Dorothy Ellen Frey Roudebush, 80, of 250 Shenandoah Drive, formerly of 6714 S. County Road 200 E., died at 1:48 p.m. Thursday, July 29, 2004, in St. Elizabeth Medical Center. She had been a patient there since Thursday, July 22. Born in Lafayette on Feb. 12, 1924, she was a lifelong area resident and a graduate of Romney High School. She married Harry W. Julian on June 18, 1942, in Romney. He died Feb. 27, 1968. On June 11, 1971, she married Harley W. Roudebush in Chalmers, and he died in 1998. She was a homemaker and for a brief period she worked at St. Elizabeth Hospital, now St. Elizabeth Medical Center, and at Kyger Bakery. Mrs. Roudebush was a member of Brown Street United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 11 Auxiliary and the YMCA Arthritis Exercise Class and a charter member and president of the Marine Corps League Auxiliary. Surviving are three stepdaughters, Harlene McCallum of Indianapolis, Letticia Barrett of Reynolds and Shari Vandergraff of Romney; two stepsons, Larry Roudebush of Reynolds, and Ira Roudebush of Lafayette; and a sister, Alverna Farrier (husband: Robert) of Englewood, Ohio. Also surviving are a niece, Lori Fultz, a nephew, Robert Farrier III, 4 great-nephews, A.J. Farrier, Bobby Farrier, John Farrier and Jimmy Fultz. Preceded in death by a brother, Alva Francis Frey. Pauline M. Norrod Garrett, 86, of 701 Armory Road, died at 7:10 p.m. Saturday, August 7, 2004, in St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Lafayette. She previously resided at 8422 E. County Road 800 S., in Lafayette. Born in Livingston, Tenn., on June 24, 1918, she had lived in Tippecanoe county most of her life. She was a graduate of Williamsport (Ind.) High School. She married Ledmon E. Garrett in 1935, he died in 1995. Mrs. Garrett was a homemaker. She enjoyed gardening, especially flower gardening. survivors include two sons, Ernest D. "Ernie" Garrett of Clarks Hill, Earl Garrett of West Lafayette; two daughters, Mary A. James (husband: Robert) of Carmel and Jeannie G. Tyrrell of Delphi; and a sister, Hazel Spalding of West Lafayette. Also surviving are 9 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by 6 sisters and 9 brothers.

Ruth Louise Kasch, 65, Logansport, died at 7:25 p.m. Wednesday, July 28, 2004, in Chase Center. Born February 9, 1939, in Cass County, she was the daughter of Elmer A. and Mary Widner Kline. Her mother survives in Logansport. On June 8, 1958, in Wheatland Avenue United Methodist Church, she was married to Joseph L. Kasch, who survives. In 2000, she retired from Hoosier 103 Radio Station, where she had worked as office manager. She was a member of the VFW and American Legion Auxiliaries. Ruth enjoyd playing cards and Bingo. She also enjoyed needlepoint and spending time with her grandchildren. Surviving with her husband and mother are one daughter, Diana Bagley, Logansport; one son, David Kasch, Logansport; and two grandsons, Brent Bagley and Dane Miller. She was preceded in death by one son, Donald A. Kasch, and one brother, Elmer A. Kline, Jr. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Horace Glen "Sharpie" Loy, age 70, of 1216 Brown Street, Lafayette, died at St.Elizabeth Medical Center on Wednesday July 21, 2004. Born in Columbia, Kentucky March 24, 1934, he had resided in Lafayette the past 50 years. Mr. Loy was an auto-body repairman, having worked for Glenn R. Pitman Motors in Lafayette and Dan's Body Shop in Delphi. A member of the Linwood Church of Christ, he enjoyed fishing and traveling and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. Surviving is a daughter, Theresa Loy of Lafayette, a son, Darrell G. Loy (wife: Renne) of Delphi; 2 brothers, Jerry Loy (wife: Diana) and Wm. Kenneth Loy (wife: Linda),4 sisters, Doris Glaser (husband: Lowell), Opal Phillips (husband: Jackie), Ruth Jordan (husband: Robert) and Virginia Love, all of Lafayette. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Darrell Loy Jr., Amanda Loy,& Geo. Van Pelt. One great-grandson Adam Joshua Loy also survives. Preceded in death by a daughter, Alice Gail Loy and three brothers, Morris, Randell and Robt. Loy. Those desiring may contribute in memoriam to the Diabetes Foundation or the Heart Fund.

David G. Bray, 54, of 7813 S. County Road 800 W., died at 6:55 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, 2004, in his home. Born December 2, 1949, in Lafayette, he was a lifetime area resident and a 1967 graduate of East Tipp High School. He married Etta M. Linedecker on July 21, 1979, in Attica. She survives. Mr. Bray had worked for Frito-Lay in Frankfort for the past three years. He previously had worked for Jerry's Body Shop in Frankfort for 14 years. He served in the Army from 1969 until 1971. He enjoyed woodworking and was a NASCAR and drag racing fan. Surviving with his wife are a daughter, Vickie Fruits (husband: Curt) of Darlington; two sisters, Nancy Porter (husband: Wallace) of Attica and Jeanie Holis of Lafayette; and a brother, Mitchell Bray (wife: Ginny) of Crawfordsville. Other survivors include two grandchildren, Chad and Mike Riley; 2 great-grandchildren, Blain and Aliyah Riley; and 3 step-grandchildren, Angi Hayden, Merrill and Reece Fruits. Born in Boone County, he was the son of Harvey Wilson and Sara E. Haven Williams. He was married to Mary K. Seabolt, in Lebanon. She survives. Mr. Williams was retired from the heating and cooling business. During WWII, he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Intrepid. He as a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Surviving with his wife are three daughters, Sandra Beuley and her husband Sherman, of South Bend, Linda Ritzenthaler and her husband Robert of Battle Creek, Michigan, and Dixie Williams, of Indianapolis; one sister, Helen McIntyre, Lebanon; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by seven brothers and three sisters.

Roger Anthony Claseman, age 83, of 949 North Robinson Street, Los Angeles, CA and formerly of Lafayette, died in his residence suddenly and unexpectedly at 3:50 p.m. Monday July 12, 2004 of an apparent heart attack. Born in Clinton, Iowa November 25, 1920, he had resided in Los Angeles the past 14 years, moving there from Lafayette. He was first married to Wilma I. Brown July 31, 1941 in Texas, and she preceded him in death in March 1982. He later married Shirley Pollard LoPrest July 14, 1990 in Los Angeles, and she survives. Mr. Claseman was a graduate of Clinton High School, Clinton, Iowa, and received his B.S. and M.S. from Purdue University, where he attended on an athletic scholarship, playing baseball and wrestling. He was a Big Ten Wrestling Champ for 3 years. He taught science at Tecumseh Middle School and was the head wrestling coach there for many years. He also served as an assistant wrestling and football coach at Lafayette Jefferson High School. Mr. Claseman retired May 31, 1985 after 38 years with the Lafayette School Corporation. He was a member of St. Mary Cathedral, served in the Army during World War II, was an avid tennis player, still playing up until two weeks ago, and while in Lafayette, played trumpet for the Larry Roark Band. Surviving beside his wife is a daughter, Kathy Nesbitt of Carmel, IN, a sister, Nadine Krogman of Clinton, Iowa, and a brother, Irv Claseman of Port Huron, MI. Also surviving is a granddaughter, Amanda Nesbitt, Portland, Oregon. Those desiring may contribute in memoriam to the Roger A. Claseman Scholarship Fund being established at Tecumseh Middle School.
Irene Lucille Schlegelmilch Bird

Irene Lucille Schlegelmilch Bird, 92, Logansport, died at 9:15 p.m. Saturday, July 10, 2004, in Woodbridge Health Campus, Logansport. The 10th of eleven children (7 girls and 4 boys) she was born April 10, 1912, to Frank and Mamie Weiand Schlegelmilch on what was known as the Midway Farm, located halfway between Idaville and Burnettsville. When she was 4 yrs. old, her family moved on a farm located 4 1/2 miles northwest of Royal Center. She attended the Phelps one room school through the 8th grade. Her high school education was at Royal Center, during which time she boarded in town due to lack of transportation to and from school. The last year of high school, buses were running and when her father was busy on the farm, she drove the school bus. In April 1930, she graduated from Royal Center High School. On Sept. 29, 1934, she was married to Nathan William Bird. He operated the Shell Service Station and drove a school bus during the Depression. They lived in an upstairs apartment with Nathan's mother living downstairs. After being married several years, they purchased a National Trailer and traveled from the coast of Florida to the coast of California. On August 10, 1942, they were blessed with a beautiful baby girl, born in a Winamac hospital, weighing in at 10 lbs. 14 oz. Her name was Carolyn Ruth. When Carolyn was 2 yrs. old, they bought the Schlegelmilch farm located 2 1/2 miles west of Royal Center on the old Burr Oak Pike, now known as State Road 16. On a cold, wintery February morning, in 1950, Nathan passed away from a gangrenous appendix. The following year, the 10-room farm home was turned into what was known as the Bird's Home, a nursing home of the aged. She was the youngest nursing home operator in the state of Indiana at that time. After 10 years of service and the death of her mother and mother-in-law, she closed the home and went to work at the Logansport State Hospital. In February 1983, she retired after 20 years of service. Irene was a member of the Logansport Yorktown Church of Christ, where she was an active member of the Golden Agers program. She was a member of the Royal Center Chapter #375 Order of Eastern Star and was a former member of the board of the Senior Citizens Council on Aging. She enjoyed being part of the Senior Citizens Euchre Club. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Larry Stover, Logansport; three grandchildren, Kelly L. McCarthy & her husband Kent, Terry Dodrill and her husband Scott, and Larrly L. Stover II; and two great-grandchildren, Kerry Bird and Kyle Lee Dodrill. She was preceded in death by fdur brothers and six sisters. Memorial contributions may be made to the Yorktown Road Church of Christ.

Vincent Edward Maybee, 43, of 511 New York Street, died at 11:51 p.m. Tuesday June 8, 2004 at his home. Born July 27, 1960, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, he had lived in the Lafayette area for several years. Mr. Maybee worked as a cook for the Salvation Army and the Mental Health Association Day Shelter. He was an Army veteran. Surviving are his mother, Lyla E. Maybee of Sault St. Marie, Ontario, Canada, and a sister, Cheryl Holt (husband: John) of Melbourne Beach, Florida. Officiating at the Friday service will be the Rev. Dr. R. Clayton Kendall.
