BLUFFTON -- Mikel G. "Scarecrow" Lawson, 41, formerly of Mooreland, died July 25, 2003, at the Bluffton Regional North Medical Center following an extended illness.
He was a veteran who served his country in the U.S. Army.
He spent 25 years as a carnival worker throughout the United States and Canada, where he acquired a wide circle of friends who simply knew him as "Scarecrow."
Survivors include his parents, Earl and Eunice (Bradberry) LaRue; his companion, Arlene Hunt; three brothers, Shawn (wife, Donna) Lawson, Glenn (wife, Cindy) Lawson of Anderson, and Tad Abbott; three sisters, Pamela (husband, Gary) Gee, Terry (husband, Jack) Pittman and Robin (husband, Danny) Fetters; and numerous other relatives.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Main and Frame Funeral Home, Blue River Chapel, 3038 E. U.S. 36, New Castle, officiated by the Rev. David J. Dudenhofer. Burial will be in Mooreland Cemetery.
Visitation is two hours prior to the Tuesday service at the funeral home.
Marvin E. Lynch
March 11, 1916 -- July 26, 2003
ALEXANDRIA -- Marvin E. Lynch, 87, died July 26, 2003, at Community Hospital Anderson after a brief illness.
He was born March 11, 1916, in Alexandria, the son of J. Thomas and Jennie O. (Zile) Lynch. He lived in Alexandria his entire lifetime.
Marvin was a graduate of Alexandria High School, Class of 1934, and was the last surviving team member of the 1932 Alexandria Tigers basketball sectional champion team.
He was employed by Aladdin Industries, formerly of Alexandria, from 1934 to 1942; and at Delco Remy, formerly in Anderson, from 1942 to 1948. During that time, he also served with the U.S. Navy aboard the aircraft carrier USS Princeton. A well-known building contractor in the area, he had partnerships with the late Charles Kerr and the late Otto "Pete" Custer. During the last 10 years of his working career, Marvin was employed as a foreman for Consolidated Building Services in Anderson, retiring in 1977.
He was a longtime and dedicated member of the First United Methodist Church in Alexandria, where he had served as president of the church board and on numerous committees down through the years. He was a member of Alexandria Masonic Lodge 235, Alexandria Eagles Lodge 1771, Alexandria Elks Lodge 478, Scottish Rite-Valley of Indianapolis, Murat Temple of Indianapolis, the Madison County Shrine Club, Anderson Moose Lodge 150, Alexandria American Legion Post 87, past president of the Alexandria "A" Men's Society, and a member and past president of the Alexandria Lions Club.
Survivors include his wife, Helen (Cranfill) Lynch of Alexandria, whom he married Sept. 3, 1938; a son, Ronald (wife, Shannon) Lynch of Stockton, Calif.; two granddaughters, Reneé (husband, Tom) Parker of Fishers and Rochelle Lynch (fiancé, Mike Hoffman) of Birmingham, Ala.; a great-grandson, Justin Parker of Fishers; a stepgrandson, Cameron Beacham of Stockton, Calif.; two sisters-in-law, Evelyn Lynch of Alexandria and Maxine Cranfill of Muncie; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father in 1961; his mother in 1978; a son, Stephen E. Lynch, in 1989; and four brothers, Harold Lynch, Milby Lynch, Ralph Lynch and Maurice Lynch.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Owens Funeral Home, 412 N. Harrison St., Alexandria, officiated by Pastor Jerry R. Thomas of First United Methodist Church, Alexandria. Burial, with military honors, will take place at Park View Cemetery, Alexandria.
Calling hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and will include a 6 p.m. Masonic memorial service and a 7 p.m. Elks Lodge of Sorrow ceremony. There will be additional visitation one hour prior to the Tuesday service at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alexandria First United Methodist Church or to the Madison County Shrine Club Van Fund through the funeral home.

Marlyn Louise McCullough, 69, of Anderson, died July 26, 2003, at Community Hospital Anderson following an extended illness.
She was born Jan. 28, 1934, in Pittsburgh, Pa., and had been an Anderson resident since 1961. She was a homemaker.
She was a member of the Redeemer Presbyterian Church and a charter member of the Madison County Retarded Children's Association.
Survivors include her mother, Edna Delitch of Pittsburgh, Pa.; a son, David (wife, Louise) McCullough of Pensacola, Fla.; a daughter, Cindy McCullough of Chesterfield; her sister, Diane Miller of Glenwillard, Pa.; and two grandchildren, Ronald Dean McCullough III and Kimberly Susan McCullough; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald D. McCullough Sr.; her father, George Delitch; a son, Ronald Dean McCullough Jr.; and a sister, Shirly Creech.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service, 229 S. Rangeline Road, Anderson, officiated by the Rev. Jimmie Collie of First Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ of Flomaton, Ala. Burial will take place at Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery.
Calling hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Hopewell Center through the funeral home.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Emma Jean Lewark-Nagao, 78, former Pendleton resident, died July 26, 2003.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her children, Ronica (husband, Bruce) Fisher; Steven (wife, Karen) Lewark; Greg (wife, Nancy) Lewark; Cathy (husband, Roland) Chapdelainc; Tona (husband, Robert) Canter and Valesa (husband, John) Skaggs; two sisters, Ruby Morris and Margaret Rogers; a daughter-in-law, Jeanni Lewark; 17 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Nagao.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Flanner & Buchanan Funeral Center, 10722 E. Washington St., Indianapolis. Burial will take place at Washington Park East Cemetery, Indianapolis.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Kidney Foundation through the funeral home.
Jackie L. Sailers Sr.
Jackie L. Sailers Sr., 61, of Anderson, died July 26, 2003, at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie, following an extended illness.
He was an auto mechanic and filling station manager.
Survivors include his companion, Pam Oveline; seven children, Melinda Coffey, Beth (husband, Brian) Coffey, Jackie Sailers Jr., Nate Sailers, Dean (wife, Debbie) Sailers, Eric Sailers and Wayne Sailers; his brother, James L. Sailers; his sister, Elsie May (husband, Herman) Sweet; 16 grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Parson Mortuary, 801 W. Adams St., Muncie, officiated by Pastor Carl Stone. Burial will take place at Beech Grove Cemetery.
Visitation is two hours prior to the Wednesday service at the funeral home.
Vergil N. Vernon
Vergil N. Vernon 85, Ocala, FL., formerly of Indianapolis, died January 21, 2004.
He retired from Uniroyal in 1976, and was a U. S. Marine veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Pearl (Harrison) Vernon; children George Vernon, Charlotte Baird, Jerry Vernon, Donna Brummett and Linda VanDover; brother Sewell Vernon; sister Sherry Headden; several grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, January 26, 2004 at Flanner & Buchanan Funeral Center - Washington Park East, with calling on Sunday evening, January 25, 2004 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral center.
Burial: Washington Park East Cemetery.

ROSALIE MARIE CLOUSER “THE ROSE OF CARMEL” SAFRANEK, 70, Indianapolis, passed away February 15, 2004. She was born on May 2, 1933, and was preceded in death by her husband Frank A. Safranek on August 18, 1995, and her sister Mary Mahin, Dec. 25, 2003.
Rosalie was a loving mother of five and an accomplished designer with a gift for song. She will be remembered for her love of life, spirited personality and joyful laughter. Rose touched those around her and left a lasting impression on all those who had the pleasure of knowing her. Rosalie was a graduate of Ladywood St. Agnes in 1951 and was also Miss Indiana Statehouse in 1952.
She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Optimist Club and a former member of the Catholic Church Guild and Christ the King Church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or St. Vincent Hospice. Special thanks to St. Vincent Hospice.
Family prayer service: Friday, Feb. 20, 2004, at 9:15 a.m. at Flanner & Buchanan Funeral Center - Broad Ripple, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Christ the King Church. Friends may call Thursday 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral center.
Rose is survived by her five children Teresa Harriman, Frank A. Safranek III, Stephen Safranek, Mark Safranek and Chris Safranek; sisters Martha Bowling, Marie Suiters, Trudy McMasters and one brother Leo Clouser, Jr.; grandchildren Joseph Harriman, Jr., Cassandra Harriman, Benjamin Safranek, Brittany Safranek, Emily Davis, Andrea Safranek, Allyson Safranek, Tyler Safranek, Tony Safranek and Olivia Safranek.

MARVIN J. MARSHALL, 83, Carmel, passed away peacefully Sunday, February 15, 2004, with his family at his side.
He was born June 10, 1920.
His loving wife of 53 years Teresa Marshall, children Liza, Vernon, Carlyle, Bren, grandchildren Jennifer, Emily Sean, Shannon, and great-granddaughter Kirstie all survive him.
He was a teacher for 39 years and received recognition for his contributions as a leader in the Deaf Community. Marvin was diagnosed as having ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease).
A celebration of his life will be held at the Flanner & Buchanan Funeral Center - Broad Ripple, 1305 E. Broad Ripple Avenue, at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 21. Calling is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 20, from 4 to 8 p.m.

JOHN W. “JACK” PHELAN, 60, Carmel, passed away Monday, Feb. 16, 2004.
Jack was a professional musician and owned Phelan Music Studios for 35 years. A bass player, he studied at the Sorbonne in Paris, France, after attending IU. He retired from Rolls Royce in 2003 after 26 years. Jack was a member of Radiant Christian Life Church, where he played bass with the Praise and Worship group. He was also a charter and founding member of the Carmel Clay Chamber of Commerce. In his youth, he was a member of the Hoosier Hose Club, which led to his interest in firefighting. He was a Carmel volunteer Firefighter and an Honorary Indianapolis Firefighter. As K9VTS, he was an amateur ham radio operator for 45 years.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, at Flanner & Buchanan Funeral Center - Carmel. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20, at the funeral center.
He is survived by his wife Karri Fereday Phelan; son John Phelan; daughters Kim Bangs, Susan Phelan and Angie Watson; grandchildren Ryan, Steven and Kelly Bangs; father John D. Phelan; brothers Bill and Dan Phelan. His mother Ibby Phelan preceded him in death.
John Glen Steinhart III

John Glen Steinhart III 53, Indianapolis, died February 20, 2004.
He was the Deputy Director of the Indiana Grain Buyers and Warehouse Licensing Agency. John began his career in the grain industry over 35 years ago in the family business of Allison, Steinhart and Zook. He was currently serving as President of the American Association of Warehouse Control Officials and was committed to the protection of the American Farmer. He devoted many years to developing the character of our future citizens by serving as Cubmaster for Pack 98 and Scoutmaster for Troop 170 in Pike Township and served in many leadership capacities of North Star District of BSA.
He is survived by his wife Connier (Morris) Steinhart; son and daughter-in-law John and Christy Steinhart; sisters Maryann, Sharon and Kathy Steinhart; brother James G. Steinhart; uncle and aunt Mr. and Mrs. Robert H. Steinhart.
Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, February 25, 2004 at Flanner & Buchanan Funeral Center - Zionsville.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, February 26, 2004 at Christ Lutheran Church, 600 N. Ford Road, Zionsville, with wake to follow at the Steinhart's home so that friends and family may celebrate John's life.
Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers may be made to the St. Vincent Hospice, American Cancer Society or Christ Church Handbell Fund.

Mr. Grabants was preceded in death by his wife Anna Sprogis Grabants. He is survived by his children Daina Gzibouskis of Indianapolis, Juris Grabants of Sherrills Ford, NC, and Vilis Grabants, Jr., of Denver, NC; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 28, 2004, at Indianapolis Latvian Lutheran Church, 3650 Guion Rd., Indianapolis, IN 46222.

LILLIAN E. MAY HEATON, 87, Westfield, died Feb. 23, 2004.
She was the Deputy Attorney General for the State of Indiana from 1971-1974 under Theodore L. Sendak. Lillian was a member of First Baptist Church of Westfield and a member of Order of Eastern Star. She graduated from Lincoln Law School at the age of 18 and was Indiana’s youngest Bar Graduate at the age of 19.
Services: 11 a.m. Feb. 27 at Flanner & Buchanan Funeral Center - Washington Park North with calling from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26. Burial: Washington Park North Cemetery.
Lillian was preceded in death by her husband George D. Heaton and son David G. Heaton. Survivors: daughter Diane L. (O. Keith) Blauvelt; grandchildren Richard J. Ward and family, Robin D. Landrum and family; step grandchildren Kerry Blauvelt and family, Tammy Fraser and family and Linda Deck and family.
Memorial contributions may be made to the church or to St. Vincent Hospice.
