a.m. Sunday (Oct. 26, 2003) at St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers.
The funeral is at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Michael Wands officiating. Cremation is planned, with the ashes privately interred in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. A Masonic service is at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Manske was born Jan. 20, 1927, in Michigan City to Anton and Mary (Krulikowski) Manske. On Dec. 4, 1954, in Michigan City, he married Dorothy Gassow Kroening, who died July 5, 2001.
Survivors include one step-son, Hank (Judy) Kroening, Michigan City; three grandchildren, Susan Piecuch, Michigan City, and Robert Kroening and John (Annette) Kroening, both of Davenport, Iowa; and three great-grandsons, Christopher and Brian Piecuch, LaPorte, and Alexander Kroening, Davenport.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Clara Staback and Cecelia Dusza, and five brothers, Robert, Raymond, Leon, Edward and John.
Mr. Manske retired as an assembler from Budd Co., Gary, and was a school-bus driver for the Michigan City Area Schools. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran, a member of First Christian Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars 2536, American Legion Skwiat Post 451, Acme Lodge 83, F&AM, Orak Shrine Temple, St. Joseph Young Men's Society and Moose Lodge 980.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriner's Hospital of Oak Park, Ill., or multiple sclerosis.
David Manuel
CHESTERTON -- David E. Ranson Manuel, 20, Chesterton, died Friday (Oct. 24, 2003) at the University of Chicago Hospital.
The funeral is at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Francis Episcopal Church, Chesterton, with the Rev. Jack Meyer officiating. Cremation is planned at Calvary Crematory, Portage. Visitation is from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at White-Love Funeral Home, Chesterton.
Mr. Manuel was born May 6, 1983, in Monroeville, Penn.
He is survived by his parents, Bonnie and Dale Manuel, Chesterton; one brother, Matthew Ranson, Lafayette, Ind.; one sister, Barbara (Robert) Massa, Houston; and two uncles, Jerry Rowe, Smithfield, Va., and John Rowe, Portview, Penn.
Mr. Manuel was a member of St. Francis Episcopal Church and Boy Scouts of America 908, where he was an Eagle Scout. He was a 2001 Chesterton High School graduate and a student at Ball State University majoring in secondary education.

Susan Hicks
Susan E. Hicks, 65, Michigan City, died Friday (Oct. 24, 2003) at her home.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Eugene Kohlbecker officiating. Cremation will take place. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the service Thursday at the church. Carlisle Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
She was born Sept. 26, 1938, in Scotia, N.Y., to Clinton J. and Helen (Welke) Van Winkle. She married Roger Hicks, who survives.
Survivors also include two sons, Jeff (Sandy) Hicks, Aurora, Colo., and Tim (Julie) Hicks, Wheaton, Ill.; six grandchildren; and two sisters, Joyce Ann Kaey, Kirkland, Quebec, and Nancy Vaillencourt, Chesterton.
Mrs. Hicks had been employed in purchasing and customer service with Josam Manufacturing. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity Episcopal Church Memorial Fund.
Robert Kistler
ELKHART, Ind. -- Robert L. Kistler, 71, Elkhart, died at 9:57 a.m. EST Sunday (Oct. 26, 2003) at Elkhart General Hospital.
A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home, 403 W. Franklin St., Elkhart, with the Rev. Don Martin officiating. Cremation will take place.
Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mr. Kistler was born April 18, 1932, in Elkhart, to Cecil J. and Sylvia E. (Ullery) Kistler.
Survivors include one daughter, Amy (Verton) Nissley, Elkhart; two sons, Scott L. Kistler, Chicago, and Timothy J. (Joyce K.) Kistler, Indianapolis; 10 grandchildren; one sister, Sandra (Don) Gordon, Elkhart; and one brother, Byron (Doris) Kistler, Baton Rouge, La.
Before moving to Elkhart, Mr. Kistler was owner and operator of Bob's Appliance Repair, retiring in 1998. He also worked at Sears in Michigan City.
He was a collector of antique automobiles and was a member of Pioneer Auto Association, Muddy T Auto Club and Great Lakes Car Club.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, having served during the Korean War.
Memorial may be made to the Special Olympics.
Irwin Mendelsohn
SKOKIE, Ill. -- Irwin W. "Willie" Mendelsohn, 95, Lieberman Geriatric Health Center, Skokie, died Sunday (Oct. 26, 2003) at the care center.
The funeral is at 10 a.m. Thursday at The Piser Chapel, Skokie, with burial in Shalom Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation is one hour prior to the service.
Mr. Mendelsohn was born Feb. 6, 1908, in Chicago, to Jacob and Sarah Mendelsohn. In January 1939, in Chicago, he married Rose Steinberg, who died in August 1987.
Survivors include two daughters, Judi (Stephen) Tallackson, Ogden Dunes, Ind., and Roberta (Frank) Seidling, Holland, Texas; two grandsons, Andrew (Alice) Tallackson, Trail Creek, and Erik Tallackson, Chicago; one brother, Al Mendelsohn, Buffalo Grove, Ill.; one sister, Ann Gurwich, Chicago; and one sister-in-law, Estelle Mendelsohn, Chicago.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harry and Edward, and one sister, Shirley Mendelsohn
Mr. Mendelsohn was a past president of the Abraham Sachar B'nai B'rith.

Christina Otter
LaPORTE -- Christina A. Otter, 59, LaPorte, died at 1:42 a.m. Monday (Oct. 27, 2003) at VNA Hospice Center, Valparaiso.
The Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with the Rev. Gerald Sroka officiating. Burial will be in Pine Lake Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Wednesday and from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Essling Funeral Home, 1117 Indiana Ave., LaPorte. A prayer service will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
She was born Feb. 26, 1944, in Michigan City, to Clement and Lucille (Novak) Groch.
Survivors include one son, Joseph E. Otter, Indianapolis; two brothers, Jerry (Jackie) Groch, Tucson, Ariz., and William Wegiel, LaPorte; several nephews and cousins, aunts and uncles.
Preceding her in death were her father, Clement Groch, and mother, Lucille Wegiel.
Mrs. Otter was retired as a quality engineer, N.D.T. Level 3, from Howmet Corp. after 37 years of service. Mrs. Otter was also a volunteer at the Barker Museum in Michigan City.

John Scott
LaPORTE -- John R. Scott, 82, LaPorte, formerly of Devon Springs, Fla., died at 2:45 p.m. Sunday (Oct. 26, 2003) at Countryside Place Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, LaPorte.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Cutler Funeral Home, 2900 Monroe St., LaPorte, with the Rev. Hugh Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery, Mill Creek.
Visitation is from 9 a.m. Wednesday until the time of the service.
Mr. Scott was born Oct. 2, 1921, in Vermillion County, Ill., to Robert J. and Florence (Center) Scott. He married Audrey C. Lamb, who died Sept. 27, 1991. On Aug. 7, 1994, in LaPorte, he married Lois Bluhm, who died Oct. 20, 1998.
Survivors include one daughter, Janis R. (Phil) Thornburg, LaPorte; one son, Robert J. Scott, Fish Lake; four grandchildren, Ronald Scott, Jamie Spence, Lisa Menke and Angela Reaves; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, James Scott.
Mr. Scott was an officer at the Indiana State Prison, retiring in 1966.
He was a former member of Door Village Lions Club, and was a Meals on Wheels volunteer in Florida.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Robert Woodruff
Robert L. Woodruff, 77, Michigan City, died at 12 a.m. Saturday (Oct. 25, 2003) at Michigan City Health Care.
There will be no services. Cremation will take place. There will be no visitation. Carlisle Funeral Home handled arrangements.
He was born July 15, 1926, in Michigan City, to Harry and Flossie Bell (Rice) Woodruff.
Survivors include one daughter, Kathy (Mitchell) Root, Three Oaks, Mich.; two sons, Robert (Denise) Woodruff Jr., Louisiana, and Jeffrey Clark, New Castle, Ind.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.
Mr. Woodruff had been employed as a machinist at various out-of-state factories. He served in Germany during World War II with the U.S. Army. Mr. Woodruff belonged to the DAV Danny Bruce Chapter 23.
