Richard D. Filip

KOKOMO -- Services for Richard D. Filip, 69, of Kokomo, will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in the Zion Tabernacle Church, 404 W. Jefferson St.

He died at 6:13 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, in Howard Community Hospital.

Born June 27, 1930, in Hartland, Ill., he was the son of Foster W. and Frances L. Cramer Amos, who survive in Kokomo. On July 4, 1954, in Kokomo, he was married to Frances M. Cron, who survives.

Mr. Filip was a 1950 graduate of Kokomo High School and the owner and president of R.D. Filip, Inc., which he founded in 1985. He also was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served during the Korean conflict.

He was a member of Zion Tabernacle in Kokomo, the Howard County Chamber of Commerce, the Logansport Eagles Lodge and the International Sanitary Supply Association.

Also surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Jennifer Filip, Kokomo; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Gisele L. Filip, Kokomo, Cynthia L. and Rick Heaton, Noblesville, and Teri and Jack Weaver, Kokomo; five grandchildren, Brent Weaver, Amanda Weaver, Jennifer Wiggs, Jackie Filip and Eric Filip; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Arlene and Dick Durham, Troy, Ohio, and Donna Dickason, St. Charles, Mo.

The Rev. N.P. Urshan will officiate at the services. Burial, with military honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1152, will be in Albright Cemetery.

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Fenn & Shirley Mortuary, Colonial Chapel, 1315 W. Lincoln Road, and one hour before the services Monday in the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Howard Community Hospital Oncology Department, c/o the Howard Community Hospital Foundation.

Ruth Bernice Sumpter

Services for Ruth Bernice Sumpter, 93, Chase Center, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 4, in Fisher Funeral Chapel.

She died at 9:10 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999, in Chase Center.

Born Nov. 20, 1905, in Grant County, she was the daughter of Charles Clarence and Lucy Barbara Strawsburg Haynes. On June 15, 1930, she was married in Converse to Joseph William Sumpter, who was the manager of the G.E. Bursley Grocery Co. in Logansport for 25 years. He preceded in death Feb. 20, 1965.

Mrs. Sumpter was a deeply dedicated, community-minded citizen of Logansport after moving to the community in 1931.

She was a teacher and her career spanned 19 years. A 1923 graduate of Sweetser High School in Grant County, she earned a teaching license from Manchester College. She taught in the Mier Elementary School and Sweetser Elementary School. After earning a bachelor of science degree at Manchester College, she taught at Walton Elementary School and then at McKinley Elementary School in Logansport until her retirement in 1974.

A life member of the Cass County Retired Teachers Association, she also was a member of the Indiana Retired Teacher Association and the National Retired Teacher Association.

Since 1931, she has been a member of the Ninth Street Christian Church where she taught in the Sunday School Primary Department for many years. She also was an active member of the Christian Women's Missionary Society, Christian Women's Fellowship, the CWF Group Six and the Fidelity Sunday School Class.

She served on the Emily E. Flinn Board in Marion and was a member of the board Admissions Committee for over 12 years.

She was a member of the Cass County Historical Society. She also was a member of the Cass County Family Y and served on its board for six years. Her memberships also included the Honorary Second Mother's Club for over 60 years, and she was a member and former officer of the Logansport Rose Society.

Surviving are one daughter, Barbara Boerger, Syracuse; one son, Joseph C. Sumpter, Fort Wayne; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Two brothers, Wilfred and Lawrence, and two sisters, Iva and Edith, preceded in death.

The Rev. James Beaumont will officiate the services. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Friends may call one hour before the services.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ninth Street Christian Church Building Fund and the Chase Center Aviary Fund.

Addie Marie Miller

Graveside services for Addie Marie Miller, 85, formerly of 15 W. Richardville St. and Chase Center, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 27, in Mount Hope Cemetery.

She died at 12:20 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999, in Chase Center.

Born Feb. 2, 1914, in Fulton County, she was the daughter of Omer and Edna May Schall Lewis. On June 23, 1951, she was married in Logansport to Virgil L. Miller, who died Aug. 20, 1966.

She was employed with RBM Manufacturing for 30 years before she retired in 1977 and was a member of the Essex Wire Thirty Year Club.

Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Peter and Shelby Shepherd, Logansport; two daughters and one son-in-law, Twylah and Wayne Cree, Las Vegas, Nev., and Myra Miller, Logansport; one brother and sister-in-law, Ermil "Bud" and Fern Lewis, Culver; one sister, Hazel Anderson, New Carlisle; eight grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Three sisters and one grandson preceded in death.

There will be no visitation. Callers should arrive at Kroeger Funeral Home at 1:45 p.m. on the day of services.

Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

Kroeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Lucille Miller

Services for Mary Lucille Miller, 71, of 4540 Timberlane, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Fisher Funeral Chapel.

She died at 11:15 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999, in Miller's Merry Manor.

Born March 13, 1928, in Momence, Ill., she was the daughter of Lloyd and Lucille Riggle Brookshine. On June 24, 1953, in Watseka, Ill., she was married to John Forest Miller, who died Dec. 12, 1988.

Mrs. Miller retired in 1990 after 23 years as receptionist for General Tire. She was also a member of the Flora United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Michael Downham, Logansport; one grandson, Joshua Merritt Gillum, Lafayette; a sister, Wiladean Brookshine, Dixon, Miss.; one nephew, Clark Gehrke, San Jose, Calif.; and two cousins, John Crooks, Albuquerque, N.M., and Joene Crooks, Orlando, Fla.

The Rev. Donald Ruhl will officiate at the services. Burial will be in Maple Lawn Cemetery, Flora.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Americo J. 'Bud' Mordenti

A funeral Mass for Americo J. "Bud" Mordenti, 85, of Logansport, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in All Saints Catholic Church.

He died at 8:10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, 1999, in Miller's Merry Manor.

Born May 28, 1914, in Logansport, he was the son of Aristide and Maria Rigi Mordenti. On June 18, 1938, in St. Vincent Church in Logansport, he was married to Lena I. Passerini, who survives.

Mr. Mordenti retired from Ray's Creamery. A 60-year member of the Logansport Eagles, he also was a member of the Knights of Columbus, where he served two terms as Grand Knight, as well as the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus.

He was named the "Man of the Year" by the William Paca Lodge Sons of Italy in 1988 on the occasion of his and his wife's golden wedding anniversary. And he was a member of All Saints Catholic Church.

Also surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Diana Mordenti, Logansport, and Bob and Sue Mordenti, Cary, Ill.; one daughter and son-in-law, Susie and Dave Dickerson, Logansport; one sister, Betty Price , Lafayette; five grandchildren, Tony Dickerson, Dan Dickerson and Dannan Mordenti, all of Logansport, Rae Jean Podgorski, Evanston, Ill., and Joe Mordenti, Arlington Heights, Ill.; two great-grandchildren, Connor Dickerson and Lena K. Dickerson; and several nieces and nephews.

A daughter, Mary Catherine Mordenti, and a sister, Ada Mallette, preceded in death.

Fathers Donald Gross and Leo Haigerty will officiate at the Mass. Entombment will be in Ever-Rest Memorial Park Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday in Kroeger Funeral Home, where the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus will stand guard during visitation. The rosary will be recited at 7 p.m., followed by a William Paca Lodge memorial service.

Memorial contributions may be made to All Saints Catholic School and the Gibault School for Boys.

Jerry L. Campbell

Jerry L. Campbell, 60, of 2808 State Road 35 South, died this morning in Saint Joseph Hospital & Health Center, Kokomo.

Arrangements are pending at Fisher Funeral Chapel.

Catherine V. Sabol

ROCHESTER -- Catherine V. Sabol, 85, of Life Care Center of Rochester, died Tuesday in her residence.

Arrangements are pending at Baran & Son Funeral Home in Whiting. Foster & Good Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Julia Lynn Martin

Services for Julia Lynn Martin, 50, of Logansport, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Kroeger Funeral Home.

She died at 6:21 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999, in St. Vincent Hospital, Indianapolis.

Born Nov. 30, 1948, in Rensselaer, she was the daughter of Arlie Lee and Marge Clark Smith.

A 1966 Pioneer High School graduate, Mrs. Martin retired as an administrative assistant from Big R Store, a job she enjoyed very much, after 16 years of employment.

She loved her grandchildren very much and enjoyed cooking and traveling.

Surviving are her mother and stepfather, Marge and Richard C. Carty, Logansport; two sons, Shawn Wooldridge and his wife, Tori Wooldridge, Franklin, Pa., and Shane Hosler and his fiance, Carmin Peterson, Logansport; A brother and sister-in-law, Mikel and Rhonda Smith, Logansport; one stepbrother, Marty Lee Carty, Diana, Fla.; two stepsisters, Leisha Ann Carty, Waynesville, N.C., and Ginger Lynn Diedrich and her husband Vincent Diedrich, Mims, Fla.; two grandchildren, Ty Wooldridge and Julia Wooldridge; a nephew, Mike Smith, Logansport; and several stepnieces and stepnephews as well as additional family members residing in Rensselaer.

Her father, Arlie Lee Smith, preceded in death.

The Rev. Milford Smith will officiate at the services. Burial will be in Delphi IOOF Cemetery, Delphi.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Foundation and the American Heart Association.

Henry Clifford Rans

WINAMAC -- Services for Henry Clifford Rans, 85, of 624 E. 13th St., will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Frain Mortuary.

He died at 7:50 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999, in Pulaski Health Care Center.

Born Aug. 29, 1914, in Winamac, he was the son of Emanuel E. and Nellie M. Smith Rans. On Aug. 29, 1970, in Winamac, he was married to Faye I. Locke Retschlag, who died April 17, 1993.

An U.S. Army veteran, Mr. Rans served during World War II, receiving the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

Having living most of his life in Winamac, he worked at several local grocery stores as a clerk, including Russell's Old Trading Post, Alexander's and Sanders grocery stores.

Mr. Rans was a member of the First Christian Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1728 and the American Legion Post 71, all of Winamac.

Surviving are one stepson and daughter-in-law, William and Mardell Retschlag, both of Winamac; three grandsons, Mark Hoffman, Mike Hoffman and Randy Retschlag; one granddaughter, Tonya Sage; four great-grandchildren, Kyleigh Sage, John Zachary Sage, Marena Jo Fleury and Collin William Retschlag; one brother, Ray Rans of Winamac; two sisters, Alice Garling of Hobart and Florence Barrett of Gary and several nieces and nephews.

One brother, Earl Edwin Rans, and one sister, Fern Duncan, preceded in death.

Pastor Tom W. Jones will officiate at the services. Burial will be in Winamac Cemetery, where graveside military services by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion will be conducted.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and after 8 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church.

Willis L. Lee

GALVESTON -- Services for Willis L. Lee, 59, Galveston, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Murray Funeral Home, Galveston Chapel.

He died at 4:45 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24, 1999, in St. Vincent Hospital, Indianapolis.

Born March 2, 1940, in Jonesboro, Ark., he was the son of James L. and Ella L. Dean Lee. He was married Aug. 16, 1960, in Diehlstadt, Mo., to E. Faye Humphrey, who survives.

Mr. Lee was employed as a routeman for Culligan for 33 years. From 1960 to 1966, he had been a milk routeman for Glassburn Trucking.

Also surviving are two sons, Richard "Rick" Lee and Troy Lee and his wife, Margaret, all of Walton; two brothers, Jim Lee, Reno, Nev., and Kenneth Lee, Kokomo; three sisters, Bonnie Pledger, North Little Rock, Ark., Winnie Stevens, Peru, and Iris Hayes, Oran, Mo.; and five grandchildren, Nathan, Keith, Emily, Stephanie and Chad Lee.

His parents and two infant brothers preceded in death.

Burial will be in Center Cemetery in Young America.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

James Paul Adams

Services for James Paul Adams, 75, of Logansport, will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Kroeger Funeral Home.

He died at 11:12 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999, in Logansport Memorial Hospital.

Born May 1, 1924, in Whitefish, Mont., he was the son of Lester C. and Alice Pauline Shreve Adams. On June 19, 1948, in Logansport, he was married to Annabelle "Anne" Smith, who survives.

Mr. Adams retired in 1970 as a sergeant in the U.S. Army. He served in the U.S. Navy for six years during World War II, and then in the U.S. Army for 18 years during the Korean War and Vietnam War, receiving the following awards and decorations: Bronze Medal (Vietnam), six Good Conduct Medals, three Army Commendation Medals, American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Army Occupation (Germany) Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Vietnam Service Medal.

Over the years, he was active in the following Masonic bodies: Past Master, Tipton Lodge 33 F.&A.M.; Orient Lodge 272 F.&A.M.; member, Advisory Council & Past Chapter Dad, Logansport Demolay; member, Murat Shrine; member, Logansport Shrine Club; member, Logansport Shrine Club Third Wheel Patrol; member, Super Excellent Masters; Past High Priest, Logan Chapter 2 R.A.M.; Past Ill. Master, Logansport Council 11 C.M.; Past Commander, St. John Commandery 24, K.T.; member, Council of Annointed High Priests; member, Indiana Council of Trice Ill. Masters; member, Indiana Past Commanders Association K.T.; member, Fort Wayne Scottish Rite; past president, Cass County Scottish Rite Club; holder of Knights of the York Cross of Honor; member, Robert A. Woods Priory 62; member, Indiana Priory 8; member, Lafayette-Preceptory 3 Yeoman of York; member, Kokomo Chapter 104 R.A.M.; member, Kokomo Council 60 C.M.; member, Kokomo Commandery 36 K.T.; member, Fidelity Chapter 58 Order of Eastern Star; member, Apperson Council 307 Allied Masonic Degrees; member, Sagamore Valley 133 York Rite College; and Illustrious Master of the Year-Group 4 1996.

A member of the Ebenezer Methodist Church in Macy, he enjoyed fishing, television, his computer, reading and motorcycles.

Also surviving are four sons and two daughters-in-law, James L. Adams, Portsmouth, Va., Alan L. Adams, Nashville, Tenn., Robert S. and Faye Adams, Martinez, Ga., and Paul R. and Lisa Adams, Hardeeville, S.C.; a daughter; Alice A. Mow, Rochester; a sister, Alice Juanita Brew, Costa Mesa, Calif.; 11 grandchildren, Lori, T.J., Jennifer, James, David, Donald, Robert, Delorea, Justin, Troy and Rachel; three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and two cats, Monkee and Shadoe.

One brother, William R. Adams, preceded in death.

The Rev. Rick Stone will officiate at the services. Burial, with military honors, will be in Bethel Cemetery, Cass County.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home, where a Knights Templar service will take place at 7 p.m., followed by a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners' Children's Hospitals.

Dorothy F. Conner Borden

WINAMAC -- Dorothy F. Conner Borden, 83, of 624 E. 13th St., died at 11:06 a.m. Sunday in Pulaski Health Care Center.

Arrangements are pending at Frain Mortuary.

Carr E. Beecher

WINAMAC -- Carr E. Beecher, of Denver, died this morning in his residence.

Arrangements are pending at Frain Mortuary.

Marjean Woods Klepinger

LEBANON -- Services for Marjean Woods Klepinger, 44, of 1002 Redwood Drive in Lebanon, formerly of Logansport, were held at 11 a.m. today in Myers Chapel of Memories, 1502 N. Lebanon St.

She died at 1:35 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999, in Wishard Hospital, Indianapolis, of burns suffered in a fire at her residence.

The Rev. Randy Blankenship officiated at the services. Burial was in Lincoln Memory Gardens, Boone County.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Eagle Creek Assembly of God in Indianapolis and the Trinity Tabernacle, also in Indianapolis.
