BERNICE SORGIUS

OTWELL - Bernice Sorgius, 92, died at 12:26 a.m. Monday at her residence.

Born Sept. 23, 1911, in Birdseye, she was the daughter of Jesse Cleveland and Minnie Alice (Peterson) Sutton.

A 1928 graduate of Petersburg High School, she attended Oakland City College, where she obtained a rural school license. She taught at Bowman, Algiers and Otwell schools. She was a member of Otwell United Methodist Church.

She is survived by stepsons, W.F. "Bill" Sorgius and Gerald (Rip) Sorgius, both of Otwell; six step grandchildren, Gary Sorgius of Evansville, Teresa Kruse of Ft. Branch, Ronnie Sorgius of Jasper, David Sorgius, Rhonda Jochim and Scott Sorgius, all of Otwell; 16 step great-grandchildren; four step great-great-grandchildren; and one niece, Donna Mikels of Petersburg.

Her husband, Gerald E. (Gabe) Sorgius, died Dec. 7, 1987.

One brother, Farrell Sutton, and one sister, Fay Buckley, are also deceased.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Harris Funeral Home, Petersburg, with Rev. Bill Cash officiating. Burial will be in Otwell Cemetery.

Visitation is from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 8 a.m. until time of services Thursday at the funeral home.

Preferred memorials are to Otwell United Methodist Church.

Henry W. "Hank" Plahn III

VINCENNES - Henry W. "Hank" Plahn III, 48, 2000 Prospect Ave., Vincennes, passed away at 10 a.m. Monday at Good Samaritan Hospital.

He was born Sept. 2, 1955, in the Champaign-Urbana, Ill., area, the son of Eleanor (Moyer) Plahn and the late Henry W. Plahn Jr.

He was a 1973 graduate of Lincoln High School and was a CAT scan and special procedures technician at Daviess Community Hospital and was a member of the American Society of Radiologic technologists. He was a member of the Old Cathedral Catholic Church, Elk's and served as an IHSAA referee for baseball, volleyball and football. He was an avid sports enthusiast and enjoyed all local sports.

On Oct. 8, 1977, he was united in marriage to Janet Coers who survives him.

He is survived by his spouse of 26 years, Janet Plahn, children, Katie Plahn of Evansville, Matt Plahn and Izzy Plahn, both at home; his mother, Eleanor (Moyer) Plahn of Terre Haute; and a brother Bill Plahn of St. Louis, Mo.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at the Old Cathedral with Fr. John Schipp, Fr. Joseph Swartz and Fr. Kenneth Grahler officiating. He will be laid to rest at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Duesterberg-Fredrick Funeral Home, where a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. to close the visitation.

Memorial contributions can be made in his memory to the Rivet High School Athletic Department.

Marjorie H. Gee

ODON - Marjorie H. Gee, 84, died at 8:20 a.m. Tuesday at Ketcham Memorial Center.

Born June 28, 1919, in Martin County, she was the daughter of Eph and Hester (Cunningham) Williams.

A homemaker, she was a member of Odon First Christian Church.

She is survived by her husband, Herbert True Gee, whom she married Oct. 12, 1941; one daughter, Katherin A. Bernaix of Marion; three sons, Ted F. Gee of Greenwood, Fred D. Gee of Martinsville and Donald Eugene Gee of Hamilton, Ill.; one sister, Jeanette Webster of Indianapolis; one brother, Garland Williams of Indianapolis; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchildren.

Two sisters, Berniece Rost and Irene Williams, are deceased.

The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Odon First Christian Church, with Bro. Richard Crabtree officiating. Burial will be in Walnut Hill Cemetery.

Visitation is from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Poindexter-Hall & McClure Funeral Home, Odon Chapel.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials may be made to The American Cancer Society or The Diabetes Association.

Vonlue Barber

HUDSONVILLE - VonLue Barber, 83, died at 8:48 a.m. Monday at St. Vincent's Hospital, Indianapolis.

Born July 5, 1920, in Daviess County, she was the daughter of Andrew and Dessie (Webber) Himsel.

She graduated from Glendale High School and was a member of the Jolly Co-Workers Home Economic Club and Hudsonville United Methodist Church. She had been a Sunday School teacher for many years. She was a song leader at church and had Bible study at home. She was an avid fisherman.

Her husband, John Wilbur Barber, whom she married April 27, 1938, died Nov. 26, 2001. A son, Hal Barber, and stepgrandson, Jarit Wininger, are also deceased.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sue Ann and William Armes of Washington; three sons and daughters-in-law, Wilbur and Glenna Barber and Andy and Teresa Barber, all of Hudsonville, and Lonnie and Judy Barber of Glendale; 10 grandchildren, Lisa Baugh, Dane Barber, Robin Blackburn, Jill Williams, John E. Barber, Melissa Clark, Cody Barber, Krystle Barber, Shane Armes and Nicole Barber; four stepgrandchildren, Lisa Jones, Brian Faith, Danielle Booker and Zachary Booker; nine great-grandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; one sister, Christena Jones of Hudsonville; and her pet dog, Smokey.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Hudsonville United Methodist Church, with Rev. Clarence Miller officiating. Burial will be in New Veale Creek Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Gill Chapel and after 9:30 a.m. Friday at the church.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy be made as donations to Hudsonville United Methodist Church.

PETERSBURG - Estelline Day, 93, died at 10:45 a.m. Tuesday at Amber Manor Nursing Home, Petersburg.

The funeral is at 11 a.m. Saturday at Harris Funeral Home, Petersburg, with the Rev. Cynthia Jennison officiating. Burial will be in Walnut Hills Cemetery, Petersburg.

Visitiation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and from 8 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home.

Louise Tharp

VINCENNES - Louise E. (Tredway) Tharp, 77, died at 7 a.m. June 14 at her residence.

Born Nov. 14, 1928, in Washington, she was the daughter of Herman Evans and Susan Rainey Evans. Her step-mother was Mary O. Evans, and she is deceased.

She married Merlin Tredway on Oct. 20, 1945, and he died Oct. 4, 1986. She also married Robert Tharp Feb. 13, 1994, and they were married for three years before he passed away.

She received a master's degree in education from Oakland City University and was a substitute teacher for Vincennes University.

She was also involved with St. John's Episcopal Church of Washington, Eastern Star and Eagles Ladies Auxilary No. 414 of Washington.

She is survived by sons and daughter-in-law Dennis and Lucy Tredway, Janesville, Wis., and Herbert Tredway, Washington; daughter and son-in-law Jackie and Chuck Bostick, Petersburg; brother Robert Evans, Washington; step-brother Jack Dillon, Princeton; 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by brothers Herman Evans Jr., and Bernard Lee Evans; step-brother Richard Dillon; sister Robella Evans; and step-sister Joyce Warner.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Saturday at Harris Funeral Home with Rev. Jim Walters officiating. Burial was in the public cemetery in Iva, Ind.

Pallbearers were Kevin Gideon, Kenny Gideon Jr., Kenny Gideon, Eddie Wilkison, John Tredway and Johnny Evans.

Sylvia Cobb

INDIANAPOLIS - Sylvia Cobb, 76, died Sunday.

She was an assembly worker and inspector for Carlisle Industries and attended Liberty Mission Baptist Church.

Her husband, Franklin Cobb, preceded Sylvia in death.

Survivors include her children, Ruth Ann Lawyer, Plainville; Mary Mae Marie Paris, Carthage, Tenn.; Iva Jean Rogers, Indianapolis; Mary Catherine Atwood, Indianapolis; Franklin Elza Thomas Cobb Jr., Indianapolis; and Sandra Dee Giliberto, Indianapolis; sister Edna Hilderstead, Ky.; brother Milford Slone, of South Carolina; step-sister Ruth McMillian, of Kentucky; step-brothers Kenneth McMillian and Charles McMillian, both of Kentucky; nine grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, S.B. Cobb, Elwood.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at G.H.Herrmann Madison Avenue Funeral Home, 5141 Madison Ave., Indianapolis.

Burial will be in Floral Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Magdalena Wagler

MONTGOMERY - Magdalena Wagler, 86, died at 1 p.m. Saturday at her residence.

Born Feb. 3, 1918 in Daviess County, she was the daughter of Joseph K. and Sarah (Lengacher) Wagler. She married Joseph Wagler on June 26, 1941, and he died Jan. 3, 1977.

She was a member of the Old Order Amish.

She is survived by daughters Sarah Kathryn Wagler and Miriam Wagler, Montgomery, and Verna Mae Raber, Hicksville, Ohio; sons Wallace Wagler, Paul Wagler, Ivan Wagler and Joseph Ray Wagler, all of Montgomery; sisters Anna Stoll, Aylmer, Ontario, Canada, and Rachel Graber, Kalona, Iowa; brothers David L. Wagler, Bloomfield, Iowa, Noah L. Wagler, Montgomery, and Abner Wagler, Aylmer, Ontario; 37 grandchildren and 58 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the family residence with home ministers officiating. Burial will be in Stoll Cemetery. Visitation began Sunday at the residence.

Gill Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Rose Burch

LOOGOOTEE - Rose Pauline Burch, 74, died at 10 p.m. Friday at her residence.

Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Martin Catholic Church with burial in St. Martin Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation is from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Brocksmith Funeral Home in Loogootee. There will be a Rosary today at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Darin Gene Healy, 34, 1304 SR 57S, Lot 102, died at 3 p.m. Saturday at his residence.

Born April 2, 1970, he was the son of William L. Healy and Sherry Ann Colbert. He was a 1988 graduate of Washington High School and an operator at Black Beauty Coal Mine. He was also affiliated with New Hope Christian Church and the Glendale Volunteer Fire Department.

He is survived by daughters Megan Healy and Tarin Healy, Washington; father and step-mother, Wanda Healy, Washington; brothers Derrick Healy and Darryl Healy, Washington; and grandmother, Dorothy Colbert, Washington.

He is preceded in death by his mother in 2001 and brother William L. Healy, Jr.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Gill Chapel with Bro. Ron Rayman officiating.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Michael "Mike" Jenne Sr.

Michael "Mike" Jenne Sr., 60, Washington, died recently at St. Mary's Hospital in Evansville.

Born Aug. 11, 1943, in Pike County, he is the son of William and Mable (Holtsclaw) Jenne. He married Donna Jenne Dec. 22, 1961.

He was employed by McCord Corp and trucking for Selg for 28 years and was a member of the Vincennes Avenue Welseyan Church.

He is survived by daughters Melody Purdue and husband Jack Jr., Mindy Lovellete and husband Bob and Darlene Dedrick and husband Ernie, all of Washington; sons Michael Jenne, Jr., and wife Susan, Beech Grove, and Martin Jenne, Washington; grandchildren Stacy Doolin, Cassidy Purdue, Michelle Jennifer Kellman, Michael Brough, Jason Michael Dedrick, Rachel Darlene Dedrick, William Dedrick, Susan Norrick, Brian Jenne, Kayla Jenne and Tyler Jenne; and great-grandchildren Nathan Doolin, Christen Doolin, Zackery Doolin, Crystal Norrick, Andrew Norrick, Alexus Neighbors and Emma Clark; sisters Anna Bell Grubb, Sue McBride and Lois Bland, Washington, Martha Wilson, Polaski, Tenn., and Vickie Auston, Huntingburg; brothers Claude Jenne, Plainfield, Wayne Jenne, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Rick Jenne, Vincennes; and half brothers Bill Risley and Gene Risley, Washington. He is preceded in death by brothers George Jenne and Franklin Jenne and sister Irene Jenne. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Poindexter-Hall and McClure Funeral Home in Wasington with Rev. Jewell Gilley officiating. Burial will be in Sugarland Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today. The family is accepting donations in lieu of flowers.

Viola Lengacher

MONTGOMERY - Viola Lengacher, 84, died at 5:42 p.m. Sunday in the emergency room at Daviess Community Hospital.

Born March 4, 1920, in Daviess County, she was the daughter of Amos and Anna (Graber) Graber.

She was a member of Zion Amish Mennonite Church.

She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, John Jr. and Marlene Lengacher of Cannelburg, Joe and Cindy Lengacher of Odon, Ben and Rita Lengacher of Odon, and Delbert and Diane Lengacher of Loogootee; daughters and sons-in-law, Verna and Amzy Wagler of Odon, Elizabeth and Kenny Swartzentruber of Washington, Rose and Alvin Swartzentruber of Montgomery, and Marilyn and Phil Knepp of Montgomery; 32 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; one sister, Rose Graber of Odon; and three brothers, John Graber of Odon, Amos Graber of Montgomery, and Ben Graber of Montgomery.

Her husband, John Lengacher, whom she married Oct. 24, 1940, died July 17, 1992. One son, Glen Lengacher, one infant grandson, and one infant great-grandson are also deceased.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Zion Amish Mennonite Church, with Bro. Earl Wagler, Bro. Richard Wagler, and Bro. Leroy Lengacher officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation is after 2 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Gill Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Woodrow Wilson Chappell

FORT SMITH, Ark. - Woodrow Wilson Chappell, 91, died July 1 in Fort Smith, Ark.

Born July 15, 1912, in Shoals, he was the son of Benjamin Harrison and Alletha (Sherfick) Chappell.

He served during World War II as a communication specialist in England. He worker as a printer at Master Craft Printing Co. He was a Mason and member of the Christian faith.

He is survived by one son, Daniel Johnson of Lavaca, Ark.; one daughter, Shirley Whitehead of Camarillo, Calif.; two sisters, Benny Dupps of Loogootee, and Roberta Wall of Shreveport, La.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

His wife, Florence P. (Liles) Chappell, preceded him in death. One sister, Helen Yates, and one brother, Robert Chappell, are also deceased.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Bethany Cemetery, with Bro. Matt Merold officiating.

Gill Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

MARGARET 'PEGGY' O'DONNELL PALADINO

CASTRO VALLEY, Calif. - Margaret "Peggy" O'Donnell Paladino passed away in her sleep on July 5 at the age of 86 at her daughter's home in Castro Valley, Calif. She was born in Washington where she eventually met and married James Ellis. They were married exactly one year before he was killed during World War II. She later moved to Denver, Colo., where she met Stephen Paladino at the USO. They married and moved to California and settled in Oakland in 1946, then moved to Castro Valley, Calif., in 1953. That is where she raised her three children and lived happily. Her husband passed away in 1998 at the Veteran's Hospital in Livermore, Calif., at the age of 82.

Peggy will be remembered as a person who was ready to any adventure, from a Who concert to a cruise. She loved her family. She loved all animals, walking and collecting rocks. She was an avid reader from Prokosch to Richard Wright. Friends were welcome anytime and offered a glass of wine.

She leaves daughter Mary Margaret Elbert and husband, Stephen; daughter Stephanie Rosso and husband Tom; son Stephen R. Paladino and wife Rene. She also leaves her grandchildren: Monica Haut, Sam Elbert, Steve Paladino, David Paladino, Anthony Paladino and Nat Paladino; her niece, Kathy Hollander and nephew, Bill Brandt. She is preceded in death by her sister, Nancy Brandt.

She and "Popa" were the best of parents and we wouldn't have changed things for the world. They are dearly missed.

No services will be held. Donations to Alzheimer's Association or to the Veteran's Hospital are preferred.

KENNETH JOHNSON

ELNORA - Kenneth T. Johnson, 96, died at 6:50 p.m. Monday at Ketcham Memorial Center.

Born June 13, 1908, in Daviess County, he was the son of Melvin M. and Sina (Killion) Johnson.

A lifelong Daviess County resident, he worked for 30 years at McCord Corp. in quality control. He was a 50- year member of Masonic Lodge 616 and past member of Shriners.

He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Melvin and Florence Johnson of Monticello; one daughter, Frances K. Johnson of Farmington; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his first wife, Dimple (Hattery) Johnson, and his second wife, Susie L. (Cox) Johnson.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Poindexter-Hall and McClure Funeral Home, Odon. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.

Visitation is from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with a Masonic memorial service at 6 p.m.

Ruth Eleanor Paul

Ruth Eleanor Paul, 80, 1409 Memorial Ave., died unexpectedly at 11:57 p.m. Tuesday at Daviess Community Hospital.

Born April 30, 1924, in Daviess County, she was the daughter of Stancil Reed and Cora (Kilburn) Edwards.

A homemaker, she was a lifetime member of Zion United Methodist Church and attended First Baptist Church.

She is survived by daughters, Patricia Ann Paul of Washington, Virginia Gail Drew of Vincennes, Anita June Singer of San Diego, Calif., and Ruth Elaine (Glen Mac) Armes of Washington; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Edna Theroff of Mesa, Wash.

Her husband, Junior Paul, whom she married May 7, 1941, preceded her in death. One daughter, Carol Huston; one grandson, Aaron Cole Drew; and eight brothers and sisters are also deceased.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Poindexter-Hall and McClure Funeral Home, with Bro. Tim Baxter officiating. Burial will be in Plainville Cemetery.

Visitation is from 10 a.m. until service time on Friday at the funeral home.

KEVIN CHARLES

Kevin J. Charles, 41, Rt. 4, died at 12:05 p.m. Thursday at his residence.

Born Sept. 8, 1962, in Heidelburg, Germany, he was the son of Robert and Barbara (Matteson) Charles.

A graduate of Washington High School, he was a member of Harvest Community Fellowship and was self-employed.

He is survived by his mother, Barbara Charles of Washington; two daughters, Tiffany Lynn Charles of French Lick, and Mariah Nicole Charles of Albion, Ill.; one son, Tyson J. Charles of Montgomery; sister and husband,Cheryl and Kenneth Wright of Washington; brother and wife, Stanley and Carolyn Charles of Indianapolis; special friend, Janell Kelly of Montgomery; several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at Gill Funeral Home, with Maury Brenneman officiating. Burial will be in Walnut Hill Cemetery, Petersburg.

Visitation is from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and after 9 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Preferred memorials are to Helping Heart Hospice, c/o Gill Funeral Home, 308 E. Walnut St., Washington, IN 47501.
