NEWTOWN, Conn. -- Madge (Whetstone) Hoffman, 96, died Oct. 13, 2000, in Newtown.
She was a former Anderson resident. The Whetstone United Church of Christ was named for her family.
She is survived by a niece, Sylvia Blackman; a great-nephew, Greg Helms; and a great-niece, Cathryn Brennan.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Whetstone United Church of Christ, 5940 Madison Ave., Anderson.
Edith F. Dickerson
ALEXANDRIA -- Edith Frances Dickerson, 95, formerly of Elwood, died Oct. 17, 2000, at Community Hospital in Anderson after a brief illness.
She was born Aug. 20, 1905, in Alexandria, and lived in Madison County most of her life. In addition to being a homemaker, she owned grocery stores in Summitville, Alexandria and Elwood. She also formerly managed a hotel in Warsaw for a period of time.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Elwood and a former member of the Order of Eastern Star.
Survivors include a son, Keith Dickerson of Harrison, Ohio; five grandchildren, David Dickerson, Dale Dickerson, Brian Dickerson, Lisa Abernathy and Bruce Abernathy; 10 great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Ada (Starr) Bell; husband, whom she married Nov. 4, 1925, Virgil Dickerson, April 30, 1998; daughter, Eleanor Abernathy; son, Max E. Dickerson; and three sisters, Sharon Bell, Helen Ellingwood and Hazel Hannon.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Copher & Fesler Funeral Home, Elwood, with the Rev. Ed Wilkinson of Southern Heights Christian Church in Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Vinson Cemetery, Summitville.
Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association through the funeral home.
Edwin W. Vardaman
Edwin W. Vardaman, 82, Anderson, died Oct. 18, 2000,.
He retired from the Anderson Fire Department after 22 1/2 years of employment.
Survivors include a brother, Donald Minsch; son, George (wife Maggie) Chapman; one grand; two great-grandchildren; a niece; and special friend, Dee Sample.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Blanche (Thompson) Vardaman, in 1964; and his second wife, Lova (Bell) Vardaman, in 1993.
Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Grant Memorial Park Cemetery, Marion. There will be no visitation.
Memorial contributions may be made to Fraternal Order of Fire Fighters or a charity of the donor's choice.
Arrangements are being handled by Robert E. Loose Funeral Homes & Crematory.
Reba L. Swinford
Reba L. Swinford, 83, formerly of Chicago, Ill., died Oct. 18, 2000, at Rolling Hills Rehabilitation Center after an extended illness.
She was personnel director for Stouffers in Chicago for 40 years, retiring in 1985.
Survivors include two sisters, Faye McKay and Pauline Gwin; four brothers, Dallas Swinford, Harry Swinford, James Swinford and Ora "Gene" Swinford; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 3 p.m. Friday at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service with Pastor Carol Taylor officiating. Burial will be in East Maplewood Cemetery.
Visitation will be one hour before services Friday at the funeral home.
Lowell W. Rhodes
SHIRLEY -- Lowell W. "Doby" Rhodes, 79, Shirley, died Oct. 18, 2000, in Greenfield after an extended illness.
He was employed as a laborer with the railroad in the Shirley area.
Survivors include a sister, Vera Marie Denney; a half sister; three nephews, David Denney, Bill Denney and Ronald Denney; and several great-nieces and nephews, great-great-nieces and nephews, and cousins.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home Estell Chapel with the Revs. William Beauchat and Charles Riggs officiating. Burial will be in McCray Cemetery.
Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. Friday and before services Saturday at the funeral home.
Orval T. Swartz
Orval T. Swartz, 96, Anderson, died Oct. 16, 2000, at Miller's Merry Manor in Middletown after a brief illness.
He was born Dec. 13, 1903, in Madison County and was a lifelong resident of Anderson. He retired from Delco Remy Division of General Motors after more than 30 years of employment.
He was a member of Whetstone United Church of Christ in Anderson, Killbuck Retirees Club, the former Kazoo Band and United Auto Workers Local 662.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews including Herbert Lee (wife, Sue) Stottlemyer of Anderson, Rosemary (husband, George) Underwood of Lafayette, Caroll (wife, Jeannie) Stottlemyer of Goshen, Charlie (wife, Shirley) Hamilton of Anderson, Donald (wife, Frances) Swartz of Greenfield and Dianne (husband, Richard) Augustinovicz of Anderson; and several great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of more than 70 years, Elizabeth Seybert Swartz, whom he married Oct. 30, 1928, in Anderson; parents, Albert and Viola (Rector) Swartz; two brothers, Carl Swartz and Oran Swartz; and two sisters, Ada Ring and Helen Russell.
Services will be 2:30 p.m. Friday at Robert D. Loose Funeral Homes & Crematory, South Chapel, with the Rev. Stephen Gettinger officiating. Burial will be in Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today and one hour before services Friday at the South Chapel.
Bertha Mae Riley
CARMEL -- Bertha Mae (Esarey) Riley, 93, Carmel, died Oct. 16, 2000, at Lakeview Healthcare Center after an extended illness.
She was born Oct. 1, 1907, in Alexandria, the daughter of Albert and Golda Viola (Maynard) Esarey, and resided in Alexandria during her early years and from 1968-1977, then moving to Indianapolis. She was an accomplished seamstress and had handcrafted all types of apparel from wedding dresses to tailored suits. She spent her lifetime caring for children, the elderly and those who were ill. She was also very creative in making crafts. She enjoyed cooking, especially for large family dinners and will always be remembered for the wonderful candy, especially fudge, that she made for family and friends alike.
She enjoyed fishing and was a faithful worker at the polls for election day. In her later years, she came to embrace her Indian heritage of being a descendant of the Miami and Cherokee tribes.
While living in Alexandria, she was a member of Calvary Community Church. She was currently a member of the Fellowship in Christ in Carmel. It can be said that Bertha truly practiced the Golden Rule by "loving her neighbor as herself."
Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Brown of Washington, D.C.; granddaughter, Christine Howard of Tulsa, Okla.; two grandsons, Dennis Brown of Indianapolis and Eric Brown of Los Angeles, Calif.; eight great-grandchildren, Nicole Howard, Katherine Brown, Ixchel Brown, Sequoyah Brown, Kenya Brown, Reno Brown, Erin Brown and Kosey Brown; nephew, Robert Whipple; nieces, Jean Humphries, Carolyn McConnell, Judy Street, Josephine Hall and Ruth Ann Miller; and several cousins and numerous relatives in the area.
Also surviving are her extended family of brothers and sisters in Christ.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James Riley in 1967; and a sister, Helen Whipple in 1975.
A Celebration of Life and Homegoing Service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Owens Funeral Home, Alexandria, with Pastor Ferris Miller of Fellowship in Christ of Carmel officiating. Burial will be in Park View Cemetery, Alexandria.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Arrah L. Dyar
ALBANY, Ga. -- Former Knightstown resident Arrah Lee (Miller) Dyar, 75, Albany, died Oct. 15, 2000, in Georgia.
She was an apartment complex manager.
Survivors include two daughters, Brenda McClarnon and Sue (husband, Asa) Edwards; a brother, Robert Miller; and two sisters, Virginia McShurley and Ina Jean Plank.
Services will be 11 a.m. today at Todd Funeral Home, Butcher Chapel, Knightstown, with Linda Pope officiating. Burial will be in Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown.
Visitation will be 9 to 11 a.m. today at the funeral home.
Orval T. Swartz

John W. Hinners
John W. "Jack" Hinners, 75, Anderson, died Oct. 15, 2000, at St. John's Medical Center after an extended illness.
He was born June 6, 1925, in Connersville and moved to Anderson in 1951 from Connersville. He was a utilityman for Delco Remy for 36 years, retiring in February 1987.
He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a member of Pendleton American Legion Post 117.
Survivors include his wife of almost 56 years, Margie (Kirchenbauer) Hinners of Anderson, whom he married Oct. 18, 1944, in Connersville; two sons, Johnny (wife, Tina) Hinners of Anderson and David W. (wife, Nancy) Hinners of Wichita, Kan.; half sister, Susie Jenkins of Connersville; three sisters-in-law, Phyllis Hinners of Connersville, Patty (husband, Larry) O'Brien of Anderson and Frances Wilhoite of Rialto, Calif.; four grandchildren, April Hinners, Scott (wife, Brenda) Hinners, Jesse Hinners and Jacob Hinners; two great-grandchildren, Kayla Hinners and Dillon Barrett; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Mary (Lewis) Hinners; two brothers; a sister; and a great-grandson, Larry Michael Hinners.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service with the Rev. Claude Creel officiating. Burial will be in East Maplewood Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Ruth G. Eldridge
WINNSBORO, S.C. -- Ruth (Gardner) Eldridge, 73, Winnsboro, died Oct. 13, 2000, at Providence Hospital, Columbia, S.C.
She was born Dec. 1, 1926, in Great Falls, S.C., the daughter of the late Gettys and Susie (Bagley) Gardner. She was a homemaker and a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She was a member of Lake Wateree Baptist Church and attended Great Falls Schools.
Survivors include her husband, John J. Eldridge; son, Elmer (wife, Penny) Eldridge of Anderson; a daughter, B. Starr Eldridge of Eugene, Ore.; three sisters, Mrs. Carl (Velma) Threatt of Columbia, S.C., Mrs. Bob (Josephine) Broughton of Lancaster, S.C., and Mrs. John (Peggy) Hinson of Palm Springs, Fla.; a grandson, Ross (wife, Georgieann) Eldridge of Fort Collins, Colo.; a granddaughter, Dana (husband, Gary) Wright of Anderson; and a great-grandson, Tyler Eldridge of Fort Collins, Colo.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Juanita Black.
Services were conducted Monday at Wateree Baptist Church with the Revs. Ron Gregory and Buford Hayes officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Edmund J. Luksus
Edmund J. Luksus, 84, Anderson, died Oct. 16, 2000, at ManorCare Health Services after an extended illness.
He retired as a self-employed mason contractor.
Survivors include his wife, Helen (Gacon) Luksus; two daughters, Cynthia Luksus and Bill Deters, and Deborah Brunty; three sons, Edmund (wife, Elaine) Luksus, Darryl (wife, Lisa) Luksus and Kevin (wife, Alicia) Luksus; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Charlotte Pictor.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Geisen Funeral Home, Merrillville. Burial will be in Calumet Park Cemetery in Merrillville.
Visitation will be two hours before services Saturday at the funeral home.

TERRE HAUTE -- Former Anderson resident William Harold "Bill" Dillard, 84, Terre Haute, died Oct. 16, 2000, at Meadows Manor East.
He was born Nov. 7, 1915, in Ridgeway, Ill., the son of David and Elizabeth (Rogers) Dillard. He was a quality control supervisor at Delco Remy Division of General Motors. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife, Betty (Guy) Dillard; a daughter, Beth Ann Coe of Terre Haute; son, Guy (wife, Anne) Dillard of West Terre Haute; sister, Marie Huff of Anderson; three grandchildren, Ryan Dillard of Indianapolis, and Elizabeth Dillard and Patrick Dillard, both of West Terre Haute; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers; and two sisters.
Prayer will be said Thursday at 9:30 a.m. at Callahan Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Joseph West officiating. Entombment will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that if friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of their choice.
V. Louise Williams
V. Louise (Trueblood) Williams, 70, Anderson, died Oct. 17, 2000, at her residence after an extended illness.
She was born Dec. 22, 1929, in Anderson and was a lifelong resident of Anderson. She retired from Guide Lamp in 1982 after 30 years of employment.
She was always willing to help others whether it was to work or just be there. She was an avid bowler, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 266 Auxiliary and a member of the United Auto Workers Local 663.
Survivors include three daughters, Thelma (husband, Bob) Owens and Cherrie (husband, Ed) Rowan, all of Anderson, and Kim (husband, Jim) Washburn of Indianapolis; stepson, Jerry (wife, Barb) Williams of New Port Richey, Fla.; four sisters, Janice (husband, Jerry) Trietsch, Norma (husband, Buck) Wigner, Bertha Millspaugh and Pearl (husband, Duke) Kimmerling, all of Anderson; two brothers, Harold (wife, Zelma) Trueblood and Ernie (wife, Bernice) Trueblood, all of Anderson; four sisters-in-law, Laura Davis, Jean Atkinson and Betty Mills, all of Anderson, and Irene Haynes of Wabash; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Also surviving are many special friends whom the family has been very thankful for.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Williams in 1991; parents, Benjamin and Lestie (Smith) Trueblood; two brothers, Jesse Trueblood and Charles Trueblood; and two grandsons, Danny Williams and Nathaniel Pratt.
Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Robert D. Loose Funeral Homes & Crematory, South Chapel, with the Rev. Claude Creel of Huntsville Evangelistic Community Church officiating. Burial will be in Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the South Chapel.

ELWOOD -- Charline Bailey, 72, died Oct. 14, 2000, at St. Vincent Mercy Hospital in Elwood.
