Charles Kenneth "Ken" Fairfield
Charles Kenneth "Ken" Fairfield, 80, of Fort Wayne, former president of Don Shive Management, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at Parkview Hospital.
"He thoroughly enjoyed all the people he met on his rounds each week." The Fort Wayne native was founder and president of Fort Wayne Apartment Association, had also served on the board of directors and had also specialized in property management. He also worked part time for Sand Point Nursery. He had served in World War II and the Korean War in the Army Air Corps, Air Force and Air National Guard. Surviving are his wife of 33 years, Ruth; sons Steven of Dallas and Gary of Jacksonville, Fla.; daughters Sue Spitler of Michigan City and Nancy McGraw of Olive Branch, Miss.; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at D.O. McComb& Sons Maplewood Park Funeral Home, 4017 Maplecrest Road, with calling from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be at Covington Memorial Gardens.

Herbert C. Zinn, 96, of Fort Wayne, owner of Zinn's Standard Service Station for 40 years, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, at Lutheran Hospital.
The Payette, Idaho, native was also owner of Zinn's Beer& Cheer for several years. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus 451 and also lived in Venice, Fla. Surviving are his wife, Olivette; sons Dale of Fremont, Robert of Columbia City and David of St. Louis, Mo.; a daughter, Diane Lassus of Fort Wayne; a brother, the Rev. Phillip of Tampa, Fla.; a sister, Dorothy Zinn of Fort Wayne; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1910 Hale Ave., with calling one hour before services. James H. Thomas, 63, of Fort Wayne, an avid bass fisherman and sports enthusiast, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, at home.
"He was all things to many." The St. Joseph, Mich., native was owner of Ridge Co. Auto Parts in Fort Wayne, Wabash and Huntington, which had been founded by his father, Bill. He was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Evelyn; daughters Kim Springer of Fort Wayne, Tammie Ware of Carmel and Lisa Moor of Pittsboro; a twin brother, Joe of Fort Wayne; a sister, Marion Bonner of Evansville; and five grandchildren. Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Covington Memorial Funeral Home, 8408 Covington Road, with calling one hour before services and also from 2 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. "He enjoyed NASCAR racing and football." He worked with B& N Auto Sales for one year, had worked for Graves Trucking Co. for 10 years and Mobile Aerial Towers for 13 years. Surviving are his wife, Virginia M.; sons Dean A. and Chris J., both of Fort Wayne; daughters Patricia A. Rice and Devonna L. The Fort Wayne native retired in 1986 from North Side High School as cashier after 20 years of service and was a member of American Legion Post 499. Surviving are a son, Doyle W. of Fort Wayne; daughters Cindy L. Falls and Janet S. Durbin, both of Fort Wayne; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Doyle W. Sr., and a brother. Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at C.M. Sloan& Sons Funeral Home, 1327 N. "Beloved grandpa to Jesse." The Bismarck, N.D., native had worked as a certified pubic accountant with various firms for 30 years. He had served in Army National Guard and his hobbies were nature, outdoor work and playing bridge. Surviving are sons Trent and Mark, both of Fort Wayne; a brother, Karl of South Bend; sisters Ruth Hanson of Vandalia, Mich., and Gail Grorud of South Bend; his former wife, Sharon Grorud of Dana Point, Calif.; and one grandchild. William T. "Bill" Eckman, 75, of Warren, owner/operator of Eckman Motors for more than 50 years, died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002, at home. The Warren native's dealership was the oldest Pontiac dealership in the United States. He was a member of Warren United Methodist Church, National and Indiana Automobile Dealers associations, King Masonic Lodge 246 and Scottish Rite Valley of Fort Wayne. He was a World War II and Korean War Marine Corps veteran. Surviving are his wife, Elaine; a son, Mark of Warren; daughters Lisa Martin of Philadelphia, Sally Roberts of Indianapolis and Suzanne Anderson of Columbia, S.C.; sisters Mary Tam of Elwood, Sally Humbaugh of Washington and Jane Bear of Craigville; and eight grandchildren. Donald E. Freeman, 83, of Hamilton, a retired farmer, died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002, at home. The Auburn native retired in 1981 from farming and from Rieke's in Auburn. He was a member of Hamilton Fish& Game, enjoyed going to auctions and was a World War II Army veteran. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy; daughters Diana Alwood of Las Vegas and Darlene L. "She enjoyed taking in and helping foster children." She had worked at Fort Wayne Newspapers, at General Electric Co. for 14 years and attended Bethel Baptist Church and St. Paul's Church. Surviving are her husband, James; sons Vern R. and Bill Walser, George and Terry Goelz, and James Roberts, all of Danville; a stepson, John Goelz of Fort Wayne; daughters Debbie Doggett of Chrisman and Laurie Murphy of Danville; sisters Lillie Roller, Ina Wolford and Sadie Logan, all of Fort Wayne, and Betty Williamson of Rosemead, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by husbands Vern J. Walser Jr., and John T. Goelz. Services were Monday at Sunset Funeral Home, Danville. Burial was at Resurrection Cemetery.

Willeadean Robison Conley, 92, of Dalton, Ga., a member of United Methodist Church in Columbia City, Ind., died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at Ridgewood Nursing Manor. The Kosciusko County, Ind., native had taught at Larwill, Ind., School and was a member of Columbia City, Ind., Order of Eastern Star Chapter 65.
