Suzanne M. Ross

March 30, 2004

Suzanne M. Ross, 61, of 16870 State Road 17, Culver, passed away Tuesday, March 30, 2004 at 7:59 a.m. in Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth.

She was born on Feb. 23, 1943, in Plymouth, to Ray and Bonnie (Sherland) Bope and was a lifetime area resident.

On Aug. 30, 2002, Suzanne and Robert Ross were married.

Suzanne was a member of the Culver VFW Auxiliary 6919 and the Plymouth American Legion Auxiliary. She was well known at the Culver VFW dining room for her friendly, bright smile, as she maintained the hungry lunch crowd that came in.

She is survived by her husband, Robert; her sons Charles (Nikki) Evans of Winamac, Stephen (Sara) Naylor-Evans of Plymouth, and Mark Schall of Plymouth; her daughters Kelly Evans of LaPorte, and Traci (Brian) McIntire of Culver. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; eight step-grandchildren; three step-daughters Diana Hanson, Susan Discotti, and Cindy Kennedy, all of Illinois; her mother, Bonnie Bope of Plymouth; her sisters Toni Samuels of Plymouth, Billi (Troy) Brantley of Plymouth, and Jamie (Chris) Lapp of Michigan; her brothers; Ray, Jr. (Sharon) Bope of Plymouth and Steve (Olice) Bope of Texas.

She was preceded in death by her son Mark Evans and by her father Ray Bope, Sr.

Services will be held Sunday, April 4, 2004, at 2:00 p.m at the Van Gilder Funeral Home, Plymouth, with Rev. Robert Schultz officiating.

Burial will be in the Culver Masonic Cemetery.

Visitation will be Saturday, April 3, 2004 from 4-7 p.m. at the Van Gilder Funeral Home, 300 West Madison Street, Plymouth. There will be a V.F.W. Auxiliary service held at 7 p.m. Saturday, at the funeral home.

The family requests that memorial contributions be given to the Culver EMS or to the Culver Fire Department.

James E. Smith

April 1, 2004

ARGOS - James E. Smith, 70, 19679 Fir Road, Tippecanoe, died Thursday, April 1, 2004 at 6:19 a.m. at Woodlawn Hospital, Rochester, following a sudden illness.

James was born June 20, 1933 in Warsaw to Arthur E. and Lurabelle (Geist) Smith. He has lived in the Marshall County area since 1970, moving from the Warsaw area.

On Sept. 5, 2004 he married Kay Chapple in Silver Lake.

He was a farmer and was employed at L & H Fertilizer until 1992. He retired in 1995.

He graduated from Atwood in 1951, was drafted into the U.S. Army on July 15, 1953 and was discharged June 6, 1955. After being discharged from the Army he started farming with his father, having bought a farm south of Warsaw on Jan. 23, 1958.

In 1970 he the family moved to the Tippecanoe farm.

He was a member of Mt. Cur Breeders Association for 26 years as past president, member of board of directors and vice president; American Legion Post 68 of Argos; a life member of National Rifle Association; Wyatt Coon Hunters Club; Tennessee Treeing Brindle Association; Indiana Squirrel Hunters Association; National Kennel Club, Kemmer Stock Mt. Cur Breeders; National Cur and Feist Breeders Assocation (breed prep) and Argos United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife Kay Smith at home; two sons Jay (Angela) Smith of Argos and Jeff (Sara) Smith of Argos; a grandson Mathew (Jessica) Smith of Argos; a granddaughter Karla Kay Smith of Myrtle Beach, Fla.; a sister Lois Cobb of Fort Myers, Fla.; a brother Tom (Janet) Smith of Warsaw.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a niece and a nephew.

Services will be Monday, April 5 at 2 p.m. in Grossman Funeral Home, 208 N. Michigan St., Argos, with Pastor Bob Rice officiating.

Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Argos.

Visitation will be Sunday, April 4, 4-8 p.m., and one hour prior to services in the funeral home.

Memorial gifts may be given to American Heart Association.

Eugene M. Stewart Sr.

March 31, 2004

PLYMOUTH - Eugene M. Stewart, Sr., 77, a resident of Garden Court East the past 10 years, died at home, 501 Pennsylvania Ave., at 8:20 a.m. on Wednesday, March 31, 2004. Eugene died, following an illness, in the presence of his family and the Marshall County Hospice. He has made Plymouth his home since 1964.

Born in Riverside, W.Va. on Nov. 7, 1926, Eugene was the son of Manley and Grace Lee Dent Stewart. He attended East Bank West Virginia High School.

A World War II and Korean War veteran, Eugene was a sergeant in the Army Air Corp. He was a member of the American Legion Post 27.

Eugene and Naomi E. Egnor were married on August 16, 1946, in Schlyn, W.Va.

A production painter for McCord Corp. for 15 years, Eugene was a former member of the United Auto Workers Union.

A man of many interests, he enjoyed hunting along the river near his home in W. Va.

He loved all sports, especially football, college basketball and the Cubs. He liked birds and living near the river at Garden Court. 'Grandpa' enjoyed making his appointed rounds with his children and grandchildren at their various activities.

A member of the AARP, he was also a Hospice Walk volunteer walker for the past four years.

Eugene is survived by Naomi, his wife of more than 57 years and by their children James and Sharon Stewart, Plymouth; Patricia and Raymond Harness, Plymouth; Allen and Betty Stewart, Dyersburg, Tenn.; Mary and Dennis Hostetler, Plymouth, Grace and Raymond Hummel, Plymouth; Carl Stewart, Plymouth; Betty and Doug Whiteman, Plymouth; Ellen Kaiser and Bryan Brown, Walkerton; Candy and Mike Shufelt, Plymouth; Samantha Stewart, Plymouth. Twenty-four grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren also survive together with two brothers and four sisters. His brothers are: Glen Stewart, Newbern Tenn.; and Burl Stewart, El Paso, Texas. His sisters are Betty Wheaton, El Paso, Texas; Lola Stewart, Downers Grove, Ill.; Elizabeth Latshaw, Denver, Colo.; and Thelma Gorczyca Springfield, Mo. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Eugene was preceded in death by his parents and two sons: Eugene M. Stewart, Jr., and Kenneth Wayne Stewart. Two grandsons, five brothers and a sister have also predeceased him.

Visitation will be held on Friday, April 2, 2004, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, and for one hour prior to funeral services on Saturday.

The funeral services, officiated by the Rev. R.D. Humphrey, pastor of the House of Prayer, where Eugene worshipped, 12450 Plymouth-Goshen Trail, Plymouth, will be at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 3, 2004.

Interment will be in New Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth.

Memorial gifts in Eugene's memory may be made to the Center For Hospice, 112 S. Center St., Plymouth, the American Heart Association or the House of Prayer.

William H. Brown

March 31, 2004

KOUTS - William H. Brown, 85, of Culver for 20 years, formerly of LaCross, died Wednesday as a result of an accident in Starke County.

He is survived by his Brian (Trinny) Brown of Kouts; two stepsons Doyle Gunnells of South Carolina and Hubert (Sandy) Gunnells of Texas; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Kosanke Funeral Home, Kouts.

Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery, LaCrosse.

Visitation will be Friday, 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial gifts may be given to the donor choice.

Carl Johnston, Jr.

April 2, 2004

CULVER - Carl Johnston, Jr., 66, of 13801 State Road 17, Culver, passed away Friday, April 2, 2004 at 7:15 a.m. at his home in Culver.

He was born on Nov. 28, 1937 in Goshen to Carl and Geneva (Baker) Johnston.

On July 5, 1959 in Donaldson, Rosemary Hite and Carl Johnston, Jr. were married. They had been married for 44 years.

Carl graduated from Bourbon High School in 1956 and served his country in the United States Army from 1961 to 1963. He worked for United Technologies for 37 years and was a member of the Plymouth Moose lodge #741.

Carl is survived by his wife, Rosemary; daughter, Angela Becktel of Plymouth; son, Brian Johnston of Culver; granddaughter, Danielle Becktel of Plymouth; his father, Carl Johnston of Bourbon; brother, Bob Johnston of Indianapolis; and half-brothers, Arthur Winkle of Bourbon and Richard Winkle of Indianapolis.

Carl was preceded in death by his mother Geneva Sheaks and his step-mother Betty Johnston.

Friends may call Monday, April 5 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Van Gilder Funeral Home, 300 West Madison Street, Plymouth.

Services will be Tuesday, April 6 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Charles Krieg officiating.

Burial will be in Burr Oak Cemetery.

April 1, 2004

KNOX - Dennis G. Cole, 92, of 3680 East St. Road 8, Knox, died Thursday, April 1, 2004 at Countryside Place Nursing Home, Knox.

He is survived by six sons, Bill (Jerri) Cole, Knox; Albert Cole, North Judson; James Cole, LaPorte; Willis Cole, Knox; Roger D. Cole, Osceola and Robert (Lynn) Cole, Knox; five daughters, Denise Cole, Knox; Janet Trader, Indianapolis; Wanda (William) Landrum, Knox; Patty (Don) Lawson, North Judson; Connie (Chris) Johnson, Knox; 15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services are today at 11 a.m. at the Braman and Son Memorial Chapel, Knox, with Rev. Everett Mann officiating.

Burial will follow in the Round Lake Cemetery, Knox.

BOURBON - Bernice E. Boyer Metheny, 78, of 315 W. Center St., Bourbon, died Friday, April 2, 2004 at 6:55 p.m. in Elkhart General Hospital.

She is survived by sons, Dan (Connie) Boyer, North Judson; David (Christine) Boyer, Mt. Airy, Md.; Kevin (Ruth) Boyer, Bourbon; sister, Alice Allen, Grants Pass, Ore.; brothers, Lawrence (Helen) Miles, Woodford, Va.; Joseph (Kathleen) Miles, Bethel, Mo.; Bob (Valeta) Miles, Palmyra, Mo.; Ken (LaOra) Miles, Sarasota, Fla.; Mark (Betty) Miles, Olympia, Wash.; Dean (Marie) Miles, Crossville, Tenn.; Gerald Miles, Olympia, Wash.; Curtis (Linda)Miles, Olympia, Wash.; Merle (Donna) Miles, Bethel, Mo.; John (Jean) Miles, Milan, Ill.; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Visitation is Tuesday, April 6 from 2 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Deaton Funeral Home, 115 S. Main St., Bourbon. Also, one hour before services in the church on Wednesday.

Services will be on Wednesday, April 7 at 11 a.m. in the Plymouth Church of the Brethren with Pastor David Kerkove officiating.

Burial will follow in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Bourbon.

Memorial contributions may be made in Bernice's name to Elkhart General Hospital Foundation in care of oncology services.

Ashton James Miller

April 2, 2004

WALKERTON - Ashton James Miller was stillborn on Friday, April 2, 2004 at Starke Memorial Hospital, Knox.

He is survived by his parents, Jason and Denise Miller of Walkerton; grandparents, Gene and Linda Schwartzlose, Olney, Ill. and William and Sharon Miller, Knox; and a sister, Emily Dingman of Walkerton.

Graveside services were held Sunday at Round Lake Cemetery, Knox with the Rev. Oran Miller officiating.

Braman and Son Memorial Chapel, Knox was in charge of the arrangements.
