Bryant D. Gesford
PERU - Services for Bryant D. Gesford, 77, Peru, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Flowers-Leedy Funeral Home in Peru.
He died at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, 2006, in St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.
Pastor Robert Stuck will officiate at the services. Burial will be in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Peru.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday in the funeral home.
Jay A. Martin
Services for Jay A. Martin, 48, Logansport, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Fisher Funeral Chapel.
He passed away at 8:40 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2008, in his residence following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born Feb. 26, 1960, in Logansport, he was the son of Keith A. and Roselee B. Blackburn Martin. He was married to Michele Kroeger, who survives.
Jay attended Pioneer High School and graduated from Saint Louis High School in Honolulu, Hawaii.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps from 1978 to 1981.
For 26 years, Jay owned and operated Martin’s Tree Service.
A member of the Hillcrest Baptist Church, Jay was also a member of the Coin Club and the Arborist Society.
Surviving with his wife are one sister, Lavona Martin, Logansport; one brother-in-law, James Brewer and his wife, Holly, Logansport; one sister-in-law, Lynne Morrison and her husband, Mike, Detroit, Mich.; three nieces and two nephews.
Burial, with full military rites conducted by members of the U.S. Marine Corps, will be in Davis Cemetery, near Burnettsville.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today and one hour before services Saturday at the funeral chapel.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Hillcrest Baptist Church and the American Cancer Society.
Marjorie M. White
A Mass of Christian Burial for Marjorie M. White, 93, Lyons, Wis., formerly of Logansport, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in All Saints Catholic Church, with chapel prayers at 9:20 a.m. in Kroeger Funeral Home.
She passed away at 2:20 a.m. Thursday, Oct., 23, 2008, in Aurora Memorial Hospital of Burlington, Wis.
Born Aug. 18, 1915, in Columbus, Ohio, she was the daughter of Fred Morris and Myrtle Isabel Morris. She was married May 20, 1939, in Columbus, Ohio, to John E. “Jack” White, who preceded in death Feb. 11, 1977.
Before moving to Wisconsin several years ago, Mrs. White had been a member of All Saints Catholic Church and All Saints Ladies Society. She was a retired educational assistant in the Logansport Schools.
Marge had also been a member of the Circle Three Club, First Womens’ Study Club and the Cass County Historical Society, where she was also a volunteer. She was a former board member of Cass County Mental Health Association and a former member of Literacy Volunteers of Cass County.
Survivors include sons, Craig (Joyce) White, Lees Summit, Mo., John D. “Doug” (Chris) White, Logansport; daughters, Julie (Jerald) Farrow, Jackson, Mo.; Ellen (Ralph) Wagner, Hilton Head, S.C.; Mary Kay (Robert) Breshears, Lees Summit, Mo.; Carolyn Ply, Lyons, Wis.; and Anita (Carl) Beckner, Grayslake, Ill.; sister, Jeanne Young, Worthington, Ohio; 17 grandchildren, two step grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Two brothers and one sister preceded in death.
Father Jeff Martin will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery.
Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home. The rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.

Gerald J. Nies
ROYAL CENTER - A Mass of Christian Burial for Gerald J. Nies, 86, Royal Center, will be at 1 p.m. Monday in All Saints Catholic Church.
He died at 3:50 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, 2008 in Chase Center, Logansport.
Born Dec. 20, 1921, in Pulaski County, he was the son of the late Lawrence and Mabel (Gerlach) Nies. He was married on Feb. 8, 1947, to Elsie M. Small, who preceded in death on Aug. 19, 1987.
Gerald was a 1940 Lucerne High School graduate. He was a medic in the U.S. Army, serving in the Pacific Theater during WWII with the battalion that liberated the Philippines.
Gerald was a member of All Saints Catholic Church. He enjoyed fishing, watching softball and working on his farm. He was also an avid Indiana basketball fan and he loved spending time with his grandchildren.
He was a machinist retiring from General Tire after 35 years.
Survivors include daughter, Mary Downhour, Royal Center; son, Ron Nies, Royal Center; daughter-in-law, Mary Lou Mason, Texas; four grandchildren, Billy Nies and Laura Nies, Texas, Chrissy Downhour, Royal Center and Angie Downhour, Fort Wayne; sisters-in-law, Betty Nies and Mary Ellen Nies, both of Royal Center, Peg Nies and Dorothy Thompson, both of Logansport; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one son, James William; four brothers, Basil, George, Keith and Walter Nies; and sister, Dorothy Renkenberger.
Burial, with military rites, will be in South St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Pulaski.
Friends may call from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday in Harrison-Metzger & Rans Funeral Home, Royal Center.

Jerry Lynn Boehning
FRANCESVILLE - Services for Jerry Lynn Boehning, 55, Lafayette, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Frain Mortuary, Querry-Ulbricht Chapel.
He died at 2:04 a.m. Monday, Oct. 27, 2008, in St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Lafayette.
Donald Waters will officiate at the services. Burial, with military graveside rites conducted by the American Legion, will be in Roseland Cemetery, Francesville.

Anthony ‘Tony’ Peters
MENTONE - Services for Anthony “Tony” Peters, 58, New Cumberland, W.Va., formerly of Mentone, will be held at noon Saturday in King Memorial Home.
He died Friday, Oct. 17, 2008, in West Virginia.
Pastor Kent Butcher will officiate at the services. Burial will be in Harrison Center Cemetery, Etna Green.
Friends may call one hour before services on Saturday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the New Cumberland Cemetery Association, New Cumberland, W.V.
Steven Joseph Starkes
WINAMAC - A community service of remembrance for Steven Joseph Starkes, 20, Winamac, will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at Frain Mortuary, Winamac, with Pastor Robert Boyd officiating.
Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with Pastor Fritz Photenhauer officiating. Following the service a memorial celebration will be held at Steven’s home in Winamac.
An additional funeral service will be held at the Concordia Lutheran Church, 2647 West Belmont Street in Chicago, at 1 p.m. CST on Saturday with Pastor H. David Brummer officiating. A memorial celebration will be held at 4300 North Marine Drive in Chicago, following the church services.
Steven passed away at 12:37 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2007, in Pulaski Memorial Hospital in Winamac.
Born Oct. 11, 1987, in Knox, he was the son of Dale and Elizabeth Henry Starkes. Steven was a member of the Concordia Lutheran Church, where he attended services with his father and stepmother. He was baptized at Hilltop Lutheran Church in South Bend and was a confirmed member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in North Judson.
Steven graduated from Winamac High School with an academic honors diploma in May 2006. While at Winamac, he participated in the Academic Super Bowl team and the cross country team. He was a member of the Fellowship of Christian Students. Steven received a certificate of achievement from the Indiana State Senate and the President’s Award for Educational Excellence upon graduation.
While in high school he earned a black belt in Tai Kwon Do and enjoyed doing volunteer work as a helper at the Pulaski Health Care Center in Winamac.
Before graduating, Steven attended the American School in Switzerland from 2002-03. During this time Steven traveled through Italy, Switzerland, France, Austria, and the Czech Republic. He took drama and acting classes in England. While there, he participated in the drama club and performed in Shakespeare’s “Much to do About Nothing” and many other performances.
He was active in the Model U.N. program and was a representative at the Paris Conference in 2003. He also participated in the Future Problem Solvers Club and the Environmental Club. He played squash and intramural tennis while in Switzerland.
Steven attended Culver Military Academy Summer Camp. While at camp, he was part of the Naval program, participated in many sports, and enjoyed the summer classes.
Most recently, Steven was a psychology major at DePauw University in Greencastle and was a member of the Progressive Club and the Young Democratic Club.
Steven was an avid skier. He enjoyed jogging and being outdoors. He also enjoyed playing the guitar. His interest in guitar began in his teens. He was self-taught, but also received lessons from Mark Hoffman of Winamac. He and Mark produced a CD and performed twice at the Culver Coffee Company.
Steven was a vegetarian in high school and slowly became a vegan by college.
Steven liked staying in Chicago with his family and enjoyed sailing. During his short life he crossed Lake Michigan multiple times and was a graduate of the Columbia Yacht School’s Junior Sailing Program. He also loved to interact with the many people at Columbia Yacht Club. Steven sailed with his family and friends throughout the Caribbean. Steven also enjoyed playing squash.
Steven was an avid reader and enjoyed listening to books on tape and went though most of the selection of the Chicago Public Library. He had an avid and curious mind and always enjoyed challenges, both intellectual and physical. Steven had the capacity to work hard and knew the meaning of self-discipline.
Steven was also a former employee of the Department of Natural Resources and worked in the Tippecanoe State Park in Winamac. He enjoyed working there because of the “wonderful people that worked there”. Steven worked at Starkes Law Office in Winamac. Steven was a former employee of the Comfort Inn in Rochester, and thought it was a good job cleaning rooms because he got a long workout and could listen to his tapes at the same time. He respected his co-workers and spoke highly of them and their lives.
Survivors include his father and step mother, Dale J. and Stacey Starkes, Winamac; his mother, Elizabeth Henry Starkes, Merrillville; step grandparents, Arthur and Patricia Kossman, Addison, Ill.; and adopted grandmother, Princess Renata zu Windisch-Graetz, Chicago.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Dr. Howard and Lena Henry, and paternal grandmother, ElVera Starkes.
Private burial services will take place in the McKinley Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Winamac.
Friends may call from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday and one hour prior to services on Friday at the funeral home.

Robert Lee Dawson
Services for Robert Lee Dawson, 83 of Logansport, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Fisher Funeral Chapel.
He died at 7:39 a.m. Monday, Nov. 5, 2007, in Logansport Memorial Hospital.
Born May 2, 1924, in Logansport, he was the son of the late Lee and Beatrice Irene Gresham Dawson. On June 25, 1944, in the Logansport EUB Church, he was married to Lorene Smith, who survives.
A veteran of the U.S. Army Medical Corps, he was a surgical technician and instructor during World War II.
A 1943 graduate of Royal Center High School, Robert attended Purdue University. For many years, he was engaged in farming. He was also retired from Ottinger’s Machine Shop, where he had worked as a superintendent for over 21 years.
Robert cared deeply for his community. For 24 years, he served on the Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees. During his tenure as board president, the Arbor was founded at Memorial Hospital. He had also served on the Pioneer Regional School Corporation Board from 1972 to 1980. While serving as school board president, he was instrumental in helping establish football as a varsity sport as well as the overseeing the addition of the high school pool at Pioneer.
Robert was a long-time member of Shiloh Christian Church. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 60.
His hobbies included woodworking and camping. He loved dogs, especially his canine companion, Daisy.
Surviving with his wife of 63 years are three daughters, Diana Winings and Vicki Hults and husband, Kerry, all of Logansport, and Jody Coppernoll and husband, Bruce, Royal Center; one son, Steven Dawson and his wife, Mary, Jones, Mich.; two brothers, Donald Dawson and wife, Marcia, Florida, Frank Dawson and wife, Pam, Payson, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren, Terry Winings, Lori Carbaugh, Robin McBride, Rachel Hylton, Zachary Dawson, Tonya Myers, Karla Costner, Kyle Reed, Aubrey Coppernoll and Aaron Coppernoll; and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Dean Dawson; and his son-in-law, Ronald Winings.
Pastors Tim McKaig and Roger Budde will officiate. Burial, with military rites, will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.
Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral chapel.
Memorial contributions may be made to Shiloh Christian Church, the Cass County Relay for Life project in affiliation with the American Cancer Society, and the Arbor Fund in care of the Memorial Hospital Foundation.
Nicholas J. Arone
NAPPANEE - Services for Nicholas J. Arone, 16, of Nappanee, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in First Presbyterian Church in Nappanee.
He died at 8:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, 2005, in Riley Hospital for Children, Indianapolis, where he had been a patient for two weeks.
Born April 30, 1989, in Rochester, he was the son of Joel and Nanette Biever Arone.
Nicholas was a sophomore at Northwood High School, where he was active in drama club and choir.
He lived most of his life in Nappanee, moving there when he was 2 years old.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Nappanee and was active in Pyramid Productions.
Surviving are his mother and stepfather, Nanette and Larry Fredericks, Nappanee; his stepmother, Stacee Arone, Rochester; maternal grandparents, Richard and Nancy Biever, Nappanee; paternal grandmother, Patricia Arone, Logansport; and a stepgrandmother, Norma Fredericks, Wakarusa.
His father; grandfather, Joseph Arone; and stepgrandfather, Keith Fredericks, preceded in death.
The Rev. Terry Tyler will officiate at the services. Burial will be in Union Center Cemetery.

Doris Belle Dodrill
Services for Doris Belle Dodrill, 81, of Logansport, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in First Church of the Nazarene.
She died at 2:38 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, 2005, in Logansport Memorial Hospital.
Born Oct. 5, 1924, in Logansport, she was the daughter of Walter N. and Annabelle E. James Lindzy. She was married Nov. 29, 1942, in First Church of the Nazarene in Logansport, to Cecil E. Dodrill, who survives.
Mrs. Dodrill was a devoted homemaker who especially loved her family.
She was a member of First Church of the Nazarene. She loved her church and enjoyed gospel music.
Also surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Warren “Bud” and Pam Dodrill, Logansport; three grandchildren, W. Scott Dodrill and his wife, Terry, Logansport, Lesley Shepherd and her husband, Jon, Schertz, Texas, and Lori Landis and her husband, Micheal, Lake Cicott; six great-grandchildren, Jonathan Shepherd and Lindzy Shepherd, both of Schertz, Texas, Kerry Dodrill and Kyle Dodrill, both of Logansport, and Mikenna Landis and Mallori Landis, both of Lake Cicott; and several nieces and nephews.
One son, Larry Wayne Dodrill; and two sisters, Emma Seits and Laura Mae Lindzy, preceded in death.
Dr. Horace Smith will officiate at the services. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.
