Geneva A. Griest, 89, formerly of Twelve Mile, died at 8:10 p.m. Sunday, July 27, 2003, in Logansport Memorial Hospital. Born April 18, 1914, in Deer Creek Township, Cass County, she was the third child of eleven born to Otto and Clara Estella Plank Hinkle. A 1932 graduate of Onward High School, she was married in Bethlehem Township, Cass County, to Harold Alvin Griest on May 16, 1941. He preceded in death June 15, 1977. She was a member of the Bethlehem United Methodist Church where she had served in many offices and taught Sunday School for several years. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women and had been an officer for many years. A very active member of the Order of Eastern Star since 1944, she was a member of the Royal Center Chapter No. 375. She had served the former Twelve Mile Chapter as Worthy Matron four times and when that Chapter closed, she became active in the Fulton Chapter. She also served as the Grand Representative of the Delaware Grand Chapter in Indiana from 1993 to 1995. As she was growing up, she learned not only how to garden, cook, wash, iron and take care of younger siblings, but also how to drive the horses to help with the farming. As a teenager, she was hired out to neighbors to help do housework and to help mothers take care of new babies. Before her marriage, she had been employed by several families as a live-in housekeeper in both Cass County and Indianapolis. She had also worked at Kresge Dime Store in downtown Logansport. She was a stay-at-home mom while her children were young and had worked as a cook at Chase Center and Memorial Hospital for about ten years prior to her retirement in 1976. She was a recipient of the Pharos Tribune's Good Neighbor Award in 1991. This was a recognition of all the things she had done all of her life as she always put others ahead of herself, be it family, friends, neighbors, or anyone she knew was in need of something. A resident of Twelve Mile for more than 60 years, she was known as the "Biscuit Lady" for her terrific biscuits at the Community Breakfasts. She thoroughly enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening and canning, and then sharing the goodies with many of her friends and neighbors. Many of the Twelve Mile community looked forward to the gooseberry pies that she would furnish for the suppers at the church and the Christmas holiday season was never quite complete without the dozens and dozens of cookies that she made to be given away. Her main hobby was quilting and she normally was working on at least one quilt at home besides quilting with a group once a week. A stroke in April 2002 paralyzed her left side and she was unable to quilt after that. Her goal, until the time of her death, was to get enough use of her left arm and hand to be able to quilt again, as well as to make pies and biscuits. The stroke may have hindered her physically, but thankfully, it did not affect her mind. She would surprise many of her visitors by giving details of incidents that most people had forgotten. She continued to be concerned about her family and friends. Many times she would say that they needed to "take care of themselves." She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, and friend to all and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Marvin and Lois Griest, Logansport, and Larry and Marquita Griest, Indianapolis; two daughters and one son-in-law, Doris and Eldon Byers, Logansport, and Hilda Griest, Fort Wayne; two grandsons and one granddaughter-in-law, Roger and Sandra Knebel of Royal Center, and Robert Knebel of Wilmington, North Carolina; two granddaughters and two grandsons-in-law, Susan and Eric Von Tobel, Royal Center, and Cynthia and Scott Voegele of Oakland, California; six great-grandchildren, Austin Knebel, Chandra Mullins, Madison Von Tobel, Malori Von Tobel, Miles Von Tobel, and Lauren Voegele; one great-great-granddaughter, Bria Rae Mullins; three brothers and five sisters-in-law, Kenneth & Donnabelle Hinkle of Lucerne, Everett & Patricia Hinkle of Logansport, Keith and Carole Hinkle of Logansport, Phyllis Hinkle of Logansport, and Mary Griest of Lyons, Colorado; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three brothers, Harold Hinkle, Arthur Eugene Hinkle and Ray Hinkle; four sisters, Leona Patterson, Esteline Keplar, Donna Bell Harvey and Nancy Kunkle; one son-in-law, Arnold Knebel; and one daughter-in-law, Patricia Griest. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bethlehem United Methodist Church, the Worthy Grand Matron's Project of the Indiana Grand Chapter Order of the Eastern Star or to a favorite charity.
