Marcella M. Evrard

DENVER -- A funeral Mass for Marcella M. Evrard, 73, of Goshen, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, at St. Mary-of-the-Woods Village Church, St. Mary-of-the-Woods.

She died at 8:38 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1999, in Goshen.

Born Jan. 7, 1926, in Vigo County, she was the daughter of Edward Victor and Frances O’Donnell McIntyre. In 1957, she was married to Charles D. Evrard, who died Sept. 11, 1978.

Mrs. Evrard was a graduate of the Laboratory School and St. Mary-of-the-Woods College and attended Indiana State Teachers’ College for post-graduate work. Prior to her marriage, she taught in Illinois and in Earl Park, Crawfordsville and New Goshen, Ind.

She was a member of Alpha Sorority and the National Council of Catholic Women, and was a lifetime member of St. Mary-of-the-Woods College Alumnae Association and Vigo County Historical Society. For several years, she served on the Terre Haute Deanery Catholic School Board and as chairperson of the NCCW Catholic Charities’ annual Christmas store.

As a member of St. Mary-of-the-Woods Village Church, she served on the parish board and was active in the Mission Circle.

Surviving are three daughters, Helen M. Piotter and her husband Glen, Macy, Karen A. Wadsworth and her husband Lewis, Goshen, and Marcia "Skitz" Evrard, West Terre Haute; eight grandchildren, Pamela, Edward, Jenifer, Charles Daniel, Valerie and Sarah Wadsworth, all of Goshen, and Bridget and Arnold Piotter, both of Macy; two brothers, Edward J. McIntyre, Cincinnati, Ohio, and James F. McIntyre and his wife Lucille, Cherry Hill, N.J.; five nieces; three nephews; and 12 great-nieces and great-nephews.

Two sisters, Miriam Kane and Kathleen Skelly, one brother Daniel McIntyre and his wife Patricia, preceded in death.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 8, in McClain Funeral Home, and one hour before the funeral Mass on Saturday, Aug. 14, at the church.

Father Larry Richardt will officiate at the funeral Mass. Burial will be in St. Mary-of-the-Woods Village Cemetery.

Cremation will take place with memorial arrangements pending.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of Providence Retirement Fund, St. Mary-of-the-Woods, IN 47876-1093 and a favorite charity.

Jason L. ‘Jake’ Stewart

Jason L. "Jake" Stewart, 69, of 8812N 100E, Delphi, died Thursday at his residence.

Arrangements are pending at Marocco Funeral Chapel.

Richard J. Ewing

WINAMAC -- Services for Richard J. Ewing, 71, of 1624N 300W, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Peter’s Catholic Church.

Mr. Ewing died at 5:16 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1999, in Pulaski Memorial Hospital.

Born April 11, 1928, in Winamac, he was the son of Edward J. and Anna Mary Smith Ewing. On July 23, 1955, he was married in Winamac to Jane E. Whipple, who survives.

Mr. Ewing, a self-employed painter, previously worked for the Pulaski County Journal for 25 years and the Indiana Highway Department.

He was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church and was a 4th Degree Knight and past Grand Knight of the Winamac Knights of Columbus.

A lifelong resident of Winamac, he was a member of Winamac High School Athletic Boosters and enjoyed attending Winamac band and sporting events.

Also surviving are one daughter, Peggy J. Surbey and her husband Jeff, Westfield; three sons, Michael R. Ewing, Battle Ground, James J. Ewing and his wife Deb, Carmel, and Patrick A. Ewing and his wife Theresa, Swanton, Ohio; and two sisters, Dorothy and Eva Ewing, both of Winamac.

Preceding in death were one son, Thomas Lee Ewing; one sister, Kathryn Pletka; two brothers, William and Ralph Ewing; two half sisters, Anne Sullivan and Olive Grelck; and one half brother, Ed Ewing.

The Rev. John Hoying will officiate at the services. Burial, with military rites, will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today and after 8 a.m. Saturday in Frain Mortuary, where the rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. tonight.

Rosemary Jester Wetli

FLORA -- Services for Rosemary Jester Wetli, 79, of O’Fallon, Mo., former Carroll County resident, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in Baker Funeral Home.

She died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1999, in O’Fallon.

Burial will be in Zion Cemetery, Bringhurst.

Friends may call one hour before services Monday in the funeral home.

Hermaleen Anderson

PERU -- Services for Hermaleen Anderson, 85, of 317 Blair Pike, will be held at 2 p.m. today in Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home.

She died at 2:45 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999, in Dukes Memorial Hospital.

Dr. E. Dean Fager will officiate at the services. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Francis John "Frank" Sera

KOKOMO -- Francis John "Frank" Sera, 78, of Kokomo, died at 2:25 p.m. Saturday in his residence.

Arrangements are pending at Ellers Mortuary, Main Street Chapel.

Jason T. ‘Jake’ Stewart

Services for Jason T. "Jake" Stewart, 69, of 8812N County Road 100E, Burrows, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in All Saints Catholic Church.

He died at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999, in his residence.

Born Aug. 4, 1930, in Burrows, he was the son of Frederick and Margaret Groninger Stewart. On Dec. 1, 1956, he was married to Catherine Graf, who survives.

Mr. Stewart attended Burrows grade school and graduated from Delphi High School in 1948.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served four years in Korea, and belonged to American Legion Post 60 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3790.

A diesel electrician on the Pennsylvania, Penn-Central and Conrail Railroads, he retired in 1990. He also was a member of the Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and attended All Saints Catholic Church.

Mr. Stewart liked gardening, hunting mushrooms and fixing the "unfixable." Most of all, he loved being with his grandchildren.

Also surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Marla and Tim Young, Logansport; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Mark Stewart, Camden, and Fred and Carol Stewart, Burrows; one sister, Susie Stewart, Delphi; and six grandchildren, Matthew, Megan and Michael Young, Logansport, and Jason, Kylie and Ty Stewart, Burrows.

Two brothers and one sister preceded in death.

Father Leo Haigerty and Father Alex Paternoster will officiate at the services. Burial, with military rites, will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today in Marocco Funeral Chapel, where a scripture service will be held at 7 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to All Saints Catholic School.

Grover R. Layer

ROYAL CENTER -- Services for Grover R. Layer, 87, of Royal Center, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday in Caley United Methodist Church.

He died at 9:29 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999, in Logansport Memorial Hospital.

Born Nov. 6, 1911, in Greentown, he was the son of Simon Peter and Mary Benson Layer. On Jan. 2, 1932, in the Grace EUB parsonage in Royal Center, he was married to Beulah DeWitt, who survives.

Mr. Layer was a retired machine operator for Switches, Inc. He was a member of Caley United Methodist Church and enjoyed going to church as well as teaching Sunday School. He also liked to collect clocks and attend antique auctions.

Also surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Lee and June Layer, Seffner, Fla., and Everett and Gillea Layer, Royal Center; one daughter and son-in-law, Ellen and Victor Sell, Royal Center; one daughter-in-law, Joyce Layer, Royal Center; one half brother, Ernest Gunter, Star City; one stepbrother, Edward Gunter, Royal Center; 15 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

One son, Ernest Layer, two brothers, one sister, and three half brothers preceded in death.

The Rev. Tom DeFries will officiate at the services. Burial will be in Thompson Cemetery, Royal Center.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today in Harrison-Metzger Funeral Home, Royal Center Chapel, and one hour before services Monday in the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Caley United Methodist Church.

Sharon Rose Murphy

Sharon Rose Murphy, 54, of Indianapolis, died Saturday in Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis.

Arrangements are pending at Marocco Funeral Chapel.

Eva Stapleton

PERU -- Services for Eva Stapleton, 82, of Peru, will be held at 2 p.m. today in First Assembly of God.

She died at 3:40 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999, in Dukes Memorial Hospital.

The Rev. John Thomas and the Rev. Bill McCoy will officiate at the services. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Peru.

Flowers-Leedy Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Robert "Bob" L. Clark Sr.

SNELLVILLE, Ga. -- Graveside services, with full military rites, for Robert "Bob" L. Clark, 70 , of Snellville, Ga., will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Andersonville National Cemetery in Andersonville, Ga.

He died Saturday, Aug. 7, 1999.

Born in Carroll County, he was a retired television repair technician and a retired Army veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars.

Surviving are his wife, Ann Clark, of Snellville; one son, William Clark, of Peru; one daughter, Linda McMillin, of Moore, Okla.; one brother and sister-in-law, Donald E. and Virginia E. Clark, of Logansport; one sister, Rosaline Jones, of Logansport; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. today in the Tim Stewart Funeral Home, Snellville Chapel.

Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the American Cancer Society-Gwinnett County Unit, 3545 Cruse Road, Suite 102, Lawrenceville, Ga., 30044.

Clyde McKim

Clyde McKim, 85, of Logansport, died at 10:15 p.m. Sunday in Miller’s Merry Manor.

Arrangements are pending at Kroeger Funeral Home.

John Rolland Sholty Sr.

PERU -- Services for John Rolland Sholty Sr., 62, of 630 E. Fifth St., will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Flowers-Leedy Funeral Home.

Mr. Sholty died at 7 a.m. Friday, Aug. 6,1999, in Dukes Memorial Hospital.

Born Sept. 2,1936, in Logansport, he was the son of John A. and Kathryn N. Byers Sholty. On Sept. 10, 1958, he was married to Milagros Delos Santos, who survives.

Also surviving are his mother, Peru; one daughter and her husband, Puriza and Russell Warywoda, Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.; four sons and daughters-in-law, John and Barbara Sholty Jr., Victorville, Calif., Michael and Shirley Sholty, San Diego, Calif., Glenn and Melissa Sholty, Peru, and Arturo and Mila Delos Santos, San Diego, Calif.; three brothers, Terry Sholty, Boonsboro, Md., Danny Sholty, Peru, and William Sholty, Kokomo; one sister, Nyla Kay, Durham, N.C.; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Dean Fager will officiate at the services. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Peru.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home.

The family request that love offerings be made to the funeral home.

Francis John ‘Frank’ Sera

KOKOMO -- Graveside services for former Logansport resident Francis John "Frank" Sera, 78, of Kokomo, will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at McKinley Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Winamac.

Mr. Sera died at 2:25 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, 1999, in his residence.

Born Aug. 19, 1920, in Griffith, he was the son of Andrew and Marie Ann Banard Sera.

He retired in 1984 from Delco Electronics where he had been a tool and die maker for over 20 years. Prior to that, Mr. Sera had worked at Chrysler Corporation.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, he had served during World War II.

He was a member of UAW Local 292, Cushman Owners of America, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3790 and Eagles No. 323, both in Logansport, American Legion Post No. 0418, Walton, Masonic Lodge No. 262, F&AM, Winamac, AARP and United Commercial Travelers.

Surviving are two sons, Leo Sera, Helena, Mont., and John Sera and his wife, Cindy, Kokomo; four grandchildren, Derk Sera, Skylar Sera, Jonathan Sera and Jennifer Burgess; one stepgrandchild, Chadd Fisher; one great-granddaughter, Samantha Burgess; one stepgreat-grandson, Jonah Fisher; and three sisters, Lillian Stonefelt, of North Carolina, and Elizabeth and Kate Button, both of Winamac.

Two brothers preceded in death.

The Rev. Paul Enochs will officiate at the services. Burial will be with military rites.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today in Ellers Mortuary Main Street Chapel, where a Masonic service will be held at 7:30 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to Saint Joseph At Home Hospice Services.

Glenn ‘Shorty’ Garbert

GALVESTON -- Services for Glenn "Shorty" Garbert, 90, of Walton Manor Apartments, Walton, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in Murray Funeral Home, Galveston Chapel.

He died at 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 8, 1999, in Sycamore Village Nursing Home, Kokomo.

The Rev. Ed Brock will officiate at the services. Burial will be in Galveston Cemetery.

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Galveston Ambulance Service.
