Garfield Bryant Sr., 95, of Fort Wayne, a 73-year member of Turner Chapel AME Church, died Friday, April 5, 2002, at St. Joseph Hospital.

"He loved his family and enjoyed visiting the sick." The Brunson, S.C., native retired from Hagerman Construction Co. after 46 years of service. Surviving are his wife, Willa; sons Robert of Fort Wayne, Garfield Jr. of South Bend and James A. of Chester, Pa.; a sister, Martha Bryant of Bronx, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Services are noon Friday at Turner Chapel AME Church, 836 E. Jefferson St., with calling one hour before services. Burial will be at Lindenwood Cemetery.

Fort Wayne

Carl R. Breman, 76, of Fort Wayne, a retired machine operator, died Monday, April 8, 2002, at Parkview Hospital.

The Fort Wayne native retired in 1993 from Zollner Corp. after 42 years of service. He was a member of UAW Local 2357, Zollner Quarter Century Club, Navy Club 245, Eagles Aerie 3164 and Trinity Episcopal Church. He was a World War II Navy veteran. Surviving are his wife, Helen A.; two grandchildren; one stepgrandchild; and one stepgreat-grandchild. He was preceded in death by daughters Carla A. Cole and Christine K. Breman. Services are 1 p.m. Thursday at D.O. McComb& Sons Lakeside Park Funeral Home, 1140 Lake Ave., with calling from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today. Burial will be at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Donna J. Westerfield, 72, of Fort Wayne, a former school secretary, died Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at home.

"Donna's life revolved around her family, and she enjoyed special times with her six grandchildren." The Canton, Ill., native had worked in Davenport, Iowa, and at Huber, Hunt& Nichols Construction in Indianapolis as an executive secretary. She was a member of the Methodist Church. She enjoyed bowling, fishing and watching old movies. Surviving are her husband, Gerald P.; daughters Lane Utterback and Emily Blackman, both of Fort Wayne, Tracy Phelps of Phoenix and Laurie Fisher of Kansas City, Mo.; sons Martin of Greenwood and Mitchell of Fort Wayne; a sister, Pauline Casey of Cheshire, Conn.; a brother, Darren Oaks of Canton, Ill.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. A brother preceded her in death. Memorial services are 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Elzey-Patterson-Rodak Home for Funerals, 6810 Old Trail Road, with calling from 5:30 p.m. until services. Joseph Reese, 63, of Fort Wayne, a retired truck driver, died Sunday, April 7, 2002, at Hospice Home of Northeast Indiana.

The Browns, Ala., native was retired from Builders Transport after 15 years of service. He was a member of the Spiritual Church of Israel for more than 20 years and was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He had served in the U.S. Army. Surviving are a daughter, Angela Reese of Indianapolis; brothers Bossie of Akron, Ohio, and Oliver Robinson of Bessemer, Ala.; and sisters Sarah Daniels of Akron, Ohio, and Willie Mae Williams of Marion Junction, Ala. Services are 11 a.m. Monday at Carmichael Funeral Service, 831 E. Jefferson Blvd., with calling one hour before services. Burial will be at Lindenwood Cemetery.

Mary "Helen" TenBarge, 83, of New Haven, a member of St. Joseph Hospital Auxiliary, died Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at St. Joseph Hospital.

The Evansville native was a homemaker, and a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and Rosary Sodality. She was a volunteer for St. Joseph Hospital since 1975 and foster parent for Fort Wayne Catholic Charities for 28 years. Surviving are daughters Theresa Ziegler of New Haven and Sue Imel of Fort Wayne; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice P., and a son, Robert P. Prayer services at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at E. Harper& Son Funeral Home, 740 Indiana 930 E., New Haven, precede Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 943 Powers St., New Haven. Calling is from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday with an 8:30 p.m. vigil service at the funeral home. Burial will be at St. John Catholic Cemetery. The Fort Wayne native taught from 1978 to 1994 at Concordia Lutheran High School, where he was head football coach for six years. He also had taught at North Side High School, where he was assistant coach for two years. He was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church and American Legion Post 47, and a Korean War U.S. Army veteran. Surviving are his wife, Beverly; daughters Lori Ensley and Janet Ely, both of Fort Wayne; sons Dr. Steven of Fort Wayne and Paul of Woodburn; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Services are 10 a.m. Friday at Concordia Lutheran Church, 4245 Lake Ave., with calling one hour before services. Calling is also from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at D.O. Dyer of Fort Wayne; and an adopted daughter, Jean Lee of Fort Wayne. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dwight E. Velma L. Shank, 89, of Huntertown and formerly of Eel River Township and Auburn died Wednesday, July 3, 2002, at home.

The Putnam County, Ohio, native with her husband ran a mint distillery, selling mint to plants in Indiana and Michigan and also raised a variety of vegetables for the company that made and distributed V-8 vegetable juice. She was a member of Huntertown United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Order of Eastern Star 136 in Churubusco and Huntertown Home Progress Club. Surviving are her husband, Glenn A.; a son, Gerald of Fort Wayne; daughters Jean Ryan and Virginia Harrod, both of Fort Wayne; sisters Gladys Schey of Paulding, Ohio, and Audrey Hollis of Garrett; 15 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a son, Robert L., a brother and a sister. Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at Huntertown United Methodist Church, 16021 Lima Road, with calling one hour before services. Welch of Huntington; his mother, Rita M. of Fort Wayne; brothers William, Keith and Larry, all of Fort Wayne, Edward of California and Kenny of Waterloo; 13 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and one step great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond, a sister and two brothers.
