Sidney L. Jones
Nov. 22, 1952 -- July 23, 2003
DECATUR, Ill. -- Former Anderson resident Sidney Lee "Flammie" Jones, AKA Cindy M. Jones, 50, of Decatur, Ill., departed life unexpectedly on July 23, 2003, at Decatur Memorial Hospital.
Sidney was born Nov. 22, 1952, in Gunnison, Miss. Sidney was the daughter of Russell and Dorothy Mae Jones. Sidney moved to Anderson at the age of 7. She graduated from Anderson High School in 1971.
While living in Anderson, Sidney was employed at Delco Remy for eight years. In 1982 she moved to Decatur, Ill., where she spent time being a good homemaker and doing community service work. Sidney also attended the Decatur Area Technical Center and Christ Tabernacle Church in Decatur, Ill..
Sidney was a loving caring mother who enjoyed spending time talking to her children and grandchildren.
Sidney leaves to cherish her memories, one son, Curtis Allen III of Decatur, Ill.; two daughters, Katrina Lynn Allen-Hailey of Augusta, Ga., and Anitra Freddie LaSalle Jones Malone of Anderson; two grandchildren, Nygel DeMarkus Hailey and Jayla D'Nitra Streeter; mother, Dorothy Mae Jones of Decatur, Ill.; father, Russell Lee Jones of Clarksdale, Miss.; sisters, Bettie Jean Jones-Allen and Patricia Ann Jones-Powell, both of Indianapolis, Tonya Hood of Anderson, Sandra Hood- (Jimmy) Wilson of Wentzville, Mo., Sharon Kay Steans of Sumter, S.C., Valerie Jackson of Arlington, Ill., Renee Hood, and Stacey Clark-Mitchell, both of Decatur, Ill.; two brothers, Steven Troy Steans and James Jones, both of Decatur, Ill.; aunts, Joseph Mae Smith of West Memphis, Ark., Helen Hobbs of Memphis, Tenn., and Katie Howard of Maywood, lll.; and uncles, J.D. Finley of Atlanta, Ga. and Donell Finley of Montgomery, Ala.
Sidney leaves behind special nephews, Christopher "POO-PIE" Montgomery and Thomas "Scooter" Evans Jr.; and special niece, Stephanie Steans.
Sidney also leaves special friends, Michael Baker and Curtis Allen Jr.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Sidney was preceded in death by her grandparents, a niece, three nephews, an aunt and an uncle.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at L.C. May Funeral Services, Anderson, with the Rev. Ernest Prince officiating. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery, Anderson.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Robert S. Thomas
AMARILLO, Texas -- Former Anderson resident Robert "Bob" Stephen Thomas, 67, Amarillo, died July 26, 2003.
He served 21 years and retired as first sergeant in the Marine Corps having served in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He retired as human resource manager at Baptist St. Anthony's in 1998.
Survivors include his wife of almost 32 years, Linda Thomas; six sons, Keven (wife, Florence) Thomas, Kris (wife, Sherry) Thomas, Kory Thomas of Daleville, Jimmy (wife, Dorrane) Thomas, Ronnie (wife, Jennifer) Thomas and Eddie Thomas; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Southlawn Assembly of God with the Rev. Jerad Middaugh and Jerald and Janice Middaugh officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery by Memorial Park Funeral Home, 6969 E. Interstate 40.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society.
Linda B. Cordry
Dec. 14, 1950 -- July 28, 2003
Linda B. (Bammann) Cordry, 52, Anderson, died peacefully at home on July 28, 2003, after a one-year battle with cancer. Her family was with her at the time of her death.
She was born Dec. 14, 1950, in Erie, Kan., the youngest child of Elmer E. "Pete" and Berniece Bammann.
She was the residential director for Elmcroft of Muncie, an assisted living and Alzheimer facility, when diagnosed with cancer. Linda was a devoted wife, mother and Christian woman working alongside her husband in his full-time ministry. Their ministry among the churches of Christ took them to Arkansas, Kansas, Ohio, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Indiana.
She was awarded the bachelor of arts degree in psychology from Millersville University in Millersville, Pa., and the master of arts degree in gerontology from Ball State University in Muncie.
She enjoyed jogging, reading and quilting.
She is survived by her husband of 35 years, David S. Cordry; two sons, Sean and wife Melynda Cordry of Orange City, Iowa, and Benjamin Cordry of Elyria, Ohio; her grandchildren, Savannah and Duncan Cordry.
She is also survived by her sisters, Patsy Graebner of Derby, Kan., Jane and husband Jim Waller of St. Louis, Mo., and Carolyn and husband Jim Tucker of Knoxville, Tenn.; brother, Elmer E. Jr. and wife Irene Bammann of Dittmer, Mo., and rural Brazelton; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, Elmer Bammann; mother, Berniece (Goshert) Bammann; and her eldest sister, Evelyn Bammann.
A memorial service will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Robert D. Loose Funeral Homes & Crematory, South Chapel, 200 W. 53rd St., Anderson, with Warren Kenney and Randy Chapman officiating.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the South Chapel.
According to her wishes, her body was cremated with her cremains to be scattered over a favorite waterfall in western Maryland.

Catherine E. Craig
Oct. 10, 1914 -- July 28, 2003
ALEXANDRIA -- Catherine E. Craig, 88, Alexandria, died July 28, 2003, at her daughter's residence in Alexandria after an extended illness.
She was born Oct. 10, 1914, in Fort Recovery, Ohio, the daughter of William and Elizabeth Stein Fowler, and moved to Alexandria in 1964 from Ohio.
Catherine and her late husband Wayne were co-owners of Craig Roofing Co. of Alexandria since 1964. She was a member of the Church of St. Mary at Alexandria.
Survivors include a son, Dick Bricker of Alexandria; four daughters, Betty (Max) Ables of Alexandria, Marge (Fred) Schenking and Mary Kay Gaw, all of Centerville, Ohio, and Dorothy (Rick) Voisard of Piqua, Ohio; two sisters, Rita (Leroy) Remaklus of Celina, Ohio, and Madonna (Louie) Rietz of Dayton, Ohio; two sisters-in-law, Agnes Fowler and Mary Fowler, of Fort Recovery, Ohio; brother-in-law, Edward Kaiser of Fort Recovery, Ohio; 18 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 23 years, Wayne Craig, in 1981; three sisters; and two brothers.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Church of St. Mary at Alexandria, 820 W. Madison St., with the Rev. Paul W. Cochran, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery in Alexandria.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Owens Funeral Home, 412 N. Harrison St., Alexandria. A Scripture service will take place at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Building Fund of the Church of St. Mary at Alexandria or the Community/VNA Hospice program through the funeral home.
Rev. Edwin H. Helm
May 12, 1926 -- July 27, 2003
The Rev. Edwin H. Helm, 77, Anderson, died Sunday, July 27, 2003, at his residence after an extended illness.
He was born May 12, 1926, in New Castle, and grew up in Parker City. He was a resident of central and northern Indiana most of his life. He was an ordained elder in the North Indiana Conference of the United Methodist Church. He was in the ministry for over 50 years and was on the pastoral staff of New Horizons United Methodist Church in Anderson for the past 11 years.
Churches he pastored during his career include Union Chapel Congregational Christian Church, Mount Olive/Cammack Methodist Church, Williamsburg/Webster Methodist Church, Markleville/Mechanicsburg/Zion Chapel Methodist Church, Anderson Emmanuel (now South Anderson) United Methodist Church, Monticello United Methodist Church, Elkhart Simpson United Methodist Church, Kendallville Faith United Methodist Church, West Shore Christian Fellowship (Muskegon, Mich.), Tracy United Methodist Church and New Horizons (Noble Street/Otterbein) United Methodist Church.
The Rev. Helm was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a member of the Anderson Noon Kiwanis Club, past president of the Anderson Ministerial Association, founder and past board member of Contact Help in Monticello. He started the Summer Drive-in worship in Monticello, which is still active today. He was a graduate of Ball State University and Christian Theological Seminary.
The Rev. Helm is survived by his wife, Ruth Anna (Walker) Helm, whom he married July 15, 1951, in Wilkinson; four children and their spouses, the Rev. Mark D. (wife, Kathy) Helm of Lapel, Lydia J. (husband, Michael) Nafpliotis of Marietta, Ga., the Rev. Stephen D. (wife, Julie) Helm of Jupiter, Fla., and the Rev. Daniel M. (wife, Andria) Helm of Mexico, Ind.; nine grandchildren, Jeffrey (wife, Tammy) Helm, Jason (wife, Rachel) Helm, James Helm, Jenna Helm, Nicholas Nafpliotis, Adrienne Helm, Ryan Helm, Courtney Helm and Peter Helm; two great-grandchildren, Alyssa and Jacob Helm; a brother, the Rev. Loran Helm of Parker City; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, A.E. and Mary Helm; twin brother, Edward A. Helm; three brothers, Richard Helm, Warren Helm and Terrance Helm; and a grandson, Paul Christopher Helm.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Anderson officiated by the Rev. Steve Holdzkom and the Rev. Dr. Marcus Blaising. Burial will be in Union Cemetery in Randolph County where military graveside rites will be conducted.
Visitation will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service and one hour before services Saturday at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to New Horizons United Methodist Church Building Fund/Sound System or Community VNA Hospice.
Dorothy C. Hill
May 23, 1911 -- July 26, 2003
FLAT ROCK -- Dorothy (Crafton) Hill, 92, Flat Rock, died July 26, 2003, at her residence.
She was born May 23, 1911, in Shelby County, the daughter of Thomas H. Crafton and Daisy Goodwin. She was a homemaker.
She married Paul A. Hill on Jan. 2, 1928.
Survivors include four daughters, Thelma J. SanMiguel and Betty L. Hill Gallo (husband, Jimmy), all of Columbus, Dianne H. Ray (husband, Terry) of Flat Rock and Marie Galloway (husband, Alan) of Indianapolis; 10 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; nine stepgreat-grandchildren; and a stepgreat-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Paul A. Hill, on Dec. 26, 1988; a son, Andrew J. "Jackie" Hill II of Anderson; brothers, Frank Crafton, Edward Crafton, Bernard Crafton and Melvin Crafton; and sisters, Mary Rush, Reba Mount, Jessie Isley and Bertha Tindall.
There will be no services or visitation. Private burial will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery.
A gathering of family and friends will be on Saturday at the Geneva United Methodist Church Annex from noon to 2 p.m. with a fellowship dinner served.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Southwestern Indiana.
Arrangements are being handled by Norman Funeral Home, Hope.
Donald L. Jenkins
Aug. 25, 1910 -- July 28, 2003
MARION -- Former Fairmount resident Donald L. Jenkins, 92, Marion, died July 28, 2003, at Marion General Hospital.
He was a musical therapist retiring from the VA Medical Center. He was a musician and did private piano teaching.
Survivors include a son, Michael (Lynn) Jenkins; daughter, Dondru (husband, Richard) Powell; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Velma F. (Titus) Jenkins.
Services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Armes-Hunt Funeral Home, 415 S. Main St., Fairmount, with the Rev. Jack St. John officiating. Burial will be in Park Cemetery in Fairmount.
Visitation will be one hour before services Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church, Fairmount.
Betty L. Maynard
Jan. 30, 1956 -- July 28, 2003
PENDLETON -- Betty Lu (Kleyla) Maynard, 47, Pendleton, died July 28, 2003, at St. John's Medical Center in Anderson.
She was born Jan. 30, 1956, in Pendleton, and was a lifelong resident. She was employed with the Pendleton Branch of the Bureau of Motor Vehicles from 1974 to 1981. Currently she worked for Meijer for more than five years at the 96th Street location in Indianapolis.
She was an avid football, basketball and NASCAR fan. Her passion was collecting Hallmark Christmas ornaments. She took great pride each year in lining her driveway with dozens of American flags to honor our country. She also enjoyed decorating extensively for Christmas.
Survivors include a daughter, Samantha Maynard; mother, Jean Ann (Henninger) Kleyla; sisters, Patti Sheward and Donna Blackwell; brothers, Ben and Robert Kleyla; niece, Hallie (husband, Mark) Brock; nephew, Tony Blackwell; and grand-niece, Jillian Brock.
She was preceded in death by her father, Herman Kleyla; brother, William J. Kleyla; and three nephews, Steven and Richard Blackwell, and Brian Miller.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Grovelawn Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service & Crematory, Bright Chapel.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Pendleton Emergency Medical Service or the Humane Society.
Esther M. Pogue
Oct. 4, 1913 -- July 28, 2003
GREENTOWN -- Esther Mae (Shafer) Pogue, 89, died July 28, 2003, at Century Villa Health Care in Greentown.
She was born Oct. 4, 1913, in Peru, Ind., to Otto and Nettie (Freeman) Shafer.
She was a homemaker and a member of Assembly of God Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Reba L. Sylvester and Jane Beckham, both of Anderson; son, Jerry (wife, Barbara) Shultz of Kokomo; daughter-in-law, Carolyn Shultz of Anderson; 14 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, D.E. Shultz, in 1929; her second husband, Russell Pogue, in 1961; her parents; a son, Robert V. Shultz; son-in-law, Paul E. Sylvester; and two brothers.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Flowers-Leedy Funeral Home, 105 W. Third St., Peru, with the Rev. John O'Brien officiating. Burial will be in Shrock Cemetery in Miami County.
Friends may call from 1:30 p.m. until time of service Thursday at the funeral home.
George O. Dietrich Jr.
Feb. 10, 1927 -- July 24, 2003
George O. Dietrich Jr., 76, Anderson, died July 24, 2003, at his residence after an extended illness.
He was born Feb. 10, 1927, in Mulberry and lived in the Anderson area for the last 12 years.
He was a 1945 graduate of West Lafayette High School. He received his bachelor of science degree in 1949 and his master's degree in 1956 from Ball State University.
He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He was a teacher/coach for Daleville, Steinsville and Cadiz schools and principal for the Orland and North Vermillion school systems, and a scout for the Cincinnati Reds baseball team.
He was a member of the American Legion and Alexandria Eagles. In the early 1950s, he formed a summer softball team for high school aged girls.
He is survived by his five children: twins Becky Dietrich of Muncie and Debbie and husband Steven Riga of Columbus, Darlene Dietrich of Muncie, twins Shawn and wife Eve Dietrich of Florida and Vaughn and wife Georgianna Dietrich of Anderson; sisters, Edith Goodnight of Rossville and Georgia Keller of Otterman; granddaughters, Sarah Riga, Kristin Riga and Leah Dietrich; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George O. Dietrich Sr. and Olivia (Parigan) Dietrich; and two brothers, Hank Dietrich and Charles Dietrich.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Robert D. Loose Funeral Homes & Crematory, South Chapel, with the Rev. Mike Adams officiating, and military rites conducted by VFW Post 266. Cremation will take place with private intermenty at a later date at East Maplewood Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the South Chapel.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
Alice M. Gahimer
PENDLETON -- Alice M. (Redmon) Gahimer, 75, died July 25, 2003, at her residence.
She had been employed at Western Electric, Guide Lamp and Electra Corp.
Survivors include two sons, Gregory Mark Bennett and Timothy Neal Bennett; a daughter, Brenda Marie Guyer; two sisters, Ersie Hilbert and Versie Collins; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 26 years, Clarence L. "Bun" Gahimer, and her first husband, Paul H. Bennett.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Erlewein Mortuary, Greenfield Chapel, 1484 W. U.S. 40, Greenfield, officiated by Dr. Damon Jones. Burial will take place at Mendon Cemetery near Pendleton.
Visitation hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
