ELWOOD -- Edith M. Roberson, 93, died Aug. 4, 2002, at St. Vincent Mercy Hospital, Elwood. Arrangements are pending at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home, Elwood.

Lowell W. Sumner

Lowell W. Sumner, 82, of Anderson, died Aug. 4, 2002, at Community Hospital Anderson after a brief illness.

He was born April 3, 1920, in Illinois and had been an Anderson resident since his childhood.

In 1982, he retired from Delco Remy, Anderson, after 42 years of employment.

One of the founders of the Men's Garden Club, he was a master gardener, certified by Purdue University. He also taught gardening. In 1993, he was given the Sertoma Club's Service to Mankind Award.

Survivors include three children, Lori Sumner of Anderson, Gary (wife, Louise) Sumner of Muncie and Dan (wife, Marsha) Sumner of Wheaton, Ill.; seven grandchildren, Scott Sumner, Sheri Mundy, Jeff Sumner, Mike (wife, Nicole) Sumner, Nathan Sumner, Jon Sumner and Becky Sumner; and a great-granddaughter, Courtney Valmore.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Opal L. Sumner.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service, 229 S. Rangeline Road, Anderson, officiated by Pastor Bob Brown. Burial will be in East Maplewood Cemetery.

Calling hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Gardeners of Anderson through the funeral home.

Mary J. Boram

Mary Jeanette (Nichols) Boram, 82, of Anderson, died Oct. 5, 2002, at St. John's Medical Center in Anderson after a brief illness.

She was born Feb. 9, 1920, in Anderson, were she lived her entire life.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include a daughter, Diana (husband, Phillip) Guill of Mechanicsburg; her sister, Lillian Lundy of Beach Park, Ill.; two granddaughters, Cindy Guill and Michelle Borden, both of Anderson; five great-grandchildren, Chandler Guill, Travis Borden, Amber Borden, Cayden Wheat and Lacey Borden, all of Anderson; four stepgrandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Boram in 1982; a grandson, Chris Guill in 1996; and two brothers, Keith "Bud" Nichols and Paul Nichols.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Robert D. Loose Funeral Homes and Crematory, South Chapel, 200 W. 53rd St., Anderson, officiated by the Rev. Brad Smith. Burial will take place in Miller Cemetery, Middletown.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the south chapel.

ELWOOD -- Opal P. Alexander, 83, died Oct. 6, 2002, at St. Vincent Mercy Hospital, Elwood.

Roberta J. DeMoss

Roberta Jean (Shelley) DeMoss, 74, of Anderson, died Oct. 5, 2002, at Manor Care Health Services, following an extended illness.

Dr. Eugene Roach

Dr. Eugene Roach, 70, of Anderson, died Oct. 6, 2002, at Providence Hospital in Mobile, Ala.

Alden Macel Renner

NOBLESVILLE -- Alden Macel Renner, 87, passed away Oct. 6, 2002, at Riverview Hospital in Noblesville after a brief illness.

He was born Sept. 24, 1915, in Hamilton County, the son of Earl and Goldie (Reddick) Renner.

He was a graduate of Lapel High School, Class of 1934.

In 1972, he retired from Guide Lamp in Anderson after 37 years of employment and, in 1976, retired from farming.

He attended Clarksville Christian Church; was a charter member of UAW Local 663 and was a member of the Hamilton County Democrat Club.

Survivors include three sons, Stanton (wife, Marsha) Renner, John (wife, Linda) Renner and Tim (wife, Dee) Renner, all of Noblesville; two brothers, Jacob (wife, Carolyn) Renner of Fishersburg and Rex (wife, Nedlene) Renner of Noblesville; four grandchildren, Christian (wife, Anna) Renner, Kathleen (husband, Michael) Olse, Michael Renner and Emily Renner; two great-grandchildren, Emma Renner and Jacob Renner; and several special nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine (Kaiser) Renner in 2001; his parents; and a sister, Lavon Elkins.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Scott E. Hersberger Funeral Home, 1010 N. Main St., Lapel, officiated by the Rev. John Pflum and Pastor Douglas Gast.

Burial will take place at the Zimmer Cemetery in Noblesville.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson Foundation or to the charity of the donor's choice.

ELWOOD -- Rena Blanch Heaton, 91, died Oct. 6, 2002, at St. Vincent Mercy Hospital in Elwood.

Virgil D. Haynes

MIDDLETOWN -- Virgil David Haynes, 78, died Oct. 5, 2002, at his residence following a lengthy illness.

He was born Dec. 1, 1923, in Middletown, where he lived his entire life.

He was a 1941 graduate of Middletown High School.

During World War II, he served his country as a technician 5th grade at Headquarters Co. in the 127th Airborne Battalion of the U.S. Army. He was a paratrooper with the 11th Airborne Division, serving in Japan from February 1943, through January 1946.

In 1985, he retired from Baystone Construction in Muncie. Prior to that, he had been an employee of Delco Remy in Anderson and Honeycutt and Sons in New Castle.

Survivors include his two daughters, Tamara Kay (husband, Ken) Walters of Middletown and Sandara Jo Haynes (Joe Cahuc and daughter Alisha), all of Muncie; three grandchildren, Shawn Rene (husband, Steve) Price of Monticello, Tory Ann (husband, Jarred) Meinders of Milan and Nikki Haynes (Aaron Harris) of Anderson; three great-grandchildren, Austin Masters and Shayla Meinders, both of Milan, and David Gavin Haynes of Anderson; two stepgrandsons, Aaron Walters and Matthew Walters, both of Middletown; four sisters, Lucille Gavin, Betty Troy and Janet (husband, Charles) Harter, all of Middletown, and Judy Cunningham of Anderson; four brothers, Jim (wife, Connie) Haynes and Norm Haynes, all of Middletown, Ralph (wife, Lila) Haynes of Marion and Don (wife, Connie) Haynes of Florida; two sisters-in-law, Betty Parrish of Middletown and Joyce (husband, Francis) Hodson of Chesterfield; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Leila Jo (Reedy) Haynes on Sept. 22, 2001; and two brothers, Fred Haynes and Terry Haynes.

Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Ballard and Sons Funeral Home, 118 S. Fifth St., Middletown, officiated by Dr. Philip C. Rogers. A dove release memorial service will follow at Miller Cemetery in Middletown.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ball Memorial Hospital Hospice Program through the funeral home.

Catherine M. Closser

Catherine M. (Humphrey) Closser, 83, of Anderson, died Oct. 5, 2002, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis after a brief illness.

She was born May 1, 1919, in Hamilton County and lived in the Anderson area most of her life.

She was a homemaker who loved to cook and entertain family and friends. She also loved gardening.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Carolyn Closser of Anderson; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Rick Valentine of Anderson; her brother and sister-in-law, George and Anne Humphrey of Anderson; her sister, May Spall of Anderson; seven grandchildren, Blaine Swinford and Heather (husband, Brian) Schmitt, all of Anderson, Jennifer Jarrett, Stephanie (husband, Chad) Crawley, Kimberly (husband, Mark) Jones, all of Lapel, Todd (wife, Dawn) Norris of Poland and Tami Morgan of Muncie; seven great-grandchildren, Lainey Swinford, Kasey Swinford, Jamie Jarrett, Dalton Jarrett, Brock Morgan, Shelby Schmitt and Sydney Schmitt; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold "Ted" Closser on March 6, 1980; and her parents, Charles W. and Velissa (Castor) Humphrey.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Robert D. Loose Funeral Homes and Crematory, South Chapel, 200 W. 53rd St., Anderson, officiated by the Rev. Richard Cole. Burial will take place at Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery.

Calling hours are 4 to 8 p.m. today at the south chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society through the funeral home.

Janice Johnson

TAZWELL -- Janice "Jan" Johnson, 61, an Elwood native, passed away Oct. 5, 2002, at St. John's Medical Center in Anderson following an extended illness.

She was born March 18, 1941, in Elwood, the daughter of Vern and Lydia (Smith) Cox.

On Dec. 6, 1986, she married Robert Johnson.

She was a homemaker who loved her family and their home near Patoka Lake in southern Indiana.

She was a retired employee of State Plating in Elwood and a member of the Third Street Church of God, Elwood.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Johnson of Tazwell; four daughters, Laverna "Dolly" (husband, Chuck) Plughe of Elwood and Katherine (husband, Daniel) Colton, Penny Hobbs and Antionette "Annie" (husband, Chris) Weir, all of Anderson; a son, Ferrell (wife, Angela) Adams of Knightstown; two stepdaughters, Julia Ann Hawhee and Lyn Barker, both of Anderson; two brothers, Jack (wife, Helen) Cox and Jerry (wife, Lexy) Cox, all of Elwood; two sisters, Lillian (husband, Joe) Mroz of Frankton and Kay (husband, Butch) Robison of Elwood; 17 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Angela Adams; and a brother, Clarence Cox.

Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Dunnichay Funeral Home, 1113 S. Anderson St., Elwood, officiated by the Rev. Wally Champion of Third Street Church of God.

Burial will take place in Elwood Cemetery.

Visitation hours will be 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Brian L. Bricker

MIDDLETOWN -- Brian Lee Bricker, 27, died unexpectedly Feb. 6, 2003, at Ball Memorial Hospital, Muncie.

He was born Feb. 26, 1975, in Muncie, the son of Larry and Vicki (Foust) Bricker. He had resided in Redkey and in Anderson prior to moving to Middletown.

In 1994, he graduated from Jay County High School.

He had been employed in shipping and receiving at Keihin Air-Con in Muncie.

He attended the Westside Church of Christ in Yorktown and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Dunkirk.

Survivors include his wife, Holly (Orr) Bricker of Middletown; three children, Devon Bricker, Dylon Bricker and Kristina Bricker, all at home in Middletown; his sister, Amy Bricker of Middletown; grandmothers, Betty Bricker and Ora C. Smith; aunts and uncles, Jerry Bricker, Becky (husband, Danny) Little, Tommy (wife, Alice) Parham, Janis and Don Atins, Wanda Reagan, Sharon and Jim Hussleman, Brenda and John Bush, Ralph Hannon, Cathy Raiorden, Chester Foust, Connie and Fred Orr and Jim and Pam Orr; sisters-in-law, Mandi (husband, Jeff) Pugsley and Jenny Arnold; brother-in-law, Rex Shannon; his in-laws, John and Jackie Orr and Sam and Belinda Arnold; and two nieces, Hailey Pugsley and Hanna Pugsley. Also surviving are many friends and co-workers.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his grandfather, Aurther Bricker; a brother, Eric Bricker; grandmother, Marurette Foust; an aunt, Ann Orr and a brother-in-law, D. J. Shannon.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Ballard and Sons Funeral Home, 118 S. Fifth St., Middletown. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory Cemetery, Muncie.

Visitation hours are from 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and will include a 7 p.m. Rosary reading.

Samuel L. Goolsby

ST. JOSEPH, TENN. -- Samuel "Sam" Louis Goolsby, 77, former Anderson resident, died Feb. 8, 2003, at Crockett Hospital in Lawrenceburg, Tenn., following an extended illness.

He retired from General Motors, Anderson, where he worked as a custodian for a number of years.

Survivors include his wife, Audrey Marie (Daniel) Goolsby; three sisters, Dexter Martin, Louella Henson and Doris Bartels; two brothers, Tom Goolsby and Beaumont Goolsby; and several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Greenhill Funeral Home, 8450 Highway 43, Florence, Ala. Burial will take place at Railroad Cemetery.

Visitation hours are 3 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Catherine M. Beouy

MUNCIE -- Catherine May Beouy, 82, former Daleville resident, died Feb. 8, 2003, at The Woodlands Nursing Home in Muncie.

John A. Meeks

NASHVILLE, TENN. -- John A. Meeks, 72, former New Castle, Florida and Anderson resident, died Feb. 5, 2003, at Southern Hills Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn.

He was born Nov. 11, 1930, in New Castle, the son of William and Thelma (Lowe) Meeks.

He was a graduate of New Lisbon High School, Class of 1950.

He served his country in the U.S. Air Force from June 1953 to Aug. 1, 1973, in England, Germany and the Netherlands. He served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars and retired with honors after 20 years with the rank of E6 tech sergeant.

In 1981 he retired from General Motors in Anderson after many years of employment.

He was a member of the UAW.

Survivors include an aunt, Mary Agnes Allen of Dayton, Ohio; two nieces, Rosemary (husband, Larry) Sweazy of Noblesville and Mary Alice (husband, Dean) Farling of Franklin, Tenn.; six nephews, James A. Meeks of Nashville, Tenn., John Glenn Meeks of St. Petersburg, Fla., Pete Woods, Merrill Woods, Pat (wife, Denise) Woods and Sean (wife, Christy) Woods, all of Florida; two sisters-in-law, Mary Lee Woods of Florida and Mary J. Whitmill of Chesterfield; several great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins; and a stepnephew, Larry L. (wife, Pat) Adams of Lawrence.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his twin brother, James E. Meeks; and a brother, Donald Woods.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Macer-Hall Funeral Home, 600 S. Main St., New Castle, officiated by the Rev. Bill House. Burial will follow at South Mound Cemetery where military graveside rites will be conducted by a contingent from the U.S. Air Force.

Friends may call two hours prior to the Monday service at the funeral home.
