EILEEN L. WENZEL
May 21, 1924-Aug. 18, 2001

ELKHART -- Friends of Eileen L. Wenzel may call for two hours before the service at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Elkhart Chapel of Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home. The Rev. Thomas Ryan with St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church will officiate and burial will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Janesville, Wis.

Mrs. Wenzel, 77, of 303 Waterfall Drive, died at 2:50 a.m. Saturday (Aug. 18, 2001) at Elkhart General Hospital after an extended illness.

She was born in Elkhart on May 21, 1924, to Alpha V. and Linda W. (Dreogomiller) Haven and married James T. Wenzel on Feb. 18, 1950. He died Feb. 4, 1979.

She is survived by a son, Anthony M. (Debra) of Draper, Utah; and six sisters, Priscilla Watson, Shirley Murphy, Linda Taber, Doris Morse and Mary Lou "Mickey" Peffley, all of Elkhart, and Gloria Hein of Goshen. Four sisters, Norma Lambo, Jenny White, Wanda Geroux and Iris Haven, are deceased.

Mrs. Wenzel retired as a telephone operator from General Telephone Co. in Elkhart and was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Janesville.

SIDNEY A. PEDLER
Feb. 26, 1910-Aug. 29, 2001
BRISTOL -- Sidney A. “Sid” Pedler, 91, of 50653 Indiana Lake Road, died at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday (Aug. 29, 2001) at his home.
He was born in Elkhart on Feb. 26, 1910, the son of Harry Sr. and Louisa (Hughes) Pedler, and married Sylvia D. Books on Aug. 31, 1935, in Huntington. She died on Feb. 19, 1997.
Mr. Pedler is survived by two sons, Dennis W. (Chris) of Union and David L. (Jean) of Bristol; two daughters, Mrs. Dennis (Jan) Tepe of Elkhart and Mrs. Terry (Karen) Pedler-Buchanan of Elkhart; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Larry; four brothers, Harry, John, Tom and Donald; and two sisters, Katie Pedler and Margaret Nelson.
Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Elkhart Chapel of Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home, where the service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday. His great-nephew, the Rev. Dan Stanley with Manna Church in Raeford, N.C., will be officiating. Burial will take place at Rice Cemetery.
Mr. Pedler was a graduate of Elkhart High School and Indiana University, where he played in the IU band. He had worked for Harry Pedler and Co., and in 1945 founded Hoosier Band Instrument Co. of Elkhart, working there until his retirement. He enjoyed fishing, growing tulips and roses and restoring musical instruments that he used to manufacture.
Memorials may be given to Riley Hospital for Children, 702 Barnhill Drive, Room 1715, Indianapolis, IN 46202.

THOMAS P. SZOBODI
Sept. 30, 1928--Sept. 8, 2001

GOSHEN -- Thomas Paul Szobodi, 72, of 170 Brookside Manor, died at 12:15 p.m. Saturday (Sept. 8, 2001) at Elkhart General Hospital. He was born Sept. 30, 1928, in Elkhart to John Joseph and Elizabeth (Nagy) Szobodi.

Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Jo Szobodi of Goshen and Maria Danielle Szobodi of Elkhart; one grandson, Seth Michael Szobodi of Elkhart; one great-granddaughter, Cheyenne Autumn Szobodi of Elkhart; and one brother, Donald D. Szobodi of Warsaw.
He was preceded in death by five brothers, Henry, John, William, Charles and Ronald, and one sister, Elizabeth Simons.

The graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Prairie Street Cemetery. The Rev. Jack Overmyer of St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church will officiate. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home.

Military graveside services will be conducted by the U.S. Marine Corps.

Mr. Szobodi served in the Marines during World War II. He retired from Penn Control (now Johnson Controls). He attended St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church.

LUELLA E. HORN
April 13, 1913-Sept. 11, 2001

ELKHART -- Luella E. Horn, 88, of 28070 C.R. 24 W., died at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday (Sept. 11, 2001) at Hubbard Hill Estates.

She was born on April 13, 1913, in Granger to Henry and Elizabeth (Klopfenstein) Abel. She married Robert S. Horn on July 3, 1954, in Elkhart. He died on Feb. 25, 1972.

Surviving are one stepdaughter, Mrs. Joseph (Mary) Mathews of Mishawaka; a stepson, Thomas Horn of Pompano Beach, Fla.; and two stepgrandchildren. Five sisters and two brothers preceded her in death.

Friends will be received from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Elkhart Chapel of Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home and one hour prior to the funeral. The service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Robert G. Schallhorn Jr. and the Rev. Edmond Peters officiating. Burial will follow at Rice Cemetery.

Mrs. Horn retired as a supervisor from Miles Inc., where she worked for 40 years. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

MARGARET K. "BETTY" HOOVEN
July 17, 1927-Sept. 19, 2001

ELKHART -- Margaret K. “Betty” Hooven, 74, of 636 James St., died at 6:05 a.m. Wednesday (Sept. 19, 2001) at Elkhart General Hospital after a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Hooven was born on July 17, 1927, in Burtrand, Mich., to Edward F. and Clara (Heath) Edwards Sr. On Dec. 7, 1946, she married Francis W. “Red” Hooven. He died on Dec. 20, 1993.

Surviving are three sons, William L. (Sandy) Heath of Bristol, Ronald W. Hooven of Goshen and Richard A. Hooven of Elkhart; one daughter, Mrs. Charles (Frances E.) Baldwin of Elkhart; 14 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. One son, Randy J. Hooven, and one brother, Edward F. Edwards Jr., preceded her in death.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Elkhart chapel of Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday. The Rev. Don Mishler of Living Faith Fellowship will officiate, and burial will be in Rice Cemetery.

Mrs. Hooven was a homemaker, past president of the ladies auxiliary of Fraternal Order of Eagles, a member of VFW Auxiliary and a volunteer for Harvest Basket of UAW.

Richard K. Cripe
Feb. 23, 1922-Sept. 24, 2001

ELKHART -- Richard K. Cripe, 79, of 2601 Chippewa Drive, died at 4:15 a.m. Monday (Sept. 24, 2001) at Elkhart General Hospital.

Mr. Cripe was born on Feb. 23, 1922, in Elkhart to Roy and Iris (Ganger) Cripe. He married Roberta B. Becht on Sept. 4, 1943, in San Antonio, Texas. She died on April 6, 1995.

Survivors include a son, Stephen R. (Sue) of Timber Lake, N.C.; two daughters, Mrs. A.J. (Nancy) Rodino of Elkhart and Mrs. Jack (Sue) Myers of Bristol; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Louis (Jeanne) Brandon of Elkhart and Mrs. Dean (Marcia) Whitehead of Carmel.

There will be no visitation. The body will be cremated, and a private family graveside service will be held at a later date, with burial at Prairie Street Cemetery. Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Cripe was an Elkhart High School graduate and attended Manchester College. He served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific and on the Elkhart police department; was vice president of transportation at Windsor Mobile Homes in Bristol; and also worked for Rodino Parkmor Liquor Store Inc. in Elkhart before his retirement.

He was a member of the Elkhart Evening Optimist Club, Kane Lodge 183 F&AM Elkhart, Elkhart Shrine Club, Moose Lodge 599, Fraternal Order of Police Elkhart, Mizpah Temple of Fort Wayne and Elkhart Church of the Brethren.

Memorials may be given to the Elkhart Evening Optimist Club Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 901, Elkhart, IN 46515.

Gary K. Plank
June 20, 1947-Sept. 27, 2001

BRISTOL -- Gary K. Plank, 54, of 55191 C.R. 27, died at 7:09 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 27, 2001) in the emergency room at Goshen General Hospital following a garden tractor accident. He was born June 20, 1947, in Elkhart to Kenneth D. and V. Bernice (Sanford) Plank. He married Sheri L. Harper Dec. 21, 1996, in Bristol.

She survives with two daughters, Jessica and Jackie Plank, both of Goshen; one stepson, Ronnie A. Harper of Jimtown; his parents of Okeechobee, Fla.; and his brother, Jerry D. Plank of Strasburg, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Sanford, who died May 8, 2001.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Bristol Chapel of the Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home, where the service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday. Tom Harding, chaplain of VFW Post 1342 in Syracuse, will officiate. Military rites also will be held at the funeral home and led by VFW Post 1342.

Mr. Plank was a brick layer for Ziolkowski Construction Co. in South Bend. He was a member of VFW Post 1342 in Syracuse and American Legion Post 210 in Middlebury.

Mr. Plank was a graduate of South Broward High School in Hollywood, Fla., and attended South Broward Community College for three years before being drafted into the Army. He served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam.

Memorials may be given to VFW Post 1342 in Syracuse.

Goldie S. Lancaster
March 15, 1921-Oct. 3, 2001

ELKHART -- Goldie Susie Lancaster, 80, of 57522 Gano, died at 8:55 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 3, 2001) at Sunbridge Care & Rehabilitation.

She was born on March 15, 1921, in Manchester, Tenn., to James F. and Jessie M. (Jones) Lemons. She married James D. Lancaster on Nov. 6, 1964, in Cassopolis. He died on Nov. 26, 1972. Surviving are two stepsons, James (Eileen) and John (Peggy), both of Elkhart; eight stepgrandchildren; 16 stepgreat-grandchildren; and four sisters, Mrs. Willis (Mary) Spry and Jessie Swan, both of Elkhart, Elsie Allen of South Bend and Alice Shannon of Manchester, Tenn. Four brothers, Willie Lemons, Dewey Lemons, Freddie Lemons and Gradie Lemons, and a half-brother, Ted Ogle, preceded her in death.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Elkhart chapel of Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home, where the funeral service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday. Shirley Fox will officiate. Burial will be in Prairie Street Cemetery.

Mrs. Lancaster was a homemaker.

Memorials may be given to United Cancer Services of Elkhart County or the American Heart Association.

Arthur R. Payne
July 28, 1938-Oct. 8, 2001

ELKHART -- Arthur R. Payne, 63, of 1811 Leininger Ave., died at 10 p.m. Monday (Oct. 8, 2001) at his home.

Mr. Payne was born July 28, 1938, in Nelson, Ky., to William and Vesta (Hartline) Payne. He married Anna Lou Durie, who died in February 1967. He then married Lillian "Norie" Waite on June 23, 1990, in Elkhart. She died May 16, 1997.

Surviving are one son, Arthur R. II of Elkhart; two daughters, Robin Payne of Alton, Ill., and Mrs. Cliff (Sheila) Cato of St. Louis, Mo.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, the Rev. Melvin (Ruth) Payne of Dixon, Ky.; and two sisters, Mrs. Sam (Martha) Damron of Pompano Beach, Fla., and Mrs. Jacqueline Adkins of Cedar Grove, W.Va. One sister, Wanda Everetts, and one brother, James, preceded him in death.

Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at Elkhart Chapel at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home, with services following. The Rev. Melvin Payne will officiate, and burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Osceola.

Mr. Payne worked for Simmons and Son Heating and Cooling Co. in Elkhart as a service technician and served in the U.S. Marine Corps. from 1956-59.

Memorials may be given to the American Lung Association.

Hershel V. Gall
Jan. 11, 1912-Oct. 9, 2001

WAKARUSA -- Hershel V. Gall, 89, of 300 W. Washington, formerly of Elkhart, died at 9:10 p.m. Tuesday (Oct. 9, 2001) at Miller's Merry Manor in Wakarusa.

Born on Jan. 11, 1912, in Etna Green to David and Maggie (Clark) Gall, Mr. Gall married Martha E. Souers on Feb. 28, 1942, in Elkhart. She died Sept. 7, 2000.

Survivors include four sons, Jim (Jayne) of Mishawaka, Ron (Marcia) of Goshen, and Steve and David (Sabrina), both of Elkhart; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Chester (Cathryn) Patterson of Elkhart. Three brothers, Herman, Virgil and Russell, and three sisters, Opal Cook, Isadora Johnson and Edith Coulter, preceded him in death.

Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elkhart Chapel of Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home and one hour prior to services at 1:30 p.m. Friday. The Rev. Larry Bratton will officiate, and burial will be in Prairie Street Cemetery.

Mr. Gall retired in 1978 as a shipping foreman for Elkhart Brass Co., where he worked for 40 years. He was a member of Riverside Bible Church, where he served as a deacon for many years.

Memorials may be given to Elkhart General Community Hospice.

Claudine P. Beach
June 2, 1905-Oct. 10, 2001

ELKHART -- Claudine P. Beach, 96, 333 Mishawaka Road, formerly of 510 W. Blaine Ave., died at 3 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 10, 2001) at Valley View Health Care Center.

Born on June 2, 1905, in Elkhart to Lester and Amanda M. (Detwiler) Lantz, she married Edward M. Beach on Nov. 6, 1923, in Cassopolis. He died July 8, 1986.

Survivors include one brother, Millard S. of White Pigeon and several nieces and nephews. Two brothers, Richard and Marion, preceded her in death.

Visitation is from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the Elkhart Chapel of Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home, with a Women of the Moose memorial service following. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Andrew Kreider of Prairie Street Mennonite Church officiating. Burial will be in Prairie Street Cemetery.

Mrs. Beach retired in 1969 as a personnel floor supervisor for S.S. Kresge Co. after 42 years of service. She later worked part-time for Sorg Jewelers for 10 years. She was a member of Women of the Moose Elkhart Lodge 73 and former member of DAV 19 Auxiliary, Business and Professional Women's Club, Harvest Basket and the Friendly Pioneers.

Memorials may be given to Mooseheart and Moosehaven or Elkhart Community Hospice.

John L. Heerschop
July 24, 1923 - Oct. 19, 2001

ELKHART -- John L. Heerschop, 78, of 333 W. Mishawaka Rd., and formerly of 23832 Mira Ct., Elkhart, died at 12 p.m. Friday (Oct. 19, 2001) at Valley View Health Care Center.

Mr. Heerschop was born July 24, 1923, in Goshen to Mr. and Mrs. John (Bertha) Heerschop. He married Virginia R. Myers Lowell on June 27, 1959, in Elkhart. She survives.

Other survivors include two sons, Thomas J. (Connie) Heerschop of Elkhart and Fred Heerschop of Goshen; five daughters, Mrs. John (Maxine) Emmert of Ligonier, Mrs. Clark (Peggy) Hechaman of Nappanee, Mrs. Steve (Claudia) Heckman of Elkhart, Mrs. Vern (Chris) Stack of Elkhart and Mrs. Greg (Kathy) Baines of Goshen; 15 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Lee A. Heerschop; one brother, Lucas Heerschop; and one sister, Mary Farr preceded.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Elkhart Chapel Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home. Friends may call one hour before the service, which will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sugar Grove Church. The Rev. Edward Arnold, associate pastor at Sugar Grove Church, will officiate. Burial will be at the Prairie Street Cemetery. A special military service will be held by DAV No. 19 Elkhart at the cemetery.

Mr. Heerschop was a retired machine operator and set-up man at NIBCO, and also worked as a cabinet maker for Schultz Mobile Homes. He was a member of Sugar Grove Church and past commander of DAV No. 15 Goshen. He served in the Army during World War II in the Pacific where he earned the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

Memorials may be given to the Elkhart General Community Hospice.

Berdine R. Weaver
Sept. 4, 1918 - Oct. 26, 2001

UNION Mich. -- Berdine R. Weaver, 83, of 69764 Hilltop Road, Union, Mich., died at 9:32 p.m. Friday (Oct. 26, 2001) at Elkhart General Hospital after an apparent heart attack.

She was born on Sept. 4, 1918 in Foraker to Daniel and Minnie (Anthony) Getz. She married Harold Ray Weaver on Sept. 8, 1936. He survives.

Other survivors include three sons, Lowell (Donna) Weaver of Ft. Myers, Fla., James M. (Connie) Weaver of Bristol, Robert (Geraldine) Weaver of Ft. Myers, Fla.; one daughter, Mrs. Don (Carol) Carter of Swartz Creek, Mich.; twelve grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by twin sons, Ronald and Donald Weaver, and three brothers, Roscoe, Devon, and Kenneth Getz.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Bristol Chapel of Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home. Friends may also call one hour before the service Tuesday at the church.

The service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bristol Missionary Church. The Rev. Dan Griffin and Rev. Dale Turner will officiate. Cremation with burial will be at Yellow Creek Cemetery.

Mrs. Weaver was a homemaker and also did domestic cleaning for several families in Elkhart. She was a member at Bristol Missionary Church and enjoyed needlework and gardening.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
