Ina Pearl "Toby" Brown

Died: 6/10/2004
Services will be held at: 1 p.m Saturday, June 12, 2004, in Fisher Funeral Chapel with Rev. Doug Mankell officiating. Burial will be in Shiloh Cemetery.
Visitation times are: 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 11, 2004, in Fisher Funeral Chapel, Logansport, where an Eastern Star service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m.
Ina Pearl "Toby" Brown, 79, Logansport, died at 3:40 a.m. Thursday, June 10, 2004, in Logansport Memorial Hospital. Born October 7, 1924, in Logansport, she was the daughter of Lou Williams and Connie S. Burtis Jackson. Toby worked in Civil Service for the U.S. Government at Grissom AFB and also at Area V. A member of the River of Life Christian Church, she was a member of the Fidelity Chapter No. 58 Order of Eastern Star. In 1964, she started the first T.O.P.S. Club in Logansport. Surviving are two sons, James L. Brown and his wife Martha, Logansport, Tom B. Brown and his wife Carole, Greenwood; one daughter, Julienne A. DiSanto, Florence, New Jersey; two sisters, Ellen Pugh, Avon Park, Florida, and Mildred A. Ingle, Peru; one sister-in-law, Toyomi Jackson, Waukegan, Illinois; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers.
Ricky Ray Steele

Services will be held at: 10 a.m. Saturday, June 12, 2004, in Fisher Funeral Chapel with celebrant Carla Barker officiating. Burial, with military rites, will be in Ever-Rest Memorial Park.
Visitation times are: 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 11, 2004, in Fisher Funeral Chapel.
Ricky Ray Steele, 50, Logansport, died at 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 7, 2004 in his residence. Born in Logansport on October 25, 1953, he was the son of the late Ralph T. and Norma Jean Poor Steele. He was a veteran of the United States Army, earning the rank of Sergeant. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War Post 3790 and the American Legion Post 60. Ricky was also an avid BINGO player. Surviving are two sons, Ricky R. Steele Jr. and his wife Tabbatha, Logansport, and Jason Lee Steele, of Portland; one daughter, Rebekah Steele, Portland; one brother, Daniel Thomas Steele and his wife Alexandra of Indian Trails, North Carolina; three sisters, Connie Steele, Sandra Benn, and Carol Wood and her husband Kenneth, all of Logansport; seven grandchildren, Dakota Steele, Zachary Steele, Jonathan Milton, Mathew Lee Milton, Alexis Renee' Milton, Clayton Cates, and Elizabeth Walker; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Tyler Austin Milton. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross.
Howard R. Grantham

Howard R. Grantham, 87, Logansport, died at 12:44 p.m. Monday, June 7, 2004. Born Sept. 24, 1916, in Logansport, he was the son of Roy A. and Hazel E. Siddall Grantham. From 1953 until his retirement in 1979, Mr. Grantham had worked in punch press set-up at Switches, now Federal Mogul. Mr. Grantham was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a 50-year member of the Logansport Eagles. Surviving are three brothers, Roy M. Grantham, Logansport, Donald J. Grantham, Winchester, and Ira L. Grantham, Albany; and one sister, Vera H. Holt, Wisconsin. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army and the American Red Cross.
Shawn Paul Sherman

Shawn Paul Sherman, 33, Logansport, died Tuesday, June 8, 2004, in his residence. Born November 25, 1970, in Logansport, he was the son of Paul E. and Shirley Ann Warran Sherman, who survive. He was a member of the Macy Christian Church. Surviving with his parents are two brothers, Stephen Sherman and his wife Lowella, Macy, and Earl R. Sherman II and his wife Lorinell, Logansport; one sister, Mary Margaret Sherman, Logansport; two nephews, Justin Sherman and Nicholas Sherman; and four nieces, Megan Sherman, Anne Hirschler, Amanda Sherman, and Jessica Sherman. One sister, Christina M. Sherman, preceded in death. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shawn Sherman Memorial Fund c/o Paul Sherman.
Harold W. Walkup

Harold W. "Hal" Walkup, age 85, of 2408 East, 430 South, Lafayette, died at St. Mary's Healthcare Center 12:50 am, Sunday June 6, 2004. He had been a patient for the past month. Born in Indiana Harbor, Indiana, November 4, 1918, he has resided in Lafayette since 1945. He married Harriet E. Hoyt October 21, 1945 in Lafayette and she survives. Mr. Walkup was a 1936 graduate of A.J. Kent High School in Kentland, IN. He received his B.S. in mechanical engineering from Purdue University in 1949. He retired from Fairfield Manufacturing in 1982 as production control manager. A member of Congress Street United Methodist Church, he had taught a Sunday school class of young adults for 35 years, was former chairman of the board of trustees, a lay leader, and former lay delegate to the annual conference. He served as a former board member of the Tippecanoe County Mental Health Association, and was a member and Past Master of Masonic Ledge #492 in Lafayette. Mr. Walkup served in the Army Air Corps during WWII as a B-17 navigator, and held the rank of captain. He was lead navigator of the 381st Bomb Group, 535 Squadron. He received the distinguished flying cross and the air medal with 3 oak leaf clusters. He was a member of the 8th Air Force Historical Society, 381 Bomb Group. Surviving beside the wife is a son, Charles H. Walkup (wife: Patricia) of Emmaus, PA, and 2 daughters, Patricia J. Walkup of Arlington, VA and Deborah L. Toole (husband: James) of Kendallville, IN. He is also survived by 3 grandchildren. Mr. Walker was preceded in death by his parents, Edmund and Murtie (Richardson) Walkup. Those desiring may contribute in memoriam to the Alzheimers Association or Congress Street United Methodist Church.
William H. McEllhiney

Services will be held at: at 1 p.m. at the FISHER-LOY FUNERAL CHAPEL, 914 Columbia St., the Rev. Leeroy Hill officiating. Private family interment, Fairview Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Princeton.
Visitation times are: Friends may call from 11 a.m. Monday until the time of services.
William H. McEllhiney, 84, of Lafayette, died at 2:55 p.m. Friday, June 4, 2004, in St. Elizabeth Medical Center. Born Aug. 3, 1919, in Gary, he was raised in Gary and graduated from Carter-Harrison Technical High School in 1936. He received his bachelor's degree in 1953 from Indiana State University, and later received his master's in high school administration there. Mr. McEllhiney was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the field artillery. He worked for Lockheed Aircraft in California as a civilian and later in civil service. He worked at the Pensacola (Fla.) Air Station before retiring in 1991. He was a member of Lafayette Pentecostal Church of God and a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1154 in Lafayette. On Nov. 23, 1990, he married Ellen Shoaf in Lafayette. She survives. Also surviving are three stepdaughters, Jamie Smith (husband: Kent) of Churubusco, Ramona Booth of Fairmont, W.Va.; Berdina Brunton (husband: Randy) of Otterbein; a stepson, Chris Clawson (wife: Monica) of Otterbein; a daughter, Suzanne Rinc and a son, David H. McEllhiney, both of Florida; twelve grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

James Albert Bennett, age 80, of 333 South 28th Street, Lafayette, died in Home Hospital at 7:50 p.m., Tuesday, June 1, 2004. He had been a patient for the past 10 days. Born in Lafayette September 20, 1923, he was a life long resident. Mr. Bennett married Marilyn Mace July 18, 1969 in Las Vegas, Nevada, she survives. A graduate of Lafayette Jefferson High School, Mr. Bennett was a World War II Army Veteran, and had worked for the New York Central Railroad, later Conrail, as a block operator. Mr. Bennett was a member of the Old Rails. His wife is the only immediate survivor. Preceded in death by a brother, Theron T. Bennett. Those desiring may contribute in memoriam to the American Cancer Society.
Wanda C. Mansfield

Services will be held at: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 2, 2004, in Fisher-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home with Dr. Elliott officiating. Burial will be in Hughes Cemetery, Monticello.
Visitation times are: 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 1, 2004, in Fisher-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home, Monticello, where an Eastern Star memorial service is planned that evening.
Wanda C. Mansfield, 78, Monticello, died at 6:03 p.m. Friday, May 28, 2004, in White County Memorial Hospital. Born April 16, 1926, in Monticello, she was the daughter of Walter and Ima Hughes Criswell. She was married to Delbert Mansfield, who survives. She was a member of the Sitka Baptist Church and the Battleground Chapter of Order of Eastern Star. An avid bowler, she enjoyed gardening and hunting. She worked as a waitress for the Captain's Corner and Ray & Letha's. Surviving with her husband are one daughter, Cindy Businger and her husband, Lonnie, of Monticello; one son, Gary D. Cook, Rochester; one daughter-in-law, Linda L. Cook, Monticello; two stepsons, Delbert "Buster" Mansfield and his wife, Charlene, of Denver, Colorado, and David "Dave" Mansfield and his wife Beth, of Plainfield, Indiana; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Wayne Cook; one grandson, Doug Mansfield; one stepson, Alan Mansfield; and two brothers, William and Erwin Criswell. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.
Lewis E. Wien

Lewis E. Wien Lewis E. "Lewie" Wien, 85, of 2501 Edglea Drive, died at 9:35 a.m. Thursday, May 20, 2004, in Home Hospital, where he had been a patient for a week. He had been ill for a month. Born Oct. 4, 1918, in Lafayette, he lived in Lafayette most of his life. He also had briefly lived in Warren County. He married Betty M. Rater in West Lafayette on April 6, 1949. She survives. Mr. Wien was a retired farmer. He later retired as caretaker of the Tippecanoe County Fairgrounds. He was a past master and 50-year member of Romney Masonic Lodge 441, Scottish Rite, Valley of Indianapolis and Merou Grotto. He was a past 4-H member and junior leader, and had volunteered with the Tippecanoe County 4-H Fair for many years. He enjoyed Purdue football and basketball, fishing and flea markets. Surviving with his wife is a daughter, Deborah J. Harper (husband: William A.) of Lafayette. Graveside services with Masonic rites will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, in Montmorenci Cemetery, the Rev. Scott Davis officiating. Survivors include a granddaughter, Greta Harper; and 3 grandsons, Chris, Michael and Storm Harper. Preceded in death by 2 sisters, Mary Kiebler and Iris Short; and 2 brothers, John and Richard Wien. Those desiring may contribute in memoriam to the Tippecanoe County 4-H Scholarship Fund. Arrangements entrusted to Fisher-Loy Funeral Chapel.
