Harold Harrison Fisher
September 7, 2003
THREE OAKS, Mich. - Harold Harrison Fisher, 90, died at about 6 p.m. Sept. 7, 2003 in his sleep during an afternoon nap at Pilgrim Manor in Plymouth. Harold had been at the nursing home for just a few months after moving from Three Oaks Michigan to live with his daughter in Tippecanoe.
He had been in very good health throughout his life retaining a keen sense of humor and a sharp awareness until about 10 days ago when he was confined to bed. He did not suffer. He died of old age and was the joy of the nursing home and his family. He lived a wonderful, full and long life and was loved by many. Near the end he knew his time of transition was fast approaching and yearned to be on with it all. He was a star gazer and longed to be among the stars.
His daughter had arranged a family reunion for him on June 28, 2003 when both his sons, his daughter, his daughter-in-law, his grandchildren and one great-grand-daughter came from as far away as California, North Carolina and the Detroit area. It was a joyful and fitting send off for the grand patriarch of the Fisher family and he enjoyed it thoroughly singing favorite old songs.
Harold was born May 4, 1913 in Three Oaks, Mich., where he attended grade and high school, graduating in 1930. His parents were Edward L. Fisher and Josephine Habel Fisher. Harold married his school sweetheart, Arlene Dolores Davis June 2, 1933 in Three Oaks.
Harold and his wife moved to Niles, Mich., in 1933 and was employed by the U.S. Postal Service where he was assistant postmaster for 20 of the 32 years he was employed there. Harold was commissioned second Lieutenant in the Officers Corps, Adjutant Generals Department in 1940. He served in World War II from 1942 to 1947 and in the U.S. Air Force in the Far East (Japan) from 1949 to 1952 where he was promoted to Major and was the Commander of the First Air Postal Squadron.
Harold was awarded a Bronze Star with two Oak Leaf clusters, The American Theatre Service Medal, The World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Germany and Army of Occupation Japan, The Korean Service Medal, The Sicilian Campaign Service Medal, Naples Foggia Campaign, Rome-Arno Campaign, Southern France Campaign, The Rhineland Campaign, Northern Appenines Campaign and the Meritorious Unit Commendation.
He served in this position, sometimes commandeering airplanes to get mail to the troops on the front lines. All of this was so essential in an era before e-mail existed. Regular mail was the only way the troops were able to communicate with their families. He was awarded a Lieutenant Colonels rank in the reserves after the war.
His wife Arlene preceded him in death in 1986. In 1987 he was remarried, his second wife Millie Ritzler, also in Three Oaks, died in 1999. His brother Ken and Sister Cleo Klute preceded him in death by many years.
He is survived by three children: Peter (Esther Nesselhuf) Fisher of Asheville, N.C., Patrick of Napa, Calif., and Yanette of Tippecanoe; and five grandchildren, Gayle Hobert, Brian Fisher, Antoinette Fisher, Jessica Fisher and Erik Fisher. He had one great-grandchild, Joseph Hobert and one great-great-grandchild, Lauren Hobert.
An official military honors service will be held at the Forrest Lawn Cemetery in Three Oaks at 2 p.m. on Monday Sept. 22, 2003.
Donations may be given to Potawatomi Wildlife Park, 16998 State Road 331, Tippecanoe, IN 46570.

Jim is survived by his wife and by their three sons and three daughters. Their sons are: Rich P. and Christy Rospopo, Argos; Justin A. Rospopo, at home, and James P. Rospopo, Jr., Chicago, Ill.
