Sara K. Layton
Sara K. Layton, 77, Greensburg, died Monday, June 23, at Windsor Manor Nursing Home, Indianapolis.
She married Joe Layton Dec. 10, 1947 and he survives.
A waitress for several years at Seitz's Restaurant in Greensburg, she was a member of First Baptist Church and a former Girl Scouts leader.
Besides her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Jacqua Lynn Osting of New Palestine; two brothers, James Buell of Whiteland and Donald Buell of Greensburg; two sisters, Maxine Brown and Martha Davis, both of Greensburg; and two granddaughters.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Joe Buell, and a sister, Betty Small.
Private funeral service for the family will be held at Porter-Oliger-Pearson Funeral Home, Greensburg, with the Rev. David Thompson officiating.
Burial will be in South Park Cemetery.
No public visitation will be held.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church building fund.
Alberta Mae Gardner
Alberta Mae Gardner, 69, Greensburg, died at 12:19 p.m. Monday, June 23, 2003 at her home.
born Oct. 10, 1933 in Seymour, she was the daughter of Jason W. and Dorothy (Donnell) Ashby, both deceased.
A telephone operator for many years, she was a member of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by two sons, Jeff (Julie) Gardner of Greensburg and David Gardner of Indianapolis; and a daughter, Jill (Chris) Schroeder of Greensburg.
Funeral service is at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home, Greensburg, with the Rev. Paul Kirk officiating.
Burial will follow in South Park Cemetery.
Visitation is from 9 a.m. until service Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.
Theresa Rose Griffith, 52
Theresa Rose Griffith, 52, North Vernon, died at 5:45 a.m. on Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at Columbus Regional Hospital.
born in Jennings County on Aug. 19, 1949, she was the daughter of Robert and Opal Leahigh Gross, and her mother survives.
A Masco technician, she was formerly an employee of Componex, True Temper, Plasfinco and Metal Dye.
She was a member of the VFW and Amvets Ladies Auxiliary.
She is survived by her mother, Opal Leahigh Gross of North Vernon; three daughters, Laura and Bobbie Griffith and Melissa Wells, all of North Vernon; three sons, Christopher, Robert and Darren Griffith, all of North Vernon; two sisters, Virginia Bradley of Westport and Sandra Nantz of Butlerville; a brother, Donald Leahigh of Bloomington; and six grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Gross.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 1, 2002, at Pickett Funeral Home.
Burial will take place at Butlerville Cemetery in Butlerville.
Visitation will be at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday.
Donald R. Barker, 84
Donald R. Barker, 84, Grammer, died at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at his residence.
born Sept. 10, 1917 in Azalia, he was the son of Clarence M. and Mary M. (Taylor) Barker, both deceased.
He married Isabelle Burns on Jan. 20, 1940 at Tyson Temple in Versailles, and she survives.
In 1991, he retired from Arvin Industries in North Vernon, where he had worked for almost 44 years.
He had served as president of the United Auto Workers AFL-CIO union.
He was a member of the Grammer Presbyterian Church for 57 years and served as a deacon, elder, Sunday school teacher and Sunday school superintendent.
He was a 1935 graduate of Columbus High School.
He was a member of the Elizabethtown Masonic Lodge 249 for 57 years, and a 30-year member of the Indianapolis Valley of Scottish Rite.
He was a past patron of the Order of the Eastern Star in North Vernon, and a member of the Redman Lodge.
He was a former member of the board of directors of the Boy Scouts of Rockcreek Township, and had served as Republican Party sheriff at the voting polls for several years.
He was also an avid fisherman and farmer for many years.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Garry Barker of Columbus and Duane Barker of Elizabethtown; two daughters, Beverly Tempest of Elizabethtown and Marcia Schwering of Rushville; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Clarence E. Barker.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Myers Funeral Service, Reed & Jewell Chapel in Columbus with Revs. Mitchell J. Coggin and Brian Tetty officiating.
Burial will follow at the Garland Brook Cemetery in Columbus.
Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Friday and from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
A masonic memorial service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Hospice of South Central Indiana, Grammer Presbyterian Church or the American Cancer Society.
Bernice S. Barth, 86
Bernice S. Barth, 86, Greensburg, died at 3:50 a.m. Thursday, May 30, 2002 at Odd Fellows Nursing Home.
born March 14, 1916 in Corydon, she was the daughter of Jesse S. and Martina S. (Shuck) Smith, both deceased.
She married Howard J. Barth Feb. 10, 1940 in Corydon and he preceded her in death on April 19, 1980.
She attended Hanover College.
A school teacher who had taught at Holton, Jac-Cen-Del and Greensburg, she retired in 1975.
She was the last remaining one-room school teachers in the area.
She was a member of Greensburg United Methodist Church, and the order of the Eastern Star.
She was also a member of the Psi Iot Xi sorority and the Decatur County Association of Retired Teachers.
She is survived by one son, Stephen Barth of Greensburg; one daughter, Ann Oak of West Bend, Wis.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, Jay Smith.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 1 at Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home, with Rev. Mike Biggs officiating.
Burial will follow at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in Olean.
Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Greensburg United Methodist Church or Hospice of Decatur County.
