Thelma L. Buchanan Martin, 84
Thelma L. Buchanan Martin, 84, Columbus, died Monday in Hickory Creek Nursing Home.
Born in Decatur County Aug. 10, 1921, Mrs. Martin was the daughter of the late Charles E. and Bessie Bullard Buchanan.
She married Culver Martin Sept. 26, 1944.
He died Oct. 26, 2002.
Mrs. Martin enjoyed her grandchildren, gardening and doing needlepoint and embroidery.
She attended Flintwood Wesleyan Church.
Survivors include a son, Thomas E. (Ivy) Martin of Columbus; a daughter, Barbara Jane (Randy) Strahl of Columbus; grandchildren, Jeffrey and Jason Strahl and Barbara Ann Martin; and a sister, Mary Veerkamp of Michigan.
She was predeceased by brothers, Leonard, James and Lawrence Pete Buchanan, and a sister who died at birth.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today and from 1:30 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. services Thursday in Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home with the Rev. Harold Carr officiating.
Burial will be in Milford Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of South Central Indiana.
Mary C. Phillips, 73
Mary C. Phillips, 73, Greensburg, died Tuesday, January 31, 2006 at the Decatur County Hospital in Greensburg.
Born, July 28, 1932 in Decatur Co., Indiana, she was the daughter of Gail and Lucille (Harding) Foley.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of the New Point Christian Church.
She was married to Herbert R. Phillips, and he preceded her in death in 1989.
She is survived by one son, Tom (Kathy) Phillips, Greensburg; 1 brother, Franklin "Snap" Foley, Bloomfield, In.; 4 grandchildren, Cassie Streeval, Greensburg, Codey Streeval, Greensburg, Deanna Richardson, Greensburg, Alexis Robertson, Shelbyville; 3 great grandchildren, Taleisa Byrd, Greensburg, Jaslyn Byrd, Greensburg, Olivia Embree, Greensburg.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; 1 daughter, Leisa Streeval; 6 brothers, Gail Foley, Jr., Rolland Foley, Paul Foley, Charles Foley, Larry Foley, Gary Foley; 2 sisters, Vetha Clark, Florence Ann Davis.
Visitation will be from 4-8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Porter-Oliger-Pearson Funeral Home in Greensburg.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 2, 2006 at the Porter-Oliger-Pearson Funeral Home in Greensburg with Rev. William Thompson III officiating.
Internment will be held in the Rossburg Cemetery in New Point.
Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Foundation.
David H. Hurst, 77
David H. Hurst, 77, of Greensburg, Ind., formerly of Columbus passed away January 29, 2006.
Mr. Hurst was the former owner of DH Hurst Hearing Aid Company in Columbus, Ind.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ida Faye (Warmoth) Hurst.
He is survived by his daughter, Ardis (Tom) Hendrix, and grandsons Kyle and Sean Hendrix.
Funeral Services will be Feb. 1. 2006 at 1:00 p.m. at the Little & Sons Funeral Home, Beech Grove Chapel, Beech Grove, Ind., where visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Indiana Deaf School
Carolyn A. Flaningam, 61
Carolyn A. Flaningam, 61, a retired Fairfax County teacher, died January 27 of complications from pancreatic cancer surgery at the Medical College of Virginia.
She was born and raised in Greensburg, IN and attended Purdue University, where she received a B.A. and an M.S. in Education.
After teaching in Indiana for several years, she moved with her husband to Northern Virginia in 1974 where she accepted a position with the Fairfax County Public Schools.
She remained with Fairfax Schools until her retirement in 2004, after which she moved to Williamsburg, VA.
A gifted and dedicated teacher, she taught at several schools, including Holmes Intermediate and Annandale, West Springfield, Herndon, Lake Braddock , and Robinson High Schools, where she was chairman of the Social Studies department.
She taught Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate programs and served as a mentor for new Social Studies teachers.
Mrs. Flaningam demanded high standards from her students but won their affection as well.
Many of her students joked about tape recording her laugh and taking it with them to college.
Everyone who knew her was dazzled by her laugh, as well as her zest and enthusiasm for life, compassion and concern for others.
Aside from her career, her main interests were her family, friends, travel and decorating her house.
She is proceded in death by her parents Robert and Ruth Martin and her brother Larry Martin.
She is survived by her husband, John Flaningam; daughter, Jennifer Flaningam; and numerous other relatives and countless friends.
A memorial service will be held at the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church in Williamsburg, VA on Saturday, February 4 at 1:00 p.m. and at the Old Chapel at Ft. Myer on Monday, February 27 at 3:00 p.m. followed by Interment at Arlington National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the American Cancer Society.

Everett L. “Jim” Swinford, 80
Everett L. “Jim” Swinford, 80, died Wednesday in The Waters of Batesville.
Born March 16, 1925 in Anderson, he was the son of the late Everett P. and Jennie (Atterbury) Swinford.
Mr. Swinford was employed as a jeweler and was a member of the F & AM in Connersville, Greensburg United Methodist Church and was a Navy Veteran, having served during World War II.
On Oct.18, 1946 he was married to Cloie Sebastian Swinford.
She preceded him in death on April 15, 1994.
He then remarried to Mary Margaret Ernstes on Sept. 22, 1995 in Chesapeake, VA.
She survives, with a daughter, Carol Cirillo of Virginia Beach; sisters Pauline (Jack) Guinn and Faye McCord, both of Anderson; brothers, Harry Swinford of Pendleton and Ora E. Swinfor of Daleville; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was also predeceased by a son, James E. Swinford; son-in-law, Donald Cirillo; sister, Reba Swinford and brother, Dallas Swinford.
Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Charles Wilfong officiating.
Burial will take place in Southpark Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the American Heart Association.
