She died at 8:20 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, in Miller's Merry Manor. Born in Momence, Illinois, she was the daughter Peter Mark and Sarah Brownfield Madison. On July 26, 1940, in Kentland, she was married to Wilbur Ray Spencer who preceded in death Marh 19, 1990. A homemaker, she was a member of the Lake Cicott U.M. Church. She is survived by two sons, Richard Allen Spencer, Lake Cicott, and Wilbur Ray Spencer Jr., Logansport; two daughters, Donna Mae Lindsey, Metropolis, Illinois, and Nora Elaine Crudden, Brook, Indiana; two sisters, Gladys Hansen, Lake Cicott, and Mabel Hlousek, St. Louis, Missouri; sixteen grandchildren; and thirty-two great-grandchildren.

He died at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, in Miller's Merry Manor. Born in Logansport, he was the son of M.C. and Ruth Shirley Long Shaffer. On June 7, 1946, in Rochester, he was married to Maudie Mae Bowyer who preceded in death May 10, 1971. On Feb. 6, 1978, in Logansport, he was married to Ardella Leydet, who survives. He was retired from Conrail Railroad, where he worked as a conductor. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during WWII and was the recipient of the Purple Heart. He attended the Church of the Nazarene. He was a member of VFW Post 3790, American Legion Post 60, Tipton Masonic Lodge #33, Indianapolis Valley of Scottish Rite, the Murat Shrine Temple and the Eagles Aerie No. 323. Surviving with his wife are three sisters, Virginia Smith, Logansport, Irene Hoover, Mishawaka, and Patricia Willey, Elkhart; one grandchild; and four step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Ronald Clayton Shaffer; one brother and four sisters.

He died at 9:45 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002, in Miller's Merry Manor. Born Dec. 27, 1921, in Muncie, he was the son of the Rev. Dale Church and Esther Cowgill Beatty. On Oct. 27, 1950, in Mulberry, he was married to Edith Mae Phillippe, who survives. A 1941 graduate of Logansport High School, Jim served in the United States Army during World War II. In 1986, he retired from LDI Manufacturing where he had worked as a shearsman. Jim was a member of the First United Methodist Church. For four decades, Jim enjoyed spending time camping and traveling. He thoroughly enjoyed the time spent around the campfire and the friendships made through his and Edith's travels. His best roles in life were being a loving husband, devoted father and wonderful grandfather. Surviving with his wife are one son and daughter-in-law, Jarel and Georgette Beatty, Logansport; one daughter and son-in-law, Betsy and Bob Jarvis; one granddaughter, Stacey Weber, California; one grandson, Scott "Scooter" Jarvis, Logansport; one niece, Vickie McFall; and one nephew, Steve Finney. He was preceded in death by his sister, Martha Finney, and his son, David J. Beatty.

She died at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, in Logansport Memorial Hospital. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, she was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Sprick Welling. On July 5, 1947, in Cleveland, she was married to Ralph Cochrane, who preceded in death Jan. 20, 2002. A homemaker, she was retired from J.C. Penney's where she had worked as a clerk. She was a member of the Baptist Temple. Surviving are two daughters, Karen Zipper, East Windsor, N.J. and Patricia Pankow, Logansport; two brothers, Elmer and Art Welling; four grandchildren, Daniel Zipper, Laurie Zipper, Melissa Pankow and Crystal Pankow. She was preceded in death by one brother, Edward, and one sister, Elsie. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

He died at 8:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 13, 2002, in Logansport Memorial Hospital. Born in White County, he was the son of Raleigh and Mabel Mourer Guy. On Jan. 24, 1942, in Idaville, he was married to Alice Lorraine Rhea, who survives. For many years, he worked as an auto mechanic. He was retired from Rockwell International. He had also served as a school crossing guard. He attended Noble Twp. School and Logansport High School. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the Army Air Force. He was a member of the Eagles Aerie No. 323, the VFW Post 3790 and the American Legion Post 60. He liked to travel, especially to Arkansas. He enjoyed watching and feeding birds. He especially loved spending time with his kids, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Surviving with his wife of 60 years are his children, Harold G. Guy Jr., Logansport, Michael J. Guy, Jefferson, Arkansas, Helen K. Guy Howell, Logansport, Ronald W. "Skeet" Guy, Logansport; and Frances M. Guy Maloney, Logansport; four brothers, Keith Guy, Logansport, Kenny Guy, Lafayette, Raleigh Guy, Lafayette, and Howard Guy, Florida; one sister, Clara Guy Binney, South Bend; thirteen grandchildren; and sixteen great-grandchildren; Two sisters, two brothers and his parents preceded in death.

Kenneth Mason "Mase" Criswell, 81, Lafayette, died at 9:40 a.m. Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, in St. Elizabeth Hospital, Lafayette. Born in Salem, Indiana, he was the son of Marcus L. and Ella Boling Criswell. On Nov. 14, 1953, in Monticello, he was married to Amanda Mitchell, who survives. For twenty years, he worked as a carpenter and retired from Criswell Builders. He had also been engaged in farming. For 19 years, he worked at Bryans Manufacturing and he had also worked for two years in an alumninum plant. He attended Burnettsville High School and was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the First Baptist Church. He enjoyed gardening. Surviving with this wife are his children, Russell (Dee)Miller of Lafayette, Barbara (Bill) Dalrymple, Charloot, NC, Vickie (Andy) Tetzloff, Lafayette, Arlie L. Criswell of Idaville, Jessie (Carmalita) Miller, and Ed (Nancy) Criswell, Panama City, Florida; two brother, Ernest Gale Criswell, Burnettsville, and Boyd (Jeannie) Criswell, Idaville; three sisters, Lyndell (Bob) Hawkins, Americus, Faye (Bob) Johnson, Valparaiso, and Joy (Jack) Shaffer, Panama City, Florida; thirteen grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
Richard Haygood

Born in Wolcott, he was the son of Leslie Oren and Anna Louise Gibson Haygood. He was married to Martha Irene Shoop, who survives. In May of 1991, he retired from Union Local #20, Lafayette, where he had worked as a journeyman. He had also co-owned and operated Haygood Brothers Southside Shell and Haygood Brothers Sheet Metal Shop, both in Monticello. From 1951 to 1955, he service as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. He served one year in the Korean War. His hobbies included restoring airplanes and also an antique KBI 1949 truck. A private pilot, he loved camping and fishing. Surviving with his wife are two sons and three daughters-in-law, Paul B. & Kim Haygood, Idaville, Richard D. & Diana Haygood, Macy, and Lenita Moon, Idaville; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles R. and Mary Haygood, Albuquerque, New Mexico, Kenny G. & Hulda Haygood, Idaville, and Marvin R. and Mable Haygood, Monticello; one sister and brother-in-law, Barbara A. and Dorwin Justice, Albuquerque, New Mexico; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Wayne L. Haygood.
