Sylvester L. Frankenberger

Jan. 26, 1929-March 27, 2001

ELKHART -- Sylvester L. Frankenberger, 72, of 321 E. Emerald St., died at Elkhart General Hospital at 3:30 a.m. Tuesday (March 27, 2001).

Mr. Frankenberger was born in Evansville on Jan. 26, 1929, to Charles E. and Hannah Frankenberger, served in the U.S. Air Force and married Della J. Nolen in Elkhart on Aug. 20, 1949. She died Sept. 16, 1993.

He is survived by a son, Leo G. (Rebecca) of Bristol; one daughter, Mrs. James (Vickie) Williams of Hemet, Calif.; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Nolan (Rosemary) Blair of Florida and Mrs. Ron (Marge) Weisman of Elkhart; his stepmother, Betty Frankenberger of Union; and a stepbrother, Howard Wolfinger of Union.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Elkhart Chapel of Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home, where the service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. The Rev. James F. Seculoff of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bristol will officiate and burial will be at Rice Cemetery.

A military graveside service will be led by Disabled American Veterans Chapter 19.

Mr. Frankenberger retired from Excel Corp., where he was a material handler for 35 years, and was a member of Moose Lodge 599.

Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association.

VERA M. SANDERSON

Sept. 7, 1917-March 26, 2001

ELKHART -- Vera M. Sanderson, 83, of 907 McPherson St., died at 8:10 a.m. Monday (March 26, 2001) at SunBridge Care & Rehabilitation Center.

Mrs. Sanderson, the daughter of Clarence and Emma (Teeter) Moore, was born in Mishawaka on Sept. 7, 1917. She married Harry J. Sanderson in Elkhart on Oct. 17, 1935, and he died Feb. 4, 1982.

Surviving are four sons, Richard and Don (Bev), both of Elkhart, Ralph (Velma) of LaGrange and Gerald (Shirley) of Bradenton, Fla.; one daughter, Mrs. Steve (Carol) Gordy of Elkhart; 21 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Emmaline of Kalamazoo, Mich. A son, William; and one daughter, Betty Flowers, are deceased.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Elkhart Chapel of Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home, where the service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday. The Rev. Brian Lutz with Osolo Missionary Church will officiate and burial will follow at Prairie Street Cemetery.

Mrs. Sanderson was a homemaker and a member of Osolo Missionary Church and the YWCA Senior Group. She enjoyed sewing and making arts and crafts.

Memorials may be given to any charity.

ALCIE (ROWENA) RANDALL

April 8, 1920 -- March 24, 2001

ELKHART -- Alcie (Rowena) Randall, 80, of 402 State St., died at 10 a.m. Saturday (March 24, 2001) at her home where she had lived since 1947. She was born April 8, 1920, in Grabill, Ind., to Franklin and Goldie (Stroh) Ward. She married James DeWitt Randall Sr. Feb. 17, 1940, in Elkhart. He died Oct. 1, 1991.

Survivors include one daughter, Janet Randall of Elkhart; two sons, James D. Randall Jr. of Bristol and John D. Randall of Elkhart; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Hazel Hess of Elkhart.

Three brothers and three sisters are deceased.

Friends may call 2 to 4 today and 6 to 8 tonight at the Elkhart Chapel of the Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home, where the service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday. The Rev. Tim Garner of First Brethren Church of Elkhart will officiate. Burial will be in Rice Cemetery.

Mrs. Randall worked as a waitress in the Coffee Corner in the old Hotel Elkhart, then worked the lunch counter at the Kresge store. She retired from the Sideboard Restaurant in Greencroft Center, all in downtown Elkhart.

She was a member of the First Brethren Church of Elkhart.

Memorials may be given to the charity of one's choice.

FRED C. ERB
Jan. 17, 1918-July 22, 2001

BRISTOL -- Fred C. Erb, 83, of 607 W. Vistula St., died at 9 p.m. Sunday (July 22, 2001) in his home.
He was born in Elkhart on Jan. 17, 1918, the son of Fred W. and Glida (Ackley) Erb, and raised by his grandparents, Mose and Lizzy Erb. He graduated from Bristol High School and took several courses in engineering at the Purdue University Extension campus.
On April 19, 1942, Mr. Erb married Kathleen L. Swartz in Elkhart and she died Oct. 10, 1988. He married Doris E. Bickel in Bristol on July 18, 1992, and she survives.
Also surviving are a son, Steven H. (Patricia) of Kokomo; one daughter, Mrs. Donald (Elaine) Pickrell of Elkhart; a stepson, Michael Masten of DeMott; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Michael (Delores) Byrne of White House Station, N.J., and Mrs. Bill (Gail) Yoder of Goshen; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; nine stepgreat-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. William (Carol) Clark of Elkhart.
His stepmother, Ana Erb, is deceased.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Bristol Chapel of Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home, with a Masonic service beginning at 8 p.m. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Bristol United Methodist Church and officiated by the Rev. Donald W. Brenneman. Burial will follow at Rice Cemetery.
Mr. Erb worked at C.G. Conn as an industrial engineer from 1960 to 1972 and then for Vincent Bach until 1981 when he retired as chief engineer. He was a member of Bristol United Methodist Church, Moose Lodge 599, George Washington Lodge 325 F&AM, the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, South Bend Valley Scottish Rite and the Christian Church in Mission, Texas.
He served for 30 years on the Bristol Fire Department and as a board member of the Bristol Library and McAllen Community Concert Club in McAllen, Texas. He was an avid music enthusiast and played drums for a number of dance bands.
Memorials may be given to Bristol Fire Department or Bristol United Methodist Church.

EVELYN L. MOYER
Feb. 4, 1906-July 24, 2001

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Evelyn L. Moyer, 95, of San Antonio, formerly of Wakarusa, died at 8:55 a.m. Tuesday (July 24, 2001) at North East Baptist Hospital.
The daughter of Daniel W. and Ann E. (Holdeman) Wenger, she was born in Elkhart County on Feb. 4, 1906, and married Carl E. Moyer in Elkhart on Dec. 24, 1932. He died Aug. 11, 1986.
Mrs. Moyer is survived by a son, Rex C. (Laura) of San Antonio, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Three brothers and five sisters are deceased.
Friends may call one hour before the service at 2 p.m. Saturday at Jamestown United Methodist Church in Elkhart. The Rev. Ron Bowman will officiate and burial will be at Olive Cemetery, Wakarusa.
The Elkhart Chapel of Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Moyer retired as a registered nurse from Elkhart General Hospital and was a member of Jamestown United Methodist Church and the Elkhart Nurses Alumni.
Memorials may be given to the Nature Conservancy or Leading the Way Ministries.

HAROLD SWARTZLANDER
Feb. 8, 1913--July 28, 2001

SOUTH BEND -- Harold C. Swartzlander, 88, of St. Paul Retirement Center, 3602 S. Ironwood Drive, died at 5 a.m. Saturday (July 28, 2001) at Elkhart General Hospital. He was born Feb. 8, 1913, in Milford to Walter and Arvilla (Jensen) Swartzlander.

He married Esther C. Chandler Sept. 8, 1935, in Elkhart. She died July 24, 1999. He then married Theora Anglemyer Sept. 9, 2000, in South Bend.

She survives along with one son, Mac Swartzlander of Elkhart; two daughters, Mrs. Bruce (Ella Louise) Kentner of Livingston, Texas, and Mrs. Daryl (Gail Ann) Fradenburg of Elkhart; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Elkhart Chapel of the Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home where the service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday. The Rev. James Campbell will officiate. Burial will be in Prairie Street Cemetery.

Mr. Swartzlander was a power plant engineer for Bendix Corp. He was a member of Kane Masonic Lodge in Elkhart and the Christian Church in Zephyrhills, Fla.
Memorials may be given to St. Joseph County Hospice.

EDNA M. SHEELEY
April 27, 1915-July 30, 2001

GOSHEN -- Friends of Edna Mae Sheeley may call two hours before the service at 2 p.m. Friday at the Elkhart Chapel of Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home. The Rev. David Rumpf with New Apostolic Church in Osceola will officiate and burial will be at Corinth Brethren Cemetery in Twelve Mile, Ind.

Mrs. Sheeley, 86, of 2400 College Ave., formerly of Elkhart, died at 3:35 p.m. Monday (July 30, 2001) at Carriage Manor Nursing Center.

On April 27, 1915, she was born to John and Lillie (Berkheiser) Britton in Mason County, Mich. She married Wheeler Bosh in Twelve Mile on June 27, 1937, and he died in May 1962. She married Kenneth H. Sheeley Sr. in Elkhart on Oct. 19, 1979, and he survives.

Also surviving are four stepsons, David of LaGrange, Kenneth H. Jr. of North Webster, Charles of Goshen and Rex of Syracuse; two grandchildren; 20 stepgrandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three brothers, Charles Britton of Missouri, John Britton of LaPorte and Daniel Britton of Peru; and three sisters, Rosalea Mick of Montpelier, Ohio, Sara Meritz of Galien, Mich., and Cora King of Rochester.

A son, Francis M. Bosh; two brothers, Park and Grover Britton; and two sisters, Orma Wilson and Mary Pressler, are deceased.

Mrs. Sheeley was a retired nurse's aide and a member of New Apostolic Church.
Memorials may be given to the church.

Ethel V. Smith
Oct. 3, 1909-Aug. 7, 2001

ELKHART -- Ethel V. Smith, 91, formerly of 313 Concord Ave., died at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday (Aug. 7, 2001) at Valley View Healthcare Center.

She was born in Chicago on Oct. 3, 1909, the daughter of George W. and Martha C. (Fiedler) Spoer. She married Lloyd M. Smith on July 24, 1932, in Fairmount. He died April 7, 1985.

Surviving are one son, George W. (Marilyn) Smith of Elkhart; one granddaughter, Mrs. Lionzo (Sara K.) Barraza of El Paso, Texas; and two great-granddaughters. A grandson, Michael D. Smith, preceded her in death on June 4, 1994; and a sister, Florence Rogers, preceded her in death on June 18, 2001.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Elkhart Chapel of Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home, where services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday. The Rev. Toni Carmer of Trinity United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be the Chapel of Peace at Rice Cemetery.

Mrs. Smith was a graduate of Senn High School and Pierson School of Commerce, both in Chicago. She worked as a secretary at Hawthorne and Ullery schools prior to the opening of a family business in 1964, Smith Products Co. Working with her husband, she was secretary and bookkeeper of Smith Products until the company's sale in 1978. She was a homemaker until becoming ill in February 2000. She was a 50-year member of Order of Eastern Star, Starlite Chapter No.181.

Memorials may be made to Shriners Children Hospital.

MAX J. BATES
Sept. 6, 1923-Aug. 8, 2001

ELKHART -- Max J. Bates, 77, of 24689 Idlewild Ave., died at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday (Aug. 8, 2001) at home.

He was born on Sept. 6, 1923, in Mishawaka, the son of LeRoy and Ina Leer Bates. He married Eloise E. Bates on Jan. 14, 1946, in Elkhart. She died Aug. 29, 2000.

Surviving are one son, Steven R. (Sandra) Bates of Elkhart; one daughter, Mrs. Chris (Susan) Marshall of Mishawaka; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Friends may call one hour prior to the 10 a.m. service Friday at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home in Elkhart. The Rev. Jack McGlasson of Beulah Missionary Church will officiate. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Bates was a bartender at Franklin Street Tavern and Sidetrack Tavern. He was a member of the American Legion Post 308 in Osceola and a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force, serving in World War II.

JIMMIE DALE HARRIS SR.
Feb. 15, 1951--July 21, 2001

GRANGER -- Jimmie Dale Harris Sr., 50, of 53630 Ash Road, died at 3:35 a.m. Saturday (July 21, 2001) at his residence after a three-year illness. He was born Feb. 17, 1951, in Big Rock, Ky., to Wilson and Frankie (Williams) Harris. He married Dawn Renee Brundage Feb. 20, 1971, in Peru.
She survives along with his mother, Frankie Harris in Wabash; one son, Jimmie D. (Christina) Harris Jr. of Wakarusa; one daughter, Mrs. Jonathon (Jodi Renee) Knapp of South Bend; five grandchildren; four brothers, Bobby Cornett, Willie Cornett and Carl Harris, all of Wabash, and Floyd Cornett of Peru; and five sisters, Bonnie Harris of Yeaddiss, Ky., Doris Miller and Gail Williams, both of Wabash, Norma Barnes of Mentone and Helen France of Smilax, N.Y.
Two brothers, Carlus Cornett and Wilson Harris Jr., a sister, Lucille Harden; and a granddaughter, Jonna Knapp, preceded him in death.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Elkhart Chapel of Stenn-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home where the service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday. George Faull of Summit Theological Seminary in Peru will officiate. Burial will be in Union Center Cemetery in Nappanee.
Mr. Harris had worked for Wabash Alloys in Wabash as a furnace operator for 29 years. He was a member of the First Church of Christ in Peru and was a member of the Boilermakers Union.

VERNON E. GOVE SR.
Nov. 23, 1924-July 20, 2001

ELKHART -- Vernon E. Gove Sr., 76, of 2100 E. Bristol St., died from an extended illness at 11:35 p.m. Friday (July 20, 2001) in Elkhart General Hospital.
He was born on Nov. 23, 1924, in Elkhart, the son of Vernon S. and Elma A. (Gould) Gove. He married Margaret R. Smeltzer on Nov. 23, 1986, in Elkhart.
His wife survives, along with two sons, John W. and Vernon E. Jr., both of Elkhart; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Tony (Mary) Lorenzo of Joliet, Ill., and Mrs. William (Cynthia) Frascella of Mishawaka; a stepson, Jeffery Smeltzer of Las Vegas; five grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and a sister, Gladys Long of Houston.
Three brothers, Hubert, Stanley and Franklyn, preceded Mr. Gove in death.
He graduated from Elkhart High School in 1943. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in Italy during World War II and received the bronze star and combat infantry badge.
He worked for 39 years as yardmaster for Conrail, and was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Disabled American Veterans Post 19, the National Association of 10th Mountain Division; and the International Federation of Mountain Soldiers.
Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Monday at the Elkhart chapel of Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home, where the funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday. The Rev. Julie Lehman-Guy of Grace Lutheran Church will preside. Military services at Rice Cemetery will be conducted by the DAV.
Memorials may be given to the Elkhart County Humane Society or Elkhart General Community Hospice.

Thurman O. Holmes Sr.
Nov. 3, 1925--July 15, 2001

ELKHART -- Thurman O. Holmes Sr., 76, of 59677 C.R. 113 S., died Sunday (July 15, 2001) at Elkhart General Hospital. He was born Nov. 3, 1925, in Falkville, Ala., to Richard and Annie Pearl (Price ) Holmes.

Survivors include three sons, Thurman O. Jr., of Riverview, Mich., Richard Edward of Lincoln Park, Mich., and Raymond Glen of Wayne, W. Va.; four daughters, Mrs. Howard (Nancy) Hampton of Albertville, Ala., Mrs. James (Linda) Sneed of Taylor, Mich., Mrs. Jerry (Julie Gayle) Brake of Woodhaven, Mich., and Mrs. Thurman (Debra) Bush of Newport News, Va.; 15 grandchildren; one stepgrandchild; 16 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Max of Elkhart.

A sister, Betty Mae Holmes, and a great-granddaughter preceded him in death.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home in Elkhart until the service there at 1 p.m. Thurman O. Holmes Jr. and Jerry Brake will officiate. Burial will be in Oakridge Cemetery in Bristol.

Mr. Holmes retired from Bock Industries as a truck driver after 22 years. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Harold J. Kline
Nov. 26, 1914--July 14, 2001

BRISTOL -- Harold J. Kline, 86, of 15650 S.R. 120, died at 3 p.m. Saturday (July 14, 2001) at Eastlake Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

He was born Nov. 26, 1914, in Fulton County to Daniel and Effie (Hagen) Kline. He married Elaine O. Casselman Aug. 10, 1941 in Elkhart.

She survives with one son, Steve (Heidi) Kline of Bristol; one daughter, Mrs. Don (Sharon) Barber of Bristol; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. David (Marietta) Rutter of Elkhart.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Bristol Chapel of the Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home. Cremation will follow. A graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Oakridge Cemetery in Bristol. The Rev. Paul Brenneman of Bristol United Methodist Church will officiate.

Mr. Kline was a 1933 graduate of Elkhart High School. He was retired produce manager for Wilts Grocery Store in Elkhart. After retirement, he worked for New Yorker Homes and Bowden Products.

He was a member of Bristol United Methodist Church and a past member of the George Washington Masonic Lodge in Bristol.

Memorials may be given to Bristol United Methodist Church.
